Paul W.

Chicago, IL

I tailor all my lessons to the individual students interests and wants.
Whatever your goals are, I'll help you get there.

About Paul

I have played the guitar for twenty years and have studied a wide variety of music including jazz, classical, folk, blues and rock. I’m skilled in acoustic, electric and classical styles of the guitar. I have an open mind about music and can appreciate any style or type. I have a firm background on music theory, so I am able to explain what I am teaching. I excelled in all my classes in college, music and Gen Eds, with a GPA over 3.75. I also have experience in teaching guitar or bass to students ranging from the ages of six to sixty six. I enjoy taking what I have learned and passing it
on to someone else to experience. I believe this is one way you can leave your mark in music. I believe the experience I have playing in bands, and learning songs with my ability of having relative pitch will make my students improve quicker. I am also a very skilled sight reader and can recognize key signatures and musical notation. I’ve also been playing electric bass guitar for 13 years now and have the same skill set as my guitar playing. In fact I am hired to perform more often as a bassist than a guitarist.
I went to Columbia College between 2000-2003 and I completed a Bachelor Arts in Music, Concentration: Instrument Performance.
I also went to Harper College between 1997-2000 and I completed an Associates in Fine Arts of Music.

Florin M.

Carcassi book guitar method

About Florin

I am an experienced guitar teacher / player with a BA in Instrumental performance and an MFA degree in Composition.
I have experience teaching all levels, in various styles (Basic theory, Improvisation, Jazz, Blues, Rock/Fusion, Classical Guitar) and I have taught students ranging in age from 6 to 55.
From August 2008 'till May 2010 I was a full-time teacher at Fun with Music in Chicago
I have studied in Chicago with Frank Dawson (Chicago Jazz Ensemble), Norman Ruiz (classical guitarist), David Bloom (Bloom School of Jazz), Peter Lerner and Bill Boris (guitar theory & improvisation).
I ha
ve shared stage with major names from the Chicago Jazz and Blues scene like George Freeman, Ari Brown Quartet, Clyde “Lightning” George.
I am also experienced in teaching music theory, orchestration & composition.

*** Lesson Details ***
For a beginner student at any age I try to shape my lessons in such a way that the student gets more familiar with the instrument in a pleasant way as much as possible. I am laid back when necessary and especially for a beginner I try to use more than one method so that when difficulty appears I may try to switch gears so that the student still finds it exciting to practice or to finish their assignments. A lot of times this becomes possible when, let's say, practicing a scale can be put aside and playing a few chords from the student's most favorite song is done instead. Then the interest and the joy of playing is still high for them.
For a more advanced student I can also be strict when, for example, improvising requires an extra amount of effort by studying alternative guitar techniques.
I use different curriculum materials, from the Carcassi method book in classical guitar to Berklee College material for an advanced student or from various 'Guitar for beginners' materials or books to simply deconstructing various songs or tunes and playing them at the student's request.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Has full recording studio set up in his apartment.

Owen B.

Chicago, IL

Classical guitar is the style of playing in which I am most fluent. It is what my degree is in as well as my primary stylistic focus. Ever since I was 15 I have been a freelancer, playing at weddings, art shows, churches, restaurants, and more. Let me help you learn the technique, the reading, the theory, the history, and expose you to the richest music written for the guitar.

About Owen

I am a university trained guitarist whose goal is to pass my love for music down to each of my students. Most of my students start as absolute beginners, but I welcome all ability levels. My students have gone anywhere from learning their favorite songs, all the way to being accepted into collegiate music programs! I know I have become the guitarist I am today because my former teachers kept me inspired and having fun from the very beginning. Passing this on means each lesson with me entails a balance of playing, listening, technique, stories, and laughs! The best way to learn is to create an
environment where you, the student, looks forward to picking up the guitar, and smiles every time you do. If you enjoy playing, improvement will come with ease!

I've worked with Owen in both teaching and performance settings. He is always on time, reliable with his part and has great ideas in rehearsal. On stage, he is energetic and musical. I have also had the opportunity to observe his teaching; he is very easy to work with and able to articulate his ideas clearly so that they can be best absorbed by the student. Owen is a great teacher and a very fine musician.

David E.

Oak Park, IL

This is the style of music I earned my Bachelor's degree. Teach all levels to improve a student's technique and knowledge of the beautiful genre.

About David

A fun, friendly, and professional Music Instructor at your service for Guitar, Piano, Voice, Bass, & Drums! I have a BA degree from Florida Atlantic University in Music Performance for Classical/Flamenco/Jazz/Blues guitar and I've also performed on the Piano/Keyboards for a couple different bands too. Presently, going back to School to earn a Master's in Music. Love to play & teach pretty much all styles of music! It is always a pure joy & truly rewarding to see my music students grow and flourish as musicians. I have been enjoying doing this now for 16 years- all ages & levels. I am also in a
multi-dimensional rock project and am a recording artist-

I believe it's important to learn the rudiments of music to build a good foundation (scales, chord vocabulary, theory, song-composition, performing techniques), but I also base the lessons on whatever the interests and strengths are for the student. For example, if you enjoy jazz more than classical we'll focus more on what you are particularly passionate about. I have also been a part of School of Rock Programs in which we provided performances for the students a la Jack Black. Please contact Takelessons to let the musical journey begin...

I was a little skeptical with my son, who is six years old,to start taking drum lessons because I thought he was too young. Well, it turns out that he is not and I am thankful that David is his teacher because he is awesome with him. He is very kind and patient. My son is learning a lot! I am very happy.

David is very patient teacher and he truly personalizes his lessons. He focuses on what you want to learn (e.g. how to read music, learn to play a specific song), and he gets you there with great, fun exercises to encourage learning. He is really good with beginners. I would highly recommend David for the Uke.

Matt was the first teacher I ever took private lessons with.. and will no doubt be the last. There is not one thing I bring to Matt that he doesn't know.. Ear training, theory, song writing, he knows it all. You can definitely tell that he's been playing for most of his life.

Besides this, lessons with Matt are always enjoyable, he's an easy to talk to, chilled out guy who always takes the time to explain things properly, you can tell from the get-go that this is a guy that just really cares about the progress of his students, he sends me extra stuff to work on outside of our lessons and I can 100% say that i have vastly improved my music knowledge since taking lessons with him, which in my book is the most important thing, because not everyone that can play really well can also teach really well.

At first I was a bit shy about taking private lessons, but immediately overcame this when I met Matt. I had been taking lessons online (youtube, etc.) for a year and thought I was progressing well on my own, but decided to try out private lessons to change things up. I am so pleased with this decision and I have progressed faster than I ever could have imagined.

Matt clearly has the expertise of a well seasoned music instructor. He seems to know exactly what to teach and how to effectively convey how to learn it - it is clear that he has taught many students and has years of experience. He is comfortable to be around and his lessons are well structured and curtailed to my level and skill. I am very pleased with the way Matt teaches, the pace in which we learn, and most of all, how much fun I am having! Before I felt like an decent guitarist, now I feel like I’m well on my way to be an excellent guitarist.
