Becoming a Pro Singer in Los Angeles

By Ben M. – Glendale Singing Teacher

You know the saying, "Hollywood is where stars are born!" It's both true and misleading. I've found a better way to put it: "Hollywood is where people realize they're already stars!" And no, I'm not talking about fame. There is a common misconception that in order to "make it" in LA, you have to become famous. You may hold this misconception yourself because most - if not all - of the entertainment professionals you know are celebrities. You rarely hear about the thousands of regular people who came here to be in the industry - and succeeded. There are studio singers, tour singers, wedding singers, music therapists, singing teachers...the list goes on and on. Taking singing lessons in Glendale, California and exploring the LA music scene are great ways to get started in your dreams to succeed in your career as a singer.

Los Angeles is the rare city that has no real central hub. Rather, it consists of a number of communities all in close proximity to each other; and Glendale is just one of these communities. Singers just getting their career started will find many like-minded individuals in the many nearby communities of Silver Lake, Echo Park, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Burbank, and Studio City. I've found that the easiest and most effective way of finding other open-minded singers is to visit one of the many popular "open mic" nights and artist showcases in these communities. To supplement your singing lessons in Glendale, hit up any of these well-known spots to connect with fellow singers eager to share and collaborate:

Room 5 - Hollywood This should be everybody's first stop on the LA music circuit; it's a glimpse into the heart of Hollywood's hardest working musicians. If you're from out of town, you will be amazed at the caliber of talent that graces the stage at Room 5 every night. It's a testament to the vast amount of talent that exists here. Say hi to your favorite singer after the show, and ask them about what they do. They will undoubtedly have valuable knowledge to share with you. http://www.room5lounge.com/

The Hotel Cafe - Hollywood You may have heard a live album from one of your favorite artists that was recorded here. This venue does a great job of making room for all levels, whether you're just starting out or are a national act. If your material is good, they will make room for you. https://www.hotelcafe.com/

The Troubadour - West Hollywood A unique venue with a whole lot of history. They don't have an open mic here, instead focusing on touring artists with draws of 100 or more. It's a great place to get a taste of what Los Angeles is all about. http://www.troubadour.com/

Silver Lake Lounge - Silver Lake A tiny venue that focuses on local independent artists, especially in the rock genre. This place has a certain flair to it and is a great spot if you're looking to meet some of the more eccentric members of the LA music scene. http://thesilverlakelounge.ticketfly.com/

Tribal Cafe - Echo Park An all-ages cafe with a very relaxed atmosphere. They insist on creating and maintaining a friendly and casual environment for both musicians and spectators. Once you get to know other musicians at a similar point on their journey, you can start attending the countless auditions that are held here every week - both by companies and individuals. You can also ask to be introduced to other pros who might be looking to work with someone like you. http://www.tribalcafe.com/site/

As you grow with your peers in this city, it's important to continue improving your skills. Taking singing lessons in Glendale from a local teacher is a great way to hone your talent and learn about your instrument.

Michelle G.

North Hollywood, CA

Lessons are tailored to each student and depending on the goals of the student, and may include rehabilitating vocal issues, learning a solid technique, reducing & eliminating vocal breaks, strengthening the instrument, developing power, balance, tone, greater range, and discovering the joy and freedom in their voice.

About Michelle

VOCAL COACH
Rehabilitating and strengthening voices are two of my top specialties, and each lesson will have specific exercises tailored to helping you transform your voice into the highest and best version of your instrument. I work with singers signed to labels as well as the indie artist just starting to find his/her voice, style, and signature sound. My coaching approach incorporates some of the newest technologies that have shown extraordinary results in breaking down the inner blocks of each artist. It is a tremendously joyful and fulfilling experience to watch as my students really let
their instrument shine brightly, boldly, and with an aboslutely stunning groundedness as they discover how powerful they truly are.

