Will M.

Kearny, NJ

Electric Bass principle at Berklee College of Music. Studied with David Buda, Lincoln Goines, Joe Santerre, Paul Del Nero, and Benny Russell.

About Will

At the age of 12, I picked up the bass guitar to start a rock band with my neighborhood friends. After years of private lessons, I got my Associate's degree in music and shipped up to Boston to earn my BA at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. During my time in college I joined a number of bands, had my music played on the radio for the first time, and even founded my own mobile recording company. I found that my best teachers were the ones who were willing to learn themselves, so I decided that my own quest for education would never be finished.

*** Lesson Details ***
I want to get
you playing music immediately! Beginning students are much more likely to stick with an instrument if they see immediate results, so I don't waste time in the first lesson forcing you to learn lots of music theory and fingering exercises. My approach to teaching uses the songs you know and love to introduce important musical concepts, so you become a well-rounded musician while having fun playing music. Remember, a musician's job is to entertain! I can get you moving with beginner to intermediate guitar lessons, or have you playing the bass on a professional level.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Dedicated music room and rehearsal and lesson space. Seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to provide an instrument and amplifier to play on, and to purchase any necessary teaching materials. I will provide my own instrument and amplifier when necessary.

*** Specialties ***
Rock, pop, funk, and all other groove-based styles. Reading music, including musical theatre scores.

Bass Guitar
From Learning To Doing

When I started taking lessons I was very much a beginner. Will helped me out. We started at the bottom working some scales and learning the fundamentals. Once I figured out some of the basics we got to do what I wanted to do, play!!! After just a few months I became comfortable playing in public and now I gig all the time. All of this thanks to Will. Thanks Will!

The boost I needed to get playing again

Will's lessons didn't only help improve my bass playing, but also gave me the confidence I needed before recording in the studio. He was patient and didn't mind working with me until I had my skills down. His lessons are more practical than others I have had with a more "classical" feel. I would recommend Will's lessons to anyone who is looking to improve their bass playing or have some fun rocking out to great tunes.

Gio A.

New York, NY

I've played guitar and bass guitar for many years and am happy to share my experience and skills with novice players. I play and enjoy all genres of music - rock, pop, jazz, hip-hop, country. You name it!

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums.

I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrume
nt takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
Guitar: Classical, jazz, American or Irish folk, rock and pop; lead or rhythm.
Drums & Percussion: All genres
Piano: Classical (includes sight reading)

Andre M.

New York, NY

Basic bass line skills. Build your bass line vocabulary. Only electric bass.

About Andre

I have been teaching guitar for more than 10 years. I do have great experience teaching kids in the New York area. Nonetheless, I have taught students with different ages (6 to 60!) and with opposite tastes and styles of music. That made me aware of the many possibilities and directions one can take. My experience taught me to adapt to the student´s goals while being able to communicate the formal methods or strategies that define the understanding of music as a whole. My goal is to ensure the student has a general sense of musicality and at the same is able to gather the right tools to learn
and play the music she/he likes.

I have a bachelor´s degree from Berklee College of Music in Guitar Performance and a Master´s Degree from New England Conservatory in Jazz Performance.

I have my own projects and collaborate with many musicians, performing mostly in NYC, but having also toured in the US, Panama, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Australia and all over Europe.

I speak fluently English, Spanish and Portuguese.

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to divide my lessons in two parts: first we address the most formal aspects of the lesson, most of the times using a method book or given hand-outs or whatever relevant material was suggested to the student; the remainder of the lesson is dedicated to work on the student´s choice of a song or anything less formal suggested by myself. This scheme for lessons might be different regarding the level and commitment of the student, but it is in general the outline I use.

There are a few books that I like to use (Alfred Guitar Method, Berklee Guitar Method, and others), because I think they are a great tool and guideline to complement my own notes. I expect the student to have a notebook with staffed paper where I can write the lesson´s summary and topics to be practiced.

I like lessons to be fun and relaxed while expecting the student to be able to perform the weekly assignments or goals.

I think, in most cases, after 6 months with me, students will be able to play basic chords for chosen songs, play several simple melodies and read a beginner/intermediate piece for guitar.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have amplifiers, music stands.

*** Travel Equipment ***
In this case I don´t provide anything other than handouts on the selected topics.

*** Specialties ***
Most of my private students are interested in Jazz, Blues, Rock or Brazilian music. But overall, I teach guitar and music according to the students musical taste, background and level.

Music Performance
An amazing teacher

I have heard about Andre M. while I leaved in Boston and have reconnected with him upon my move to NYC. I have been taking Music Performance lessons with him. As an intermediate level pianist, I can say Andre is a very dedicated teacher- he knows how to listen and can identify immediately what needs to be improved.
His knowledge of all kinds of music such as Jazz, Rock, Pop and Classical is impressive and I have recommended him to my friend who was looking for a guitar teacher. I am really happy to have found a teacher like him.

I highly recommend Andre as a professional and knowledgeable teacher.

I'm a professional bass player graduated from Berklee College of Music currently living in New York City. I came to Andre for technical support and improvement of my guitar skills as well as overall orientation to become a more complete musician and educator. I'm truly grateful I found him because I've been growing greatly as a guitar player on stage as well as a composer. He was also very helpful in guiding me for my early education classes and lesson planning. Furthermore, he is a very talented guitarist with a unique sound and that's why I chose him to play on my two children's albums. I highly recommend Andre as a professional and knowledgeable teacher.

