Marty W.

Chandler, AZ

'Having performed in operas such as 'Cosi Fan Tutti' and sang in various choirs, I have experience in 'Opera Voice' (or also called 'Classical Voice.') Both as a vocal pedagogy teacher and vocal coach (emphasizing the story-line of the operatic piece) - my background is uniquely suited to be of assistance. Whether singing in German, Italian, English (etc) - you will gain assistance with your efforts. I use the IPA as a foundation for assisting my students in their performances.

About Marty

Open up to your own unique voice. Play piano with energy and freedom.

"With singing, your body is your instrument. Helping you become all you can be as a performer is my number one goal. Protecting your voice is a close second as we work to strengthen your vocal range and the quality of your sound. As well, piano students will learn techniques that will speed up their comprehension of sight reading and/or improvisation. Teaching gives me an opportunity to energize my students and share with them historically proven techniques - as well as new ways of practicing and performing." - Marty

Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Marty moved to the Phoenix, AZ area eight years ago. Marty has over 20 years of performing and teaching experience. She studied for three years at the School of Music, University of Colorado, Boulder. She has studied in the Masters program in vocal pedagogy and has performed in a variety of venues from blues to opera.

You will find her pedagogy technique to be respectful of the masters that have come before her. She is also open to new techniques from belting (in popular music), to microphone usage skills. As a student, you will be invited to perform in student recitals. You will be joining a team of dedicated, passionate performers who know the pleasure of performing.

As a beginning and intermediate piano instructor, Marty will guide you in the basics of sight reading. If you prefer, your piano classes will consist primarily of improvisation and chord progressions (you will also learn a little bit of sight reading which will help you 'flesh out' the melody). You will gain a solid foundation in music theory as well as an introduction into the vast world of music history. All age ranges are welcome, from the beginning elementary student, to the retiree just now finding the time to pursue their passion to perform.

I have authored a variety of music theory articles to assist you with your progress. We use these in the lessons to speed up your assimilation of the material. You will receive support via this literature and will quickly recognize how music theory supports your efforts with either singing or playing the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your voice is unique to you. How you currently sing and what you want to sing will be the foundation from which we work. We will explore your voice and strengthen it via breath and physical exercises and practice with a repertoire that suits your individual tastes. We will also prepare your mind for quick and fluid articulation of your musical sensitivities.

Music theory and various musical explorations will assist you in moving forward in the most rapid manner possible. Whether you are twelve years old or sixty-five, you will find fun as well as perceptive methods for strengthening your passion for musical performance.

Since your body is your instrument, I am very conscious of the need to assist you in waking your body up in order to perform most successfully. The warm-up exercises include not only traditional vocalizes, but also methods for stretching your body and strengthening your diaphragmatic breathing. My students become very aware of any residual tension in their bodies. Singing is a wonderful way to get in touch with - and expel - any way in which you might 'close down' or 'tense down' your physical body. By working with a caring professional, you will learn how to freely share your unique talent with the world.

As we progress through the series of classes, you will use breathing exercises to activate the thoracic (throat & chest) and visceral (stomach) cavities. Your lessons will continue into specific vocalization exercises; such as singing scales, triads and specific exercises to assist you with fluid musical expression. Traditional ear training will also be a part of the lessons for intermediate students.

Many of the lessons I teach include a theme of working on confidence, vocal projection, breath support, finding and releasing tension, vocal range expansion, audition preparation and stage performance. All singing includes a core of story-telling. You will be encouraged to 'deconstruct' a song and discover the story, along with the emotions that are found in the lyrics of the songs you will sing.

______________________

In a similar fashion, my piano students will work on exercises to establish kinesthetic learning or muscle-memory. I have a unique method for sharing chord-progressions and piano improvisation. You will learn to quickly share music in a satisfying and pleasing manner that will surprise you and the people who hear your music. From your unique 'ear,' and via your new-found understanding of music theory, music will pour out of your piano.

