Find Your Voice With Dallas Singing Lessons!

By Matt B. - Dallas Voice Teacher

Everyone has their own voice and whether we realize it or not, nearly all of us strive to find and develop it. Whether our voice is quite literally a speaking voice, or whether it is expressed through career, lifestyle, or relationships with friends and family, chances are that we have found a vocation and endeavored to grow with and through it at some point in our lives. Our voice is the biggest part of who we are for one simple reason: it identifies our unique, individual character, and allows us to share that with the world.

Teaching singing lessons in Dallas has been a wonderful experience. With historic areas and venues like Deep Ellum and the Meyerson Theatre nearby, as well as the eclectic and quaint Granada Theatre, and charming live music venues such as St. Martin's Wine Bistro and Arthur's Restaurant, the Dallas/Fort Worth area is overflowing with creativity and original talent. Not far away, the Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth is home to the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and the city is home to the wonderful man, founder and superstar himself, Van Cliburn. Other noteworthy musicians who launched their careers from the rich recesses of Deep Ellum's unique culture scene include Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter and Bessie Smith.

One of our main goals as TakeLessons teachers is to help students grow. We teach students not only to find their voice, but to develop and refine their methods of expression. Every single individual I have worked with personally has expressed to me the positive effect that their voice lessons have had on their lives, sometimes in unexpected and amazing ways! Whether you are an experienced performer or have never taken a music lesson in your life, we at TakeLessons will find the right teacher for you and help you to reach your dreams through positive effort and encouragement.

Aristotle once said, "What we have to learn to do, we learn by doing." I encourage you take Dallas singing lessons to find your voice and with it the immense freedom, confidence, and personal growth that will accompany it. Find the voice that is yours and yours alone, and share it with the world!

We will learn vocal health care, anatomy of the breathing apparatus (how sound is formed and released from the body), proper breathing technique and exercises, warm-ups for tongue, lips and vowels, diction, pitch control exercises if necessary, find your range, then onto learning your favorite songs or genres.

I prefer to teach combination piano/voice, or guitar/voice, those students that wish to sing and accompany themselves with an instrument.

Lastly: Please come to me with long term goals of learning to sing, or enhancing your natural-born singing voice. Through my years of experience teaching voice, I have found many students come to me with delusions of grandeur - to attain fame from American Idol, The Voice or other types of entertainment shows. Please come to me because you love to sing and have, perhaps, professional goals and aspirations. It is a learning process, just like any instrument, and doesn't occur overnight, or after taking just four or five lessons.

About Susan B.

I would first like to say that I was born into a musical family. My Dad (choir director) and five older brothers were not only the majority of the choir in our large Catholic church, but Dad had a "tame" Frank Sinatra singing style. My mother played harmonica and piano by ear so acquiring musical intellects spread quickly to all of us. Most of my siblings sang and played instruments as we had a piano, guitar, organ, harmonica, trumpet, clarinet and a recorder to use as we pleased, with or without a music teacher.

I started singing and playing the piano at age four. With consistent encour
agement from my oldest sister (a professional organist for 40+ years), I learned piano and music theory while I was learning to read English, started guitar at eight. A natural born singer, I learned the basics of voice while in choir from middle school through high school while accompanying myself on piano or guitar when singing privately or for others. I wrote my first song at 17 and worked my way through college playing original music in coffee shops while earning my bachelors degree. After college, I started touring across the US (this was long before American Idol and the Internet when if you wanted to make it, you had to "pay your dues" on the road first). Working in the studio was always the most fun and challenging, my first original song got air play in 1990 (this was before CDs).

I received international distribution of my original music starting 2004; however, around that time I learned that performing was not my preferred way of providing service to others - teaching then become my passion. So while working for a local public school district as substitute teacher for general music classes (orchestra, band, choir as well), I was asked to write and teach a beginning songwriting class. From the very first day I had kids' attention wherever I went; and some of those students eventually recorded their own songs in studios.

After 30+ years of professional musicianship spanning across two continents (US and Germany) with originally produced music available on iTunes and two CDs on the market, I have found a unique way of teaching music to others. I most enjoy teaching families with two or more siblings (along with parents, grandparents, etc.) that want to learn to play a variety of instruments and music together. Married couples are welcome too, I can get any combination of people playing music together.

I hold an annual recital every September. I do not force anyone to play in the recital, however most everyone enjoys the experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
First of all, I'll need to know you or your children's goals, dreams and natural talent(s). What types of music do you love best? Are you more the serious type or fun-loving (I can work with both types of personalities but do require a respectful demeanor).

I stress taking lessons once per week. It is extremely important to develop the brain, nervous system, physical coordination all together with momentum and repetitive physical movements; particularly, the first six months of learning.

