Singing Lessons in Fort Worth, TX

By LK F. - Fort Worth Singing Teacher

Are you a singer looking to take singing lessons in Fort Worth? In Texas, where everything is bigger, the opportunities are vast - especially in Fort Worth, Texas. Fort Worth is a great place to be a singer. The Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) Metroplex is one of the busiest places for musicians of all genres. Singers at every stage of their training (pun intended) can find multiple opportunities to supplement their private singing lessons in Fort Worth by performing in local groups, joining music clubs, local auditions, classes, workshops, festivals and more.

Before you sign up for that next audition or join a band and start booking gigs, make sure you have your priorities in order. Know what it takes to move forward as a singer. As Malcolm Gladwell argues in “The Outliers,” it takes about 10,000 hours to master a particular skill. So, as a singer, know that it will take much time and practice before you can start gigging, auditioning, etc.

Fort Worth Opera, a world-renowned company, offers a full season of programming with many additional programs and opportunities for students. Bass Hall hosts national tours and productions with many options for students, as well as summer camps and workshops. National talent agencies like Fort Worth Talent (www.fortworthtalent.com) offer weekly classes and seminars, as well as free showcases to show off new and emerging talent.

If you’re interested in karaoke, there is a website just for you: Dfwkaraoke.com. Additionally, be sure to check out “Karaoke On The Fly”, a karaoke show at Cassidy’s every Thursday evening (http://www.cassidysfortworth.com/). Have fun showcasing what you’ve learned in your singing lessons in Fort Worth!

If you are a competitor - it is all here. Dallas Opera. Check. “The Voice.” Check. Six Flags Amusement Parks. Check. And of course, if you think you’re the best singer in Texas, you want to visit www.thebestsingerintexas.com or try and find a recording contract through the competition at www.unsignedonly.com.

Some great options for musicians to perform, to listen and to network include the many open music groups throughout the metroplex. In Grapevine, there is a live music Meetup group that meets once a month for acoustic musicians and singers. There is a DFW Karaoke and Music Lovers (live bands) open group that singers can sign up for notifications. “Step Stool to the Stage” in Bedford invites a wide variety of performers to share their talents. There are also Irish music, folk music, Bollywood groups and more for singers at every level. Information on many of these open groups is here: http://group-singing.meetup.com/cities/us/tx/fort_worth/

Come sing in Fort Worth! It’s time for you to be heard!

Susan T.

Grand Prairie, TX

We will learn vocal health care, anatomy of the breathing apparatus (how sound is formed and released from the body), proper breathing technique and exercises, warm-ups for tongue, lips and vowels, diction, pitch control exercises if necessary, find your range, then onto learning your favorite songs or genres.

I prefer to teach combination piano/voice, or guitar/voice, those students that wish to sing and accompany themselves with an instrument.

Lastly: Please come to me with long term goals of learning to sing, or enhancing your natural-born singing voice. Through my years of experience teaching voice, I have found many students come to me with delusions of grandeur - to attain fame from American Idol, The Voice or other types of entertainment shows. Please come to me because you love to sing and have, perhaps, professional goals and aspirations. It is a learning process, just like any instrument, and doesn't occur overnight, or after taking just four or five lessons.

About Susan B.

I would first like to say that I was born into a musical family. My Dad (choir director) and five older brothers were not only the majority of the choir in our large Catholic church, but Dad had a "tame" Frank Sinatra singing style. My mother played harmonica and piano by ear so acquiring musical intellects spread quickly to all of us. Most of my siblings sang and played instruments as we had a piano, guitar, organ, harmonica, trumpet, clarinet and a recorder to use as we pleased, with or without a music teacher.

I started singing and playing the piano at age four. With consistent encour
agement from my oldest sister (a professional organist for 40+ years), I learned piano and music theory while I was learning to read English, started guitar at eight. A natural born singer, I learned the basics of voice while in choir from middle school through high school while accompanying myself on piano or guitar when singing privately or for others. I wrote my first song at 17 and worked my way through college playing original music in coffee shops while earning my bachelors degree. After college, I started touring across the US (this was long before American Idol and the Internet when if you wanted to make it, you had to "pay your dues" on the road first). Working in the studio was always the most fun and challenging, my first original song got air play in 1990 (this was before CDs).

