One of my favorite instruments to teach-- I often say that my specialty is convincing people that they should play double reed instruments! Generally seen as more of a challenge, double reeds like the oboe can be frustrating for beginners, but don't worry-- I can guide you through any troubles and help you learn this beautiful instrument.
Lessons include a balance among instrumental performance, reed-making, theoretical analysis, and historical context. Lessons are highly structured and flexible to student interest. Expectations for practice and technique are consistent and clear so as to catalyze student growth and productivity. Practice materials and curriculum are catered to individual needs and interest, focusing on the minimization of practice time through objective and effective strategies. Lessons can be recorded.
I can help beginning students on oboe learn the basics.
I like music to be fun! I have played in major symphony orchestras, classical and jazz groups, in costume at Universal Studios and surrounding Orlando area and created my own pop oboe CDs. I like to explore all styles of music including pop, rock, jazz and classical.
I have been playing and teaching oboe for over 35 years. Before I was a public school music teacher, I played oboe and English horn professionally in New York City where I was a member of many Broadway shows. I was the founder and co-artistic director of an award winning chamber group called, The Rosewood Chamber Ensemble, where we had two on-going subscription series. I was a fellow at the Bach Aria Festival and Institute in Stony Brook, NY. While in Arizona, I was principal oboe and English horn with the Sun City Symphony, the Arizona Chamber Ensemble, and have had a private oboe studio teaching many high school students who I have helped prepare and win auditions for regionals and state orchestra.
My teaching style is relaxed, but highly structured. My former students made great advancements with my guidance. However, no advancement can be achieved without the student putting in the necessary time at home to practice their instrument.
I have been playing the oboe for 12 years and private teaching for the past three. I recently earned my Bachelor of Arts in Music at Butler University and am now pursuing a Master in Oboe Performance at UCLA. My students develop a deep appreciation for music and participate in a variety of ensembles. Within the first few lessons, we will establish a learning plan that is specific to your level of playing. We will focus on improvement of technicality while also cultivating musicality.
