The ukulele is a creative adaptation and redesign of the machete de braga, a small stringed instrument that was introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in August of 1879. The Hawaiian people fell in love with the sound of the instrument and named it “ukulele" because the fingers of the performer dancing around on the neck and strings as a song was played resembled jumping fleas. Ukulele means jumping fleas in the Hawaiian language.

Since the ukulele is related to a European instrument and the guitar from Spain, the relative tuning is the same. It should be tuned a perfect fourth up from a guitar, so the first string is tuned to an A, second string should be tuned to an E, third string will be a C, & the fourth string should be tuned to a G an octave up. Most ukuleles have a fourth string that is an octave above what the normal progression would be of most stringed instruments. If your G string is not tuned an octave up it’s a larger size than the average ukulele G string ...

My impression was Jesse had a cool vibe about him. He's also an amazing musician and worked great with my 10 yr old, and he really knows a lot about music and teaching music. He had no ego. He just wants to make learning a fun and enjoyable experience.

A great instrument to play! And LOTS of fun. You can be up and playing basic ukulele in a very short time, and as you progress, we will add all the rhythmic strums that make the ukulele come alive. The ukulele can cover almost every style of music there is...from traditional Hawaiian music to rock!... and everything in between. Let me show you how to express your inner musician with the ukulele. You will have a blast!

This was my first lesson after playing guitar on and off for 30 years! Steve assessed my playing and immediately homed in on some well established bad habits as well as outlining a plan to fill all the gaps in knowledge I have from never having learned the theory. I can immediately see this is going to be very good for my playing. Very excited, should have done this years ago.

I cater my lessons to the wants and needs of the individual student. Whether it be to be able to play singalongs or do more advanced material, we'll find out what your goals are and then work to achieve those goals and if you want to, we can continue to work and exceed your original goals. I'm well versed in teaching almost every musical genre there is. So let's work together in whatever style you would like to play and set upon achieving those goals.

Jeff was very helpful and encouraging. I had not picked up a guitar in 45 years, but I found myself remembering chords and techniques that I had long forgotten about. Jeff is a very talented guitarist and the lessons are reasonably priced. The 45 minute lesson is a great deal.

Started with Jeff in January 2015 - I had tinkered off & on with guitar for about 50 years, could play a little folky stuff & bluegrass rhythm guitar but not well, never took lessons before and hadn't played much for about 40 years. Jeff started off by hearing what I could do (not much!) and went from there, mainly with rock stuff. He is a walking encyclopedia, patient, unpretentious and I have made a lot of progress and continue to feel better about it every week. I actually am inspired to practice! I would recommend Jeff to anyone who wants to learn. 5 stars!

Fantastic instructor. I've taken other lessons and when you're learning from Matt you can tell that you're learning from a musician. He's unbelievably talented and is able to transfer that ability to his instruction. You learn things on the guitar that only a musician can teach you...things you wouldn't learn anywhere else.

Ukulele is an interesting instrument with a lot of similar characteristics to guitar. I have been playing ukulele for the past year now and it's substantially easier to play and faster to learn then guitar, but you can develop skills that will transfer over to the guitar.

Jeremie met with our daughter and took the time to learn her perspective and talent level and to develop a more individualized approach to working with her. He is incorporating music theory into songwriting. We are super pleased with his beginning work with her!
