Students can start from the very beginning or come in to improve technique, sound, skills, ear training, intonation, and reading music. Students work on scales, exercises for tone and coordination, vibrato, solos, audition music, and orchestral music. I can recommend many youth orchestras in the area. Some of my students work on auditions and music for All Southern Youth Orchestra and All State Youth Orchestras. I go at the student's pace and also start out many beginners. Students learn to sight read and practice rhythm exercises to prepare for orchestra auditions and playing with other musicians.

About Jill

I have taught music for more than 13 years.
In 2011, I graduated with my Bachelor's of Music in Performance Violin and Viola from the Cole Conservatory of Music at the California State University, Long Beach where I also studied conducting, music theory & history, and piano. I have been playing the violin for 21 years and had over 17 years of private lessons along with college instruction on violin, viola, and piano. I also played the piano for 7 years with private instruction and the viola for 9 years.

I perform professionally with the Montage Symphony, Dana Point Symphony, and Symphony
Irvine as Assistant Principal Violist. I also play violin and viola for operas and musicals.

I performed as a solo violinist at the Orange County Fair in 2007 and 2008 with a Bluegrass band. I was a concerto competition winner in 2004 and performed Haydn's Violin Concerto No. 2 with the South Orange County Chamber Orchestra as a soloist. I am also a soloist, member of violin and cello duo, and trio for professional events.

I began violin as a Suzuki violin student. I teach the Suzuki method mixed with a flexible, traditional method that teaches note reading, rhythms, shifting, theory, scales, and memorization. I accept students of all levels.

I've had many of the same students for 2-5 years. My students have biannual recitals featuring violin, viola, and piano students levels 1-7.

You can listen to my unedited performance recordings at

Additional Music Education:

I studied the violin privately with violin teachers from the Julliard School of Music and Ken Aiso, teacher at the Royal Academy of Music in London. I also attended music camps like the Montecito Music Festival and Musishare's former Chamber Music Festival of 2004.

*** Studio Equipment ***

Jill is extremely knowledgeable with all kind of mistakes that students may have. I am always amazed by the interest she shows to give us more of her knowledge and motivation.

Also, Jill shows enormously great patience to make students comfortable and motivated playing music.

I strongly believe she is one of the best teachers in takelessons team..

Angela C.

Long Beach, CA

Experienced teacher of 30 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages. I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of classical skill. I specialize in classical music and provide multiple playing opportunities for my students throughout the year.

About Angela

My musical education began while sitting on my mother's lap as she taught piano lessons. I began studying cello with a member of the Kansas City Philharmonic at age 9, and at age ten, I followed in my mother's footsteps to play the flute. I played all three instruments, (piano, cello and flute) until high school when it was became clear to me that I wanted to be an orchestra teacher. With this dream in mind, I began playing the violin as well.
I graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor's in Music Education in 1989 and again in 1999 with a Master's degree.

As a youngster, I was the youngest member of the Kansas City Youth Symphony and the Kansas City Cello Choir performing with these two groups for eight years. I was chosen from applicants nation wide, to perform in Carnegie Hall and travel Europe with "America's Youth in Concert" and I was a three time All-Stater.

While attending Drake University, I played in the Drake University Orchestra and the Des Moines Symphony, and I was the winner of the Young Artist Competition awarding me the honor as featured soloist with the Drake Symphony Orchestra.
In 1993 I began playing with the Encore String Trio. This trio plays on a regular basis for weddings and receptions.
I currently play cello in the Encore String Trio, and viola in the Long Beach Community Orchestra.

My teaching experience includes nearly 30 years of private teaching. I've had the pleasure of teaching all areas of music; elementary general music, band, choir and orchestra. During my 20 years of teaching orchestra in the public schools, I implemented many innovative opportunities for my students such as children's concert which drew more than 700 people in attendance, strolling strings, cello choir and a viola choir, all of which proved to be very motivational for the students. My goal of teaching is to make music fun for all.

