Curtis L.

Sacramento, CA

All ages and levels are welcomed! For my beginner students I take things very slow and help them learn about rhythm and melody. As we progress on the guitar I like to encourage the learning of the CAGED system. For more advanced students we will get into theory and harmony along with improvisation.

About Curtis

I'm a friendly and patient person who strives to be really encouraging towards the student's education. I believe a good teacher will make a huge difference in the learning process. I was born and raised in Northern California. I first began studying guitar with Musicians Institute alumni Scott Allen. After three years of private lessons, I attended and completed my training from Musicians Institute(G.I.T) with a certificate in guitar performance. At the Musicians Institute, I was instructed by Keith Wyatt, Ernesto Homeyer, Scott Parker, Al Bonhomme, Greg Harrison and Daniel Gilbert (just t
o name a few). Along with learning the standard curriculum of Musicians Institute, I performed in many styles such as Blues, R&B, Pop, Rock, and Metal.

Kevin B.

Wilton, CA

I have played and taught Guitar for 5 years and I love to teach students how to play guitar.

About Kevin

Hello everyone! My name is Kevin and I am a pianist, vocalist, and instrument connoisseur. I have been playing the piano since I was 10 and taught myself how to play by ear. Growing up in a church environment I first taught myself gospel and later jazz. I personally love jazz, and this is one of my areas of strength. It wasn't until I was about 16 years old, while attending my first college, that I started exploring music in depth and as a potential career. As I started to delve deeper, I began to compose and have had some ensemble groups perform my pieces. I have arranged pieces for ch
oirs and accompanied them as well. I also play guitar and bass guitar. As a well rounded musician I can teach you how to play the piano, how to learn music theory, how to compose and the beginning levels of guitar and voice.

I've been teaching and tutoring music students for about 5 years now. I've always loved and enjoyed music, and want to share that same joy through teaching. I started teaching by tutoring my peers in college and realized how rewarding it is. I then started to include students of all ages while continuing my education. I have a knack for music theory as well, this is typically a challenging area for most people, and I find it extremely important for a growing musician. I've been teaching choirs and bands in multiple school districts over the past 2 years, and I love working with children especially. I have conducted my community college choirs, along with their concert band, and orchestra. My true passion lies in conducting as I am a classical pianist with an ultimate goal as a conductor in my future.

I am currently attending college to obtain a bachelor's degree in music, with my emphasis on collaborative piano, conducting, and composition. I have been taught from coast to coast, while gathering much more in between. I previously attended Bard College at Simons Rock (Great Barrington, Massachusetts) at the Age of 15, then moved back to California at the age of 17. I currently attend Cosumnes River College and have plans to transfer this fall to a major four year university to complete my bachelors degree. Presently, I work for the Sacramento Unified School District as a Piano Teacher and Choir Accompanist.

*** Lesson Details ***
In first meeting with a student I like to establish realistic short term goals, along with an overall goal in mind. Say nothing and teaching them everything. I like to promote a learning style of self-found knowledge. The best way to make something stick, is to discover it yourself. I like to see the "light bulb" effect in my students. Children seem to learn best when a lesson plan is catered to them, and when teaching is shown physically. Adolescence and adults tend to learn from a more technical stand point, with the emphasis on "how it works." My goal is to fuel a students thirst for the instrument and music as a whole. Depending on the student, and their goals, we can have a lesson ranging from really fun and easy going lesson to something a bit stricter that will keep up their progression and focus. I am a very patient person and have experience with ALL ages and ALL types of people.

I use a lot of different materials during lessons. Typically each of my students will have about 2 books at a time, one for the instrument and technique, and the other for theory. Though I love to cover many bases and provide the most knowledge to each of my students, it is also a priority to make sure that the knowledge is affordable. For that reason, I try to stick with more commonly used, easily accessible, and affordable books from publishers like Hal Leonard, Alfred, and G. Schirmer.

Within 2 or 3 months my students can look forward to having clear knowledge in the basics of their instrument(s) along with the theory behind the music. I will continue to keep an open line of communication with my students to ensure that I am meeting their goals, encourage questions, and ensuring their progress forward.

excellent ability to work with the student

You will enjoy taking lessons with Kevin, because he adapts very well to your skill level and is very intuitive as to whether you 'get' what's being discussed. He is patient as well, just like he says.

Esther B.

