Swen H.

Oakland, CA

Upright bass has in fact been my main instrument for my professional career. I have played upright bass since I was 13, going through classical method and thoroughly studying theory and improvisation. I went on to study Jazz Studies at Northwestern University where I started gigging professionally at private events and around the city of Chicago. I have played upright bass with small jazz groups, country/bluegrass bands, a classical string orchestra, musical theater orchestra pits, and rock bands. I can take you from day 1 of getting good sounds out of your upright bass, to playing with the bow, reading music, creating your own bass lines to songs of all styles, and playing in a jazz context of improvising bass lines and taking solos.

About Swen

Hello! I am Swen, a musician, producer/engineer, and songwriter. I gig professionally around the Bay Area in various bands and jazz groups. I mainly gig on bass (upright and electric), but I now play drums in a garage rock/surf rock band. In addition to bass and drums, I also play and teach piano and guitar, as well as music recording/producing/engineering and music software. I can travel to your location to teach, or you can come take lessons at my studio in Oakland. Feel free to contact me to discuss your musical goals!

James S.

Castro Valley, CA

Left hand fundamentals (shifting and spacing), right hand technique (bow control, and/or jazz pizz). Exercises, pieces, musical analysis beginning to advanced.

About James

Hello! I am a performing freelance musician who loves to teach. I recently graduated from the Master's of Music program at the San Francisco Conservatory of music. I've played with many groups and orchestras in the bay area including the Symphony Silicon Valley, Berkeley Symphony, Napa Valley Symphony, Stockton Symphony, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and more. In my undergrad, most of my playing was in jazz. I've toured Europe (Italy, Switzerland, and France) with a big band in 2007, and performed at Yoshi's. I began on the electric bass in high school, playing in bands and everything from
the Beatles to Tool. I also picked up some electric guitar. I've taught double bass annually at La Honda Music Camp as a double bass counselor, and look forward to taking on many students and sharing what I've learned, and what I will continue to learn with them!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am easy to get along with, and I relate very well with students. Lessons are laid back and I tend to make a lot of jokes, but the material itself is rigorous and I expect a great deal of effort. I enjoy sharing musical philosophy, and I believe that private lessons have generally 2 main functions. 1) For the student to achieve the level of learning how to practice independently from the teacher (and discover their own musical voice), and 2) (at an advanced level) for the student to learn that specific teacher's approach to musical philosophy and that specific instrument.

My curriculum will vary greatly depending on the needs or wants of the student. For beginners, I might start with exercises/etudes to begin developing fluency or coordination. I will teach how to read music and understand the fundamental building blocks of music theory, and continue depending on the student's interest. The materials depend on the genre and instrument. For more advanced students lessons will be more focused on specific topics (advanced techniques, repertoire, excerpts, theory, auditions, philosophies, etc).

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students provide the instrument, music stand, and books or materials which will be discussed.

Great Teacher with lot of experience!

James has lot of experience especially on the kind of music I'm learning. There wasn't even a single piece that he was not able to give me advices and improve the way I play (or try to play).

Also on the personal side he is really friendly and ready to help on any other informations like basses, bow, strings, songs, books, etc.

To summarize, I saw a lot of progress in my playing after taking the classes with James... totally recommend him!

About dan

Hi!
I have studied, performed and taught the violincello (the cello), electric bass and contra-bass (acoustic, upright or double bass) for over two decades. I have played in symphonies, orchestras, chamber music ensembles, rock , blues , R&B, funk, and bluegrass bands, jazz combos, and Indian kirtan ensembles, performing everything from Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis. Among numerous outstanding players and teachers, I have studied with Cameron Sawzin of the Boston Virtuosi as well as with renowned bassist Victor Wooten at his camp in Tennessee and California.

I take an intuitive approach to my lessons, focusing on the feel and tone of the music. I have found this to be the fastest and most effective way for my students to learn. I also put emphasis on technique, specifically healthy posture and body alignment in relation to your instrument.
You should take lessons with me if you want to realize your dream of becoming a great auditory artist . I never employ pressure tactics with my students. I only facilitate inspiration, knowledge and understanding. I love teaching and sharing the Joy of music with others. Working with music for so many years I have become aware of the fears in our society surrounding playing music and learning a new instrument. I help my students to see through these fear-based thought patterns compassionately and patiently so that they can truly Make Their Musical Dreams Come True. All ages welcome. It is never too early or too late to start!

Cheers, Daniel

I had a great experience learning drum with Dan.I have zero experience with drum, I asked Dan to help me play a song based on the video I like, he figured out how the drummer did it right away and taught me different style of playing it.
He is very patient and professional on what he is teaching. He knows how to help me to process different drum beats on my own pace, and encourage me to try out new things in each lesson. After taking his class, I enjoy playing and practicing drum on my spare time.
I am very happy to learn drum from Dan, and recommend him to people who is interested in learning or improving their music skills.

I would highly recommend Daniel! He has a true gift for teaching in a way that supports students to blossom in their own unique way. A deep listener with a talent for finding what lights up each person's musical inspiration; Daniel is patient, supportive, and a talented musician. I left lessons feeling inspired to practice instead of obligated to. Best teacher I ever had!

Finally a teacher I can learn from!

Dan came over to my apt and was very polite and a good listener. I told him what I wanted to learn and the types of music I liked. We talked for a bit and I instantly felt comfortable. After a good laugh we launched right in! I found his teaching style to be invigorating! We "jammed" on the first chord pattern he showed me and it actually sounded good. After a few more tricks I was hooked. I left my first session with Dan feeling not only inspired, but also informed. I had material to practice. Dan is a very fun, smart, broadly trained talent to learn from. I highly recommend him. A true musician!

Matthew Fisher-Keller has been teaching my 5 & 6 year old to play piano since August.
He is amazing with my children who have completely different temperaments. He is able to keep them focused, motivated, and interested which is no simple task. He approaches each lesson with passion and excitement which is infectious. He is loving and kind but never a push-over or disciplinarian. He is able to communicate with them on their level and still keep them progressing in their lesson plans. My kids actually get on the piano at random times and crank out tunes even when they don't have to practice. I am so thrilled with their growth. He is ALWAYS on time and an excellent communicator. He keeps his schedule and gives ample notification should there be any conflicts so that you can reschedule lessons. This has been an added bonus for a Mom that is juggling so many extracurricular and school activities. I am thankful for Matthew and would recommend him to ANY parent or person seeking a piano teacher.

William T.

San Francisco, CA

I have been playing the upright bass for 10 years, and can show students the path to proper technique and a rich, full sound. My specialty on the upright bass is jazz, but I have experience playing in a variety of settings. I can also assist those that wish to improve their improvisational technique and approach.

About William

I have been studying music for 18 years, and have played a variety of styles including jazz, funk, R&B, soul, Latin, rock, punk, and pop. I have studied with many different tutors over the years, and have studied music theory and performance at both Sacramento City College, and City College of San Francisco. I am also currently a regularly performing bassist. I believe in exposing students to multiple approaches to musical concepts and methods, so that their technique and intuition can develop as organically as possible.