As a piano student, you will also be exposed to lessons of the masters who have taught for hundreds of years. Sight-reading at the piano is a very enjoyable skill. It is also a foundation from which we will work (while taking in mind your particular interests). Again, whether a pre-teen or a senior citizen (or anyone in between!) who has finally found the time to explore their musical talent - you will find classes uniquely suited to your musical trajectory.

Your lessons will proceed as you acquire the ability to successfully perform your exercises and musical literature. Playing the piano fluidly and sharing your abilities with others is an amazing experience! It is my intent to ensure that your progress is swift, enjoyable and based on the work of the masters who have come before us! See you soon... Cordially, Marty W.

At first the reason I decided to take singing lessons was just for fun but after 9+ months with Marty, man oh man... I have made lots of progress, am more confident in my singing abilities, and learned a great deal of what it takes to be a great singer. Sometimes when I'm singing, I'm completely a different person!

I still have a long way to go, but Marty has taught me that it is possible for anybody to sing well and that is why we need Marty! She is friendly, very encouraging and full of energy and fun. Thank you, Marty!

I just finished my first lesson with Marty today. I was nervous and excited before the lesson but Marty was very welcoming, warm and friendly. She is very passionate about music and singing and during the lesson I could feel she was invested in my success. In the first lesson I already felt equipped to begin learning and practicing things to help me on my journey toward my goals. She also communicated a great commitment to my goals which was a major point for me. Her knowledge of music added to my excitement because I enjoy learning and Marty was more than happy to educate me, even on more complex topics. I am glad that Marty will be part of my journey to improving my musical skills and consequently, my life.

Karen R.

Mesa, AZ

I teach Opera Voice and have extensive curriculum and teaching materials. During the first lesson, I determine the student's vocal range by having him/her sing up and down the scale. I teach vocal techniques, correct diaphragm breathing, correct singing stance, diction and vowel formation, emoting while singing, connecting to the song, memorization techniques, understanding music history, and much more. I have a B.A. in Music Education with a vocal emphasis. I have been trained in the Alexander Technique and have had 7 semesters of private classical voice lessons. Additionally, I have sang classical music in college choir and have sung a repertoire including "The Requiem" , "Gloria". and "The Messiah."

About Karen

Karen R. was born and raised in a musical family in Lindstrom, Minnesota. Karen has loved to sing and play instruments almost all of her life, and became passionate about music early in her childhood. She has played 7 instruments proficiently including piano, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, ukulele, trombone, recorder, and voice (also an instrument). As a child, Karen took private instruction in piano and classical guitar. She sang and played guitar in her first band in the fifth grade! In high school she played trombone in band, bass guitar in stage band, and sang in the high school choir and s
tage chorus. In high school, she also sang and played acoustic and bass guitar in a rock band called the 6 pack, which performed for school dances and community events. Karen was also the singer and guitarist, leading the Young Life group. Even though Karen has had training in many instruments, she has had the most training in voice.

As an adult, Karen has sung extensively in church choirs, women's ensembles, and has been a featured vocal soloist at church services, Christian retreats, and women's ministry events. She was extensively involved in vocal music at Grace Community Christian Church, where she was the singer and guitarist leading and teaching songs to women Bible study groups, preschoolers at vacation Bible school, and Kids Praise Club for elementary aged children. For Kids Praise Club, she also taught the children the choreography for the performances. Presently, Karen is a Choir Director for the Choristers at First Presbyterian Church (FPC) in Mesa, AZ., and also taught singing and choreography to the children at VBS at FPC. Additionally. Karen is presently a substitute elementary school teacher at Grace Community Christian School, and recently taught class guitar and class piano to students at East Valley Educational Program.

