Scott B.

Forest Hills, NY

As a student of production and engineering in college to having self produced and released 4 albums, as well as producing albums for others, audio engineering has been a staple of my career and something I take much pride and joy in teaching. Learn how to properly use widely misunderstood tools such as compression, EQ, panning, mastering, etc.

About Scott

"a masterful guitarist -- really, a total whiz of a rare order."
--Hudson Valley Almanac Weekly

"a force to be reckoned with... sophisticated chord voicings, complex finger picking patterns, and a flurry of blues, jazz, and folk inflected riffs performed with a ringing acoustic tone and an undeniable rhythmic drive."
--Wired.com

Scott is a an internationally touring guitarist and songwriter based in New York. In addition to his work as an in demand sideman for various artists and bands around the country, Scott is also an accomplished bandleader and composer with four acclaimed release
s under his belt over the last ten years.

As a guitarist, Scott brings a modern, technical approach to traditional american styles - jazz, bluegrass, country blues, western swing and chick'n pick'n country guitar - but as a songwriter he gravitates toward straightforward rock, blues and folk.

Scott's guitar playing and songwriting has landed him features from American Songwriter, CMT, and more. He holds a BFA in Studio/Composition, with a minor in Jazz Performance, from SUNY Purchase in Purchase, NY.

*** Lesson Details ***
When studying with Scott, students can expect a comfortable and fun atmosphere that promotes experimentation and positive reinforcement. Employing a curriculum that is equal parts formal technique and informal playing of the students favorite music, Scott makes every lesson engaging and exciting for his students.

After 3 to 6 months studying with Scott, beginners should expect to be able to play many of their favorite songs, have a firm grasp on basic scales, chords, theory and sight reading, and can even begin writing their own songs and improvising solos!

If you're already an intermediate/advanced player, Scott will push you to find your unique voice on the guitar, and tap into advanced techniques and approaches that will help you fully realize all that the guitar has to offer.

Lessons are tailored to each individual student's particular interests and abilities. Wherever you want to take your guitar playing, Scott will get you there and beyond!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring an acoustic guitar with me. My student must only have a guitar of their own of any kind. If it's electric, an amp is preferable, but not necessary.

*** Specialties ***
Music, Guitar, Bass, Theory, Song Writing, Composition, Improvisation, Sight Reading, Advanced Harmonic and Rhythmic Concepts, Group Playing
I am schooled in Jazz, but have a passion for all styles, including rock, blues, country, funk, folk, punk, and world music.

My first lesson was wonderful! I have been playing guitar for 20 years, and have been in a rut for the last several. Scott has already challenged me in my first lesson and I have direction for personal practice.

Scott is not only an amazing guitarist, but he is a superb teacher. Kind, supportive, and has an uncanny ability to break-down difficult pickings and strums into understandable and easy to follow directions. Most importantly, very patient. I was self-taught in the 70s when everyone picked up a guitar, stopped as an adult and am now re-starting it again after 30 years-and enjoying every moment. Scott is able to teach any type of music or song and intuitively understands and teaches the guitar style that the student would like to learn. Any student who studies with Scott should consider themselves fortunate. Not only does he know his stuff, he is passionate about music and passing on this musical knowledge to his students.

Worlds greatest guitarist gives lessons (and he's a good guy too)

I have been taking lessons with Scott for almost 10 years. Lessons have varied from ear training to guitar to songwriting. He is one of the most knowledgable and gifted musicians/ teachers I have ever known.

Lesson structures have been both formal and informal (at my request). I take a lot of information and knowledge home from each one and plenty to practice. Whether you want to learn a song or you want to learn theory, he can explain anything clearly and comfortably meeting you on your skill level.

I was really uncomfortable with where I was musically when I first started taking lessons. Almost immediately after starting with Scott I was confident in talking with other musicians in their language.

Do yourself and anyone who hears you make music a favor, and get a lesson with Scott!

Erica Q.

Brooklyn, NY

I'm classically trained and write and record original compositions heard in film and TV, most recently Veronica Mars. I have over ten years experience with Pro-Tools and can take you as far as you'd like to go. I can get you started recording live instrument tracks or show you advanced production technique and how to create expressive and intricate midi instrumentation.

