Ian is an awesome teacher! He is so understanding and sensitive to what you need as a student, aiming to meet you where you're at. Also, his knowledge of theory is exceptional, particularly in the area of jazz. I've found him to be well-grounded in his musicianship and feel confident in seeking him for instruction and guidance.

Ian was my combo instructor for 3 semesters at SDSU. If there is one thing I can say about him is that he knows his stuff. I was blown away by the experience and knowledge that he possesses, especially given his age. He knows more about music and how to teach than most instructors I've had. I would recommend him as a teacher in any musical circumstance.

Ian is a very solid teacher. He's very well rounded and can teach virtually any instrument. As a jazz guitarist, I found his insight very helpful with developing my musical vocabulary. He's very well studied with his masters degree, and very good with explaining concepts!

Bijan is a very good guitar instructor. My daughter and I both took guitar lessons and he was able to work with us as individuals since we both had different skill levels. Bijan is very patient with his students and helped us through various learning obstacles. I highly recommend anyone that needs or wants to learn any musical instrument to take lessons from Bijan.

Bijan is a great teacher. Learning to play the cello as an adult is tough, but he's very organized and encouraging. The recital was very anxiety-inducing, but we did really well and I felt a great sense of accomplishment afterward. I am only discontinuing due to distance and time constraints.

Learning a lot!

Kevin is a very knowledgeable, dedicated, patient, flexible, and professional instructor. He is very observant about when to push me to practice more and when to just allow me space to absorb what I've just been taught. And occasionally when I get a little frustrated with my guitar and progress is particularly slow for me we sometimes switch to vocal coaching.
Plus I have an incredibly busy work schedule and Kevin has always been very willing to adjust my lesson time as necessary.

Great Voice Lessons

I've been trying for a while to get to the level where I can confidently sing, knowing that I am doing the best my voice can attain. Kevin is helping me pull through my bad habits, and re-enforcing the proper technique without drowning out my personal style.

Really helpful! Thanks, Kevin!!

My 9 year old son has taken piano lessons with Ferlyn since September and she has been absolutely fantastic! He has gotten so much better since that time. Ferlyn is very good about rewarding and stern (not mean) when she needs to be. She has lots of patience. I've never seen her get frustrated or irritated with my son, which says a lot. Most of all my son really likes her!!!!

We are blessed to have two really great music teachers. Don't hesitate to signup for any of her lessons!

I was able to book incredible dance lessons with Ferlyn at the last minute for my friends who needed dance lessons for their wedding. Here is what they had to say:

"We had a little over a week before our wedding and needed to figure out our first dance. We went to Ferlyn for dance lessons. In 5 sessions we had our first dance down! She helped us build confidence in our dance. She is extremely professional and helpful. She allowed us to change up some moves and suggested new moves that would improve our style. We learned a lot of new techniques with great insight. Our first dance went really well and we definitely recommend her!" - Dang & Niki

I've received glowing reviews from them about that experience ever since, and they'll be cherishing that memory forever. I will continue to recommend Ferlyn for my other friends from now on! She won't let you down!

Thomas M. Del Mar, CA

How do you teach someone how to write a great song? The short answer: you can't! I know, this coming from someone charging money for lessons on how to write songs. I can teach you the elements of a great song. I can show you ways to get started, ways to develop ideas, ways to structure the parts. Great songs have something else; something greater than the sum of its parts. Great songs have personality. Great songs come from the heart. Great songs are made by PEOPLE. That is you! You are ultimately the one putting together these elements. You are not inventing a new language or a 13th note, you are mixing the ingredients to make the dish. I'm just the grocery store. The really friendly, super fresh, incredibly extensive grocery store.

I began writing music seriously at around the age of 14. At this stage, it was all trial and error. I had no idea how chords worked so I just went for it, using my ears to guide me. It was "I like that, what's next?" When I began my Music Major at ...

Tom is an amazing music instructor! My review won’t even scratch the surface of explaining what a fantastic teacher he is! Tom has taught our 4 children since 2008 when they started at School of Rock (SOR). When Tom left SOR and started giving private lessons, we left SOR because we saw the value Tom gave our children. He does a great job of challenging his students, yet keeping it interesting for them. (He's still teaching our kids after 6 years; they never get bored with his lessons and look forward to them every week!) Tom also does a fantastic job of blending music theory into everything he teaches. Our oldest child has a passion for music, and is now studying music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Tom played a huge part in our son getting into Berklee and giving him the skills he needs to succeed while there. I recommend Tom to any level of student. He is simply the best!

Out of all of the music lessons and music instructors that I ever had, Tom was by far my favorite. Never did a lesson seem boring or monotonous. He knows a wide variety of genres and music styles, and shows incredible passion to Music itself . Some instructors just teach you how to play an instrument, but Tom does more than that, by teaching music theory you not only have the ability to play music, but to understand and even write it as well. I am very grateful for being able to have had him as my guitar instructor and would definitely recommend him to anyone who is serious about learning and playing music.

I've been playing guitar for 7 years, and have had 4 different teachers, and Tom has been the best out of all of them. He's always shown me different ways of looking at scales and progressions, and has always avidly pursued me to expand my improvisation skills, and has aided in my development of those skills. I would recommend Tom for anyone, no matter what genre you are trying to pursue, he knows how to make you a good player, and shows you how to appreciate all kinds of music, making you the most versatile musician you can be.
