Gina B.

New York, NY

I have alot of techniques to help the speaking voice. It is an instrument like the dancer so it is helped by repetition. I will listen and watch to make sure you are not employing tensions instead of techniques. -tone, vitality, a quick tongue for quick language. How to deal with all kinds of language styles and demands. And the emotional component of being in the center of oneself.

About Gina

(For the summer I will be in New York City and happy to take on students until early August. After that I will only be available to east coast students via Skype or intermittent)

I graduated from Juilliard in dance and pursued modern dance and all sorts of theatre including musicals and music theatre and performing arts. I have taught children and grown ups for many years. I have a strong performing career and love the way teaching keeps me in a giving and learning place.

*** Lesson Details ***
With beginning students in acting I am very laid back and patient and believe strongly that
in the play of games and experiments technique will develop and manifest. As the student becomes more advanced I become more demanding as do the materials. As an acting teacher I have an advanced capacity to take students along all the way to professional and beyond. I am a member of the Actors Studio, the performing unions and studied since childhood at ACT and then all over the world including The National in London.
In Singing and Piano I can be valuable to the beginning level and will want to send them to another teacher as they progress beyond my ability.
In dance I have a wide knowledge and can teach several forms as well as history and materials. In Juilliard I specialized in historical dance of the French Court which is also known as pre-ballet. At present I am studying Tango and other ballroom forms and can teach the beginning levels as well as help choreograph for weddings or events. Of course I can also teach Ballet and a many forms of Modern Dance.
In Visual Arts I can teach Abstract Painting, Installation and Performance Art. I have taught children and adults and have a way of bringing the body's expression into the act of making visual art that I and my students find very successful.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have supplies and space. Visual Art students need to contribute to materials by finding or purchasing whatever they like and adding to the mix. My students are welcome to use what I have here and I am always adding materials. Many people throw away materials that are perfectly good for art making so keep your eyes open and you'll find all kinds of good things. Visual Art students need to book a 2 hour minimum and I will lower the price if you just let me know you need it.

*** Travel Equipment ***
just a space to work in - we can create a work space out of any space.

*** Specialties ***
In dance I teach classical ballet principles for beginners or those who are returning and want to work carefully and privately. I teach from the tradition of Alfredo Corvino's principles of relationship to organic forms and structures for sound development. I studied with Mr Corvino for years and continue to study with Ernesta Corvino.
For acting I teach a combination of classical acting technique with American sense memory and relaxation skills. I am well versed in the teachings of Lee Strasberg and then spent time in London to 'fill in the cracks' of my training with analytical skills as well as the various european influences that the Royal National embrace.
I teach creative discovery in combination with classical devices so the student can discover their own artistry while learning actual classical devices for accomplishing specific goals.

Beyond expectations

From our first phone call, Gina became invested in my dance journey. From modern dance, to ballet and contemporary, Gina has guided me into a new world of performance and dance. Outside of our scheduled lessons, we are loosely collaborating on a creative project - something I thought was years away until I met Gina. She taught me tactical dance fundamentals while also helping me navigate the dance and theater scene in NYC. (with which she is very connected) The best thing for me was her flexibility with the learning process. She encourages everyone to make their own journey, never forcing too much structure but always being reliable. I look forward to continuing this journey. Thank you!

Gina provides a safe, constructive, playful, supportive, and judgement-free environment to explore and improve in.

I have been taking singing lessons with Gina for several months now. I have always been extremely self conscious of my voice but it's something I've always wanted to conquer. Gina has done a really nice job providing a safe, constructive, playful, supportive, and judgement-free environment to explore and improve in. I always appreciate how flexible she is with scheduling, as my hours are sometimes hard to predict. I really look forward to our time together. It's very therapeutic.

Vocal technique for the speaking voice. Improve your public speaking, speech for acting on stage or screen, pronunciation and projection and get confidence in front of an audience.

About Liza

I have been professionally singing and taking voice lessons since the age of 9! I went through various styles in my love and performance of music, starting with the Beatles, Aretha Franklin and all of Motown, Jazz (Ella Fitzgerald), R&B, and Classical/Opera (starting when I was in high school and attending Interlochen Arts Camp)...

