Carol D.

Dallas, TX

Focus is on improving style, range, agility, flexibility and protecting your voice.

About Carol

On singing and performing: I've been a musician for a very long time and can testify that music heals on a mind, body, and soul level! Though my official performances in front of audiences started with playing woodwind instruments such as clarinet, sax, and flute from elementary school through high school in band, my primary instrument in earnest has been voice for the past 27 years.

However, my Mom told me that I have actually been singing--well, humming (a recognizable tune at that!)-- since I was nine months old. I've lead numerous solos in small ensembles and large choirs over the years
, and was very involved not only with the adult music ministry at my church, but directed the children's choir as well. I'm a huge fan of arranging and creating harmonies for duets, trios, and small groups. I’ve shared the stage with Erykah Badu, Ruben Studdard, Rickey Dillard, Chrisette Michele, Ledisi, Peabo Bryson, and CeCe Winans.

I love musical theater, and my favorite credit has to have been when I played the role of "Mama" in Once on This Island (though Nunsense runs a very close second!).

I have a strong passion for the arts--music in particular, and have the musical talent and enthusiasm to guide, empower, and improve the vocal tone, projection, and pitch for the willing student.

*** Music Lesson Details ***
Every student is different--diversity is the spice of life! I tend to tailor my teaching style to the needs of the student. I do expect each student to work on their craft outside of "class" (even if it's just 10-15 minutes of practice a day) and come eager to learn. My teaching style is a co-creative process when it comes to helping students reach their goals. My demeanor is gentle and humor-filled, yet firm. Whether you're preparing for an audition (with all the mental, emotional, and physical energy and health that goes into it), want to hone your harmonizing skills, or just want to strengthen what's already inside of you to the next level for fun, I can help!

It's very important for my students to have a lot of fun as they are singing into their power and gaining more confidence not only in their vocal tone, projection and pitch, but in life as a whole!

*** Specialties ***
My specialties are gospel, pop, R&B, vocal harmonies in small and large groups, and jazz, though I have been classically trained by some of the best vocal coaches over the years.

On being an economist: Economics has been my trade and training since 1993. I've been an analyst at the Florida Legislature as well as consulted in the private sector, but my first love has always been teaching. I've been teaching the intro to micro- and macroeconomic classes consistently since the beginning of 2007 at Southern Methodist University. The algebra comes up a lot in these classes, so I've often ended up tutoring students one one in algebra as well. I was thrilled when TakeLessons added academic tutoring to their offerings in addition to music lessons. :)

***Economics and Algebra Lesson Details***

My students range in varying analytical and mathematical ability, so I meet them where they are when they come to office hours. Sometimes it just takes creating something concrete and practical from something that appears to be quite abstract. Sometimes it's catching up on the math. My approach is the same for any one-on-one endeavor outside the classroom. My goal is for each of my students to succeed!

Rockwall, TX

I have been singing as long as I can remember and teaching for more than 20 years.

Because the voice is uniquely individual, my approach to each student is strictly based on their needs as a vocalist. I listen to each student and develop a program for development based on the needs I hear as well as the desires of the student.

Of course, good technique is universal and there are some exercised I use with all of my vocalists to develop good habits.

About Lisa

I have been a music teacher and private lesson instructor for the past 17 years. I have a bachelor of science degree in Music Education and hold a teaching certificate for all-level Music Education. In my private studio I have taught students from 3-70 and have enjoyed them all! In addition to teaching music I also serve as the Music Minister for my church. Students coming to me can expect a tremendous amount of experience as well as a committed, honest and caring teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
For beginning piano students I like to use the Alfred series, supplemented, of course, with
songs/styles of music that interest the student.

Guitar, clarinet, and oboe students can expect to begin with the Essential Elements series as a primer and introduction. I've had a lot of success with these books.

Voice students are a bit different in that I don't use a specific method to instruct. I have many books that I draw from when teaching voice due to the unique nature of the individual. Depending on the style of music, from classical to jazz/pop, I have music that will teach proper breath support, vowel placement and tone.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: converted dining room with 3 guitars, young percussion instruments, upright piano and f/w keyboard. Seating available for parents.
Music ministry at First Christian Church in Terrell. Access to choir room with upright piano. Seating available for parents.

*** Specialties ***
Degree in all-level music education with specialty in voice.

Kerri S.