During Karen's college career, she was a voice major at Mesa Community College (MCC) and Grand Canyon University (GCU). At MCC, she performed in the Sun Valley Chorale (SVC) and Cadence women vocal jazz ensemble. SVC performed classical songs at the Mesa Arts Center, and Cadence performed jazz songs for MCC events. Karen was also involved in musical theater at MCC. Karen was an opera singer at Night at the Opera, and a Broadway singer at Broadway Bound, both at MCC. At GCU, Karen has been in the President Singers, Canyon Singers, Canyon Chorale, and Union Choirs. Canyon Singers were the honor students and ambassadors for GCU and traveled locally and out of state to recruit students for GCU. As a voice major, Karen has had 9 semesters (4 ½ years) of private voice instruction under the tuteladge of Dr. Cathy Hauan at MCC, and Dr. Sheila Corley at GCU. Karen has three degrees from GCU: A Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a Minor in Music, a Master's of Education in Reading and Curriculum, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. Music is Karens passion and she desires to teach it to all ages and stages of people. Music is the universal language and creates joy and healing in the soul.

Presently, Karen owns her own home music studio called Starshine School of Music in which she teaches piano, voice, and guitar. Karen also teaches Take Lessons music students (an online music student placement company) piano, voice, and guitar in her home. Karen is also an active Mary Kay Consultant.

*** Lesson Details ***
Karen's teaching style is very patient, nurturing, encouraging, and fun-loving. Karen is a teacher who sets loving but firm boundaries and guidelines. She implements structure and organization, but is not overly strict and harsh. She believes in encouraging, loving, and imparting knowledge with her students so that they will maximize their potentiality and their inner musical stars will shine.
Karen teaches piano, voice, guitar, and music theory for beginning through intermediate (for voice she teaches beginning through advanced). The curriculum that Karen uses is varied according to the student's personality and learning level. She uses her vast knowledge and information from her education and past experiences, and also Alfred Essentials of Music Theory, Alfred's Instructional books, Hal Leonard Pro-vocal Series, Faber Piano Adventures for all levels, and other resources. She also uses an assignment lesson plan book so that each student will know her clear objectives, what is expected of them and so that communication is established with the student's parents if the student is under 18. Additionally, Karen uses incentives, a point system, and rewards for self-discipline, consistent practicing, musical accomplishment and growth, and a good attitude.
Karen's students learn and perform remarkably well because of her very loving, organized, and comprehensive teaching style. They progress in amazing ways on a weekly and monthly basis. They look forward to coming to their lessons because they are treated with such respect and care. They know that Karen has such a passion and love for music, which is so contagious and is passed on to them. Therefore, these music lessons are enjoyable and enriching for the teacher and student alike.

Phoenix, AZ

All Voice Types, Soprano, Mezzo, Contralto, Tenor, Baritone, Bass;

About Carolyn

I am an experienced voice and piano teacher with 20 + years of teaching experience.

I am passionate about teaching, and my experience includes teaching voice and piano to elementary through college students, in academic settings and in my home. I love working with people of all ages.

As a soprano, I have sung professionally with many choral ensembles, and have performed as soloist in recitals and concerts throughout the US. I have appeared in musical theater and opera productions in leading roles. I have also been a church and college choir director, and vocal coach for musical th
eater.

In addition, I have performed as piano soloist in various settings, and piano accompanist for choirs, singers and instrumentalists in church, contest and concerts.

Currently, I am pursuing a Doctorate in Choral Music at Arizona State University.

Having recently relocated from Minnesota, I would love to establish a studio here where I can share my expertise and passion for music with students. My approach is that music should be fun and satisfying. I want students to have the enjoyment of accomplishing great things, and build on their natural abilities and love of music. I look forward to meeting you, and seeing where your musical talents can take you!

*** Lesson Details ***
Each voice lesson begins with warming up: movement:, stretches, breathing, and relaxation while focusing on good posture. Following that we continue warming up the voice with appropriate vocal exercises. If desired, we can spend time sight singing (reading music). Then we will turn to your chosen piece(s) of music. You could bring in a song or aria of your interest, or I could suggest pieces that I feel suit your voice. Some areas that I like to focus on in are relaxation, posture, breathing, support, use of registers, placement, growing your voice in size and range, intonation (pitch), tone color, clarity and consistency. My ultimate goal is to help students sing with musicality and expressiveness.

