About John

I am a 33 year old Trumpet, French Horn and Voice Instructor in the Ramona area. I have 20 years experience playing trumpet, French Horn and Singing and play in several groups around the
San Diego area including:
The Amalgamated, a Ska/Reggae Band
Full Strength Funk Band
Heartland Brass Ensemble
Trumpet R Us
Filarmonica Portuguesa Uniao De San Diego
Tierrasanta Lutheran Church,
Ramona High School Trumpet and French Horn Coach

I am very passionate about music, learning, teaching, performing and practicing. Every day my goal is to promote music, learn, practice and help peopl
e enjoy music either by listening or performing.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will start with good solid warm-up exercises focusing on breathing and proper technique for Brass playing. The 2nd part of lessons will be technique, Scales and method books for trumpet and french horn. The last part of lessons will be working on Solo repertoire and learning songs for performance, sight reading, playing duets and learning jazz improvisation if interested. Lessons will include sight reading, play along/sing along CD's Scales and technique as well as theory.

For my Trumpet Students I will use the Herbert L. Clarke Technical Studies Book to help improve aerobic endurance, technical and finger velocity as well as production of good tone quality. I will also use the Earl Irons Group of 27 exercises to help improve air flow, breathing control and fluidity of sound throughout all registers. I will also use the J. B. Arban's Conservatory method for other techniques including scales, double and triple tonguing, intervals as well as duets and solo repertoire. For jazz minded students I will start with basic fundamentals of improvisation including melodic improv, Blues forms and blues scales as well as reading through chord changes and playing in several modes and other scales used in jazz.

For my French Horn Students I will use the same technique books as Trumpet but learning traditional French Horn Solo repertoire, as well as Brass quintet/choir repertoire and orchestral and concert repertoire. Focus for French Horn students will be mainly on control of partials and tuning techniques.

For my Voice students I will start with good breathing technique and warm up exercises designed to get the vocal chords warmed up and get all the other muscles relaxed in order to produce great tone quality. Focus will be on intonation, and learning to use the air and support to extend the vocalists range higher and lower as well as gain power and confidence in singing. Each Vocal student will have a piece to practice or will bring a piece of their choosing in that they would like to learn and this will be used to apply the techniques learned at the beginning of lessons. Styles of singing that I sing and can teach are Classical, Jazz, Big Band and Standards, Oldies, Pop, Country, Soul, Rock, R&B, Christian Rock and Church Music and also harmonizing like in a duet style or choir/vocal ensemble setting. I will also teach performance techniques, showmanship, stage presence and the overall performance package every singer needs to have confidence while singing.

I am a classically trained musician on Trumpet, French Horn and Voice and reading music, articulations, dynamics and learning musical forms is an essential part to any performers success. I also have studied various jazz styles and improvisational techniques as well. I want to teach students the basics of good musicianship and help them to excel in learning, practicing and performing in their own selected styles of music, whether its classical music, or jazz/rock/pop/country and any other styles students are interested in.

My main teaching location is at the Ramona Music Center in downtown Ramona for students in the area. I have all items needed including music stands, CD player for play along programs as well as an upright piano.

San Diego, CA

Trumpet students will work out of a technique book that will help build the foundation. Once basic skills are learned we will start to search out the specific music you are interested in playing. So if you love a song on the radio, keep notes and we'll learn it!

About Bryan

I currently work as an Actors Equity Singer/Actor around San Diego and am a resident Music Director for SeaWorld San Diego. As an active actor and music director in San Diego I have worked with companies including Legoland, Sea World, San Diego Opera, Lyric at Birch, TAFFEE, San Diego International Fringe Festival, California Youth Conservatory, Martinis Above Fourth and have been a featured actor in two local indie films.

I have been immersed in music since the age of 5. Singing along to the radio and cassette tapes that my mom listened to in the car. I started training as a singer during
my freshman year in high school and have performed in numerous musicals, concerts, and operas since.

I feel that performance is an integral part of piano and vocal education and will make sure that my students are given ample opportunity to perform, whether it be at an Open Mic Night, or I arrange a recital or musical production to nurture each of my student's performance abilities.

First and foremost we need to have fun. Music is fun and so should the lessons be. When it comes to practice I recommend that students do spend time outside of the lessons practicing to ensure that they see results. If you choose to practice only while in the lesson you will get better but it will be at a slower pace.

Bryan has a huge amount of knowledge that he successfully delivers to his students. He does this, not only with vocal training but also with, a personal experience, of what it's like in the real world as a performer. I greatly appreciate everything he has done for me, and can't wait to continue learning.

Charles W.

La Mesa, CA

I have been teaching trumpet to students of all ages and levels for 10 years, and love using my experience as a performer/teacher to help my students progress. I have been playing trumpet since the 3rd grade, and studied with renowned trumpet instructor Charles Lauer for close to 7 years. I have played trumpet in small ensembles, orchestras, jazz bands, wind ensembles and musicals. I use a combination of different methods and books in my teaching, including Arbans, Clarkes, Rubank and Jamey Aebersold.

About Charles

As far back as I can remember, music has been a central part of my life. I grew up in a musical family; my father a drummer and pianist, my mother a woodwinds player, and my brother a bassist, I have been surrounded by music as far back as I can recall.

