Donato M.

Los Angeles, CA

About Donato

It's a common misconception people have that when they take music lessons, they will end up with an awkward teacher who spends more time showing off than teaching them anything. This is actually true, but that's where I stand out. In addition to being an excellent instructor with 10 years experience at professional music schools, I am relevant. I keep up with new music, so you are guaranteed to learn more songs than Stairway to Heaven. I play in local bands, music is my life, and I love teaching it to anyone with the desire to learn.

*** Lesson Details ***
While I teach guitar, drums, p
iano, and bass, from beginner to professional levels, and I have tons of experience in songwriting, recording, social media, Protools, Logic, and Garageband, guitar is my forté. I've been playing for 20 years, and can teach all genres from blues to classical to jazz to rock. I'm also well versed in music theory, harmony, sight reading, ear training, creativity strengthening, chord theory, and chord melody, if you want to learn the technical stuff.

*** Studio Equipment ***
-88 key piano
-Electric and Acoustic guitars
-Bass guitars
-5 Piece Drum Set
-iPad and Akai synth station
-P.A. System and 8 Chanel mixing board
-iMac w/Protools, Logic and Garageband
-Microphones and Music stands
-Guitar, Bass and Keyboard amplifiers
-Extensive music and music theory library
-Bongos, Tambourines other hand percussion instruments

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would bring the curriculum and whatever else was needed depending on the lesson ie: music stand, extra staff paper, tuner etc.
Students would just need their own instrument and a note book.

Excellent teacher for all ages!

Not every talented musician can be a good teacher. Donato is both. He is a professional musician who has a deep understanding of his instrument, music theory and songwriting. He is also an encouraging teacher who listens and connects well with his students and makes learning fun--playing music should be!

I started taking acoustic guitar lessons with Donato just before I turned 40--it was something I always wanted to do. With no previous experience, I knew it would be a challenge, but he proved that you can teach an old dog new tricks! I told him I wanted to play music that I love and can sing along to, and that is what he taught me to do.

Donato always adapted to my ability level, personal goals and preferred style of music. His encouragement gave me the confidence to learn something new and even play in front of friends and family. Childhood piano teachers instilled a sense of perfectionism which inevitably led to feelings of failure. Conversely, Donato helped me find the fun in making music, playing through mistakes in stride and singing aloud with joy. What a gift!

I highly recommend Donato for students of any age and any level. He has the experience and talent to hone the skills of advanced students and the adaptability and patience to draw out the skills of beginning students, all the while sharing his passion and enjoyment of playing music.

Donato is a terrific guitar teacher!

I took lessons from Donato for about 3 years. He was a great guitar teacher - both electric and acoustic. Not only did he teach me the songs I wanted to learn, but he also taught me the fundamentals of guitar. He has an extensive knowledge of music theory and can easily communicate that to his students. Donato was always enthusiastic and supportive, and he made taking guitar lessons fun and interesting. He also plays drums, so sometimes he would accompany me on the drums while I played guitar, which was always cool. Any student, whether beginner or advanced would benefit from taking lessons from Donato.

Bass Guitar
terrific teacher!

Donato is a great teacher and a wonderfully talented and musical person. He's taught me bass and drums, and is knowledgeable about so many genres and styles of music, and adept at basically every instrument.

He has an amazing ear; he can listen to any piece of music and immediately identify and play the melody, harmony, and rhythms, no matter how complex. He is a terrific communicator and extremely patient and encouraging as a teacher.

He's also a fantastic singer/songwriter/performer -- you should take any opportunity to hear him live -- you will definitely be inspired. I recommend Donato wholeheartedly!

Anthony S.

Los Angeles, CA

I'm very passionate about performance and really love to get into the character of music. I believe that if you really internalize what you're saying, the technique will shine through.

About Anthony

I started playing music at age 9, when my mom decided to put me in piano lessons. Much to her surprise, I fell in love with the instrument and played non-stop, sometimes skipping dinner to read through a new piece or practice for an up coming competition. After winning a few state wide competitions, I enrolled in an arts high school to practice my craft, and be around other creative high school students.

While in High School, I started writing music and singing in a 16 member chamber choir. The summer before my senior year, I won the prestigious Berklee songwriting competition and was awar
ded a scholarship to the school, which I decided to decline to make my way towards the music mecca of Los Angeles.

I received a Bachelor's degree from CalArts where I focused on contemporary piano/voice and composition.

