About Diego

Diego is one of Chicago's most sought-after Spanish and Flamenco guitar coaches and instructors. He has taught over 4000 private lessons and has given lectures and workshops in over 300 universities, elementary schools, and music schools, both nationally and internationally.

He graduated with highest honors in flamenco guitar performance from the Fundacion Cristina Heeren de Arte Flamenco (Seville, Spain). He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Research Psychology and focuses on applying the psychology of learning, skill acquisition, and expertise to learning guitar. With this knowledge,
Diego is able to help students achieve their goals quickly with utmost precision and effectiveness.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT FROM PRIVATE LESSONS?

The very first things we'll learn to do in our private lesson will be to RELAX, BE PATIENT, and HAVE FUN. Yes, mastering (or even just getting decent at) the guitar takes time and dedicated work, but it should NEVER...BE...RUSHED. Ironically, by relaxing and taking it slow, you'll excel rather quickly and, more importantly, CORRECTLY.

Lessons are based on time-tested methods in guitar pedagogy as well as on up-to-date scientific research in the neurological and psychological processes of skill acquisition and expertise. Key concepts you will learn to incorporate into your practice are "deliberate practice," "spaced practice," "interleaved practice," "performance practice," "mental practice," "conceptual practice," and more. My goal, as a teacher, is to help students learn to practice effectively and efficiently in order to develop the neurological pathways necessary to form, improve, and maintain high-level, musical skills.

CAN ANYONE LEARN GUITAR?

Absolutely! I accept students over 6 years old and at any experience level. Whether you've never touched a guitar before our first lesson, have been playing for a few years, or have your Master's degree in guitar performance, I can and will help you achieve your goals (so long as you do your homework).

WHAT KIND OF GUITAR DO YOU NEED?

For flamenco or classical lessons, you will need a nylon-string guitar (e.g., classical or flamenco), NOT a steel string guitar. If you don't own a nylon-string guitar, you can certainly rent one, but it must be available to you for home practice AT LEAST 6 days/week. For general guitar (with a pick), either a nylon-string or steel-string guitar is fine; however, beginners should use nylon-string guitars.

CAN YOU GUARANTEE RESULTS?

YES! If you follow my instruction and practice plan, I can certainly guarantee results!

Consistent and correct practice are the keys to success. The more consistent you are and the more correctly you practice, the sooner you'll reach your goals. This requires you to commit to practicing 6 days/week for an absolute minimum of 20 minutes/day up to a maximum of 3.5 hours/day; NO EXCEPTIONS! Again, you also MUST be practicing CORRECTLY. I'll show you how, but if you aren't practicing this way and are not consistent with your practice plan, I cannot guarantee results.

Been talking lessons with Diego for about half a year now. He's been one of the best teachers I've had (being 40+, I've had an opportunity to experience quite a few). He's enthusiastic about my progress and works hard at presenting material in a way, and at a pace that's right ofr me. I've been incredibly pleased with the quality of his instruction, and super happy with the progress I've made with his guidance. I'm looking forward to continuing my lessons with him.

Diego is a great teacher! I have been taking lessons from him for a while now and I have improved considerably. He is very clear with his teaching using the information learned through his information psychology. He explains why we must do something a certain way and this leads to a better understanding of flamenco and the guitar. He teaches not just guitar, but also how to practice. Diego is incredibly friendly and makes learning something so difficult manageable and fun!

Ayme F.

Chicago, IL

I studied flamenco guitar for 8 years under the instruction of Tomas de Utrera, NIco Angel and Rodrego Carteras. It is an expressive, percussive style of classical guitar that derives from Spanish and gypsy folk music.

About Ayme

Music can be as simple or as intricate as you want to make it. I will to teach you how to make the most of whatever knowledge and skill you have and to have fun while you do it. My tastes are all across the board, rock and roll, country, metal, opera, I love it all. So, let me know what you are into and we can go from there.
I started playing guitar about 20 years ago and have fronted several bands that have played all over Chicago and beyond. Although I have studied ethnomusicology, theory, and composition in college, I owe my greatest debt to the Chicago musicians who inspired and later ta
ught me. I began my private studies in flamenco guitar with Tomas de Utrera, Kelan Phil Cohran voice and theory, Hamid Drake instructed me on hand drumming, and from Rockin' Johnny Burgin I learned about the soul of blues guitar. Music is my first love, and continues to be an endless fascination for me.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe the pursuit of musical knowledge and skill should be a fun adventure and therefore, in each and every lesson with me I hope that there is laughter. I like to start off finding out what you are interested in learning, then I will create a curriculum based on those interests. I like to get students going right away playing songs so they don't get bored. By the end of three months you should have a nice little repertoire of 6 or so songs in different keys and a beginning knowledge of your instrument and by six months we will have moved into scales, solos and a bit of theory based on your progression.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room, street parking. I have plenty of guitars, amps, pedals and tuners here. I also have audio recording software so we can record your lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have guitar and tuner, student should also have a guitar.

*** Specialties ***
I would say I am best a teaching rock and blues guitar. I have also studied theory and flamenco guitar and would be able to teach beginners.

Joseph M.

Skokie, IL

Able to help students at beginner to intermediate level. Teach them rasquado and improvisation, also give them solid general right hand, left hand technique.

About Joseph

My Story:

As a guitarist in my early years I spent much time reworking my technique and gaining insight in how guitar playing really works. My early struggles gave way to a solid knowledge of the guitar and music.

This was gained through no small part through my High School music teacher, through master classes of Manuel Lopez Ramos and Abel Carlevaro and others.