Upon graduating from San Diego SCPA, I became interested in recording and audio engineering, eventually working as 2nd engineer at Signature Sound in Clairemont, and main engineer at Proxy Music in Oceanside. This afforded me invaluable experience working with some of San Diego's finest musicians and recording artists.

In 2008, I atten
ded Berklee College of Music on scholarship - majoring in Professional Music with an emphasis on performance and composition. In 2011, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Music.

Currently, I am an active music performer and teacher in the San Diego area. I often encourage my students to come out and see my concerts, or any other concerts of interest. I believe live music is the best source of musical inspiration!

*** Studio Equipment ***
The home studio lessons take place in a music room in the home. The room includes a drum set, keyboard, amps, guitars, bass guitars and seating is available. Parking is on the street and driveway.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide their instrument and all necessary equipment, along with their music and a quiet space for the lesson. If it is a private lesson on drums or piano at my house, I can provide the instruments.

*** Specialties ***
I have been in a number of professional playing positions, and am comfortable teaching styles such as Jazz, Rock, Latin, Classical, Show Music and more.

Charlie is exactly what I was looking for. My situation is unique but that didn't phase him. By lesson's end, I felt more like a partner in this process than a student. And that's how I operate the best, and learn the most. I'm excited. After all these years, I'm finally going to learn to play the keys!

Steve H.

Carlsbad, CA

My first instrument and the beginning of my lifetime musical education. I've played trumpet in big bands, small groups and classical orchestras. The trumpet is versatile, its exciting, and it can be fun.

About Steve

Learning to play music should be fun. Learning to play the songs you like and listen to everyday is a good first step in that direction.

As early as I can remember our house was filled with music. My parents had records of the popular music of the time as well as movie soundtrack albums. At eight years old I got my first trumpet and joined the school band. Soon I was taking private lessons. We also had a piano in the house and I often found myself sitting and trying out chords and melodies to fit the songs I would hear. At sixteen I got my first guitar, along with a songbook that promi
sed I could play “hundreds of songs with just three magic chords”.

Moving west I studied music at West Los Angeles College and played trumpet in the school’s concert band. A group of us formed a jazz quintet and started playing gigs in and around LA. We then expanded the scope of the band by adding a second sax and more exotic percussion as well as incorporating elements of reggae and rock into our original music. This helped us land jobs at clubs like the Troubadour and larger venues like the Shrine Exhibition Hall. We played together professionally for five years.

After at stint at the Dick Grove School of Music I joined an eight piece cover band playing popular dance music. We toured Western Canada for six months, riding in a converted city bus and taking turns driving a large panel truck with our equipment. When I returned I met a talented female singer who also played flute. We formed a pop/rock quintet and played professionally in the LA area for several years.

I’ve continued to take lessons along the way and have taught trumpet, piano and guitar to both young people and adults. I believe my rich musical journey and my experiences both teaching and performing can help you to achieve your musical goals!

*** Lesson Details ***
Listening to music is fun. Playing music is fun. Learning to play a musical instrument should be just as much fun. The first step toward a solid musical education is to find out what type of music the student likes and what particular musician or artist he or she enjoys. From there we can choose material that the student will have fun performing as they learn.

Each session will involve a brief review of previous material covered and a preview of ideas to work on going forward. In between, the student and I will play together and discuss how best we can each improve, and have a little fun along the way!!

I will work with a variety of methods and concepts customized to fit each student. My experience has shown me that no two students are alike, but every student will enjoy playing more, and more often, if they like the study material.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have my own instruments but would expect the student to have their own instrument for lessons and practice.

*** Specialties ***
Pop, rock, reggae, R&B, blues.

Steve is an excellent teacher

My son is 7 and taking piano lessons for the first time. I expected him to lose interest pretty quickly, but he absolutely loves it! In large part due to Steve - he is very patient and let's him learn at his own pace...no pressure. He brings songs to play that my son actually knows so he stays more engaged in interested. He really goes the extra mile to show that he cares and to keep it fun. Steve has been very easy for me to work with as well. He is always very flexible and is always on time and very professional. I would highly recommend him to anyone wanting to learn the piano.

Gary R.

San Diego, CA

I can teach any level of trumpet playing. Classical, Jazz, funk.
Beginners or advanced players. I have studied trumpet with many of the best teachers in America, including John Haynie, Bert Truax, and locally Gilbert Castellanos. The list is too long to name the all,but I have had opportunities to learn from many of the most famous players.

About Gary

Hello, my name is Gary R. and I am ready to get you started on a musical journey that should last a lifetime. Whether you are just beginning, or have been making music since you were a kid, I can help you. Beginners come in all ages, so don't think you are too old to play or sing. I enjoy teaching students of every age.
I received my Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of North Texas, a University well known for their music school and famous graduates.
My teaching methods vary from student to student, as we all learn a bit differently. I will often write custom lesson
plans for my students, as one book does not fit all. As a teacher, I enjoy a fun, relaxed learning environment designed to help you enjoy the process of becoming the best musician you can be.
I have more than 30 years experience teaching and playing music, and look forward to meeting you. Lets get started and make some music!

Gary is extremely knowledgable and a great communicator of complex musical ideas and concepts. He has a way of breaking things down into "easy to understand" bite size pieces. This allows anyone to comprehend and master the rules of music in a third of the time other teachers have taken to teach the same information. He is professional, personable and an all around great teacher .
He has taught my daughter as well. We study songwriting together.
I highly recommend Gary!
