Kevin B.

Wilton, CA

I have sung my entire life. Beginning in church, I sang and even wrote songs at the age of 4. Though voice is not my main instrument, I have taught, tutored/coached, and directed voice students and choirs for over 7 years.

About Kevin

Hello everyone! My name is Kevin and I am a pianist, vocalist, and instrument connoisseur. I have been playing the piano since I was 10 and taught myself how to play by ear. Growing up in a church environment I first taught myself gospel and later jazz. I personally love jazz, and this is one of my areas of strength. It wasn't until I was about 16 years old, while attending my first college, that I started exploring music in depth and as a potential career. As I started to delve deeper, I began to compose and have had some ensemble groups perform my pieces. I have arranged pieces for ch
oirs and accompanied them as well. I also play guitar and bass guitar. As a well rounded musician I can teach you how to play the piano, how to learn music theory, how to compose and the beginning levels of guitar and voice.

I've been teaching and tutoring music students for about 5 years now. I've always loved and enjoyed music, and want to share that same joy through teaching. I started teaching by tutoring my peers in college and realized how rewarding it is. I then started to include students of all ages while continuing my education. I have a knack for music theory as well, this is typically a challenging area for most people, and I find it extremely important for a growing musician. I've been teaching choirs and bands in multiple school districts over the past 2 years, and I love working with children especially. I have conducted my community college choirs, along with their concert band, and orchestra. My true passion lies in conducting as I am a classical pianist with an ultimate goal as a conductor in my future.

I am currently attending college to obtain a bachelor's degree in music, with my emphasis on collaborative piano, conducting, and composition. I have been taught from coast to coast, while gathering much more in between. I previously attended Bard College at Simons Rock (Great Barrington, Massachusetts) at the Age of 15, then moved back to California at the age of 17. I currently attend Cosumnes River College and have plans to transfer this fall to a major four year university to complete my bachelors degree. Presently, I work for the Sacramento Unified School District as a Piano Teacher and Choir Accompanist.

*** Lesson Details ***
In first meeting with a student I like to establish realistic short term goals, along with an overall goal in mind. Say nothing and teaching them everything. I like to promote a learning style of self-found knowledge. The best way to make something stick, is to discover it yourself. I like to see the "light bulb" effect in my students. Children seem to learn best when a lesson plan is catered to them, and when teaching is shown physically. Adolescence and adults tend to learn from a more technical stand point, with the emphasis on "how it works." My goal is to fuel a students thirst for the instrument and music as a whole. Depending on the student, and their goals, we can have a lesson ranging from really fun and easy going lesson to something a bit stricter that will keep up their progression and focus. I am a very patient person and have experience with ALL ages and ALL types of people.

I use a lot of different materials during lessons. Typically each of my students will have about 2 books at a time, one for the instrument and technique, and the other for theory. Though I love to cover many bases and provide the most knowledge to each of my students, it is also a priority to make sure that the knowledge is affordable. For that reason, I try to stick with more commonly used, easily accessible, and affordable books from publishers like Hal Leonard, Alfred, and G. Schirmer.

Within 2 or 3 months my students can look forward to having clear knowledge in the basics of their instrument(s) along with the theory behind the music. I will continue to keep an open line of communication with my students to ensure that I am meeting their goals, encourage questions, and ensuring their progress forward.

JoAnn R.

Carmichael, CA

I am a serious singing teacher and coach (as well as a performer). If you attend your lessons and practice regularly, I will help you learn to sing very well. I thoroughly understand how to use your body to sing well and I have developed many way to communicate it to you. This means you will learn to manage the following elements of singing: even tone, breath management, on pitch, a well focused voice, and clean pronunciation.

I teach you how to sing with technical competence and to develop awareness of the sensations that provide you feedback necessary to sing musically and convey emotion.

As part of your studies you will master the elements of style that define the genres of music that interest you, including pop, rock, jazz, Broadway and classical singing. Elements like rhythm, harmony, articulation, pronunciation and tone quality and color.

About JoAnn

Your lessons are designed to help you develop the skills and confidence you need to successfully perform in public. I work hard to prepare your lessons and I ask my students to invest daily time working on skills studied at their lessons. Performing music requires the patient integration of multiple skills over time, however, the rewards are BIG.

I continually update my teaching methods by attending workshops and master classes and I incorporate my knowledge of human anatomy and function, to help you perform with minimal strain. Also, I incorporate internet resources in your lessons t
o keep them interesting and up to date.

What will your lessons be like?
At your first lesson we will explore and name the parts of your instrument (voice or cello). We'll talk about what you would like to learn, set attainable goals and select songs that you will be successful learning.

In subsequent lessons you will warm up with scales and exercises, using common intervals with basic rhythms to improve your technical abilities and gain musical skills and knowledge, such as hearing pitches and intervals and keeping with the beat. This will also help you learn to read music.

Singers will learn to use breathing to coordinate with your vocal folds to make a beautiful tone and sing on pitch, relax your throat and tongue to create resonant chambers, shape your mouth and tongue to color the tone, and use your tongue and lips to form the words.

Cellists will learn to transfer your body weight into your cello to produce a mellow tone, placing your hands and arms on the cello and bow in a relaxed and balanced manner to allow you to play smoothly and in tune and to prepare you to produce a lovely vibrato. Since cellos don'™t have frets, you will also learn to locate each note on the cello but just a few notes at a time - until you know them all.

