Sarah W.

Chicago, IL

I've studied classical voice going on 10 years, and I've been teaching classical voice for 4 years. Whether you are just starting out or trying to fine tune your craft, I can help you achieve your goals.

About Sarah

First of all, thank you for taking a look at my profile! I know you probably have a lot of teachers to choose from on this fabulous website. Here are a few reasons why you should study with me!

1) My experience as a teacher: I have been teaching both privately and at music schools for over 6 years. I have experience teaching private voice lessons and conducting choirs.

2) My experience as a performer: I currently sing and perform in the Chicago area. I know how to prepare you for auditions and performances because I myself am performing and auditioning.

3) My students: Several of m
y students can be seen singing in choirs or performing leading roles theaters in the Chicago area. Also, just this past year, I helped one of my students gain acceptance to ChiArts, a performing arts school that only accepts 10% of its applicants.

4) I make it fun! Here is a quote from one of my reviews:
“Exactly what anyone would need to gain knowledge about the mechanics of singing and she makes it fun, too”

It is my goal to help every one of my students:

1) develop a healthy singing technique that will bring longevity to your career or hobby.

2) learn music efficiently and independently.

3) develop good practice habits.

4) learn basic ear training/sight singing.

If that sounds like something you would like to learn, click the green button on my profile to book lessons with me. If you are not quite ready to book, feel free to ask me a question.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
I've been studying voice for 10 years and teaching consistently for over 6 years. I received my M.M. from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and my B.M. from Wheaton College. Since graduating in 2013, I have been working and performing in the Chicagoland area. Some performance highlights include but are not limited to performing with Light Opera Works, CCPA's production of the Chicago Premier of Daron Hagen's Amelia, and performing with the Grant Park Chorus.

I look forward to working with you!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide books. I expect my student to provide a piano.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in operatic singing. I received my training in opera; however, I also have training and performance experience in musical theater. I believe I am well equipped in several genres.

I've never had any prior singing experience before and was a little nervous at first to be taking these lessons, however even after my first lesson with Sarah I not only felt at ease but also more confident in my voice. Her use of visuals, metaphors, techniques, and explanation of how our vocals work also showed her vast knowledge and experience as well as helped me progress exponentially. She's also just a fun person to learn from, and I always look forward to having a class with her! Awesome teacher, highly recommended!

Studied and performed Italian arias under some excellent voice instructors.

About Eric

I am a professional musician who enjoys helping young people reach their musical goals. I perform regularly as a solo act and play with a band at various hotels in Chicago. I went to Millikin University in Decatur for music where I toured the country and played and sang in the top ensembles. I also studied at the Music Industry Workshop in Chicago for music production and engineering. My goal is to help you learn the songs you love and show you how to make the technical side of music more fun than you ever imagined!

ery productive. I use a custom curriculum that is catered to the needs and desires of the individual. Whether you would like to be a concert pianist, a jazzy horn player, or someone who wants to rock out to your favorite tunes, I have resources and experience to help you reach your goal. After three months you can expect to competently play a couple great songs and have greater fluidity and technique on your instrument.

Marissa V.

Alsip, IL

Opera involves all vocal techniques at once while learning with Opera arias and art songs.

About Marissa

My musical journey started in high school when my algebra teacher saw me in the hallway, grabbed my hand and brought me to the choir room to sign up for The Sound of Music auditions. To this day I cannot believe my math teacher unknowingly sent me straight down a path that I would walk the rest of my life. After The Sound Of Music I never left music. I kept singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When it came to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion and I wanted to make a l
ife of this. When you wake up everyday and the first thing you do is sing at that point there was no other way to live. There I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I found that I am a vocal scientist at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow. Being a vocal scientist, I find it so interesting to know what exactly needs to happen when we sing in order sing in a healthy and beauitful manner.

While I was at Moraine Valley after I firmly choose music I felt I needed more of a diverse program so I can answer any possible music based question. I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education. Their program intensely teaches all the band and orchestral instruments on top general education classes and your major, mine being voice. While I was there I also took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for 11 years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach in every lesson is ear training and or rhythm. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

***Schedule***
This section is updated regularly. I currently have regular open slots and every other week spots available. If you plan on every other week please messege me with the ask a question feature to see when those times are. Thank you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the studio room, electric piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide literature and a music stand while the students should have a full length keyboard and or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I teach rhythm, sight singing and ear training, general musical terms, as well as specific vocal techniques.

The reduced rate is PER PERSON. Please contact me to inquire about when these sessions are available if you don't have at least 2 additional people to accompany you.

ATTENTION ALL PUBLIC SPEAKERS!
Are you nervous in front of a crowd?
Is your voice weak?
Do you forget your speeches?
Do you lack self-confidence?
Do you want to command the stage and captivate your audience?

If the answer is "yes" to any of the above, then you need my assistance. I will empower you with the tools you need to deliver the best performance.

I currently have multiple songs in mainstream rotation (under an alias), with over 400 spins per day worldwide and am highly-acclaimed by many jazz, pop, r&b and hip-hop notables. I am also a NESTA certified wellness coach. I have the privilege of being a classically-trained pianist and vocalist, having studied at Sherwood Conservatory of Music, Vandercook College of Music, The Second City, University of Chicago, ETA Performing Arts Center and many other fine institutions.