MUSICIAN/SONGWRITER/PERFORMER

Poised, energized, and armed with unforgettable performance ability, Michelle G. is a firework in the artistic arena. Her training began at the young age of 3 with the violin, and a few years later received classes for piano and voice. Excelling in all three, Michelle developed a very passionate and dramatic personality that eventually led her to more dramatic genres such as opera and stage acting. Her aptitude to understand human emotions and relationships gives her a wide spectrum to play in as an actress. There is an organic flow to her interpretations both as an actress and musician that leads the audience to feel her emotional current. Her honest characterizations introduce deeper perspectives on what seems like the ordinary roles and storylines. Amongst the many other leads that she has played, her participation in roles like “Susanna” in The Marriage of Figaro, or “Donna Elvira” in Don Giovanni embody much vibrancy and integrity.
Through the development of her voice as a singer and actress, she has crossed over into other media such as voice over commercial work and vocals for pop/main stream music productions. She has recently participated as a vocalist and violinist in the albums of artists such as international jazz pop artist David Longoria, Latin pop singer Erick Bolivar, Grammy-nominated percussionist Souhail Kaspar, and American Idol’s Seysha. Over the last few years she has unraveled her musical skills as a songwriter/composer/arranger and has even had some small victories acquiring music placements on TV shows (NCIS, short film “Sumtin’ Like Dat”, The Dictator) for herself and some of her colleagues. Her singing can also be heard on the hit tv show "Jane The Virgin", "Castle" and "Shameless" amongst others.

Education
Michelle completed her Associates of Arts for Music/Music Education at the age of 18, and got later graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Miami with a Bachelor's of Arts for Musical Theater and Music Business, as well as from Florida International University with a Master's of Music in Vocal Performance.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor my lessons to my student's needs, style, abilities, and goals. Learning is truly a fun and passionate adventure for me, and my enthusiasm has consistently been a contagious quality :) I love to challenge myself & my students to discover how immense their true potential is, and I create a safe and fun environment to explore such facets.

My curriculum is combination of solid tradition (Suzuki method for piano & violin, and Bel Canto technique for singing) interwoven with pop-culture, and modern influences. Within the first 3-6 months, my students will know the basic building blocks of music - which includes scales, arpeggios, triads, intervals, technique, and performance repertoire; and for my singers this will include proper breath technique, tone placement, support, very often increased vocal range (both high and low), and will feel significantly stronger vocally and more confident getting up to sing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Full size Keyboard, mics, pro tools, Violin (electric, acoustic, and Chinese Ehru)

*** Specialties ***
Specialties include:
- Audition technique and prep

Teaching Vocals for over 10 years in both public schools and in private coachings, this is my favorite to teach. Not only do I trained the students to become singers but musicians as well. To work with bands or other cast members of a show, To prep for an audition and maintain a stage presence. They will gain confidence in not only in Singing but in themselves as well.

For student's interested in coming to my Teacher's studio or online lessons you get a copy of your lesson so you can see yourself improving and a free copy of my warm-up CD! CHECK OUT MY PROFILE FOR VIDEOS ON SINGING TIPS!

About Rosita

I have been singing and studying voice for over 23 years since I was a child! I hold a Bachelors from Musicians Institute and other accomplished degrees from American Musical Dramatic Academy to conclude my quest for vocal excellence and the ability to sing in multiple languages ( English, Spanish, Japanese and Italian) I have been lucky enough to study with some of the top teachers in the country and now I bring the experience I have gained directly to you!
I am proud to share my student's vast array of musical successes. From being cast on short anime films and musicals to being accepted in
to prestigious performing arts academies to conquering the Karaoke scene. My passion for multiple languages and love of music is the desire driving me to share the gifts for teaching young children to open the door to their own musical abilities and hidden artistic desires. I am currently writing a musical which will be debuting in 2020. I'm currently the vocal coach and choir director at Iglesia Elim Central.

I will make sure my students have fun and help them get in the right track to their musical goals.

Also, I constantly upload videos on Singing, The Spanish Language, and Japanese! So keep Checking in! It ranges on tips and answering the most common questions on those particular subjects!

*** Lesson Details ***
I do my absolute best to create a positive atmosphere for my students. Even when the students feel frustrated or stressed, it is important to inspire them and give them the fuel that they need. Though I am strict when it comes to homework and their about their studies. Every lesson at the beginning I will review what we learned previously and test them.
then begin with proper breathing technique exercises, the cornerstone of all vocals. We move on to vocal exercises to condition the voice. Then we work on the songs that you are eager to sing!

