Hello Singers! I am an experienced teacher with a Bachelors and Masters Degree in vocal performance and offer a wide range of vocal expertise. My students have done exceptionally well, with a many individuals going on to score very highly in NYSSMA, perform solo recitals at Carnegie Hall and attend prestigious music schools such as Laguardia High School and The Manhattan School of Music. My vocal studio and teaching has be

Indigo S.

Brooklyn, NY

Establish healthy technique, undo bad habits, and free your natural voice, enabling you to sing in the style of your choice.

About Indigo

Indigo has been working in the performing arts since she was biting ankles, first as a dancer and vocalist, and later as a guitarist. She's composed music for and/or sung dozens of international television commercials, spots on Law and Order and songs in Films premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and as a lead guitarist and vocalist, toured the US, Canada, Europe and Iceland, extensively, performing in hundreds of theaters and rock clubs around the world, including-- Madison Square Garden, BAM, The Beacon Theater, Music Hall Of Williamsburg, The Bowery Ballroom, Club Nokia (LA), The Santa
Barbara Bowl, The Chicago Theater, Baby's All Right, The Mercury Lounge, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (SF), Pickathon (Portland)

As a teacher, Indigo's method has, at it's core, a commitment to the idea of teaching a man to fish rather than giving him a fish, and every student, regardless of age or experience will be taught to understand, first and foremost, how music works, so that he or she comes away, not only with the skills to play the material covered in the lessons, but, eventually, the ability to teach themselves any other material they're interested in.

With an emphasis on ear training, her natural approach to learning theory, makes even the most wary or challenged student understand with ease, and find pleasure in the process of learning. Rote memorization is eliminated and replaced by a deep understanding, which grows naturally, while technique improves alongside it. Students quickly find themselves able to play, sing and understand things they'd previously only dreamed of.

These building blocks of music are the same regardless of the style of music you're interested in, but technique will be tailored to your specific interests, and from the start, a portion of each lesson will be devoted to learning the material of your choice.

Indigo also specializes in coaching songwriters, and can, in a gentle and non-invasive way, help to guide you through the process of both mastering craft, and establishing your own individual voice as a writer.

It's hard to imagine a better guitar instructor than Indigo.
As an aspiring singer-songwriter, I came to Indigo a few months ago pleading that she teach me the ins and outs of the instrument. I tasked her with this: save me from joining the masses of capo-dependent hopefuls.
Not only does she customize lessons with my goals in mind (ear training, technique, theory), but she breaks down the 'intimidating' concepts in a sneaky way. One day, while practicing, I started to realize her genius! No longer is the guitar a complete mystery to me.
She is easy-going, patient and encouraging.
I look forward to my lessons with Indigo every week. I think of her as a mentor and hope to work with her for a long time.
Needless to say, I highly recommend!! I imagine with her brilliant skills and experience Indigo would make a wonderful teacher for just about anyone!

Indigo was an amazing instructor. I met her at her studio and she was always punctual.

I am a complete beginner to singing and she was very respectful and understanding of this. I typically would make a lot of self deprecating jokes because of how nervous I was, but she would reassure me and continue to train me.

I had to stop taking lessons because I moved away but I would absolutely recommend her to anyone.

I've been teaching voice for eight years and my students have gone on to study at CalArts, La Guardia, The New School, and more. I encourage students to bring in songs they've written themselves! I specialize in Jazz, Pop/Contemporary, Broadway and Choral styles, and have the following tools available: microphones, keyboard, Logic Pro, Spotify for karaoke backing tracks, sheet music.

About Gabbi

I am a professional vocalist and composer, with a BFA and BMus in Jazz Performance, and over 10 years of performance and recording experience internationally, including appearances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center with NY's premiere a cappella ensemble Khorikos, and the Knitting Factory with Brooklyn-based indie band RVBY MY DEAR; as well as commercial voiceover work for major brands. I am taking beginner singing classes with Gabbi and I highly recommend her.
She is nice, fun, organized and patient. But most importantly, after taking 5 lessons with Gabbi I already feel like I am improving.
We typically start a class with warm up exercices and then work on a song. I am french and not always confortable with singing in English, that's why I appreciated when Gabbi suggested we could start with a song in French, which made things easier for me.
