Having fun!

Dear Allie, We are so happy to have found you this summer. It is amazing to see Nicholas stay so focused and interested for an hour at the piano. His love of music seems to have grown since we started lessons with you. We really appreciate your capacity to adapt to his needs and to keep him excited. Thanks!

As an active freelance oboist, lessons will include a shared balance between instrumental performance and reed-making technique. Expectations are consistently evaluated and discussed, so as to best match the student's personal and musical goals. Practice material is catered to the individual students needs and interests, of which often focuses on minimizing practice time by learning effective practice strategies. Lessons can be recorded so that the student (and/or parent) can revisit lesson highlights and further analyze the lesson's strengths and struggles.

A Great Learning Experience

Learning with Matt has given me much confidence in my singing. His excellent teaching skills gives me more confidence to perform, audition, and has indeed improved my vocal chords. Aside from just learning how to improve my singing, Matt has really been a great help on providing me information that I needed to know about Musical Theater, which I really appreciate his complete advice. With such a positive attitude, he thoroughly explains how to warm up the voice and pronounce every consonant/vowel. I, myself, can hear the difference when I perform songs as well as my family and friends. He is a tremendous teacher and I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn how to improve their singing and confidence.

Working with Matthew B.

Mr. Matthew B. is a very helpful and knowledgeable instructor. He goes through the passages of each lesson with me, points at the most complex areas and asks me to focus the practice on those when doing exercises. I am pleased to have Mr. Mathew B. as my piano instructor.

Encouraging. Challenging. Exciting. Improvement.

Matt is a great teacher. He has the ability to pinpoint mistakes and correct them with tips and tricks he uses in his own practice. He creates a comfortable and understanding environment, yet still challenging. I look forward to our lessons and I see myself improving every week. Highly recommended!

About Diane

My journey in music began when I was around 5 years old and first heard the children's choir sing in church. My mother used to tell me that I would beg her to let me sing in the choir but she would always have to tell me I wasn't old enough. As soon as I was old enough, she enrolled me in church choir and I've been in it ever since. I have performed with the Rochester symphony orchestra and chorale, Rochester community band, Rochester civic music, church choirs and orchestras, Lake of the Isles community band, and performed Handel's Messiah at Carnegie hall in New York City. I've done some acting and singing in musicals as well. As I got older, I discovered playing the clarinet was fun but never gave up singing. I just did them both. After becoming proficient on ...

Diane was an excellent instructor and I enjoyed her professionalism and patience with my daughter. unfortunately my daughter became dis- interested due to a need for " a personal touch" that only in home or studio practices could provide.
Daniel S. Boston, MA

My goal is to help students forge a positive relationship with the oboe and the experience of making music. I've been playing for over 13 years with 4 years of intensive teaching experience and a conservatory degree.

No two students are the same, so I operate according to each person's goals, whether they're learning for their own enjoyment or planning a career. I'm experienced in a plethora of genres, so whatever you want to do with the oboe, I have the skills, the time and the experience to help you make it happen.

About Daniel

When I started learning oboe at age 10 I was told by my band director that it was going to be too difficult and not worth the trouble. The oboe may be slightly more difficult to start out with than the other instruments, but it is also more rewarding. What it lacks in ease it makes up for in beauty and character. I want to make sure that no one misses out on the joy of this instrument out of intimidation! Having an experienced teacher and reedmaker to help is essential, and I will gladly offer my skills to anyone interested in the instrument at any age or stage of development. With the right instructor, learning the oboe is no more difficult than any other woodwind. I have been the oboe teacher at Camp Encore/Coda for three years and a counselor for many more. During that time I ...

Daniel is a very engaging teacher that makes learning to play the oboe enjoyable. His encouragement made playing the oboe more fulfilling for me than it had ever been in the past with other instructors. He strikes a good balance between constructive criticism and cheerful reward for a job well done. Time in lessons is always well spent and I always walked out feeling like I had made great improvements in just an hour's time. I would highly recommend him!

Dan is wonderful. Let alone the fact that he's amazing at what he does, the way he teaches is so easy and good for whatever level you may be at. I learned with him for a few years at Camp Encore/Coda and then for a little while during the year, so I got to know him really well. He helped my knowledge and skill with the oboe grow immensely. When I started with him, I was not very good at playing, and he gave me the exercises right for me. He is so nice to learn from for he understands what is the best for his student, and he pushes you the right amount so you improve, but don't get stressed out or worried. I didn't think "I'm not good enough" when he gave me something hard for he gave me the tools needed to keep moving forward. Learning from Dan was a really great experience.

Prior to my time at Camp Encore/Coda, my experiences of oboe teachers and been unengaging, boring and most importantly, uninspiring. Dan was such a great contrast to previous old and stale lessons - I actually looked forward to his! He is a thoughtful teacher who aims to teach, but also understand. His work with me on the oboe was hugely beneficial, and fundamentally inspiring. His love for the music and the instrument is at the forefront of his teaching, and he perpetually convinced me of my own. Thank you, Dan!