I will use a piano when doing vocal warm ups and conditioning exercises. Students that play other instruments and accompany themselves when performing (such as a guitar) are encouraged to bring that instrument to their lessons. My goal is for them to gain the knowledge that they need to help reach their artistic goals.
With all my lessons every student will be taught a basic run down of Music Theory. My students will always progress in what they do. They will have the discipline that they need and yet have fun and be filled with inspiration. Which is the most important thing, to be Inspired to do better.

*** Studio Equipment ***
iMac, condensing mic...performing mic, keyboard, mixer...living room of apartment.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I do have a portable keyboard. Though I do expect the student to have their own recording device and karaoke tracks. At Home I do have a studio, and if the students has an iPod or an Mp3 player I can attach it to a device where all of us can hear the tracks. I do have a recording studio as well.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Musical Theatre, and Pop rock genres. When I teach my students I always have them learn a song of another language whether it's Spanish or Japanese. It helps with diction when they learn a song outside the English Language. Also It helps them to learn another Language at the same time. Also I give them a little anatomy class when they are learning how to sing. I give them a model of the vocal Chords and different areas of the Larynx and which part works for the chest voice and the head voice.

Rosita is an excellent teacher. She is very detailed in terms of transitioning between notes, breathing properly, and opening the mouth wide enough to sing. She is also very encouraging. On our first lesson, she told me that I had a natural talent for singing, but my voice has improved dramatically since then. I would definitely recommend her to anyone who wants to learn to sing, or can already sing, but wants to sing better.

I believe it is important to have fun when learning a new instrument. Because, why do it if you don't enjoy it?
Therefore, I tailor all lessons per student to make sure you get the most out of your lessons. We can work on anything from learning new songs, to different techniques and theory or even performance.

About Moa

Seeing individuals improve their skill set and confidence through music is why teaching is one of my passions!

My name is Moa and I am a singer, guitarist and bassist. I am a Swedish native who decided to pursue my music career and moved to LA 4 years ago.

Since relocating to Hollywood, I have earned an AA degree in voice and independent artistry from Musicians Institute and travelled the world playing cruise ships, US air force bases, high schools and clubs all over the US, and especially SoCal with several bands. My main focus and "baby" is my band, Dead Heroine, where I am the lead
singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist. We earned a slot at Warped Tour '15 and are currently writing new material for our sophomore EP while playing actively at high schools and clubs in the LA/OC area.

With over 7 years of professional teaching experience I am looking forward to work with you and help you in any way I can on your musical journey, wether it's improving your range, technique, confidence or you-name-it!

Ashot B.

Glendale, CA

Beginners: Warm-Up Exercises, Pitch Control, Simple Song Choice
Intermediate level: Warm-Up, Breathing Exercises, Right Song Choice
Advanced Level: Warm-Up, Repertoire Choice, Audition Preparation,
Studio Recording Preparation

About Ashot

Ashot B. is a professional musician, composer, arranger, producer, vocal-band leader, and voice/piano teacher. A graduate of Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory ( with a Master’s Degree in music Performance and Education), he, along with a classical music, has been a lover of Pop and Jazz music from an early age. Among his influences are Frederic Chopin, George Gershwin, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Quincy Jones.

The academic education on one side, and a personal research and self-education on another, brought him to the determination to find his own way for se
lf-expression. In 1987 he was invited by the National Centre of Children’s Art, Music and Aesthetics to work as a music director and arranger for its Musical Theatre. Soon, he was offered to lead a small group of singers, mostly teenage girls, which later evolved into his original Jazz-Pop- Choir. In 1990, the choir was featured on National Television, performing the famed The Beatles hit “Let it be,” and becoming an instant sensation. The work with this choir within the next 3-4 years brought many awards and fame to Mr. B. as well as to the young singers, many of whom went on to become nationally acclaimed Pop stars.

The years following the Jazz-Pop-Choir saw Ashot B. take on a new direction: individually working with aspiring young pop singers pursuing their dreams of a big stage. As a part-time professor in the Yerevan State Komitas Conservatory Jazz Department, the Yerevan State Pop & Jazz College, as well as privately, in his own Home-Studio, Ashot B. made it his top commitment to find, through individual approach, each young singers personal strengths, and, through the development of a musical taste and the choice of the right songs, help each of them reach the pinnacles of their potential. The results were participating and winning numerous prestigious international competitions, such as “Sloviansky Bazaar” (Slovenian Bazaar), “Shire Krug” (“Wider Circle”), “Golos Azii” (“Voice of Asia”), as well as, more recently, “Eurovision Song Contest,” and “American Idol.” Needless to say, many of these solo proteges joined the list of stars in the Armenian Pop Hall of Fame.

