Aaron D.

San Diego, CA

Whether you are a beginning musician or a seasoned veteran, I can teach you skills in helping to express and create the music you hear in your head. This comes with knowing music theory and training your ears to hear and interpret melody and harmony.

About Aaron

Hello fellow and future musicians, and thanks for checking out my profile!

To tell you a little about myself, I was exposed to music at a very young age since my dad was a musician. I first picked up the drums at the age of 5, and took piano lessons for a year when I was 6. I later played the saxophone in 4th grade, and finally discovered the guitar when I was 9. (Ironic since my dad is a guitarist and the guitar was around the house forever!) He showed me my first chords and really got me started on the instrument, and I played in several local bands in high school playing a range of music
al styles from rock, blues, funk, and reggae. I really didn't take music seriously until I was in college, and began studying under Jerry Coelho, a member of the very first graduating class of the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA, and Dominic Castillo, a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, who was a student of Jerry's as well. After studying under these talented musicians, I went on to pursue my education in music and received my BA in Music from San Jose State University in 2004. I started teaching music privately during my time with Jerry and Dominic and continued to teach during college up until the present, and have taught hundreds of students since. I now live in San Diego where I teach, work as a freelance musician, and play in local funk/jazz/rock group Science Fiction Jazz and gypsy/kickstomp outfit Quel Bordel!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very easy going, friendly individual who believes that learning music is built upon a strong relationship between teacher and student. This relationship involves good communication, honesty, open mindedness, and most importantly the desire to LEARN and have FUN. I approach teaching music by knowing and understanding the student's musical goals, and teaching fundamentals, theory, and technique through the style(s) of music that the student wants to learn. For beginners, I tend to teach basic techniques and chords through simple songs to get the student playing music as quickly as possible.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: couches, table and TV, music stand, student can borrow instrument for first lesson, parents can sit in on lesson

*** Specialties ***
My main musical styles that I perform and teach are rock, blues, jazz, funk, R&B, and reggae. I studied jazz in college so I also have extensive knowledge of jazz theory.

Jason M.

San Diego, CA

I started writing songs at age 7. I recorded my first song at age 16. I use theory and chord progressions with my instrumental students to help develop their own style sometimes by only adding suggestions. I teach a rock camp in the summertime where kids age 7-15 come out and learn to write original music and perform it on stage in only a week.

About Jason

TakeLessons.com Instructor since 2005, Jason M. is now available for online lessons worldwide featuring multiple-camera angles and a share screen experience leaving no stone un-turned!

Jason has been playing guitar for over 15 years and teaching music since 1996. Although trained in standard teaching methods, he has developed his own method of teaching to positively enhance the student€™s strength, dexterity, ear-training, memorization and techniques. His goal as a teacher is specifically designed to help you achieve your goals as an artist and a musician.

This year Jason was also the M
usic Director at the National Guitar Workshop Day Jams Rock Music Day Camp where students ages 7-15 came out to form bands, record original material and master their craft. He also taught beginning to advanced guitar/ vocals/ performance and songwriting as hosted a recording clinic at the end of each day.

Jason has host student showcases/charity benefits where his students were able to get on stage and show off their new talent and perform with other musicians. It wasn't mandatory though, if you were just looking to come out and support there was no pressure other than to come out and have fun.

Jason has been transcribing for guitar and bass since the age of 18 and since then has become a master of the craft including both 5 line staff and tablature, hand-crafted exercises and deconstructions to better enhance the students learning. Artists and genres that Jason has experience with range from Classic Rock, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Guns N' Roses, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Robert Johnson, Pierce the Veil, Paramore, All Time Low, Demi Lava to, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold, The White Stripes, Green Day, Old Crow Medicine Show, Taylor Swift, Mumford and Sons, Bruno Mars, Rob Zombie, John 5, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine, Van Morrison, the Beatles, AC/DC, ZZ-Top, Bullet For My Valentine, All That Remains, Ozzy, Black Label Society, Sublime, Aerosmith, At the Drive In, Type O Negative, the Black Keys, the Pixies, the Toadies, Black Sabbath, Jason Mraz, Lady GaGa, John Mayer and Journey.

Jason attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage where his degree is in Music and Business. He is constantly continuing his education with music theory courses as well as private guitar instruction. He attends guitar workshops and seminars by artists such as John5 and Kerry King who are known as some of the worlds finest guitar players. He reviews every day from a wide range of over 1000 sources working to become a better musician and instructor.

Another nice feature that you might enjoy from one on one sessions with Jason is learning the ability to craft and record your own songs using state of the art technology that caters to your own unique personality. There are no limits!

Jason teaches all experience levels from beginner to intermediate and advanced as well as artists that are signed to labels.

Local news outlet Fox 5 did a segment with one of his students who overcame issues with ADD and depression as a result of taking guitar lessons.

His students advance quickly, some have released albums, been in Guitar World Magazine as well as its online companion and won awards for their music websites.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are scheduled to best fit to the student'€™s schedule when possible.
Students receive complimentary audio lessons and transcriptions of songs upon their first or second session. Jason is a very patient instructor and understands that students learn at a different pace, after all everyone is an individual.

A very helpful and understanding teacher. Throughout the lesson, whenever I would say something he would listen patiently. All in all, great attitude for a teacher, and is willing to change his teaching methods to suit the student. I give him only 4/5 stars because I was looking for a more traditional piano class. I am not a complete beginner at piano so I was looking for a more specialized teacher. However, if I was trying to learn another instrument that he teaches, I would most definitely give him a perfect rating.