My five-octave vocal range, impressive whistle-register and fine-tuned ear have afforded me opportunities to work with many popular artists. Additionally, I sing in seven languages(English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Mandarin and Latin) and am adept in aiding my students in overcoming speech impediments and enhancing their own vocal range.

I also specialize in post-surgical voice re-immersion and students with special needs including down syndrome, autism and speech impediments.

My methodology helps students feel comfortable and each session is tailor-made to the student's individual needs.

Children love working with me because I make learning fun and they have a high retention rate of the techniques that I teach them. I am easygoing, funny and offer a minimalistic casual and relaxed environment for everyone.

My adult students have a blast because our lessons feel more like a friendly visit. I pull your potential to the forefront and together we create perfection.

I am excellent at preparing people for public speaking engagements, competitions, showcases and concerts and even help develop a winning show lineup and presentation.

Group classes are also available.

If your voice isn't becoming to you, you should be coming to me!

*** Lesson Details ***
Each lesson is tailor-made to suit the student's individual needs. A custom lesson plan will be made for each student on a case-by-case basis. No instruments are used in my lessons, as I train the voice to be a standalone instrument.

We had a very good first lesson. I had an online class so the only drawback is that there is a little limitation when trying to focus on head and neck placement specific to voice coaching with the distance learning. However Margo was Great! I'm looking forward to our next session.

Melodie F.

Chicago, IL

A Classical Voice, Opera Voice, or Opera Singing student must be at least 12 years old. Singing lessons are appropriate for younger students. Opera Voice lessons are the same as Classical Voice lessons, but with an emphasis on building power and endurance.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your First Singing Lesson______________________________

Singing is good for you. Healthy reasons to take singing lessons include deep breathing, balanced posture, relaxation, and abdominal strength. Additional benefits are confidence enhancement, cultural awareness, emotional expression, memory support, and stress relief. Some people sing to share spiritual joy.

A singing lesson is like a private exercise class. Be prepared to move around, making weird sounds and stupid faces. Dress for physical activity, including appropriate shoes. Keep makeup light enough to touch your face and lips. Don't wear anything that covers your neck. Jewelry should ...

About Melodie

With decades of experience, I approach instruction by blending your aspirations with traditional, yet flexible methods. I work with the paper music and workbooks you already own, and TAILOR THE LESSONS TOWARD PRACTICAL VALUE. On the other hand, I believe I have an ethical responsibility to provide a minimum of classical instruction.

Singing (Singing, Choir, Classical Voice, Opera Voice) – from beginners to advanced
Piano (Piano, Classical Piano) – from beginners to intermediate
Music Theory – from beginners to intermediate
Ear Training – from beginners to intermediate

My singing teac
her specialty is to help singers discover the voices they have. I teach classical technique and SINGING FOR GENERAL HEALTH AND JOY. My piano teacher specialty is teaching SIGHT-READING for fun and education.
------------------
Studio Equipment: small office room with digital piano (Roland KR-7)
Travel Equipment: a pencil, some staff paper, a tuning fork, and hand sanitizer

My teaching studio is a small office in my small apartment near the intersection of Ashland and Chicago in Chicago IL. If you live within one mile of my studio, I might be able to travel to your location for an additional $10 per lesson. An adult singing or voice lesson must be at least 45min duration. Prices: 30min for $25, 45min for $36, 60min for $46, 75min for $55, 90min for $65, 105min for $73, and 120min for $80.

I accept SCHEDULE-AS-YOU-GO lessons, which means each lesson is scheduled on an individual, floating basis, with no standing appointment. I also accept a weekly "recurring" schedule, but not every other week. Repeating lessons must happen every week.

If your budget is very tight and you have no piano or keyboard, I suggest you buy a cheap plastic recorder (one of those flute whistles with finger holes) and sign up for 30min Music Theory lessons, on a Schedule-As-You-Go basis.

You, and all students, must ACCEPT THE STRICT CANCELLATION POLICY. There is no makeup, rescheduling, or refunding of any lessons no-showed or cancelled later than 24hrs prior. Students can provide excuses and request forgiveness for late cancellations, but expect no mercy for no-shows. I don't want to be near anyone who is contagious, so students must always inform me of illness even if it's too late to cancel. Officially, if you have a lesson scheduled in less than 24hrs and you haven't already changed or cancelled it, you are paying for it unless I'm the one that changes it.

In my studio I teach ages 12 and up, private one-on-one lessons only. If I travel to your location, we can negotiate younger ages and group fees. If the student is younger than 18, I must meet a parent/guardian before or at the first lesson in my studio or at your location. If the child's lesson is in my studio, the parent/guardian must see my studio before or at the first lesson. In my studio, there is room for one student and one parent/guardian/friend. There is no room for any additional people. THERE IS NO WAITING AREA, and the office is small.

Keep all FRAGRANCES to a strict minimum. If you wear too much, I'll refuse to teach you.

Be aware there will be one CAT nearby in my studio.

All Singing, Voice, and Choir students should READ YOUR FIRST SINGING LESSON, found on each subject page.

Piano students should have clipped nails, and regular access to a piano, or a keyboard with a minimum of 61 TRADITIONAL SIZE keys, preferably with touch sensitivity, 10-note polyphony, a sustain pedal, and a music stand.

For the first lesson, have an inquisitive mind and any paper music you'd like to work with. If you don't have any paper music we can work with pencil, paper, and staff paper until we decide upon an approach.
