Owen O.

Chicago, IL

About Owen

Howdy! I've been playing a stringed-instrument of one sort-or-another since the wee age of 6 and in a variety of contexts, from full orchestras to rock bands to world-class recording studios. I've composed original music for theatrical productions and mastered classical pieces for solo violin performance. I learned my instruments through a combination of private instruction, self-education, and years of real-world experience.

My first instrument was violin, which I started playing in fourth grade; I started private violin lessons in sixth, and continued with the same teacher until I was 2
0. At age 16 I started playing guitar and electric bass, and shortly thereafter picked up mandolin, ukulele. . . basically whatever stringed instrument was needed in whatever band or ensemble I happened to be playing with at the time. I've found I have an affinity for quickly learning any stringed instrument, a skill for which I owe credit to my years of private instruction on violin.

In addition to musical instruction, I offer audition monologue coaching for aspiring actors. As a former directing student I'm familiar with the Meisner, Strasberg and Atlantic schools, and am well-versed in script analysis and vocal production techniques. In addition to directing my own productions, I've performed in dozens, both at school and around NYC. I received my BFA in Theatre from NYU, and while I my focus was directing, I of course ended up composing original music and designing sound effects and musical cues for many student and professional productions.

I love teaching! I've taught students as young as 4 1/2 and beginners well into their 30s.

*** Lesson Details ***
I've got lots of experience helping absolute beginners get started on their chosen instrument. I like to cultivate an atmosphere that's relaxed, but focused. I firmly believe that positive reinforcement and regular practice are the most reliable formula for progress. Violin lessons follow the core Suzuki curriculum, a proven learning system that beginners of any age can grasp – it's how I was taught. I tailor lessons for Guitar, Bass, Ukulele and Mandolin to the particular student: If you're interested in learning a specific song, we use that song as a springboard; If you want to learn theory along with technique, we can incorporate that as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the front living room area which includes seating, guitar amp, digital keyboard, guitars, and bass guitar, violin, 2 ukuleles, mandolin. 1 cat in separate room. park on street, no permit required.

*** Specialties ***
I was taught a variation of Suzuki method on violin (classical) from age 8 through 18.

I have been teaching mandolin lesson for almost 18 years.
Students will learn everything from the ground up. While they move from one skill level to the next, instruction will include not only learning how to play their mandolin, but instrument and equipment maintenance, passing a proficiency exam at the end of each session

About Kelvin

I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University
of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I strongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

My 13 yo niece took video editing/production lessons from Kelvin. He kept her interested & engaged. He explained things well & in a way that she could clearly understand. She was eager to do the homework he gave her and to go to the next class. I recommend Kelvin highly. He's a fantastic teacher.

Mr. Kelvin began teaching my daughter when she was 4 yrs old...a year later she is able to recite notes and integrate and apply her knowledge of music theory to her music pieces. Mr. Kelvin is very enthusiastic every practice, but most importantly he is VERY patient and adaptable to my young daughter's mood...especially for a 5yr old who has a small attention span.

Patricio L.

Chicago, IL

About Patricio

I remain current in a wide variety of musical styles including Jazz, Rock, Blues, Classical and Mexican Folklore. I have also worked playing Greek music. My teaching experience includes teaching children in primary school, as well as individuals of all ages.

After thirty years in my musical career, I have come to the conclusion that the best way to learn is when there is joy in the study. I have a musical academic foundation, while obtaining an A+ status during my musical studies. Yet for me, the act of making music is more of a spiritual and auditory process than that of physical work
manship.

Perhaps like me, you find that you have diverse inclinations with regards to musical styles. I will help you attain a clear path to follow in achieving your musical goals, while providing theoretical and auditory techniques.

My personal goal is that the study of music becomes closer to the experience of playing music.

He estado en contacto con una gran variedad de estilo musicales, incluyendo rock, jazz, blues, clasico y folclor mexicano. Incluso he trabajado tocando musica Griega.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Electric Guitar, Fender and Marshall amps, TC Electronics multi effects rack, various pedals.

*** Travel Equipment ***

Lombard, IL

About Jonathan

TESTIMONIALS
"Jonathan's experience as a musician and teacher helped me advance tremendously in my ability to play guitar and understand music on a more advanced level. He's great at relating to his students and takes a genuine interest in their progress. " -Victoria L.

I have been teaching since 2001, and have had many valuable experiences since I started my performing career in 1998. Music has taken me to many places and venues. I have had the honor of performing at notable music venues such as the Congress Theatre in Chicago, the Royal George Theatre, as well as the UIC Pavilion in
front of 10,000+ people.

I have also had the distinct honor of performing with, and/or learning from some of the biggest names in the Chicago jazz scene, including Bruce Oscar, Nick Schneider, Bill Boris, Frank Dawson, Peter Sax, Steve Hashimoto, and Fareed Haque.

I have extensive knowledge and experience in every genre of music ranging from Blues and Jazz to Classic Rock, Metal, Punk, Funk and everything in between.

I have also authored a series of instructional guitar books for kids with fellow guitarist and composer, Nick Kazonis, which we are currently trying to publish. I am also working on songs and compositions for numerous projects in all different genres of music.

I feel it's important to have FUN, first and foremost. I have fun whenever I play, teach, and practice, and I try to get my students having a good time too. I want my students to look forward to their lessons, not to DREAD them.

I feel music has taken a backseat to a lot of other pursuits, but the importance of music cannot be emphasized enough. That is why I want each student to get the most out of their lessons whatever their musical goals may be.

Ryan B.

Chicago, IL

Been playing mandolin for three years and teaching it for one. Specialize in chording and strumming.

About Ryan

Ryan is a musician from Logan Square/Avondale who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. He's also an experienced singer and has been singing in some form of ensemble since the age of 4.

As a teacher Ryan's goals are simple. First and foremost he wants to make his lessons comfortable, interesting and fun. A close second is to build a strong base on the basics, so that as advanced techniques are built upwards, the structure (of skill) can support itself. And t
hird, an understanding of the theory and history behind the music is a great way to engage in the music beyond just the rote learning of technique.

After a brief foray in physics, Ryan settle into a degree in music at the University of Illinois, specializing in Ethnomusicology (the study of music of different cultures). This education gave him a strong background in music theory and history in the Western tradition, but also opened him up to a vast experience with a diverse cross section of music from around the world. His insatiable love for learning new instruments started here, where he studied music from West Africa to Bali.

Currently Ryan is a co-lead singer, songwriter and stringed instrument player for the local band Distant Brothers, a folk rock band based out of Chicago. They play venues throughout the Midwest, with some of the notable venues being Metro and Cubby Bear in Chicago. Another highlight of his time with the band has been a collaboration with Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra, where he not only was able to play in collaboration with the orchestra, but joined in the arranging and conceptualization of some of the pieces played.