I received international distribution of my original music starting 2004; however, around that time I learned that performing was not my preferred way of providing service to others - teaching then become my passion. So while working for a local public school district as substitute teacher for general music classes (orchestra, band, choir as well), I was asked to write and teach a beginning songwriting class. From the very first day I had kids' attention wherever I went; and some of those students eventually recorded their own songs in studios.

After 30+ years of professional musicianship spanning across two continents (US and Germany) with originally produced music available on iTunes and two CDs on the market, I have found a unique way of teaching music to others. I especially enjoy teaching families (children, parents, grandparents, cousins, etc.) that want to learn to play a variety of instruments and music together. Married couples are wonderful to teach as well, I can usually get any combination of two or more people playing music together.

Annual recitals are every fall. I do not force anyone to play in the recital, however most everyone enjoys the experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
First of all, I'll need to know you or your children's goals, dreams and natural talent(s). What types of music do you love best? Are you more the serious type or fun-loving (I can work with both types of personalities but do require a respectful demeanor).

Lessons are once per week. It is extremely important to develop the brain, nervous system, physical coordination all together with momentum and repetitive physical movements; particularly, the first six months of learning.

I do book students on "Schedule-As-You-Go" but only if someone already knows an instrument and wants to take Combination Lessons: Voice/Piano or Voice/Guitar.

Please do not expect overnight success, hand/motor skills need to be developed and that doesn't occur with one or two lessons, unless you've had prior experience on your instrument and just need to refresh your brain's neural pathways.

If you are the creative type and wish to compose your own music, then by all means let me know as I teach not only composition, but arranging, music production, and the legal aspects of copyrights and distribution.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano lessons will be given on my grand piano. You will need your own guitar or ukulele, I will be using my Yamaha acoustic-electric classical nylon string guitar OR my Epiphone steel string guitar. Please see the photo noting the studio's microphones/vocal monitors, plus I have a variety of hand percussion. There are wide varieties of musical opportunities and experiences with me.

*** Specialties ***
Piano: Beginning/intermediate classical piano; pop, blues, jazz, hymns, praise music (piano/voice). Guitar: Beginning classical guitar (fingerpicking only), or beginning general guitar (notes, chords, fingerpicking, strumming, using a pick). Ukulele: Beginning note and strumming patterns. Voice: I can take you to professional levels!

Lastly, I would love to enroll students who want to learn Joni Mitchell's style of piano and guitar playing. She has never had any formal music training, only plays by ear, particularly on guitar she uses many open tuning inspired from sounds of nature (i.e., birdsongs, ocean waves, etc.).

Here are three recent written recommendations:

"I would highly recommend Ms. T. She has been coming into our home to teach myself and my three children ranging in age from 10 to 4. She tailors each one of our lessons to our ability level and she approaches each lesson with tenderness, care and respect. She has even created special lessons for my 4 year old to engage his creativity and ideas. We have used other instructors before, but have never had such personal attention. I couldn't imagine using anyone else."
Erin O. May 2012

"Ms. T has been teaching my 6 year old daughter classical piano for almost three years. Ms. T is very patient, knowledgeable and encouraging. My daughter wasn't excited about taking piano lessons initially but has really grown to love to play and looks forward to lessons with Ms. T. I recommend other moms give her a call."

"I am a 58 year old man who has always wanted to learn to play the piano. It wasn't until I met Susan that this dream became possible. I wasn't sure I could learn a new skill like this but she had me reading and playing music within the first couple of lessons. I am impressed with her teaching skills but her performance skills as well. She made me feel relaxed and confident from the beginning. I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn a new instrument and whether you are 4 or 84 she can help make your dream of playing a reality." R. Roberts January 2013

I am a very laid back instructor, though the classes are very well structured.

Usually, we progress with a chosen curriculum according to the students music vision and initial overview during the 1st few classes. However, all curriculums are supplemented to enhance student performance and comprehension. Our supplemental material is used to go swifter for material that you grasp well and understand, and slower with more repetition for that that you need more practice, without being monotonous. It is also used to provide appropriate but exciting reinforcement of all material to ensure that material is retained.

