Swen H. Oakland, CA

Upright bass has in fact been my main instrument for my professional career. I have played upright bass since I was 13, going through classical method and thoroughly studying theory and improvisation. I went on to study Jazz Studies at Northwestern University where I started gigging professionally at private events and around the city of Chicago. I have played upright bass with small jazz groups, country/bluegrass bands, a classical string orchestra, musical theater orchestra pits, and rock bands. I can take you from day 1 of getting good sounds out of your upright bass, to playing with the bow, reading music, creating your own bass lines to songs of all styles, and playing in a jazz context of improvising bass lines and taking solos.

About Swen

Hello! I am Swen, a musician, producer/engineer, and songwriter. I gig professionally around the Bay Area in various bands and jazz groups. I mainly gig on bass (upright and electric), but I now play drums in a garage rock/surf rock band. In addition to bass and drums, I also play and teach piano and guitar, as well as music recording/producing/engineering and music software. I can travel to your location to teach, or you can come take lessons at my studio in Oakland. Feel free to contact me to discuss your musical goals!

James S. Castro Valley, CA

Left hand fundamentals (shifting and spacing), right hand technique (bow control, and/or jazz pizz). Exercises, pieces, musical analysis beginning to advanced.

About James

Hello! I am a performing freelance musician who loves to teach. I recently graduated from the Master's of Music program at the San Francisco Conservatory of music. I've played with many groups and orchestras in the bay area including the Symphony Silicon Valley, Berkeley Symphony, Napa Valley Symphony, Stockton Symphony, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and more. In my undergrad, most of my playing was in jazz. I've toured Europe (Italy, Switzerland, and France) with a big band in 2007, and performed at Yoshi's. I began on the electric bass in high school, playing in bands and everything from the Beatles to Tool. I also picked up some electric guitar. I've taught double bass annually at La Honda Music Camp as a double bass counselor, and look forward to taking on many students and sharing

Great Teacher with lot of experience!

James has lot of experience especially on the kind of music I'm learning. There wasn't even a single piece that he was not able to give me advices and improve the way I play (or try to play).

Also on the personal side he is really friendly and ready to help on any other informations like basses, bow, strings, songs, books, etc.

To summarize, I saw a lot of progress in my playing after taking the classes with James... totally recommend him!
Dan G. Fairfax, CA

About dan

Hi! I have studied, performed and taught the violincello (the cello), electric bass and contra-bass (acoustic, upright or double bass) for over two decades. I have played in symphonies, orchestras, chamber music ensembles, rock , blues , R&B, funk, and bluegrass bands, jazz combos, and Indian kirtan ensembles, performing everything from Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis. Among numerous outstanding players and teachers, I have studied with Cameron Sawzin of the Boston Virtuosi as well as with renowned bassist Victor Wooten at his camp in Tennessee and California. I take an intuitive approach to my lessons, focusing on the feel and tone of the music. I have found this to be the fastest and most effective way for my students to learn. I also put emphasis ...

I would highly recommend Daniel! He has a true gift for teaching in a way that supports students to blossom in their own unique way. A deep listener with a talent for finding what lights up each person's musical inspiration; Daniel is patient, supportive, and a talented musician. I left lessons feeling inspired to practice instead of obligated to. Best teacher I ever had!

Finally a teacher I can learn from!

Dan came over to my apt and was very polite and a good listener. I told him what I wanted to learn and the types of music I liked. We talked for a bit and I instantly felt comfortable. After a good laugh we launched right in! I found his teaching style to be invigorating! We "jammed" on the first chord pattern he showed me and it actually sounded good. After a few more tricks I was hooked. I left my first session with Dan feeling not only inspired, but also informed. I had material to practice. Dan is a very fun, smart, broadly trained talent to learn from. I highly recommend him. A true musician!

Music Performance
Awakening

I invited Daniel as a guest teacher into my junior high classroom, and I witnessed a very natural and compelling interest awaken from both he and the students. He has a very humble and direct way of sharing his knowledge and skills, which includes Socratic teaching, and (an) awakening (of) interest and enthusiasm. My students immediately felt very comfortable in his presence, they gained a lot, and they left the class feeling inspired to further feed their curiosity on the topic.

Robert A. Berkeley, CA

I am an active professional bassist working around the United States. 90% of what I do is performance, but I am also committed to helping the up-and-coming generation of bass players find their path. I am a demanding teacher, but lessons are always fun and insightful. If you are applying for colleges or taking auditions of any sort, I know how to get you over the finish line in only a few lessons. I have won 5 professional auditions in addition to studying with some of the best teachers in the U.S..
Additionally, I am fully equipped to make professional quality recordings my students need to make for applications (or fun!).
Please call TakeLessons and let's talk about some bass!

About Robert

I am one of the most in-demand classical bassists in California. I actively play with 5 orchestras as a contracted member and several more as a guest. In addition to orchestral I do lots of recording sessions at Skywalker Ranch for film and video game scores. My free time Is very limited, but I am committed to teaching in addition to performing. In my lessons I stress not just technique, but more critically, how to self-diagnose problems in one's playing. Many of my students have gone on to major universities and conservatories to pursue careers in music.

Jessica H. San Francisco, CA

I have been playing double bass since I was 15 years old. I have years of experience performing in professional orchestras and chamber groups .
As a classical trained musician, I am good about understanding music from all kinds of genres .

About Jessica

Hi. This is Jessica H. I came from a family with strong music background. My father is a successful music educator, conductor. Currently I just graduated from San Francisco conservatory of music with Masters degree. I am a very patient person who has huge passion about working with kids.I have been teaching piano over 15 years. Since I have been teaching a quite long time. I have had students who past the highest level of ABRSM exams. I can be more serious and push a student to get ahead, or simply teach to have fun - to appreciate and enjoy music. I have learned, is to expect the best, pay closest attention to the students - to what they are ready for, what they want, what they are struggling with, and have a good sense of humor. Inspiring and developing students passion into music.

Jessica is an awesome Music and Piano teacher! She has a lot of experience both as a musician and teacher. She is very patient, keeps things fun and challenging! I especially like how she illustrates musical concepts and dynamics. She seems to be comfortable with teaching both adults and children ( I am an adult, and she also teaches my kids). Matthew Fisher-Keller has been teaching my 5 & 6 year old to play piano since August.
He is amazing with my children who have completely different temperaments. He is able to keep them focused, motivated, and interested which is no simple task. He approaches each lesson with passion and excitement which is infectious. He is loving and kind but never a push-over or disciplinarian. He is able to communicate with them on their level and still keep them progressing in their lesson plans. My kids actually get on the piano at random times and crank out tunes even when they don't have to practice. I am so thrilled with their growth. He is ALWAYS on time and an excellent communicator. He keeps his schedule and gives ample notification should there be any conflicts so that you can reschedule lessons. This has been an added bonus for a Mom that is juggling so many extracurricular and school activities. I am thankful for Matthew and would recommend him to ANY parent or person seeking a piano teacher.