About Erica

I'm a multi-intrumentalist, songwriter, and singer. I've toured internationally performing my original music as well as playing multiple instruments in bands. I produce and record music that can be heard in film and television. I teach several instruments and genres of music and take your tastes and learning style into utmost consideration. I always begin with practical exercises to develop technique, then we can focus on playing the music you love.

To vocal students I teach exercises that develop technique and allows you to explore your voice. I will help you learn to make sounds you love
. Singing is created by breath and muscles which we have full access to. Anyone can learn with proper focus, care and practice. I can also help you with recording and microphone technique as this is my area of expertise!

For violin, viola and cello students, I teach a combination the Suzuki Method (learning through ear training) and traditional theory and sight reading. We can also explore fiddling, blues and the foundations of jazz and rock improvisation if you're interested.

For guitar students, you can choose the songs you learn or let me recommend ones appropriate for your skill level. We can incorporate music theory, classical repertoire and sight reading into the process in degrees of your choosing. We can also explore singing while playing, songwriting and recording technique when you feel ready.

I also teach beginner piano, which I recommend for anyone who wants to better understand the mechanics of music. We learn basic classical compositions, exercises, theory, and any song you choose.

Who knows what creativity learning music will inspire? You may eventually write songs and want to explore recording them. Our lessons are held in a top of the line pro-tools recording studio where you can learn recording technique from me at any point.

I'm a classically trained violinist as well as a pop musician. I am currently playing in a chamber group, Hudson River Stings, and produce and perform electronic pop music. My musical training includes private lessons with some fantastic musicians such as Raz Kennedy, Jennifer Turner, Bob Corff and Matte Henderson, as well as Jazz and vocal studies at S.U.N.Y. New Paltz, San Francisco City College, and Los Angeles City College.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a laid back teacher who will give you a push when you need it! Music is joyful above all else and sometimes it's incredibly satisfying to work hard. We can talk candidly about your musical goals to determine how rigorously or casually we want to approach your lessons and practice schedule.

*** Studio Equipment ***
P.A. and vocal microphones, acoustic, electric and bass guitars, violin, cello, midi piano and pro-tools studio.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my instrument and extra sheet music beyond the lesson books. I expect the student to have an instrument, metronome, and lesson book (Suzuki books and CD for violin, viola and cello, Hal Leonard for guitar and bass, James Bastien for piano. I provide sheet music and a practice CD for my voice students.)

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in combination lessons such as guitar and voice lessons with a focus on songwriting. I can also help violinists who wants to transfer their knowledge of theory to guitar or piano and vice versa. We can incorporate recording techniques into any lesson.

Eric M.

Astoria, NY

About Eric

Throughout my life, I have always been drawn to music and teaching. That passion would lead me to attend Berklee College of Music, and after graduating, move to New York to pursue a career as a music educator.

I began teaching professionally in 2007 while still attending Chandler-Gilbert Community College. During my time at CGCC, I was a co-founder and tutor of the Music Theory Study Group. In my last year at the college, I won first place in the composition division for the Artists of Promise contest with my electric guitar concerto titled "IDP's of Darfur Prelude and Concerto," which
granted me a chance to perform it at the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix, AZ. Shortly after the performance, I was awarded with the 2008 Most Outstanding Theory and Composition Student Award.

During my time at Berklee, I worked on projects involving composition, performance, and production/engineering. Throughout my time at Berklee, I was featured on several performance and recording sessions as a guitarist. During my last year, I was an orchestrator for "Curtain up!," a student concert that featured original musical theatre works, and was selected to lead The Cooperative Big Band, a student organized ensemble for senior jazz composers.

Currently, I teach children and adults within a wide range of formats including private lessons, summer camp, rock band classes, and theory classes.