Having received a Bachelor's of Music in Voice (Music Theatre Performance) from NYU, I stayed in NYC after graduation performing in musical theatre and theatre, mostly in the city.

In 2009, I decided to apply to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts,
with the intent to broaden my range of skill and opportunity as a performer, but also with the intention to teach, with the higher degree strengthening this possibility. I began to teach voice lessons to fellow students while at LAMDA. When I returned to NYC, I began to build my own voice studio in of post-graduate students and adults looking to further develop their vocal practice or begin a vocal practice. I found that in my vocal lessons, I was using physical exercises as for the actor, to incorporate in my private teaching method. I believe in doing, not only watching and observing. This, in conjunction with movement and full-body execution, opens the student vocally and emotionally. I chose to go to LAMDA because the classical training and approach to theatre training in England is extremely physical. They work from the outside in, and I find that the language of the body is universal to students of any intellectual capacity, and I strive to bring this into my approach in any type of teaching format!

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach voice lessons to adults and young students who are beginning their vocal training practice, as well as those who are accomplished singers and performers and want to take their singing and performance to the next level! I use my skills as an accomplished vocalist and teacher to empower my students to find their own voice and learn to express a story through song. I enable my students to hone their craft and find their own style of expression through the exploration of music in a multitude of genres and cultures.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a Stuyvesant style piano in my home studio. I also have a vast collection of repertoire.

Singing Pop/Rock/R&B

I plan to continuing to seeing her through the future and highly recommend her to anyone looking to improve their vocal skills.

Liza is an amazing teacher! My fiance bought me singing lessons for my birthday with Liza and I was a complete beginner. She made me feel so comfortable and made our lessons so much fun. I feel like I learned so much and improved in only 5 lessons. I would absolutely recommend her - she is very talented and knowledgeable. Thank you Liza!

My daughter had a wonderful experience working with Liza. At 10 years old, with no prior acting experience, Liza helped her prepare for a monologue for a school audition. She was patient and fun and exposed her to a variety of great monologue options. Liza has a really sweet way of making kids feel special and proud and I would highly recommend her as an acting/singing coach!

My first vocal teacher and the best!

Ms. Rachel was an amazing vocal teacher! We would always start off with simple and fun warm-ups, breathing techniques, and would practice singing songs from musicals. My first couple lessons she taught me how to sing I Feel Pretty from West Side Story and we both had so much fun with it! After a little while we learned Cups from Pitch Perfect and then we got into the Vaccai book and I learned a couple songs from there. Overall Ms. Rachel was the best! She even offered to Skype a lesson with me since she moved. She cared about me and always helped me improve my voice in every way she could. I love her!

Alex H.

Brooklyn, NY

About Alex

Having grown up with a father who ran a guitar shop and a professional singer for a mother, music was just another language to communicate with in our house. Learning to speak through music (and vice versa) taught me how to focus and develop new skills, which helped me in school with anything new that I have ever had to learn.

In 5th grade I started playing bass guitar at home, trombone in the school music program, and private lessons for piano. This got me exposed to a uniquely wide range of music very early on.

When I was a teenager, I was honored to be the youngest person to study a
t Victor Wooten's first bass/nature camp in 2000, a star-studded week long master class with some of the world's most decorated musicians in Montgomery Bell State Park outside of Nashville. I played in local bands in the Berkshires, wrote music for Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, and sang such roles as Valjean in Les Miserables and John Wilkes Booth in Assassins, as well played in orchestras across the county. I performed as both a bass player and a vocalist in the Massachusetts All-State Jazz Ensemble (separate years, of course!)

I moved to New York to get a degree in Theater as a singer and actor. Since then I've been fortunate enough to work in NY orchestras, cabarets, theater and national TV, tour the world with a variety of artists, work as a session musician and play with some of the best musicians in town.

Music has been a life-directing guide for me; from the wonder of discovery to the mastery of new and exciting techniques, music has always been a sort of way for us to communicate intimately, yet on a universal scale. To pass the same experience on to others is such a gift, and one I value greatly.

"When words fail, music speaks."

So, let's start talking!