For piano, we may begin by working on things like hand position, posture, relaxation of the body and then exercises, including scales and chords. We may also incorporate music theory.
After a warm-up, we will focus on chosen music. I like to use music literature that is appropriate to the student's level, which gives enjoyment, and also increases breadth of knowledge and expertise. For beginning students, there are many good series available that I like to use, such as Bastian or Alfred.

Its very important that students feel comfortable in their lessons. I am sensitive, flexible and open to individual likes and dislikes, and any thoughts or concerns you have. These are your lessons and I am committed to helping you get the most out of them!

Ginni A.

Chandler, AZ

Singing opera takes a love of the music, dedication and superior technique. It has been Ginni's pleasure to help students sing music from operas for 20 years.

Students learn to:
Increase vocal strength, range, power, articulation, agility, versatility
Sing arias from the Opera Repertoire
Develop Vibrato
Develop Classical tone or sound
Develop character
Understand the plot
Understand the mood and setting of the song
Learn how to be expressive using vocal tone, inflection, and body
Body movement

Ginni asks her students to remember three things: Try, Relax and Have Fun!

About Ginni

You can learn to play piano or sing at any age! Whatever your musical goals are, Ginni will help you to reach them.

Ginni has been teaching piano and singing for 21 years. Whether you are a beginner, an intermediate or advanced she will help you to learn and have fun making music!

Technique is key! As a professional musician Ginni knows the importance of good technique. Great technique gives the performer confidence and the ability to excel.

Ginni's piano and singing students are taught how to use their bodies to perform at their best. Some of the methods that Ginni uses come from
her studies at university, personal study and from watching, listening to and performing with world class musicians. From all of this experience, Ginni developed a proven method for teaching piano and singing that helps students progress quickly and perform with ease.

Performance anxiety can be overcome. Using the tools that Ginni has developed, students relax, focus and enjoy their performing experience.

Reading music is important for pianists and singers. Ginni helps beginning through advanced students to more fully understand written music and quickly sight read it.

It’s important to perform songs that you enjoy. Students help choose supplemental songs that they love whether that be contemporary pop, traditional classical, Broadway, jazz, country or any other genre that they would like to learn.

Ginni’s piano and singing students increase their range, power, agility, control, confidence and expressiveness through technical exercises, scales, arpeggios, applying technique and lots of encouragement! Students grow the more that they share their talents. Students of Ginni’s are invited to participate in recitals, the Arizona Study Program and are guided through auditions, solo and ensemble performances.

Ginni uses the latest technology to help her students, whether by finding a song online for a student to listen to and learn from, transposing a piece on keyboard, improving the sound of an iphone song by plugging it into a speaker system or by using a mic to learn microphone technique.

A century old stand up piano may not be cutting edge technology but, Ginni’s sounds beautiful and her students enjoy playing it. Music is such a gift. So is participating in and watching the growth and progression of others.

Ginni asks her students to remember three things:
Try, Relax and Have Fun!

My daughter has been taking lessons with Ginni for almost 3 yrs now. She started when she was 6 and Ginni is so patient and nurturing with her. Ginni always praises her and makes her feel like a superstar. She always takes the time to thoroughly cover the new concepts and does not hesitate to review them again if my daughter hasn't quite caught on. Even though it takes us about 25 mins to get to her lessons, I'm willing to make the trip because Ginni is such a great teacher! I highly recommend her for lessons.

Ginni has been our 8 year old daughter's piano teacher for more than 4 years. She is consistently positive, engaging and creates a environment that has helped our daughter stay engaged in the learning process. Ginni is obviously well trained herself, and is attentive to ensuring that her students learn good fundamentals and are grounded in theory. Yet she manages to balance this attention with simultaneously supporting real enjoyment of the learning process and playing. She is truly a remarkable teacher whom our daughter absolutely loves.

I love Ginni! I had very little experience singing before and it's only been a month and a half and I have my basic technique down! I still need to practice of course, but I feel more and more confident after each lesson. I have always enjoyed singing but nothing feels better than properly using my voice, being able to express emotion while relaxing and in comfort. I make the drive from Scottsdale just for her!