*** Lesson Details ***
My philosophy as a teacher starts first and foremost on the idea that music should be enjoyed. With that in mind, I feel it is my role as a private instructor is to leverage what it is students enjoy about music as a means to expand their comfort with performance and musical concepts. An advantage to the private lesson setting is that it allows the instructor to taylor the curriculum and approach to the individual student. I am here to help students discover, set, and reach goals that fit them, as well as expose them to musical styles, content, and ideas that they might not discover on their own.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Raven RG100 amp, 1/4 cable, music stand, and tuner.

For production: KRK Rokit5 Monitors, Mackie 1202VLZ mixer, basic acoustic dampening, and Mac Mini with Logic, Pro Tools, Reason, Sibelius, Finale, Izotope, and Waves Plugins.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring my own instrument, students are expected to provide their own instrument, and, as needed, amplification. I recommend students have their own music stands and tuners.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in contemporary styles, including pop/rock, funk, jazz, and metal to name a few.

A great person and a great teacher.

At first I hesitated starting guitar lessons with my child because of his young age, but then met Eric. My child has a short attention span but Eric managed to keep him engaged and happy about playing the guitar! He is really intuitive and understands children very well. He knew how to eliminate distraction during the lessons, and how to keep my boy focused and interested.

I cater each lesson to keep you inspired and learning. I'm a master at Pro Tools but can teach you how to record and mix on any DAW or analog set up.

My recordings and mixes have been on radios, film and televisions internationally including NPR, the BBC etc... They've been featured on commercials by Capital One, National Parks Foundation, Claire's Cosmetics, Avis, Hot Wheels, and TV shows like Gossip Girl, The Good Guys, Flipping Out etc...

My mixed down sounds have been written about in magazines like Spin, NME, Paste etc. Many of our recordings have been in the top 100 CMJ college radio charts and have led bands to touring the world.

About Gary

Hello! I'm Gary L, I teach in person or online out of my recording studio. I will also come to your place if that's more convenient. We can also do online lessons via Skype, Facetime or Google Hangouts.

I've been a professional musician and recording engineer since 2004. I love to teach and pass on my knowledge and experience. Watching students progress is one of the most rewarding things for me.

I've toured internationally as a singer, guitarist and bassist with my original music and also as a hired sideman. I run a succesful studio out of Bushwick Brooklyn called Young Love Studio
(
http://www.younglovestudio.com )

My songs and recordings have been on radio, film and TV internationally including NPR, KEXP the BBC etc... They've been featured in commercials by Capital One, National Parks Foundation, Claire's Cosmetics, Avis, Hot Wheels, and TV shows like Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Gossip Girl, The Good Guys, Flipping Out, Teen Mom etc...

I created a music app for iOS called MicSwap:

Here I am interviewed by Forbes magazine:

Here's an interview with me in Sonic Scoop:

I'm also the sound recordist for the popular RISK! podcast with Kevin Allison which averages 900,000 downloads per episode.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/risk!/id334724074?mt=2

I have a BA in Audio and Film Production from SUNY New Paltz. Prior to running my own studio, I worked as an engineer in a few professional recording studios with some amazing talent. I've had the experience of working in the studio with grammy winning producer Nellee Hooper (Bjork, Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt, Massive Attack). I've recorded Grammy winners Molly and Jay Ungar, bass monster Tony Levin, legendary drummer Steve Holley (Wings, Elton John, Joe Cocker), horn player Tom "Bones" Malone (Blues Brothers, SNL, Letterman Band), played guitar and recorded with The Cribs frontman Ryan Jarman along with a slew of other super talented people above and below the public radar.

When it comes to the recording studio, not all engineers are musicians. I am youthful, creative, enthusiastic, positive and fun. I believe in the importance of good gear, but feel that musicians don't need to spend large amounts of money to get a great recording. Of course nice microphones, preamps and compressors help, but I believe that ears, technique and quality gear are most important, in that order.

On a personal note, I'm also a stand-up comedian and a musician/songwriter with 5 records released under the band name Setting Sun. ( https://settingsun.bandcamp.com ) All these records were written and recorded by me and I also played most of the instruments besides the strings and horns. I've studied at UCB and The PIT where I took classes on improv and sketch comedy writing. I'm very easy to work with. I like to have a good time, but also take my work seriously.