Since graduating in 2010, I've released an EP entitled 'Living in Layers'. I sing and play piano in a number of bands including cover bands and original projects, mostly in the pop/rock/soul veins. Some of my collaborators include Akon and Andy Samberg (for an SNL short), Ben Lee (platinum selling Australian recording artist), Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons), and the Swingle Singers (Acclaimed British A Capella group).

I have love in my heart for both classical and popular music, and I think my combination of the 2 will make for a very well-rounded lesson experience. I would say that my biggest strength as a musician is that I'm well rounded, and can work with just about anyone in any style. I can help you understand the styles that excite you, but also open your eyes to other new and exciting things. I would say that I specialize in writing, and work very well with students interested in composition and songwriting.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons with me will vary from student to student, but you can definitely expect exercises to better your technique, games for your ear to help you understand whats happening in the music, and a project of your choosing, whether it be a pop song, a Mozart Aria, or a Jazz Standard.

First and foremost, taking music lessons should be fun and inspiring. You can count on me to figure out just what it is that made you pick up the phone and ask for lessons, and then together, we'll create feasible step by step ways to reach your goals. I am a pretty easy-going teacher, but I like to challenge my students and push them to a level that they are comfortable with.

For beginning piano students, I like to use the Faber and Faber Method, which comes with escalating books in Performance, Theory, and Technique and Artistry. It just covers it all! For advanced piano students, I like to asses their strengths and weaknesses and design a curriculum with the student that's both fun and challenging, sometimes working out of specific books, and sometimes not.

For voice students of all skill levels, I like to base my curriculum off of a balance of technique-building exercises and stylistic song of the students choice. A classical singer may have different exercises with vowels, placement, and breath than a pop or rock student. I like to focus on the 'true' voice, find what makes you sound like you, and make you the best and most confident singer you can possibly be.

After 6 months of lessons with me, I will have you saying that you are not only a better musician, but you understand music more and you're more inspired and excited than before. Music is what unites us as people, and I strive to give the tools necessary to all of my students to be able to express themselves in a way that works for them.

*** Studio Equipment ***
LivingRoom: piano and/or keyboard (88-weighted key) couches and chairs, parents can sit on on lesson

*** Travel Equipment ***
If the students don't have a piano or keyboard (88-weighted key) then I can provide a keyboard for the lesson.

*** Specialties ***
Piano: beg - adv
Vocals: beg - adv

I am capable of teaching classical piano lessons, but I specialize in contemporary and popular piano styles and composition/songwriting.

I love working with vocalists looking to accompany themselves better!

Awesome Anthony

I've been taking singing classes with Anthony for over half a year now, singing musical theatre. He has been very accommodating with my busy schedule. Anthony is awesome, not only in his teaching style, but his genuine interest in teaching. He is also an amazing singer!

I have classes with him once a week, and I look forward to every class. He's very positive and nurturing. I came in with zero experience, and was very shy about my voice. He has helped bring my confidence level up. Though my singing ability is still shaky, I feel myself improving, and I'm now willing to belt out my favorite songs in a car with my friends.

knowledgeable, dynamic, passionate, great musicianship, articulate, carrying, flexible, reliable

Anthony has been teaching our two teenage kids for the past 6 months. They are intermediate level and have both found in Anthony a great balance. He is capable to go from classical, emphasizing on techniques and theory, to Jazz and expose them to the intricacy of chords, to pop and sing with them. He is giving them his full array of knowledge in the most gentle, encouraging yet challenging way. And instills in them the notion of phrasing and composition by guiding them to think musically. He is wonderful with them.

Kara M.

