I love playing and practicing classical guitar - I probably spend more time on it than any other particular style. I am mainly self-taught in this genre, so I can definitely get you started, but I wouldn't take on more advanced students.
Send me a message - I know some fantastic classical virtuosos in NYC if you need advanced training!
I'm Mike, and I'm thrilled to be part of the TakeLessons team. I first picked up the guitar at the age of 5, and have never looked back! I began formal Jazz training in high school and continued studying guitar and composition at Oberlin College and Wesleyan University. After graduating, I played Organ Trio and small combo jazz in LA, studied Brazilian and African percussion, and went to Japan to study Shamisen and Taiko drumming. I've been playing in various groups since arriving in NYC in 2005, and have recently been working on engineering and composing for film. My strength lies in my versatility - I love music of all kinds. Whether it's Soul, Samba, or Salsa, Rock, Pop or Hip Hop, I am very good at communicating the mechanics of music so that my students not only learn to play, but
I can help you make this most fascinating and mysterious instrument your own! When you feel comfortable playing, you practice more, learn more, and have more fun. Lessons focus on finding easy ways to get around a guitar, learning songs you like, and understanding music theory through familiar examples. I teach improvisation as a natural outcome of listening, singing and building a strong connection to melody. I have studied and played guitar from the age of 8. My father was a professional bassist; in recent years I have followed his lead and now am playing jazz and orchestral double bass (for which studying guitar was an excellent preparation.) I play and teach both acoustic and electric guitar in the following styles: Classical, folk, rock/blues, jazz, bossa nova. I studied ...
I've been teaching 20 years. Classical Guitar technique is the foundation for most fingerpicking styles. Exploring the repertoire of Bach, the classic guitar composers - Sor, Guliani, Carcassi and learning how to arrange melodies for the guitar even if not written for guitar are some of the goals when I teach this style. My specialty is Brazilian Guitar and I have available vast repertoire of guitar music for the "Classical Guitar" plus I've explored the works of Piazolla and Leo Brouwer to name 2 guitarists. For Beginners we begin with 2 fingers, basic reading, getting a feel for your instrument, all made fun through the use of melodic material from various sources, sometimes pop tunes chosen by the student

We'll focus on the fundamentals of good right- and left-hand technique through a mix of pieces and etudes. You'll learn to read standard notation, but my focus is on getting you actually playing music. We'll also talk about issues of muscle tension and musicality.
I am a composer, guitarist, arranger and songwriter located in Brooklyn. I completed an M.M. in Composition at the Yale School of Music last May, and have taught extensively for the past six years in a variety of settings, including teaching guitar, musicianship, and running rock bands in public elementary and high schools in San Francisco and New Haven, teaching private composition lessons and working as a teaching assistant for electronic music courses at Yale, and teaching in several music schools and my own private guitar studio in San Francisco. In addition to my teaching work, I've maintained a busy schedule as a composer, guitarist, and organizer. I've twice won composition awards from ASCAP, have had my works performed nationwide, and recently scored a short film by Lee Hirsch, ...
During the past 13 years I've been very fortunate to work with over 150 children and adolescents, of ages 5-18, and adults, up to 81 years old. This experience has allowed plenty of time to work with complete beginners as well as advanced students and groups of various ages. I've taught mostly one on one private lessons but during the past 5 years I have been coaching student bands as well as teaching theory & ear training to small groups. I am proud to say I have successfully prepared students for college auditions, taught children of professional musicians and have led numerous student ensembles in performance.
"A talented and skillful guitarist, Mr Mihas is able to detect subtle bad habits that I'd acquired over the years and remediate them with targeted skill practice and modeling of exemplary technique."

If you are passionate about the guitar & music in general we will get along real well. Whether your interest lies in the electric or classical guitar I can offer a structured program of study based on my experience studying under some of the leading artists of both musical worlds. After completing Classical Guitar studies & a Musicology degree I moved to Boston to study with some of Jazz's greatest musicians and pedagogues. I believe in structuring the course of study and have seen that setting goals makes a huge difference & therefore there are opportunities for student recitals and/or recording sessions several times throughout the year. While in Boston I was a faculty member of the South Shore Conservatory from 2008-2010. In NYC along with my a private studio, I freelance
