Tracy B.

Berwyn, IL

About Tracy

I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new
skill they master.

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio finished and separate from house

*** Travel Equipment ***
Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

*** Specialties ***
I use Suzuki and other books for material, but my teaching is more traditional. I use actual bowhold from start. My own invention - pinky AND thumb houses. Music reading is introduced fairly early. A little at a time and it's painless.

Daniel K.

Chicago, IL

About Daniel

Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive approach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

*** Lesson Details ***
Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Eight track recording gear; grand piano; guitars/bass (acoustic & electric); cables/amps, drum kit and percussion.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide lesson materials, and always have a metronome with me. I expect the student to have an instrument. I prefer that a student has a music stand.

*** Specialties ***
Customized approach to the individual based on needs and goals.

My 6 year old son, Zak has just started taking lessons with Jenny. She is fantastic. He looks forward to his weekly lessons and has amazed us how quickly he has progressed. Jenny is inspiring and is extremely patient and supportive. She has helped him build his confidence and rewards progress with stickers and gummy bears which really makes it fun while he is learning. She has a fantastic music library and uses age appropriate materials to inspire him. He absolutely loves going to her for lessons. I strongly recommend Jenny.

Jenny was both caring and determined when teaching my daughter the flute. My child has had some behavioral problems at school, but Jenny was patient and her lessons were engaging enough to keep her on track and learning.
Strongly recommend.

Suzanne G.

Chicago, IL

Whatever your learning curve, I expect your personal best at all times.

About Suzanne

Need a teacher who caters to your learning style? That's my specialty!

Since I hold numerous freelance jobs, I have worked under a number of odd circumstances playing a variety of styles (and even instruments!).

I have earned both a Bachelor's and Master's of Music in flute performance--both from DePaul University, and have studied and performed with many well-respected orchestral and freelance performers.

My resume and references are available upon request.

*** Lesson Details ***
I emphasize solid tone and technique as a foundation for playing, but always encourage musical
ity and finding your own voice within a piece. You'll often find me asking you "how did you feel about that performance?" in lessons, so you can begin to identify and troubleshoot your own habits for optimum improvement!

We will also cover a little bit of music theory, history (mostly flute history, but also composers and basic genres), listening, science, math--all of the varying aspects of music that we sometimes overlook.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a music stand, a CD player (for listening) and a basic keyboard (for visual music theory).

*** Travel Equipment ***
I always keep a bag or two of repertoire (for technique and sight-reading!), quick-fixes, and tricks for easy learning! It makes for a long haul, but I'm always prepared!

*** Specialties ***
Since I'm a bit of a woodwind doubler, I love taking doublers who need to brush up on flute! I'm currently studying clarinet, though I have additionally played saxophone in small productions for the past 7 years. This helps me particularly with "doubler" habits and the specifics of the necessary embouchure changes.

Suzanne is one of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of meeting in my life. In addition to being a prolific flutist herself, she knows how to teach, which is very important, especially for an adult learner like me. Her pedagogic style is extremely tailored to your level of performance and experience. I had an enjoyable and fruitful flute learning experience with her. Thank you, Suzanne!

Today was our first lesson and I could not have asked for a better first lesson. My daughter walked out comfortable and excited. My big thing is to have a plan/goals/syllabus for progress and I feel like she understands that. Only lesson 1, so we will see, but so far so good!