Forney, TX

About Kerri

I'm an extremely positive and motivated person who thoroughly enjoys sharing her gift and knowledge with other people. I have a Performer's Certificate, a Masters of Music and a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance and Opera. I have been teaching voice lessons for ten years and currently run a private studio out of my home in Forney, TX. As much as I love teaching, I also truly enjoy performing on stage. I have performed the professional opera roles of Lady Ella/Chorus in Cimarron Opera's performance of Patience. I was also previously a member of the Wichita Grand Opera Chorus, and recent
ly performed in their productions of Turandot, Don Carlo, Guillaume Tell, Tosca, Otello and Le Nozze di Figaro. I have also performed other professional roles such as Belle/Chorus in The Forum Theater's production of A Christmas Carol. Throughout my various degrees, I have also performed roles in Hansel and Gretel, Bastienund Bastienne, Dido and Aeneas, Die Zauberflote, The Lonley Empress, Les Contes d'Hoffman, Dangerous Liasons, Ariadne auf Naxos and Eric Hermansen's Soul. I began teaching voice lessons during my vocal pedagogy class, while getting my Masters Degree. I have been teaching consistently for a total of ten years. I began teaching for a community school for the arts in Muncie, IN. After I graduated with my Masters Degree, I taught lessons for a children's theater company in Manitowoc, WI until I started my Performer's Certificate. I taught for another community arts school during my Performer's Certificate in DeKalb, IL. After that, I began a private studio out of my home and have been teaching privately at my in-home studio ever since. I also have experience teaching Music Theory and Ear Training, Music Appreciation and Private Voice Lessons at the college level as an Adjunct Professor at Kishwaukee College in Malta, IL. I have always loved and enjoyed teaching! It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I am always eager to welcome new students of all ages!

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach classical technique that can be applied to any type or genre of music. I usually start with standard singing and breathing techniques. Then I will listen to a student's voice and determine their range and pick out a solo song based on their range, ability level, and the preferences of the student. I am a firm believer that no student fits into the standard "box" of teaching. Therefore, I tailor my teaching style to match the individual needs, issues, and goals of a particular student. It is very important to me that students enjoy their lessons and feel engaged in the learning process. My biggest rule is that they need to have fun and enjoy what they are doing. I am a very kind, up-beat and friendly teacher that believes in positive reinforcement and constructive criticism. I encourage my students to communicate with me on an equal level and to always ask questions if they don't understand something. Watching people learn and grow as singers, and knowing that you had a hand in it, is probably one of the most rewarding parts of being a teacher. It is this ideal that fuels my need to teach others.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have set aside a complete room in my house for my teaching studio. I have a Baldwin spinet, a Manhasset music stand, a wide library of music and a sofa for students and their parents to sit on.

*** Travel Equipment ***
In travelling to student's homes, I would expect students to have access to a piano or keyboard with at least 65 keys.

*** Specialties ***
Opera and musical theater.

TOYA N.

I've taught singing to children, teens, and adults since 2006. My Masters degree training has afforded me the opportunity to be well versed in effective vocal techniques that will help you succeed. My main goal is to help you to develop your own set of tools, and better understand your unique voice as an artist. Make sure to wear clothing you can move in during our sessions, and, most importantly, explore and just have fun!

About TOYA

I have taught acting to small children, teens, and adults in community, private, and collegiate settings. I taught acting at the legendary Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York City. My love of the arts has enabled me to study and perform in various cities throughout the US; including Los Angeles, where I studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, to Europe, Mexico, South America; then back to New York City, where I earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting from the prestigious Actors Studio Drama School.

I currently work professionally as an actor, singer, and TV
and radio host. I've been fortunate enough to work in film, TV, theater, musical theater, hosting, commercials, improv, and voice-overs. I am also a vocally trained mezzo-soprano. Because I am still a working artist, I can not only teach you craft, but can assist you in making the right choices to navigate your own way in the business. I offer private coaching to actors in theater and film, and singers in the US and abroad. I would love to share my knowledge and experience with you.

Melody S.

Dallas, TX

I start every lesson with vocal warm-ups. Then we learn different techniques to increase range, posture, and breathing. I can make song recommends and we work on songs that the student wants to learn. I set up video for my students to see and hear themselves. I accompany the student on either the piano or the guitar.

About Melody

My musical experience began at the age of 4 on the piano. I have been classically trained for most of my life. I have performed on soundtracks, played with bands (in genres from Jazz to Metal), and accompanied choirs. I have taught intro to piano and music theory since the age of 15. Currently, I teach throughout the Dallas metroplex, play in several bands, as well as write music for Television and Film.

I see music as a language. Once it is mastered, it can be shared with anyone, anywhere. My goal as an instructor is to provide my students with an opportunity to discover their own musical
potentials. From breaking the ice from playing for the very first time, to perfecting even the most structured and difficult pieces, I feel there are no limits. I feel comfortable teaching in any genre and always tailor my classes to match my students own individual learning style. In my lessons, I highlight important principles right from the start, such as posture, proper fingering, and rhythm training, to ensure no bad habits form that later are hard to break. As we become more confident in our playing, we transfer some of the traits contained within us. Those traits become the character and style of our "musical speech," which will help to define us as musicians. I recommend books and provide sheet music when we start learning songs. Learning music with me has been said by many of my students as, "the most fun they have ever had playing music."

In addition to music, I teach science in the subjects of Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology. I have my 200 hr yoga teaching certification and teach private class to aid people in living a healthy, fulfilling life.

Thanks again for reading my profile. Hope to meet you soon.
