Loretta M. Chicago, IL

Singing lessons are completely customized. Sight singing, theory, performance, pitch recognition, breathing, and posture are all elements within the preferred genre. Understanding the body and voice are also main topics.

About Loretta

I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. I then moved on to NYU. I have been teaching for over ten years now. Working with students both in person and online has been amazing. With online lessons I am able to work with students who love the convenience of being at home and in person I can show students what it is like to really grow! I love my students of all ages, and can only hope to show others how amazing music can be. I have worked with a handful of students with special needs and am comfortable teaching in a non-traditional style.

My 11-year-old absolutely loves Miss Loretta. She's enthusiastic, patient, encouraging and makes learning music fun. My daughter looks forward to her weekly lesson and learning something new. If my daughter brings a piece she wants to learn, Loretta finds a way to fit it in. It's clear that Loretta loves teaching and is a natural at it. We feel lucky to have found her.

In my last lesson, Loretta helped me work through a major misconception about myself. I did not believe that my voice sounded good in falsetto - so I didn't practice it, lowered my expectations, and generally created a self-defeating barrier..

The transformation in learning to love what's coming out of my pipes is more than just voice-deep. Now I believe there are new lands I can conquer! Thank you for helping me to love my upper register Loretta!

After only a couple of lessons I can tell that Loretta is a well rounded teacher. As a flute instructor she is better than what I could have imaged.
Jane H. Chicago, IL

My background is in classical and jazz voice, but I believe I can teach just about any genre of singing. Technic is an integral part of lessons with me!

About Jane

I am a graduate of Lawrence University with a BA in Music (Piano) and German. I've played piano for almost 20 years, but in college performed more with voice. In college as a BA candidate I was able to take a variety of lessons, including classical piano (my major), jazz piano, classical voice, and jazz voice. One of my favorite projects in college included a recital comprised of all the types of music I love playing and learning about such as a solo piano piece, a few piano duets, a piece where I sang and accompanied myself, a vocal jazz small group, and a few others. I'm currently working in a jazz trio with a guitarist and trumpeter playing (and singing) tunes from tons of different genres, such as Erykah Badu's "Window Seat", Thom Yorke's "Eraser", Incubus' "Anti-Gravity Love ...

I've been singing in choirs for over 6 years and was looking for a way to get into singing in college, and I found Serena by a lucky chance and have seen her weekly since January - not only have my vocal skills and techniques improved considerably since then, but I've become a lot more confident in singing other genres.

Serena is a fantastic teacher and is very flexible with availability - she always tries to make the lessons work on your time, and as a full-time student juggling two jobs, that was exactly what I needed. Every lesson is great - it's a healthy mixture of singing, genuine conversation, and discussion of techniques and ways to become better at something I genuinely enjoy.

I would definitely recommend her to beginners and returning singers alike - she is extremely passionate about what she does, and it really pays off when you can confidently sing a brand new piece after having worked on it for just a few lessons!

A patient and skilled instructor

I was so nervous about taking up piano again. My experience as a child had been less than stellar. Serena was exactly the instructor I had hoped for - she quickly assessed my ability and was able to adjust her teaching style/lesson accordingly. I was a bit nervous at first, but her patience helped me relax and enjoy the lesson.

We're searching for our own voice, for the greatest version of ourselves. With lifelong experience and his own personal library of exercises hardwired into his brain, Val is the perfect instructor to lead us to the promise land. His ability to dissect what is happening inside our vocal instrument is uncanny, and he packs the ability to translate this to the student effectively. Each lesson is customized to the needs of the student, and he also involves music theory when necessary to better help us understand and visualize the task at hand.

In my time spent with Val, I have seen week to week improvements both as a singer and as a song writer. I am grateful to have connected with Val as I am excelling in my craft each day and taking the steps to reach the potential he sees in me as a vocalist and musician.

I started just about 3 months ago. I'm 53 and never sang before. (Mouthed the words when the nuns made the class sing in grade school). I always thought that being a singer was an instinctive talent. Now I believe that with Val's help and guidance I can become a singer. I can feel and hear my voice developing. It will take time, but I have the confidence that it can happen based upon my progress so far.

Val is all you can ask for from a teacher. He challenges you, but still supports you as you learn. It was difficult for me to step in front of someone to sing, but Val has helped me sing more freely. I have been doing lessons for half a year and look forward to improving at each one.

excellent instructor and a wonderful person

I have been taking music lessons with Daniel since April of 2013 and it has been a great learning experience.

I had no musical background and I started learning Saxophone with Daniel and 7 months later, I am able to play popular songs that he chooses to fit best for enhancing learning curve. He does a great job with reinforcing correct habits from the very beginning and has been very encouraging and has highlighted improvement as we go from class to class. As music learning can be frustratingly slow, the feedback and reassurance he provides definitely helps in keep going back for more.

I wanted to learn guitar and piano with him as well, he encouraged to learn only Piano (for enhancing learning curve for musical theory concepts) and hold guitar for later. Which speaks about how he is genuinely concerned about your learning of music with sound reasoning. So now I take guitar and Piano lessons with him. He is very patient, polite and professional. He is great with students of all ages and easily modifies teaching style as per student needs.

Besides all that he is a great person to talk to. Numerous times we have had great discussions about things outside music.

I would highly recommend Daniel for music lessons to everyone.