Please do not expect overnight success, hand/motor skills need to be developed and that doesn't occur with one or two lessons, unless you've had prior experience on your instrument and just need to refresh your brain's neural pathways.

If you are the creative type and wish to compose your own music, then by all means let me know as I teach not only composition, but arranging, music production, and the legal aspects of copyrights and distribution.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano lessons will be given on my baby grand piano. You will need your own guitar or ukulele, I will be using my Yamaha acoustic-electric classical nylon string guitar OR my Epiphone folk steel string guitar. Please see the photo noting the studio's microphones/vocal monitors, plus I have a variety of hand percussion. There are wide varieties of musical opportunities and experiences with me.

*** Specialties ***
Piano: Beginning/intermediate classical piano; pop (piano/voice). Guitar: Beginning classical guitar (fingerpicking only), or beginning general guitar (notes, chords, fingerpicking, strumming, using a pick). Ukulele: Beginning note and strumming patterns. Voice: I can take you to professional levels! Lastly, I would like to take on students who want to learn Joni Mitchell's style of piano and guitar playing. She has never had any formal music training, only plays by ear, particularly on guitar she uses many open tuning inspired from sounds of nature (i.e., birdsongs, ocean waves, etc.).

Here are three recent written recommendations:

"I would highly recommend Ms. T. She has been coming into our home to teach myself and my three children ranging in age from 10 to 4. She tailors each one of our lessons to our ability level and she approaches each lesson with tenderness, care and respect. She has even created special lessons for my 4 year old to engage his creativity and ideas. We have used other instructors before, but have never had such personal attention. I couldn't imagine using anyone else."
Erin O. May 2012

"Ms. T has been teaching my 6 year old daughter classical piano for almost three years. Ms. T is very patient, knowledgeable and encouraging. My daughter wasn't excited about taking piano lessons initially but has really grown to love to play and looks forward to lessons with Ms. T. I recommend other moms give her a call."
Cathy C. March 2012
Year First Hired: 2011
Top Qualities: Personable, On Time, High Integrity

"I am a 58 year old man who has always wanted to learn to play the piano. It wasn't until I met Susan that this dream became possible. I wasn't sure I could learn a new skill like this but she had me reading and playing music within the first couple of lessons. I am impressed with her teaching skills but her performance skills as well. She made me feel relaxed and confident from the beginning. I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn a new instrument and whether you are 4 or 84 she can help make your dream of playing a reality." R. Roberts January 2013

Carol D.

Dallas, TX

Focus is on improving style, range, agility, flexibility and protecting your voice.

About Carol

On singing and performing: I've been a musician for a very long time and can testify that music heals on a mind, body, and soul level! Though my official performances in front of audiences started with playing woodwind instruments such as clarinet, sax, and flute from elementary school through high school in band, my primary instrument in earnest has been voice for the past 27 years.

However, my Mom told me that I have actually been singing--well, humming (a recognizable tune at that!)-- since I was nine months old. I've lead numerous solos in small ensembles and large choirs over the years
, and was very involved not only with the adult music ministry at my church, but directed the children's choir as well. I'm a huge fan of arranging and creating harmonies for duets, trios, and small groups. I’ve shared the stage with Erykah Badu, Ruben Studdard, Rickey Dillard, Chrisette Michele, Ledisi, Peabo Bryson, and CeCe Winans.

I love musical theater, and my favorite credit has to have been when I played the role of "Mama" in Once on This Island (though Nunsense runs a very close second!).

I have a strong passion for the arts--music in particular, and have the musical talent and enthusiasm to guide, empower, and improve the vocal tone, projection, and pitch for the willing student.

*** Music Lesson Details ***
Every student is different--diversity is the spice of life! I tend to tailor my teaching style to the needs of the student. I do expect each student to work on their craft outside of "class" (even if it's just 10-15 minutes of practice a day) and come eager to learn. My teaching style is a co-creative process when it comes to helping students reach their goals. My demeanor is gentle and humor-filled, yet firm. Whether you're preparing for an audition (with all the mental, emotional, and physical energy and health that goes into it), want to hone your harmonizing skills, or just want to strengthen what's already inside of you to the next level for fun, I can help!

It's very important for my students to have a lot of fun as they are singing into their power and gaining more confidence not only in their vocal tone, projection and pitch, but in life as a whole!

*** Specialties ***
My specialties are gospel, pop, R&B, vocal harmonies in small and large groups, and jazz, though I have been classically trained by some of the best vocal coaches over the years.

