Jocelyn H.

Chicago, IL

I have been acting and performing for over 10 years and have studied several different styles of acting techniques. We can work on monologues, scenes or prepare for upcoming performances and auditions.

About Jocelyn

I am currently a professional singer as well as a music teacher here in the Chicago area. While I am in Chicago the majority of the time working and performing, I do travel throughout the US and Europe for performances, which recently have included New York, Hawaii, Indiana, Toronto and Salzburg, Austria. I have studied singing privately for over 13 years in styles ranging from classical and opera, to pop, musical theater and jazz. I have also taken advanced classes on vocal pedagogy and the method behind teaching singing properly and healthily. In addition to singing, I have also studied seve
ral languages (Italian, German, French, Spanish), diction, acting/performance, music history, music theory and marketing, which all come together to create the entire package necessary when teaching and performing as a singer. I have also studied piano extensively, having played for over 20 years, and began teaching piano lessons over 10 years ago. I play the piano during the singing lessons that I teach, which is important for warm ups, learning notes and especially the opportunity to sing with live accompaniment.

*** Lesson Details ***
For me, the most important part of any music lesson is you, the student, and helping you grow and learn based one your unique interest in music.

Whether you already love singing or playing, or just want to try something new, I will make sure to find a balance of pieces that will help you grow technically as a musician, and the styles that you really enjoy or that drew you to music in the first place. Because of this, the actual curriculum of the lessons I teach will vary greatly depending on your level and what genre of singing or piano you are interested in learning.

I do expect my students to work on their assigned music over the week and to come prepared to all of their lessons because it takes a sense of curiosity and commitment towards music and practicing if you want to improve. However, if you encounter problems with a certain part of a piece that you can't get past, or something big comes up during the week, all you have to do is let me know and come with questions that we can work through together during your lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Full weighted Keyboard, in the studio room with seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect students to have a piano or full keyboard if I am going to travel to their house.

Abigail loves her lessons; I suggested to her that she let you know she has a personal cordless microphone & amplifier. I thought the usage of microphone would be cool to use. Of course, this was only a suggestion, what do you think?

Wendy P.

Chicago, IL

Acting students will receive instruction customized for their individual needs and skill level, drawing on a variety of techniques, including Linklater (physical and vocal work), Stanislavski, Meisner, and Grotowski, Shurtleff, among others. Students can work privately on audition skills, including monologues and cold reading, as well as scene work, character building and basic principles of acting. The first step to great acting is a free body and voice, allowing full expression of of emotional life of the character!

About Wendy

I am a professional singer, songwriter and actor working in the Chicago area for many years. I have a B.F.A. in Theater/Voice from The University of Kansas and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College Chicago. I've been teaching private vocal instruction since 2003: I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, a unique and supportive venue for singer's to become more comfortable performing before an audience. I also instruct workshops for vocal technique and performance. For the past 10 years I was the lead singer for The Red Apples, an acoustic roots band that performs an eclectic mix
of rock, swing, blues, country and jazz. I also have a cabaret/art song project consisting or original material with composer Jaroslaw Golembiowski. As a singer and actress I have performed with many major theaters in the Chicago area, including Court Theater, Victory Gardens, National Jewish Theater, Bailiwick Theater, and Prop Theater.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a classically trained singer I will instruct you in all aspects of singing technique, from breath control and support to improving your tone, range, flexibility and resonance. My familiarity with a variety of musical styles from pop/rock, R&B, and country, to musical theater, lounge and jazz makes me an ideal teacher for those interested in contemporary styles.

I have spent many years developing my own style of singing and instruction. I draw on my experiences and training not only in music, but theater and movement, (Linklater, Alexander Technique, Grotowski) to create a well rounded approach to singing and performing. As an instructor, I am most interested in helping students find their true voice and artistic style. I teach students to find expression through and with a foundation of technique, rather then in spite of it. I also am very interested in helping students deal with the mental/emotional aspects of performance, an all important area so frequently ignored by music teachers. My style is nurturing, yet disciplined, and sprinkled liberally with good-natured humor."

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio space is fully equipped with a piano, P.A. system with microphones, CD, MP3 player for tracks, and ability to record lessons if the student desires.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Please have a piano (in tune!) or keyboard for use in your in home lessons.

*** Specialties ***
I am classically trained, but I am very adept at teaching music in a wide variety of styles, including most contemporary styles of music including pop/rock, roots, swing, jazz and blues, country, r&b, and of course musical theater and cabaret. My band performs an eclectic mix of originals and covers in the roots rock genre, and I write music as well. I have many years of experience in the theater as an actress, and I coach acting technique and performance. I coach singer/songwriters, and all types of singers, of all ages. I have a workshop that specializes in helping people learn to perform better in front of an audience, and I host the Singer's Salon in Chicago, which is a supportive opportunity to perform regularly! I also coach bands, to improve their vocals, harmonies, etc.