I believe music should be fun. I provide you with several playing opportunities throughout the year, ranging from solo to group playing. I provide large group playing opportunities at Christmas and at the recitals. Every group playing opportunity is accompanied with food and games for all. This studio is FUN!

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you are studying for recitals, competitions, a music career or just for fun, you can expect equal attention to technique and musicianship in your lessons.
Lessons will be tailored to each students needs which may include flash cards, supplemental materials, ear training, sight reading, technical studies, scales, and solo work.
You are never to old to learn to play an instrument. Over half of my students are adult beginners. Because of this, I provide group playing opportunities and I organize a solo ensemble contest for my students. This gives opportunities to the adult beginners that they missed out on as a child. You will have a lesson by yourself, monthly mini recitals in my studio, and you will have the opportunity to play orchestra music as a group all right here in my studio. You are guaranteed to learn how to play your instrument, have fun and gain great friendships here in this studio. I'm looking forward to introducing you to our studio family.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The teachers studio is in a large room with multiple windows for natural light. The room includes instruments and stands in the middle of the room.

*** Specialties ***
I use the Suzuki method books. I am a classical player and I teach classical music.

Michelle P.

I began playing viola in 9th grade, after several years of violin and cello and I love the unique, beautiful sound of the viola!

About Michelle

Hello, students and parents!!!

My name is Michelle Packman (yes, kinda like the video game!), and I'm a professional, full-time cellist and music teacher in Southern California.

I have had the opportunity to do so many cool things with music over the years! I get to travel to other states, play in beautiful places like Carnegie Hall, give lectures at music schools, play in music videos with famous rock bands, even record for video games like League of Legends, and cues in prime time televion! Wow, how lucky am I? It all seems surreal. How did I get to do all of those cool things?

's because I had so many awesome, loving, caring mentors who were there for me all of those times I got down on myself and felt like giving up. Those moments on the road to fulfillment are huge stepping stones, moments I will never forget and always have to lean on when I am filled with doubt. The power of an encouraging word of a mentor is priceless, and I believe the blessings I have are a testament to the presence of compassionate mentors in my life.

I've been teaching music for almost ten years, reaching hundreds of brilliant kids since I started teaching in my parents' house as a high school aged "orchestra member in-training", up through college and now in several teaching studios. I've always tried to be for my students like those mentors who were there for me.

To earn my performance degree, I attended the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music and studied with this really scary guy, Dr. David Garrett of the LA Phil. (He was only scary when I didn't practice hehehe). One of the things Dr. Garrett insisted I learned was how to teach the entire Suzuki repertoire for cello. This has come in handy just as much as all of the concertos and sonatas and etudes and hours of practice. Thanks Dr. G! :D

My teaching philosophy is centered around fostering a connection between music and happiness. The necessarily includes loads of encouragement, fun, the occasional happy dance, discovering musical intuition (basic improvisation and listening), a holistic knowledge of music (basic theory and history), anxiety management, and life-long lessons about the value of concentration and hard work. I believe in getting to know my students personally, and usually take some time out of every lesson to catch up on my students' lives. This may seem like a waste of time, but in fact is extremely important for the student to feel as though they belong in my studio and, in a broader sense, the world of music.

I FIRMLY OPPOSE harsh teaching methods like intimidation and over-work. If you're looking for someone to be mean to your child, please look elsewhere. As one of my teaching colleagues says, "students are precious". I believe a child's life is worth every effort, and this includes teaching them that success doesn't have to come at the cost of happiness.

I specialize in a couple instruments, but my most demanded subjects are all levels of cello (ages 7 and up), beginning piano (kids ages 5-12), intermediate viola, violin, bass, and guitar. Also, for students in Certificate of Merit or college level theory courses, I have a very good knowledge of music theory and offer all levels of music theory instruction (happy dances for older students included upon request).

Thanks so much for taking the time to read about my life and my teaching. Please ask any questions! I respond quickly and will get back to you asap!

My instruments are violin, viola, cello, guitar, and saxophone, and I have also taught, performed and recorded mandolin, piano/keys, bass guitar, banjo, drums/percussion.