We are forever updating material and also incorporate games and enhanced activities to keep lessons interesting and refreshing as well!

I also have experience in music therapy, teaching autistic, ADD, ADHD and those with varying degrees of brain damage.

Ben H.

Euless, TX

I'm in a country band where I sing and play guitar.

About Ben

Hello, my name is Ben and GUITAR IS MY BUSINESS...AND MY BUSINESS IS GOOD so please consider me. I've been playing guitar for over 18 years and have been in playing bands for 12 years. Recently after the band broke up, I decided to further my education and went to Musicians Institute in Hollywood California. There I was taught by the best guitar players in the world. Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Scott Henderson, Tommy Emmanuel and Johnny Hiland were just a few of the great players who gave clinics there. I received a degree in Guitar Performance and the knowledge I received there made me UNDE
RSTAND the mystery that is the guitar.

I can teach Rock/Metal, Country (lead and rhythm), Blues, Alternative, Acoustic, Classical, Chord Melody, Melodic Soloing, Twang, Chords, Scales, Modes, Many different lead and rhythm techniques and more importantly any song you want to go over.

I feel learning to play your favorite songs is the most important and the most fun about guitar playing. After playing songs, some of the information given (scales, chords, theory, ear-training) starts to make some since and you begin to slowly figure the guitar out.

Theory and Ear-training I feel are very important to learn when trying to understand music. It just gives you a basic mathematical way of understanding how music works. It can be very frustrating to learn and takes some time to sink in so if you don't want to learn it then that is great. Ear-training is cool because when you start to understand it you can actually hear music and not just listen to it. You can listen to a chord progression on the radio and go home and play it and also improvise over it.

I encourage BEGINNERS through EXPERT to at least hear what I have to say. I have A LOT of information to give about the guitar. I played for ten years made 2 demo CDs, one full length album, another demo specifically for Metal Blade Records, was in a big cover band and so I thought I knew it all and was a great guitar player. Then I went to GUITAR SCHOOL in Hollywood and reality hit me.
I wasn't as good as I thought. When you hear the best guitar players in the world everyday for a year and a half like I did at Musicians Institute it makes you want to be better and practice, practice, practice. I learned everything there about guitar and music and I know the Right way to teach.

Please consider me for your guitar teacher I will make it fun and a good learning experience as well.

Thank you,
Ben

*** Lesson Details ***
It depends on what level the student is on and that is where we will go with the lesson. If you are a beginner we will start with the very basics. I try to make it to where you can easily understand everything taught. The most important part of the lesson is you are having fun with playing the guitar and also getting as much information as possible. Upper level students may want to go over a song they are learning or want to know about theory or chords. Usually we will talk about where you are at with your playing and then go from there.

Thanks.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Acoustic and electric guitar PA system, small amplifier for student

*** Travel Equipment ***
Books and paper. They should have guitar and pick

*** Specialties ***
Teaching Rock, metal, country lead, blues, ear training, theory solo improvization. Scales and chords and how they go together. Melodic soloing and chord melody. Can teach out of a book and can read music. But most importantly have fun and learn cool songs

Robert M.

Fort Worth, TX

My most specialized instrument of study is in the singing and speaking voice including the study of vocal anatomy as well as vocal pedagogy. I have equal success with the male and female voice from my training in alto/tenor at The University of St. Thomas.

About Robert

I am a Music EC-12 Certified Educator with a degree from The University of St. Thomas, working on my Masters of Music Education from Texas Christian University of which I am on full scholarship as the Graduate Music Education Assistant. I am also teaching at the All Saints Catholic School as the youth choral director, bringing on the development of future music programs, ensembles, and curriculum at this growing institution.
My previous career role was in General Music for Stafford Elementary School in Stafford Municipal School District from 2011-2015. My education experience covers many
schools and programs in the Houston area, including various HISD schools as well as working for the University of St. Thomas Music Preparatory school as vocal, ukulele, bass guitar, music history/theory, and piano instructor. In Fort Worth, I have already been part of several music opportunities such as doing contract work for the Cool Cats Studio and Music Junkie Studio in addition to holding a summer music camp at All Saints Catholic school.
My background in music is mostly vocal, working with choirs and ensembles my entire life. I have also spread my abilities to work with Bass Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Piano, ukulele, and voice. I have many experiences with different genres such as American Folk Music, Jazz (Early to Fusion), and contemporary Rock/Pop, World Music, Christian/Worship/Catholic Liturgy, Rn'B, and Country music.
As an Music Educator, I have the strengths of being a distinguished musician and Professional educator which provides me with advanced knowledge in my field of study and interest, teaching for every age group from pre-school to Adult as well as influencing the fun, creativity, and expression of music no matter what the instrument.