Sacramento, CA

I have been teaching the guitar 8 years. I'm building a strong foundation of techniques.I specialize in Blues, classical &typically use MelBay books and also have the following to use the Sheet music.
In addition,I emphasize how to read a good sight reading.

About Esther

I'm Esther, a very enthusiastic musician. I started out teaching myself piano and singing in a choir at the age of 9. I moved to the U.S. in 1992 and studied music for 10 years receiving my B.M. & M.A. in music at California State University of Sacramento. I studied and trained with Claudia Kitka & Jackie Victorino for voice and Kirsten Smith, Joan McDe, & Angel Mamn for piano. I have performed many solo concerts in the U.S. as well as South Korea.

I find a student's strengths and weaknesses using various ways to encourage each student. I am very patient, kind, flexible, and enthusiastic
and I love working with children as much as adults. I strongly support basic skills: sight-reading, pitch and tone.

I have 30 years experience teaching kids and adults private piano and 6 yrs voice coaching (early period to contemporary). I speak fluent Korean and English.

*** Lesson Details ***
My objectives: to help students powerfully communicate through the essence of music and aid the development of children and adults by finding their strengths and weaknesses and to develop their skills and show their musical talents. I emphasize basic skills, good sight-reading, and Solfege skills (Do-Re-Me...etc), vocal technique, vocal performance, and Alexandria technique. Students participate in their own recital and show their musical talents.

Lessons are held at either your home, or mine using composers from various time periods that speaks to the individual student.
Also,I do prefer to work a weekly student.
A beginner lesson may be 10-15 min. for warm-ups and scales, 10-15 min. theory and 10 min. playtime. In three to six months the student will be able to read sheet music and should be able to perform simple songs.

An intermediate lesson is longer, 45-50 min., with more focus on music from a specific chosen time-period. A specialty is preparation for voice and piano auditions for entering college.

I enjoy teaching children from age 5 up to adults. I also can teach beginner oboe and beginner guitar.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, electronic keyboard, guitar, oboe

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar

*** Specialties ***
I teach the basic skills very strongly, and also encourage students and, challenge them, as well.
I also have new techniques for teaching voice and piano.
I do prefer to teach a weekly lesson.

Loren R.

Elk Grove, CA

Riffs, reading music, tabs, songs, chords, performance opportunities... it's all here. From country, pop, blues, classical, jazz... everything from the ground up. Acoustic styles. Electric. It's all here!

About Loren

Loren is a well-known music instructor and has been teaching private music lessons in the Elk Grove area since 2002. He has been teaching for years and years, has two music degrees and is an active performer in many styles, enjoying a steady gigging schedule in the Sacramento area. He's "the real deal."

*** Lesson Details ***
The lessons are of the highest quality available as the student learns to read music, is guided in music theory with ear training, technique, and performance, however performance remains optional. There are options.

We often begin with songs that the student alre
ady likes. Sometimes that's the ticket. From Bach to the Beatles, Taylor Swift to Bob Dylan, there are always great entrance points.

Theory, (chords, intervals, scales, cadences, etc.) Reading music, (tabs, traditional music notation, charts), Technique, (right and left hand patterns), it's all covered. It's fun and legitimate education.

*** Specialties ***
Lessons in piano or guitar cover all popular music styles including country, rock, and classical.

Loren is the best

My son is 5 he is really enjoying his time each week with Loren. Loren lets Brandon have fun but keeps him on line with what Loren would like to do that night. It has been ruff finding a consistent practice time but Loren arrives each week and keeps plugging along with Brandon. Brandon looks forward to the time with Loren and is also enjoying learning piano. my wife and I feel fortunate that Loren is part of our sons learning experience.

Zach G.

Sacramento, CA

We'll study whatever it is that you would like to study. I have a lot of experience in the basic methodology of learning guitar. Beyond that, my skills range from folk accompaniment to jazz improvisation to complicated singing/playing combinations. This is my most flexible area of teaching, so pretty much anything is possible!

About Zach

My musical training began in the San Juan School District: first at Arden Middle School, and continuing throughout my 4 years at Rio Americano High School. Beyond providing musical discipline and opportunities, their band programs were amazing communities, wherein those with experience were expected to impart their knowledge to others. It was because of this that I began taking teaching seriously. My primary skill sets concern music, though over the last 5 years, I've been branching out to include design software, film production, and computer programming. My 'curriculum' is based around h
oning the tools for artistic self-sufficiency, and I customize that to whatever the student needs. I'm excited to work with you!
