Jeff H.

Richmond, VA

About Jeff

Jeff began playing guitar at the age of ten. His very first performance was in the fifth grade, performing in a rock band. In high school he sang in the concert choir, chamber ensemble and studied music theory piano and classical guitar. After high school, Jeff obtained a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Music Composition from Virginia Commonwealth University and continued classical guitar studies with Jesus Silva who studied with Andres Segovia. After graduating college, he directed the guitar program at J Sergeant Reynolds Community College for nearly a decade, receiving a faculty recogniti
on and achievement award for five or more years of outstanding service. Jeff currently performs with his own group called the Jeff H. trio, specializing in contemporary jazz performing at various venues and occasions.

Jeff’s music theory and teaching ability is extremely varied and ranges from classical to rock, blues to jazz. Some of his top skills are improvisational guitar techniques, which include sight-reading, understanding chord theory, and how to improvise melodically over various chord changes. Teaching by example and coaching students through performance is not only good practice, but a great confidence builder for the student.

Over the years, Jeff has developed a specific method of teaching that has proven to be extremely effective regardless of age or skill level. Jeff uses a three-pronged approach that focuses on music knowledge, method, and skills training. Through this method, students not only learn their instrument, but enjoy their lessons. This is key aspect for students to achieving their goals. Lastly but important is making the lesson fun and enjoyable for both the student and teacher.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher, recognizing a students goals and creating a strategy to reach them applies to all levels of guitar playing. Jeff will evaluate each student’s abilities and skills and tailor the lessons appropriately. In general, Jeff has at least four approaches on how you may learn and process information: by example, analogy, hypothetical, and by written instruction. In addition to teaching things to students, another primary task of the teacher is to develop the strategy that will get the student where they want to go. The student will establish the goals and together student and teacher will stay focused on the result they want to achieve.

Jeff has been dedicated to music and the teaching of music at all educational levels. Teaching music teaches you to be human; it helps you recognize and appreciate beauty so you learn to be sensitive; music gives you something to cling to when all else fails; music helps you to have more love, more compassion, more gentleness, more good, in short more life. That is why Jeff teaches music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Amps, stands, upright piano, lessons in front living room w/ seating for parents.

*** Specialties ***
My teaching methods are three pronged, to teach, coach and mentor all in one lesson. I take each student at whatever level they are at to assist in setting their goals and achievements. For example, as part of the mentoring segment i do encourage students to perform for each other, open mics and other performances to help give the student positive musical self esteem. I do teach in the areas of classical, jazz and blues with a concentration in contemporary jazz, jazz arranging, jazz theory and jazz transcriptions.

Connor T.

Richmond, VA

With over 10 years of experience as a professional musician and a Bachelor of Music Degree from VCU, I prefer to teach music by coming at it from an angle my student is excited about. Whether that means the music of The Beatles, Taylor Swift, AC/DC, or anything else, people progress quickly when they love what they are learning! My experience covers all styles of music, with special expertise in rock, pop, jazz, and blues. I also have an additional expertise in improvisation in these styles with experience with country, bluegrass, funk, metal, and classical guitar.

About Connor

I first fell in love with music at the age of 7 after hearing Led Zeppelin's "œBlack Dog". I soon after received my first guitar and started learning all of my favorite classic rock songs. Over time my tastes began to branch out to include all kinds of music from country to jazz. Knowing that I wanted to pursue a long-term career in music, I decided to choose a college with a strong music program, and received a bachelor's degree in music performance and jazz studies from Virginia Commonwealth University in May 2010.

As a jazz guitarist, I perform regularly in a variety of settings wit
h various ensembles. For the last several years I have played at various venues in the Richmond area, such as Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Tobacco Company restaurant, Havana 59, Maymont, and at private functions including weddings, receptions, wine tastings and private parties for such organizations as the MCV and VCU Alumni Association and the Science Museum of Virginia. I have also performed in professional pit orchestras for Christian Youth Theater, Richmond Triangle Players, and Theater IV/Virginia Rep. In addition, I compose and perform original tunes in various styles and instrumentation.

I love to listen to, play, and teach many styles of music ranging from classic rock to country, jazz, metal, classical, and pop. Since 2008, I have been teaching music professionally to all ages from 5 to 70. I teach all levels and styles of guitar, as well as beginner piano and beginner to intermediate level bass guitar.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music should be fun, therefore, I firmly believe that music lessons should be tailored to a student's interests, tastes, and goals as much as possible. If you want to learn pop, then I will gear your lessons toward pop. If you want to learn rock, then we will move in that direction from day one. I still focus on all of the basic techniques of playing, reading music, rhythm, and theory but never exclusively within the sometimes sterile pages of a method book. I will often challenge students by suggesting tunes or exercises that I think will be beneficial to their long-term development, but I also like for students to guide their own learning as much as possible so that they enjoy music above all. The lesson style and level of difficulty will vary depending on the student'™s prior experience and skill level.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student should provide their own instrument, music stand, and amp (if necessary). I will provide my own guitar and amp and much of the music to be learned. Over time, students may be encouraged to purchase certain method books to further their progress.

*** Specialties ***
Specialize in jazz, rock, blues, and music theory. Experience in pop, classical music, country, bluegrass, metal, and funk.

He is GREAT at making me understand theory, which I never have. He's also exciting and challenging in learning how to look at music and anticipate/understand where it's going versus my habit of only looking one note ahead at a time. I wish he was a little more interested in teaching classical music, but I also understand that the new stuff I am learning from him will greatly improve my playing of that.

Steve A.

Richmond, VA

About Steve

Steve A. is a musician, guitarist, composer based in Richmond, VA. His musical journey started upon hearing a rendition of “Puff the Magic Dragon”,played by his uncle along with other folks songs of the day.  Since then, he’s been soaking up every ounce of music that he can absorb.  Over the years, he has played guitar, bass, piano, violin, saxophone, and various other electronic instruments.  Guitar always and forever will be his primary instrument. He’s been playing for close to twenty-six years, teaching for ten. Having received a Masters of Music degree from Virginia Commonwealth Universit
y in 2005, he’s continued at said institution as a member of both the guitar faculty and theory faculty. When not wearing my professorial hat in the classical realm, he keeps a roster of private students that covers all ages, styles and skill levels that keep him on his toes. Each student brings their own character and style to lessons, forcing him into new and creative ways of presenting the given material so music makes sense to each and sparks their musical creativity. At the heart of his teaching, Steve A. strives to give students the necessary techniques and musical vocabulary to express themselves through their instrument. This creative energy flows into my own compositions, which finds him splitting time between writing music in the more traditional “songwriter” vein and soundscapes that vere towards the classical and electronic world of sound.

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson I teach focuses on building the techniques and music vocabulary for students to expressing their creativity through their chosen instrument.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Proficient in using Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Reason, Kontakt, Reaktor.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Taylor 414, Fender Tele, MacBook Pro

*** Specialties ***
experimentation with tape loops.