*** Lesson Details ***
The music lessons will consist of a concise and strong education of their instrument as well as essential theory and history. I develop individual lesson plans for each student and subject, working on formative goals and objectives to work towards for every lesson and throughout the year. I look forward to being able to help students accomplish and enjoy their instrument, utilizing their interests and genres with a variety of texts and literature at many levels, looking to always expand my own collection to meet the needs of the students. I am comfortable with providing digital and paper materials as well as providing recordings and video studying resources with YouTube. I know in my heart and mind that I have something to offer to any student at any level in my studio, and, I am equally as passionate about providing an honest atmosphere for evaluation and positive criticism. With every lesson I always encourage brief reflection over the practice, study, and instruction, responding to every critical juncture that comes along the way. Being a certified educator and music instructor, I know that respect, understanding, honesty, human emotion, communication, and professionalism are the most critical components of a healthy Teacher-Student relationship.

Over 1200 Lessons taught with Takelessons.com since 2010

*** Studio and Resources ***
I have the necessary tools to operate in and out of my studio. Within my workplace I always have my electric keyboard, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, music library, printer/scanner, recording equipment, full sound system with mixer amp, guitar amp, microphone and stand, tuner, music stands, iPad stand, and comfortable space and seating. I also have expanded my studio capabilities that is an entirely digitized database and curriculum. Starting in August 2015, I will also be able to provide lessons out of the Music Department of Texas Christian University.
I expect for the students to provide their own instrument so that they are able to practice at home. I operate on MAC OS and IPad systems that maximize the technological uses of my in home studio.
Be prepared to learn more than you ever anticipated as I provide many resources. I also push for supplemental music instruction within the lessons, adding basic training and music learning skills needed for accompaniment instruments such as the acoustic guitar, ukulele, and piano which allow for students to have a stronger understanding of their music.

I don't have much to compare to since this is the first teacher I have ever had on this subject matter. What I can tell you is Robert for exceeded any expectations I had for a music teacher. He is effective and can tackle individual challenges from unique perspectives that will help you overcome you hindrances all while being very personable. I received Sheet music, training CD's and training documentation. Additionally I received recordings of each lesson which I you will not believe how helpful that is, it's like have the lesson all over again.

Robert takes the approach of an professional educator with high expectations of his students, if you truly want to improve in the realm of music, singing or otherwise, you will improve with him. He wont have it any other way!

About Melodie

Music has been a very important part of my life for a long time. I began taking piano lessons at age 9 and also started as a church musician that same year. Some people would say I was a very fast learner! I was, and still am, very interested in every aspect of music. I began singing in church and school a few years after that. I have played and performed a variety of styles of music but I have the most experience with Christian music, classical, pop and R & B. I am confident that I can teach you whatever style you are interested in! I am currently a high school choral director and a min
ister of music for church. I also play in a band with a group of my co-workers where we perform mostly pop, rock and oldies. I have been doing private lessons since I was in high school and have taught school music for 25 years. I've taught general education, choir, band and general music. I also do some composing.

I attended Jarvis Christian College (1984-1989) where I majored in All-Level Music Education. I received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in May of 1989.

After I was hired at my first school, I started working on additional certification at Texas Christian University and Texas Wesleyan University. I completed the required subjects and received certification in general education in 1991. I am currently certified in 3 areas: General Music 1-8, All-Level Music K-12 and General Education 1-8.

Ms. Brookins is an excellent teacher. Although I had a few ideas of how to sing, I had no idea how technical it was. After a couple of weeks of struggling, she helped me further understand the complexity of the voice. She is great at going at the students pace while trying to help them grow musically.