Wendy has been giving voice lessons to my 12-year-old daughter for 6 months, so I asked her what kind of review she should get. The answer was quick: "Five stars!" Why? "Because she's fun, and she has helped me identify and work on the skills I need, and helped me improve where I'm okay, but could be better."

From my point of view, Wendy has done all those things. My daughter loves to sing, and Wendy is increasing her skills and her confidence. She looks forward to her weekly lessons; never a complaint. Five stars.

In Chicago, her credits include: The Two
Gentlemen of Verona, The Comedy of Errors, Macbeth, Jersey Shore: The Musical, Jack and the Beanstalk, Theatre of Women 6, Pirates of Penzance, Change the Night Owl, and two solo cabarets: "Should I Be Sweet?" and "I Don't Want To Be a Cliche."

*** Lesson Details ***
I have a very good balance in my lessons of nurturing the student, but also pushing the student to his or her highest potential. I always remain encouraging and supportive. I spend about a third of the lesson on technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. You will get excellent vocal and piano technique from me, but you will also learn to have fun and appreciate the ease and relaxation of singing and playing piano.

*** Studio Equipment ***
F/w keyboard, seating for parents - main room

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in musical theater singing, especially preparation for any auditions (singing or acting) for shows, college auditions, etc. Musical theater is my main passion, but I also focus a lot on pop music. I am especially experienced in introducing newbies to singing or piano.

I've been singing in choirs for over 6 years and was looking for a way to get into singing in college, and I found Serena by a lucky chance and have seen her weekly since January - not only have my vocal skills and techniques improved considerably since then, but I've become a lot more confident in singing other genres.

Serena is a fantastic teacher and is very flexible with availability - she always tries to make the lessons work on your time, and as a full-time student juggling two jobs, that was exactly what I needed. Every lesson is great - it's a healthy mixture of singing, genuine conversation, and discussion of techniques and ways to become better at something I genuinely enjoy.

I would definitely recommend her to beginners and returning singers alike - she is extremely passionate about what she does, and it really pays off when you can confidently sing a brand new piece after having worked on it for just a few lessons!

A patient and skilled instructor

I was so nervous about taking up piano again. My experience as a child had been less than stellar. Serena was exactly the instructor I had hoped for - she quickly assessed my ability and was able to adjust her teaching style/lesson accordingly. I was a bit nervous at first, but her patience helped me relax and enjoy the lesson.

Benjamin K.

Chicago, IL

I have been involved in several productions, and have extensive acting experience. I am able to help my students study their characters, and realize a wide range of acting choices.

About Benjamin

My expansive breadth of interests has led me through years of experience in the arts and natural sciences. I'm a voice instructor, math tutor, and biology teacher. Now, I'm pursuing a career in opera and vocal performance.

I have extensively studied vocal performance and opera for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have been in many operas and musical theater productions. I am currently enrolled as a second year masters student at the Chicago College of Performing Arts studying vocal performance. I have studied other vocal genres, such as jazz, rock, and pop. I have prev
iously taught at The School of Rock in Indianapolis Indiana. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. Several of my students have recored albums and are currently performing all over the U.S. I use the appoggio technique of breathing and believe all singing should be produced in a way that does not damage the vocal folds.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectations that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique form day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I teach an open throat technique called appoggio. It is the technique opera singers use, but can be applied to any music style. This technique allows the singer to sing with their entire voice using a relaxed larynx. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer'€™s voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.

During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. My main goal for every tutoring session is student learning and comprehension.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, recording equipment, large collection of sheet music, subscription to IPA source (foreign language translations and pronunciations), several math and science textbooks

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping students find their true singing voice.

Benjamin is my second instructor I have had on TakeLessons, I stopped with the first when I did not think it would be a good fit. I have only had two lessons and I can already see that Benjamin has high attention to detail and is very skilled. I want someone to teach me the fundamentals, point out my bad habits and teach me methods to correct them - no compromises. I am confident that Benjamin will get me on the right track and intend to continue on with him.

Benjamin has improved my vocals beyond words. Within the first 2 months I increased my range by an octave more on my chest and head voice, dramatically increased my control, and learned how to sing with much less stress and tension then before. His teaching approach deals with logic and anatomy which resonates more to me then memorizing a million stupid little tricks like with my old teachers. I have Benjamin to thank for my dramatic increase in vocal sound and confidence. I will continue to take lessons with him until i run out of money!