These master classes helped me in a big way to develop teaching systems and principles that can help anyone to learn guitar easier and more effectively.

You
will gain from the knowledge of these world class guitarists and teachers which will help you to play better and more musical.

And from my musical background-of playing hundreds of songs and compositions of many styles and understanding of musical structure.

Teaching philosophy

I will give you simple technical training to help the hands work together and develop a musical sound. As I teach I look for your gifts (in creativity, musical playing etc) and actively look to enhance that gift.

When problems come along in your studies, I help you to solve them in a way you can apply them for yourselves. Teach and show students how music works and how to play artistically.

How to Start

Will work with you to find a convenient time/day to schedule lessons at your home or our studio

There is a money back guarantee on the 1st lesson so you can try and see how lessons can help you to reach your goals. Selecting the "get started now" button will put you in contact with our student counselors.

P.S. Take the first step in learning music by contacting us.

*** Lesson Details ***
Teaching for over 13 years in all major styles. Helping beginning or returning students of all ages (kids and adults). and backgrounds to learn music.Have taught all ages from 5 to 60 years old.

Will work to develop a personalized plan specifically for you and/or your child or family member.

Studied at Roosevelt University as a classic guitar major with music education and jazz studies.

Give students a well rounded education in all the major styles-techniques, teaching them finger picking as well as pick technique, chords and improvisation.

I specialize in building a strong foundation both musically and technically for people that have not played guitar or even music before and helping them to reach the musical goals they desire.

For the pick guitar I use the Mel Bay method along with handouts for chords/exercises and finger picking patterns This gives you flexibility to explore many musical styles.

For classic guitar I use the Sagreras or Parkening methods plus the same handouts as for pick guitar.

For electric bass I use the Hall Leonard Method, plus handouts.

I teach children how to practice and to keep a practice schedule.

I operate with a patient approach, a comfortable learning process. This helps you to learn properly and builds a solid foundation for your playing.

Lesson Progression

In general after 3 months you will know all the basic chords and how to change them. How to play the blues scale, read music /tab plus some songs with basic chords.

For the electric bass you will play blues patterns, read music and tab.

After 6 months you will be in general able to play bar chords, and more complex songs (with full chords).

For the electric bass more complex songs, movable major scales.

Keep in mind as you move through these studies you will be enjoying playing music and be moving towards the goal you had in mind in taking up music including learning the music, the styles you wanted to play.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I can provide a music stand and a foot stool. I can get them or show them where to get a method book They would just need a guitar.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can teach lessons at the students home in Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Morton Grove, Skokie, Wilmette and adjoining communities.

*** Specialties ***
Be encouraged that you and/or your family member can learn to play and it's not as hard as you think.

What I have found is it takes no special talent to play the guitar, just the desire to practice and learn. Lessons with a teacher helps you to learn quicker and more problem free, unlike other approaches. A teacher can help you personally when you have problems and questions. The investment you make will help you or a family member to play music for many years...

Teach most major styles folk, rock, blues, classical, finger picking, Jazz (Bossa Nova)
Also gospel, praise and worship guitar.

Wow! Shaun has far exceeded my expectations. He is an amazing teacher. He is prepared every week with lesson plans, he is a walking Encyclopedia for all things music and he is an extremely nice guy. Shaun is the real deal. He has the skills to teach everyone form the beginning guitar player to a seasoned professional looking to advance their skills. He is a patient person that takes the time to make sure you understand what he is teaching and more importantly he can explain why something has to be done a certain way. Shaun takes some the most complicated aspects of the guitar from rhythm to scales and makes it easy to understand and apply in the real world.

I have been working with Shaun for about a year, and have truly enjoyed my experience with him. He is an excellent instructor, very focused on technique and learning to play guitar the RIGHT way. I have learned to read music, improv, and am now learning performance pieces. I would definitely recommend him as an instructor.

I had been playing primarily heavy metal guitar for the past decade or so, but recently I had been itching to give classical guitar a shot. I chose Shaun primarily because he lived in my area and because he offered in-home lessons at a very reasonable rate.

After 6 months of lessons or so, I have to say I've had every expectation met and exceeded. He puts a lot of effort into designing his own instructional materials (exercises, theory work, etc), and he always comes to the lesson with a plan. He's also done a great job helping me develop proper technique (particularly in the right hand) and certain musicianship skills (e.g., improv, inflection/mood). The pieces he has chosen for me to work on have been both challenging for my skill level but also musically compelling.

Most importantly, he's just the nicest guy in the world, always has a lot of enthusiasm (but isn't over the top), and has an open mind when it comes to others' taste in music and what his students want to get out of the guitar.

In sum: my lessons with him have been very effective and have been a blast, I highly recommend him!

About Jim

Hi I'm Jim,
I have taught many students from children to seniors how to play and how to continue to study and improve on their own. My goal is to give you the tools and understanding you need to become the guitar player you want to be. My studies in guitar started at 8 years old when I heard the Beatles and then came to love the solo guitar as I moved into my teens. I attended the American Conservatory of Music and have been performing all over the city for the last thirty years. My usual program incorporates the studies I learned in the conservatory and I custom tailor it to to fit your ne

Jim is a wonderful teacher!! Although I have been playing and teaching guitar for years, the work I have done with Jim has really filled in the gaps in my knowledge.
He is patient and willing to work with my specific needs. Each lesson has a perfect balance of discipline and fun. He is very knowledgeable in all areas of music and great at imparting that knowledge in a way that makes sense. Lots of A HA moments:) I finally feel that I understand the fretboard and all of the nuances of theory. Thank you, Jim!!