Ferlyn F.

San Diego, CA

PLEASE NOTE: For a more accurate look into my experience and resume, please refer to my profile.

About Ferlyn

My Teaching Philosophy:
"Everyone is capable of dancing, playing an instrument, and understanding music & art performance; it is the desire, drive, determination, dedication and discipline instilled within a person and the guidance of the Method that will bring these abilities to light." - Ferlyn

I believe each and every person has a unique brand of movement, understanding of music, and learning style for any dance form or instrument. Whether it is hip hop, breaking, ballet, jazz, tap, ballroom, dancing for a wedding, birthday, or flash mob, playing the piano, singing or even learning the
theory of music or dance, I make sure to bring out the best quality within your learning, expand that knowledge and encourage you to become your fullest potential as my student. I bring a different light to each lesson of dance, piano and/or music and bring your abilities to a level that is more knowledgeable, adequately refined, near to perfection and professional over time, and definitely enjoyable.

My Biography:
I started at the age of 5 with the desire to perform and entertain. With the drive of a freestyle & street dancer, I emulated Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Michael Jackson as a few of my dance inspirations. I also grew up driven into the background of piano, having trained in various methods such as Alfred, Bastien, Faber, Carr-Glover & Glover, Thompson and Schuam, expanding my knowledge and range as a pianist of 25 years.

In Los Angeles, I was determined to make dance my professional career and earned my Baccalaureate in Dance at California State University, Los Angeles. I learned alongside notable and popular mentors and instructors, training in modern, hip hop, breaking, popping, locking, house, tap, jazz and ballet. I choreographed for weddings, birthdays, within multiple shows, as well as became an advanced member of Cal State LA Jazz Tap Corps and the campus' hip hop crew, Team Flight.

Under much dedication for my professional career, my experiences exponentially grew after college as the Dance Choreographer & Director for Crenshaw Arts/Tech Charter High School's dance troupe, CATCH Kids, a troupe renowned for being featured on the Tyra Banks Show and catching the eyes of a few known performers such as Tommy The Clown, Debbie Allen, and Janet Jackson. I was a Dance Instructor in various studios such as the American Vive Dance Foundation, King's Dance Center, Expressions Dance and Movement Center, and Kruciaal Element's The Dancehouse. I worked with Kruciaal Element Dance Company as the previous Assistant Director and part of their freestyle dance crew, Stylematix, and performed in shows and events across San Diego County and Los Angeles County, including Monster Bash San Diego, Mardi Gras in The Gaslamp District, Dancescape, The Hot Spot Alhambra and The Moxie Showcase.

My current disciplines are focused and centered around Southern California as the CEO & Director of a Dance Company. I aim at providing a unique family of dancers and training musicians to be at their best. I am working on several upcoming pieces and providing a dance company that integrates dance community and dance industry knowledge, with a side of the 3 Heart-"Be3ts". Additionally, I have extensive knowledge and experience in Filipino traditional dance, ballroom, social and line dancing, as well as a background in stage management, set design, and vocal training. My personal goals are to continue to express my passions, develop my talents, and especially motivate others to find their own true inner self, dancer, choreographer, musician, performer, entertainer and/or artist.

Del Mar, CA

Easy techniques to write your own song and lyric

About Kevin

Kevin received his Bachelor of Music degree from New England Conservatory. He has been playing the piano since the age of five and received awards in competitions, including a gold prize in Korea National-Level Sonatina Competition at the age of nine, and first place in Certificate of Merit Sonata Festival Competition in 2009. He has also appeared as a soloist, playing a piano concerto with a live orchestra in his youth. As a violinist, he has performed with Youth Engedi, a nine-member string ensemble, in various venues like John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. As a composer, one of his o
rchestral compositions "Soaring Over the Vast Expanse" was premiered in front of an audience of over nine-thousand by Boston Landmarks Orchestra at an outdoor concert at Hatch Shell, Boston. Kevin has a deep passion for teaching, volunteering as an English and math tutor at a local elementary school and teaching piano and violin privately since the beginning of his college years. Discovering his desire to be in a helping profession, Kevin is currently a post-baccalaureate pre-medical student, at San Diego State University, hoping to become a medical doctor. Kevin also volunteers to play the piano at a local hospital, once every week, for the guests who are waiting for their loved ones to finish surgery.

Even though I am fully capable of teaching piano at a high standards, I know that many of my students are not seeking to become the next greatest concert pianist of the century. Since I was little, I played the piano out of love. My most important mission as a teacher is to spread that love of piano and hope that the piano will always be an enjoyment in my students' lives.

I can teach piano, chord piano, composition, music theory, and violin.

Next month will be my son's 4th month learning piano from Kevin. Right now, he's taking two lessons a week for 45 minutes each. One day he plays piano and the other day he learns theory. My son is only 8 years old and it's only been a couple months, but I can already see so much improvement! He really enjoys playing the piano! Kevin is also very easy to talk to. A lot of the other teachers nearby are much older and some of the well known ones are not too comfortable with English. We are definitely going to continue lessons for a long time!

I took classical piano lessons from somebody else before going to Kevin, and I can confirm that he is a great instructor. He was very helpful and approachable (maybe because he wasn't as old as my previous teacher). The only reason why I give him 4 stars instead of 5 is because he was almost too nice and didn't crack down on me enough for not practicing sometimes. I'm just the type of person who needs some more discipline, but that might just be me.
