Jessica A.

Chicago, IL

I love to teach students how to efficiently create characters with their voice, to effectively differentiate tone-colors and to communicate with audiences.

I've been teaching voice for 10 years, and I am (almost) a qualified Doctor of vocal music. I have taught students from school-aged to undergraduate music majors to adult singers. My students have sung in professional and semi-professional musical productions, in vocal ensembles and even as operatic soloists. My approach is founded upon a body-oriented vocal technique that emphasizes physical ease and self-knowledge. I try to combine this technical training with an understanding of the texts, stories and history of any given piece. I hope that through singing lessons with me, students will learn to control their voices efficiently, to become more knowledgeable about the music they perform and to develop the skills to be clear and expressive vocal communicators.

About Jessica

Jessica is an advanced candidate for the Doctorate of Music with 10 years experience teaching students of all ages and musical backgrounds. She holds a Masters from the University of California and teaches in a range of styles; from opera and theatre, to jazz and singer-song writing. She loves to teach a variety of genres, but always from the foundation of a body-oriented vocal technique. She encourages students to become knowledgeable about the music they perform and to develop the skills to be clear and expressive vocal communicators.

When not teaching, Jessica is a professional vocal so
loist who performs with ensembles around the world. Her performances have garnered praise for their “…virtuosic whimsy” (New York Times), “expressive flexibility combined with imagination…” (The Sydney Morning Herald) and “…upmost security and power...” (Chicago Tribune).

She is also an alumna of the Young Artist Program at the Victorian Opera Company. As a performer, she specializes in adventurous repertoire; singing opera, chamber music, experimental, conventional and contemporary-classical music. Her love of experimentation influences her teaching. She likes to take exploratory approach, to find the best way to help each individual student improve.

*** Lesson Details ***
A first lesson will always begin with getting to know each other. It is important to me that we figure out why a student has come to have lessons and to decide on the best path forward to help them reach their goals. Lessons will include a mix of technical work (to improve vocal tone quality, range, flexibility and ease) and working on repertoire. Students can bring in songs they want to learn and we work on them together. Alternately, I might suggest appropriate pieces to complement other things we are working on (for example, if we are working on improving some aspect of a students listening skills, I might suggest a piece that helps to cement that learning, or if we are trying to improve a student's ease in a particular part of their range, we might work on a piece that uses that part of their range).

Singing
An encouraging, flexible and knowledgeable teacher

Jessica taught me for a couple of years when I was first staring to take singing seriously. I was very pleased with her teaching methods and general manner.
My lessons were tailored to my specific needs: Jessica was understanding of my limited technical knowledge but still was able to guide me through many beneficial vocal exercises. The technique I had been singing with previously was poor and possible harmful to my voice, and I feel like Jessica did a wonderful job of building up a very functional framework of ideas I was able to use to guide my private practice.
As well as helpful technical tools, Jessica provided me with insightful and constructive feedback into the way I was performing my songs, ensuring skills I built up from the exercises were translating across to my performance of material.
Jessica is easy to get along with, honest, persistent and encouraging. I would recommend her as a teacher for anyone, regardless of their singing style or level of skill.

Singing
Great, all-around teacher

Jessica taught me a wide range of techniques, from energizing the body to bel canto exercises, that really increased the strength and range of my voice. She is excellent at diagnosing bad technique, and creates innovative ways to fix it; in addition, she taught me how to master the basics, such as resonating the vowels and working with air flow. She is also great at helping you connect with songs and making them your own. Although I mainly sing pop music, she can teach you a classical technique that can be applied to any style of singing. I started with Jessica a beginner, but after taking her lessons I feel much more confident about my singing. She's also a great person to get to know :).

Keanon K.

Chicago, IL

About Keanon

I love everything about teaching! I love music; it is my life. I sleep, breathe and dream music. I am a Columbia University Chicago graduate; I graduated with a degree in Music with a concentration in Classical Voice. I have performed in numerous operas and musicals, as well as, sung on Gospel Cruises all around the world. In my eyes, the student is the main focus so whatever issues, concerns or request the student may have I will treat them with priority. I am all about strengthening the natural born talent and making my students the best vocalist they can be. I'm here to serve the students
and that is what I will do until they are confident in their gift...music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I take music very seriously but at the same time I like my lessons to be fun and a joyous experience. I am very patient and helpful with any struggles that may seem too hard to the student. I will start my students off with the basic vocal warm ups and then move on to material that they would like to cover and if so the student doesn't have material to cover, I will present them with material. Being a singer is not easy at all, so I will challenge my students by giving exercises that challenge them to sing for proficient. I will also bring in material that is brand new and ask the students questions about the piece. The student is in the lesson to learn everything about music, so any type of material that I feel will benefit them and help them move closer to their goal, I will definitely present to them. After 3 to 6 months students will be able to sing in the 3 minor keys and the major key. The student will also have knowledge and know how to sing at least 3 different modes. The singer will know how to read basic sheet music and perform it with solfege. The singer will also have 4 songs of my choice or their choice mastered and ready to perform in front of an audience. Lastly, the singer will have knowledge of proper breath control while performing, usage of a microphone, and intonation.

Keanon knows his stuff. He knows how to challenge you to expand your range and he knows how to listen. He explains pertinent facts about singing and gives examples of what he expects, but he also lets you learn at your own pace. He is an excellent teacher. Now I just have to remember to breathe.

I've helped a lot of musical theater singers to get in the best shape. All of them are doing great in terms of getting roles. I've been teaching this subject for over 15 years and know how to make most dramatic results out of connection between the character and singing!

About Val

Whether you are an experienced musician or just in the beginning of your educational journey, I perhaps, can help you to advance you potentials and bring your skills to the next level.

First and foremost I am an expert in teaching voice. Not many teachers in Chicago have clients that are currently topping Billboard charts and get signed by major record labels. I do!!!

I taught in Paris, Barcelona, Dubai and New York and have an extensive experience in working with a wide variety of musical genres including Pop, R&B, JAZZ, Rock, Country, Musical Theatre, Gospel and last but not least Clas

Not only I have been continually developing my own art of coaching and excellence of teaching music to others, but also making much needed connections in the music industry. I am selective who I work with, but I do give a career advice and try to match talent with the best opportunities as they come.

Furthermore, I have a strong expertise in teaching piano, music theory, ear training, orchestration and arrangement.
As a working studio producer myself I have been tutoring a number of domestic and international singers, artists, musicians and bands, and have been helping them to further their projects and careers.

The greatest experience I've had with singing.
I was a complete beginner when I came to Val for vocal training, with no experience or any technique. In a very short amount of time he helped me find my voice, taught me all the basics, gave me useful exercises for me to practice on my own, and built a very specific training suited to my voice. All of this in the greatest atmosphere, positive and constructive. He's professional and dedicated. I've accomplished great progress with his help and recommend it to you all. You won't be disappointed.

We're searching for our own voice, for the greatest version of ourselves. With lifelong experience and his own personal library of exercises hardwired into his brain, Val is the perfect instructor to lead us to the promise land. His ability to dissect what is happening inside our vocal instrument is uncanny, and he packs the ability to translate this to the student effectively. Each lesson is customized to the needs of the student, and he also involves music theory when necessary to better help us understand and visualize the task at hand.

In my time spent with Val, I have seen week to week improvements both as a singer and as a song writer. I am grateful to have connected with Val as I am excelling in my craft each day and taking the steps to reach the potential he sees in me as a vocalist and musician.
