Hello! My name is Phil B., I'm a working theater artist, musician, composer, and educator based in Somerville, MA. I've taught performing arts to students ages 2-75 for the last six years with organizations like the American Repertory Theatre, Citi Performing Arts Center, 826 Boston, Boston University, Puppet Showplace Theatre, and Cambridge Public Schools.
My private lessons are completely flexible and designed to meet the needs and goals of each individual student wherever they are in their own unique creative journey.
GUITAR: Are you looking to finally play that dusty guitar that's b
een sitting in the corner forever? Has your child been begging you for lessons? Maybe you played a long time ago and want to tune up your skills, or be able to play music at your school or place of worship, or you're a singer who's looking to accompany yourself when playing gigs. I've taught students of all ages the basics of guitar from posture to theory, reading, chords, strumming, picking, and relaxation techniques to make this instrument feel like an extension of your own body.
VOICE/SINGING: Everyone is born with their own unique voice which, over the course of a lifetime, acquires its own unique habits, tensions, fears, limitations, and strengths. I firmly believe that anyone can sing once they understand the basics of vocal mechanics: need, thought, breath, and sound. Together, we'll work to release old habits and tensions, strengthen the vocal muscles and reconnect with the true voice deep inside you.
SONGWRITING: Is there a tune you can't get out of your head? Maybe that perfect rhyme seems just out of reach, or the next chord sounds all wrong? I've written countless songs for children, crafted original English lyrics and translations for foreign artists, and composed music for poetry and prose. My feedback system will help you communicate your thoughts and emotions clearly through words and music while fostering your own unique style, sound, and personal aesthetic.
ACTING/STORYTELLING: Looking to nail that next audition? Hoping to deepen your relationship with text? Do you get nervous when asked to speak in public? In private acting/storytelling lessons, we'll discuss tools and strategies to overcome onstage jitters, analyze and interpret text, connect with the body, and release blocks and tensions in order to let any story tell itself through you.
I am able to travel to anyone within walking distance of an MBTA station/stop or host students at my home studio between Porter and Union Squares in Somerville.
My goal as a teacher is to help each student recognize and actualize their own latent ability, passion, point-of-view, and spirit through performance. Every artistic venture is a new journey, and I'm eager to walk a part of it alongside you.

She has also performed professionally with: Rachel York, Patrick Cassidy, Lee Meriwether, and dance icon Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Following undergraduate study, Ashley decided it was time to branch out from the musical theatre realm and into the world of teaching and contemporary music. In January 2013, Ashley toured the west coast and attended the infamous NAMM with an original metal/rock band entitled the Mike Kerr Group, for which she sang lead vocals.
Ashley is available to travel to students homes for lessons, or students are welcome to come to her comfortable air conditioned studio which is furnished with a baby grand piano for both Vocal and Piano lessons.

I have enjoyed my lessons with Ashley because:
1. Pace of instruction is perfect for my level (beginner) and available practice time (limited).
2. Ashley isn't simply teaching me how to play a song; rather she is improving my technique in this critical period where bad habits can still be changed.
3. Always on time (granted instruction is at her location but none the less this is appreciated).
Coaching for performance, audition, and development. I love working with kids and have a lot of experience with almost every age group.

"I met Marcus while preparing for a callback a few months ago and have met with him regularly every since. His passion for acting is so evident by his thor
ough understanding of both theory and practice. His lessons include technique and blocking, but also studying other works by the playwright and understanding works in the same genre. Marcus truly has a well-rounded teaching approach and cares that his students learn. He has been an invaluable resource!"

"The BEST Teacher One Could Hope to Find!
Elizabeth's unparalleled enthusiasm for life and acting shines through in her performances and teaching style. S
he shows a strong proficiency in many different styles and on multiple genres.
She's reliable, experienced, professional, and a great lady all around. One of Elizabeth's main strengths is her ability to convey a given subject matter in a way that is meaningful, constructive and easily understood.
I'm also an acting teacher (private lessons and in the classroom) as well as a professional performer. I've found it to be a great pleasure working with Elizabeth and I would strongly recommend her as a teacher and a performer."

Nathan was my director for a show in October 2013. His communication skills as a teacher, director, and collaborator made the process very enjoyabl
e and also allowed me to grow as an actor. He is an experienced professional who excels in working with both seasoned actors and those who may never have performed before. I gained a lot from working with him and highly recommend Nathan to anyone seeking a super fun, informative, and productive acting student experience!"

"Rachel is very nice and willing to help. She takes time to get to know her students before working with them to get the most out of the lessons. This was
my first time ever taking lessons so I was a bit nervous but Rachel is super friendly and doesn't judge you on your ability. I also live on a college campus and she was willing to do the lessons on campus. Since I didn't have a way to get to her this was very awesome! I'm very excited for the lessons to come."

"Marcella is such a wealth of information! I cannot tell you how well worth it training with her has been. I have gone on to The American Academy of Dramat
ic Arts and she was the sole person responsible for helping me with my audition. Her "cold reading" technique is so easy and it lands me every role I audition for! HIGHLY recommend her. And, she is so very sweet and smart. Thanks Marcella!!!!!"

"I took freshman English and IB Theatre with Mrs. Hashem-Liles. She really goes out of her way to make sure that her students are engaged and interested in
the material. Her dedication to her students and her passion for education are clear. As a freshman, she showed me that anyone's writing can be improved (no matter how good you think you are!) As a senior, she became a mentor and guide, especially in theatre. I consistently left her class thinking that I had learned something new and interesting. Sometimes I wish I could go back to high school, if only to take her class again! I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a tutor, as she is willing and eager to take the time needed to help all of her students."