Very talented musician and teacher

I have been taking André's lessons on jazz guitar and composition. Being admittedly not the most flexible or easy student, I am impressed at how André makes me work most efficiently, exploiting any strengths I may have and nicely/mercilessly confronting my weaknesses. Seeing him play, or "trading bars" with André, is a great motivation to keep learning toward that impossible level!

Mr. Tony

Lodi, NJ

The Basics section provides tools and exercises to help you grow as a musician. Look up and hear any scale or arpeggio, and cross-reference one with the other to see what sounds well with what. Take any of our seven interactive ear training and visual training tests to improve your ear and knowledge of the bass fretboard. Or use our theory charts to reinforce your understanding of basic music theory as it relates to the bass.

About Tony

Passionate about sharing my love of the guitar with students of all ages, I've been teaching for more than 30 years. A trained Flamenco guitarist, I found, at the tender age of 7, my passion when I heard the world-renowned Flamenco guitarist Sabicas. Studying Flamenco since then, I began, during my teens, performing professionally and have had the honor of performing with such nationally known musicians as Billy Bang (legendary fiddle player), Willy Calhoun (Living Colour), Vassar Clements Band, Tom Chapin, Stanley Jordan, Buddy Miles, and Michael Powers. In high school, I enrolled in an H
onors Musicianship class at the RiverDell, NJ, Senior High where I learned to read scores, conduct and identify multiple instruments, sight read, orchestrate scores and compose music. Following my true passion, I enrolled in the American Institute of Guitar (AIG), studying under the most sought after Flamenco guitar teacher for the past 20 years, Dennis Koster (author of Keys to Flamenco Guitar) and met the legendary Sabicas in person. At the same time, I began training in the Blues, educating myself on various styles and from various teachers, eventually going all the way to the tracks.

Tony has been teaching me for nine years and he truly believes in teaching his students not only the basics of learning the guitar but why the instrument is such a privilege to play and teaches based on the students ability. He also teaches the history and evolution of the guitar and also facts that i never knew that made me very proud to play such an instrument. He sees the potential in the student and encourages them to go beyond where they think they can go and makes it happen. Tony slowly built up motivation in me to keep exploring on my own and he planted the seed of wanting to practice to the point where playing guitar became one of the most important things in my life and i do not think another teacher could have done the same thing. I started to explore YouTube and teach myself a lot of the songs i wanted to learn starting with chords, then finger picking, then adding percussion, and finally putting all three together in many arrangements. I would never have been able to figure that out or have the motivation to if it was not for the things he taught and showed me. Now he teaches me many new techniques involving flamenco and you really cannot get all of this with someone else. Some other people I know have different teachers and i can tell by the way they talk about them and what they are learning that they do not compare to mine. I am really lucky to have ended up with someone who has such commitment and I am always super excited to keep learning what he has to teach. His knowledge is endless and it blows me away what he shows me. Tony never tries to make any of his lessons boring and he definitely has a talent not many people have. I recommend Tony, 100%.

Tony has worked as guitar accompanist for the past year and a half with our 700+ religious formation students from K-8 as well as our whole church assembly. He has played classical to contemporary Christian music with us and is fantastic. As a teacher myself, I see him as an ideal person to learn from. Tony is patient, kind, knowledgeable and tuned into kids as well as adults. You couldn't want for more in a teacher.

I strongly endorse Tony as a master pop and classical guitar teacher (as well as a dynamic, highly creative guitarist and pop/rock/folk tenor singer). I received a Master’s Degree from the Juilliard School in 1986 in voice, and he and I have worked on a weekly basis at churches and concerts since 2007. His mastery of incredibly rapid finger techniques in all major and minor scales, widely varied strum technique in so many different styles, understanding of audio production and vocal-instrumental microphone usage, as well as soulful improvised counter melodies is unmatched in my experiences. He also taught my son guitar, as well as many of my parishioners at my church, and they went on to playing frequently during church services and many other venues. His manner with children and teens is very gentle, humorous and witty, and is instantly beloved by all who meet him. Throughout my career I have rarely heard an artist who has more artistic and musical impact in concert or religious events than Mr. Tony. And the line of people wishing to meet him after concerts is so long that he does not leave events for more than 90 minutes or more. You cannot do better anywhere than having Mr. Tony as a teacher, colleague or friend.

Chris B.

Pompton Plains, NJ

Slap technique in the style of Red Hot Chili Peppers

About Chris

My name is Chris B. and I've been playing music for most of my life. I started playing guitar when I was in my early teens and, like most kids, just thought it would be cool to play in a band and have fun. Along with my brother Jon (on drums), we immediately started to jam with some neighborhood friends and quickly honed our cover song skills. We then progressed towards writing original music and eventually formed a new band. As time went on, we both started listening to more complex styles of music and spent countless hours improving upon our playing chops to match the advanced techniques
of our favorite musicians.

The best lesson I've learned is that a musician is never done learning. Once you start believing that you know everything there is to know about your instrument, or that your style of playing is superior to others, then you've stopped growing musically. Perhaps you excel in one area of your playing but need further development in another. Personally, I've also learned that I enjoy sharing my knowledge of music with others and exposing students to new techniques and musical concepts.

I strongly believe that these traits are the most important aspects of teaching music to others. No matter how advanced my playing skills might progress, I’ll always be able to relate to any type of student because I’m still learning something new everyday!