Los Angeles, CA

About Kara

From childhood I considered myself to be a singer and entertainer. Feeling called to a career in music, I began my undergraduate studies in piano and voice performance at the Wheaton College Conservatory near Chicago, Illinois. I then spent two years in France studying voice at the Conservatoire de Nancy and was awarded the Médaille d’Or in 2004. I then returned to the United States to pursue my singing career. In 2005, I had the honor of being selected to join the Maryland Opera Studio at the University of Maryland. As a member of this prestigious opera program, I performed the roles of Soph
ie in Massenet's "Werther", Anne Sexton in Conrad Susa's "Transformations" and Rose in the World Premiere of John Musto’s "Later the Same Evening." My love of new music has lead me to collaborate with Opera Lafayette of Washington DC and with Chantry, one of Washington's leading Renaissance vocal ensembles. I have also performed new music with Washington D.C.’s Great Noise Ensemble, the Alliance for New Music Theater and the Aspen Music Festival. Soon after completing my masters degree, I began to pursue the comedic performing I had so loved as a child. I launched a comedic youtube series and began creating independent short films. In August of 2012, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my singing and comedic performing in the film and television industry.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am committed to creating a positive, uplifting, encouraging environment in which my students can flourish. I provide each student with a strong foundation in musical theory and technique. Considering each student's musical preference, I chose repertoire that is both inspiring and challenging, so that each student can achieve steady progress through music they love.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect my students to provide a piano and the books I assign them.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in opera, early music and musical theater.

Wonderful!

Kara has been my piano/voice teacher for the past few years.
She is an absolutely wonderful teacher. She is always encouraging, and her advice has always helped me immensely to perform better. Thanks to her, I won a place in the All State Chorus, and also parts in the school musical productions. She is always warm and friendly, has a fantastic sense of humor, so it was always a joy working with her. You cannot ask for a better teacher.

I had the distinct pleasure of studying voice with Ms. Kara Morgan over the past five years. Prior to starting with her, I had not sung for a long period of time and it had been even longer since I studied voice. With her knowledge of the human voice and her ability to communicate vocal concepts, my vocal ability has exceeded my expectations. With Kara’s leadership and training, I have gained skill and confidence and I am now singing regularly as a choir member and a soloist. Diane Archer

Crystal S.

Los Angeles, CA

Performance coaching is available in piano and voice.

About Crystal

Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.

Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she
was able to contribute. She went on to study classical voice, piano and music theory at The Boston Conservatory of Music. After concluding her studies in London, she returned home and began working regularly as a theater performer, appearing in twenty world premiers and re-imagined classics. Most notably she played the lead role of Keely Smith in the big band jazz musical “Louis and Keely: Live At The Sahara” during its eight-month run at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse. She also formed her own rock band, The Honeysuckle Jones Revival, with whom she performed her own songs all over Los Angeles. And she began working as a studio session vocalist, providing demo vocals for other songwriters, as well as arranging and performing back-up vocals for original artists, including Laura Roppe (currently in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Uncharted list of emerging artists.) Crystal played the lead role of Brooke in the new operatic rock musical “The Burning Opera LA” during its Los Angeles run in 2011 as well as providing ensemble vocals and playing piano and bass. She also performs holiday tunes from the Golden Age of American songwriting with musical quartet The Sleigh Belles.

Crystal believes that music is serious business but that it should be fun. She encourages her students to play music they love, as well as expanding their musical knowledge. She is a firm believer in basics first and emphasizes theory and technique as the tools to support creativity and provide freedom, power and control. She believes effort beats talent every time and the student who practices consistently will see results, whatever their level of ability. Most of all, she believes we were all born to make music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lesson structure varies depending on the student's instrument, age, level of experience and musical style. However, all lessons focus on:

Amazing singng instructor

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. She loves to perform in front of others now and has a confidence level that amazes me, especially now that she is going into those “teen” years. I think a lot of thanks needs to go to Crystal, for assisting my daughter in reaching her current creative level!

Great piano instructor

Crystal is an amazing piano instructor. She is patient, understanding and dedicated. My daughter has learned so much from her. My daughter’s love for music has increased immensely since learning how to play the piano. This would never have been able to be accomplished without Crystal’s professional and caring teaching style.

She is great at finding the language that allows me to understand adjustments, and is very patient and understanding. I was at ease from the first moment I met her. I highly recommend her to other adults looking to get into singing of any kind!

Music Theory · Online

Lucas is the rarest kind of teacher; the special kind who can turn a student's confused babble into a clear question with a definite answer. I signed up for music theory lessons after writing a lesson plan on Stravinsky's The Rites of Spring (I am a teacher myself) and realizing as I did that I actually had only the vaguest idea what I was talking about as I informed my students that a riot occurred on opening night back in 1913 because Stravinsky build the music on tritones, creating weird chord progressions that built a tension that was never fully resolved because the chord that came where the tension should release was close enough to tease but not close enough to fully resolve that tension. Believe it or not, that is why I decided to take lessons in music theory. I would have driven any teacher but Lucas crazy. If you want to know something about music theory but can't say exactly what, Lucas is your best bet.