In 2006, Ashot B. moved to Los Angeles, and to this day continues to educate the young generations.

*** Piano Lesson Details ***

I strongly believe that it's extremely important to help beginners acquire a strong foundation in real musicianship. The first thing that any aspiring/beginning piano student should learn is the combination of the following:
1. Proper posture and proper hand-position
2. Proper touch that ensures a full sound and a beautiful tone
3. Basic music theory and notation
4. Appropriate and personalized choice of various songs/pieces: building of a repertoire

*** Singing Lesson Details***

I believe that anyone with a musical ear/sense of pitch can sing, no matter how powerful their voice is. My experience allows me to see a hidden talent of the prospective student, and in a short time find the best way to help them to achieve their goal.

Ashot B. is a multi-talented musician, composer and educator! I made my first steps into the music world with the help of and under the direct supervision of this wonderful man! I was one of the lead singers of his Jazz/Pop band in Armenia. I was about 9 years old when I joined that band, and, since then, my life has never been the same! He introduced us to the best music, inspired us to sing in many styles; he taught us how to sing sophisticated harmonies, introduced complicated rhythms, helped each one of us find our own style, sing with our own unique voice. Our band took numerous prizes at music festivals around the world, and many of our band members continued our musical careers as professional singers and became top-level artists in different countries! He’s a great teacher, who knows exactly what each singer needs in order to bring out the best out of his/her voice. I can’t even find enough words to express all my gratitude and appreciation to my first teacher, my musical mentor, and a wonderful person who helped me become who I am today! I definitely recommend Ashot to everyone who’s looking for a great teacher! He knows the right path!

Christina E.

Pasadena, CA

The most important aspect of vocal training that I will emphasize is breath support. Connecting to the body when singing will ensure vocal protection and prevent unwanted vocal strain. I will also focus on gaining control through scales and breathing. I would like my students to gain consistency in their lessons each week by providing them with new challenges and helping them to gain new tools when practicing. Applying these fundamental elements of healthy singing into each student's repertoire is the ultimate goal in these lessons.

About Christina

My name is Christina and I am very passionate about the vocal arts, specifically Opera. Opera was a surprise in my life that I discovered in college. It moved me to a point where I knew it was what I wanted to pursue. Though singing classically takes great patience, discipline, and perseverance, that 5 minutes on stage projecting pure vocal freedom and expression make it well worth it. The classical technique can provide a great foundation to healthy singing, which can ensure a long vocal life.
Along side opera, I believe basic knowledge in piano is extremely beneficial in improving musicali
ty and an understanding of each piece. Piano greatly improves sight reading and ones ability to learn music quickly and efficiently. It can allow one to develop an understanding of harmony and context within each unique piece of music.
I have recently started teaching and would love to help and guide those interested in music, specifically classical voice, opera, musical theater, and piano. I would love to share the great joy it brings me with others and pass down what I have learned over the years. I have completed courses in music pedagogy and education alongside my degree, and believe in shaping my lessons around each individual's learning style so that each student may continue to grow while having fun.
I graduated with high honors from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2014 with a degree in music receiving both music and academic scholarships. I have performed a wide variety of roles with the university's Opera Scenes program, private showcases, and main staged productions. I was also the featured soprano soloist with the Santa Ynez Master Chorale and Orchestra for their Spring concert.

*I will drive to you for lessons being I don't have sufficient studio space. The only requirement I have is that a piano be present for scales and learning music.

Christina rocks!!!! She helped me find my voice. I'm an older (some could say senior 😀) student. I never had any formal training. In one lesson she had me singing 100 times better. Surprisingly, I'm getting even better as the lessons progress. I started out watching Videos online which helped me, but at some point you need a professional to hear your voice.
I am the cantor at church, so I am so thankful for Christina and her focused direction. I think the congregation is thankful for her as well 😀. Love you Christina and thanks for helping me find my voice.