On being an economist: Economics has been my trade and training since 1993. I've been an analyst at the Florida Legislature as well as consulted in the private sector, but my first love has always been teaching. I've been teaching the intro to micro- and macroeconomic classes consistently since the beginning of 2007 at Southern Methodist University. The algebra comes up a lot in these classes, so I've often ended up tutoring students one one in algebra as well. I was thrilled when TakeLessons added academic tutoring to their offerings in addition to music lessons. :)

***Economics and Algebra Lesson Details***

My students range in varying analytical and mathematical ability, so I meet them where they are when they come to office hours. Sometimes it just takes creating something concrete and practical from something that appears to be quite abstract. Sometimes it's catching up on the math. My approach is the same for any one-on-one endeavor outside the classroom. My goal is for each of my students to succeed!

Carol was a great teacher for my daughter. She is 15 and was brand new when she started. She was very patient and encouraging with her teaching style which helped my daughter have a great experience. On top of that she was flexible with the material and was open to helping students learn songs they actually wanted to learn. I would highly recommend her to everyone!

I have taught acting to small children, teens, and adults in community, private, and collegiate settings. I taught acting at the legendary Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York City. Hillary C.

Richardson, TX

Group and individual lessons available; basics for healthy singing, choral and solo singing

About Hillary

Hillary C. has been singing since joining the Sunrise Singers in elementary school. While singing in various choral groups, she also took private lessons to develop proper vocal technique. Her own students will appreciate the classical training she received as well as musical theater styles she has learned over the years.

At Washington and Lee University, Hillary participated in University Chorus, Chamber Singers, an a cappella group, and performed in musicals on stage. She studied music history, performance, and theory. Hillary earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Vocal Production and recei
ved the Choral Award upon graduation. She has performed with the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, Dallas Symphony Chorus, and Incarnation church choir.

Hillary also studied piano for seven years during which time she won theory awards and was the star pupil of her studio. She recently began a piano pedagogy class for continuing education credit.

Students under Hillary's tutelage can expect to gain an appreciation for classic works, learn basic music theory and ear training, and understand proper keyboard or vocal technique. She believes success comes from loving music and working hard to perform well.

Sarah M.

Dallas, TX

Multi-factored:
1. Discover basic understanding of your vocal instrument.
2. Establish free, correct use of instrument (breathing, releasing tension, placement, articulation) to improve your Vocal Tone, Strength, Range, Ease, Agility, and Confidence.
3. Incorporate in to singing songs - some classical, but most from musicals and modern music (yes, your favorite songwriters!)
4. Establish a singing repertoire.
5. Learn how to find your starting notes on a keyboard (or via computer/app), and, also accompanying yourself.

About Sarah

Since graduating in 2003 from The Juilliard School with a BFA in Drama, I've worked steadily as a professional actress, musician, teacher, and writer, based out of both New York City and Los Angeles. In May of this year, I relocated to Dallas, Texas to be near family, and am excited by the potential of the impressive local arts scene here.

I love teaching and consider each student a gift. Taking part in minds opening and skills developing; discovering how to connect with each individual; the moment when a student's eyes light up and say "Ohhh.. I get it... its like/when..." - these are rem
arkable experiences to share.

Okay, to be specific about what working with me looks like! Lessons will emphasize:
1. open, honest communication
2. curiosity
3. defining and working towards your specific goals (or, figuring it out along the way)
4. a playful, flexible approach

Lessons will be supported with careful preparation and clear notes/practice suggestions (which will be emailed to the student within 24 hours of our session).

I look forward to the prospect of working with you!

My daughter's first lesson was great. Sarah was professional, friendly, knowledgeable, kind, and spoke to my daughter very positively and encouragingly. My daughter is happy to continue lessons and practiced on her own all week. We are all very happy. I'm so glad I found Take Lessons, and may even take some myself. I will definitely use it again for my other children's interests.

Sarah is amazing. She currently gives lessons to my 8 year old boy in singing and piano. She is soooo conscientious of making sure his experience with music straddles the line between fun and educational and my son is always excited for piano lessons. She has a very kind and gentle nature which is great for teaching kids, my son told me he doesn't vulnerable or ashamed if he messes up during his lessons (which is huge for him, he's not super good with criticism).

She has a genuine interest and concern for her pupils and is a pleasure to deal with as a parent. She writes follow up emails and gives me guidance for what my son should study that week (which is nice because I know nothing about music) and it's great tool for me to help him remain accountable.

His growth has been apparent but his confidence and love for all things musical is now blindingly obvious. I believe this has much to do with Sarah's instruction.

Whether it is for yourself or you child, if you don't chose Sarah as your tutor I am sorry to say that you are missing out on a talented, kind and committed teacher.