You will learn to use your technical skills and knowledge to create musical phrases that sound beautiful and authentic and are fun to perform and listen to. You will need to practice simple skills and phrases repeatedly until they become habit. I will lend you my kind and patient support to help you through the bumps in the road.

Not sure how to practice at home?
To support your practice at home you will: Receive a recording of each lesson to practice with; Learn simple exercises you can do at home; Learn to create and use simple backup tracks of your songs to learn to hear rhythm and harmony; Learn how to use your computer at home to get feedback for pitch, and tone quality.

Nervous about performing?
When you are comfortable you will have three opportunities per year to perform in student programs performing for friends and families.

You will have opportunities to participate and perform in workshops which include performance opportunities, lectures, demonstrations and Master Classes with nationally recognized teachers and performers. And students can earn Certificate of Merit which are recognized by universities.

Sarah N.

Elk Grove, CA

About Sarah

I received my BA in music from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. While the school is not well known for music, the program stressed being as well rounded in as possible with a "Learn by doing" attitude permeating every class. I believe that this attitude is essential to all musicians, regardless of what style they are interested in. No matter if you wish to sing pop or opera, the basics are the same. I emphasize singing in a healthy manner and taking care of your voice. I also believe that most people are capable of singing well.
I have been involved in several Opera scene performances, most n
otably performing the role of Lucia in the Mad Scene from "Lucia di Lammermoor" and the Marschallin in the finale of "Der Rosenkavalier." With this background, I can help my students learn how to sing in other languages as well as help them with performance practice, proper posture, basic music reading, and giving them access to resources for more learning opportunities.
I prefer to teach beginning to intermediate students. My ultimate goal is to help my students love music as much as I do and to find the voice that is hidden in them.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will be separated into three main categories:

1. Warm-ups
This will ready your voice to sing and help prevent damage to your vocal chords
2. Practice
At this point, you will be singing through the piece we have chosen for you to work on. This will take up
the bulk of the lesson.
3. Questions and paperwork
The paperwork will simply be assignment sheets and any other photocopies I feel will help you become a better musician.

You will need a recording device of some sort so that you can listen to the lesson during the week. This will help you remember the warm-ups and the suggestions given for proper vocal production. If this is a problem, please mention it and we will figure it out.

Sheet music will be needed for any song you wish to practice in lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the living room, keyboard, music stand

*** Specialties ***
I was trained in classical voice, including opera, but I also am trained in pop and a little in musical theater.

Amazing Teacher. Kind, Caring, and Witty :)

I took lessons with Sarah for a couple month before moving to another city, and I wish I could have taken her with me! I'm a beginner singer that loves singing all generes, but really believed I was a hopeless cause when it came to singing. Sarah worked one on one with me to teach me proper breathing and exercises in order to keep my voice healthy and within a couple weeks I already saw improvement. She was patient to work out the bad habits I had picked up before I started taking lessons. I highly recommend Sarah. My voice and I thank her :)

Esther B.

Sacramento, CA

Alexandria Technique, Vocal Performance, Solfege Skill, Vocal Structure:vowel structure, appoggiatura, how to developing for the abdominal muscles properly etc...

About Esther

I'm Esther, a very enthusiastic musician. I started out teaching myself piano and singing in a choir at the age of 9. I moved to the U.S. in 1992 and studied music for 10 years receiving my B.M. & M.A. in music at California State University of Sacramento. I studied and trained with Claudia Kitka & Jackie Victorino for voice and Kirsten Smith, Joan McDe, & Angel Mamn for piano. I have performed many solo concerts in the U.S. as well as South Korea.

I find a student's strengths and weaknesses using various ways to encourage each student. I am very patient, kind, flexible, and enthusiastic
and I love working with children as much as adults. I strongly support basic skills: sight-reading, pitch and tone.

I have 30 years experience teaching kids and adults private piano and 6 yrs voice coaching (early period to contemporary). I speak fluent Korean and English.

*** Lesson Details ***
My objectives: to help students powerfully communicate through the essence of music and aid the development of children and adults by finding their strengths and weaknesses and to develop their skills and show their musical talents. I emphasize basic skills, good sight-reading, and Solfege skills (Do-Re-Me...etc), vocal technique, vocal performance, and Alexandria technique. Students participate in their own recital and show their musical talents.

Lessons are held at either your home, or mine using composers from various time periods that speaks to the individual student.
Also,I do prefer to work a weekly student.
A beginner lesson may be 10-15 min. for warm-ups and scales, 10-15 min. theory and 10 min. playtime. In three to six months the student will be able to read sheet music and should be able to perform simple songs.

An intermediate lesson is longer, 45-50 min., with more focus on music from a specific chosen time-period. A specialty is preparation for voice and piano auditions for entering college.

I enjoy teaching children from age 5 up to adults. I also can teach beginner oboe and beginner guitar.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, electronic keyboard, guitar, oboe

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar

*** Specialties ***
I teach the basic skills very strongly, and also encourage students and, challenge them, as well.
I also have new techniques for teaching voice and piano.
I do prefer to teach a weekly lesson.
