Great Teacher

I would highly recommend Jeff as a guitar teacher. I have been taking lessons with him over the last 6 months and my playing has tremendously improved. Jeff has made our lessons fun and he has even helped me work through a song I plan to play at my upcoming wedding. My overall skills have also improved and I have really enjoyed playing the guitar again after a long time of not playing or taking lessons.Jeff is also very prompt and easy to communicate with and very flexible in terms of working around my schedule. Again, I would highly recommend Jeff if you're looking for a great guitar teacher. He will definitely help improve your skills in a short period of time.
Mike B. Brooklyn, NY

I love playing and practicing classical guitar - I probably spend more time on it than any other particular style. I am mainly self-taught in this genre, so I can definitely get you started, but I wouldn't take on more advanced students.
Send me a message - I know some fantastic classical virtuosos in NYC if you need advanced training!

About Mike

I'm Mike, and I'm thrilled to be part of the TakeLessons team. I first picked up the guitar at the age of 5, and have never looked back! I began formal Jazz training in high school and continued studying guitar and composition at Oberlin College and Wesleyan University. After graduating, I played Organ Trio and small combo jazz in LA, studied Brazilian and African percussion, and went to Japan to study Shamisen and Taiko drumming. I've been playing in various groups since arriving in NYC in 2005, and have recently been working on engineering and composing for film. My strength lies in my versatility - I love music of all kinds. Whether it's Soul, Samba, or Salsa, Rock, Pop or Hip Hop, I am very good at communicating the mechanics of music so that my students not only learn to play, but

Mike you are awesome. I have learned different techniques both strumming and finger picking. An easy going teacher who is dedicated to his students and music. Always breaks down the music and gives options in chords, strumming and picking. Thanks.

Awesome teacher!

Mike is engaging and wonderful to work with. He is task oriented. After just a month I have learned chords to three different songs and can perform two of them. He does not shy away from different music. He allows you to take your time and always has various techniques of showing you how to learn the instrument. His time is flexible and works with your schedule as well.

About Stephanie

I can help you make this most fascinating and mysterious instrument your own! When you feel comfortable playing, you practice more, learn more, and have more fun. Lessons focus on finding easy ways to get around a guitar, learning songs you like, and understanding music theory through familiar examples. I teach improvisation as a natural outcome of listening, singing and building a strong connection to melody. I have studied and played guitar from the age of 8. My father was a professional bassist; in recent years I have followed his lead and now am playing jazz and orchestral double bass (for which studying guitar was an excellent preparation.) I play and teach both acoustic and electric guitar in the following styles: Classical, folk, rock/blues, jazz, bossa nova. I studied ...

As an adult learner, coming at this late in life, Stephanie has been the perfect instructor for me. First of all, I just love the way she talks about the instrument. It was kind of mesmerizing - at our first lesson, she picked up the old beat up guitar I had inherited from my father and accurately guessed it's origin based on the sound; "a lovely dry tone". She allowed me to choose the direction I wanted to go in and never made me feel like the rank beginner that I was. She challenges you while at the same time appreciating the depth of a simple strum. I'm learning to read music because of Stephanie! Not because she insisted, just because I thought I'd like to try. This is thrilling to me. I can't believe my good fortune that I came on this site and discovered her.

Billy N. Brooklyn, NY

I've been teaching 20 years. Classical Guitar technique is the foundation for most fingerpicking styles. Exploring the repertoire of Bach, the classic guitar composers - Sor, Guliani, Carcassi and learning how to arrange melodies for the guitar even if not written for guitar are some of the goals when I teach this style. My specialty is Brazilian Guitar and I have available vast repertoire of guitar music for the "Classical Guitar" plus I've explored the works of Piazolla and Leo Brouwer to name 2 guitarists. For Beginners we begin with 2 fingers, basic reading, getting a feel for your instrument, all made fun through the use of melodic material from various sources, sometimes pop tunes chosen by the student

I cannot recommend Billy enough. I studied jazz improvisation with Billy for three years, and later returned to study Brazilian guitar and Piedmont-style finger picking with him. I had been playing for more than twenty years when I started studying with him and he not only helped me improve my playing technically and creatively (on electric and nylon stringed guitars) but also expanded my knowledge of theory and helped me develop new approaches to composing and arranging. I am still working with the material he gave me and take lessons from him whenever my schedule allows.

I took Brazilian guitar lessons from Billy for several years. His method focuses on absorbing the many rhythms of Brazil and translating them from percussion instruments to the guitar. Much of his effort is devoted on achieving the elusive Brazilian swing, which non Brazilians need to learn. Billy is excellent in breaking down the rhythms and explaining them. He even has a book out on his method. He covers various Brazilian genres: choro, bossa nova, samba, baiao and more.
Billy also is an accomplished jazz, classical and flamenco guitarist with a thorough understanding of harmony and improvisation. He is very patient and has years of teaching and performance experience. You will be lucky to study with him!

I took guitar lessons from Billy for over 10 years. He is an outstanding teacher who is challenging but at the same time very patient. We managed to go through a very extensive repertoire of pieces ranging from the many Brazilian styles to Latin music and Flamenco. Not only is he a skilled and talented performer but his love and enthusiasm for teaching coupled with his extensive knowledge makes him the perfect choice for an instructor. For many years I took lessons at home with Billy but due to my hectic schedule we switched to Skype lessons. I was pleasantly surprised to find out the quality of the lessons was not affected in any way.

We'll focus on the fundamentals of good right- and left-hand technique through a mix of pieces and etudes. You'll learn to read standard notation, but my focus is on getting you actually playing music. We'll also talk about issues of muscle tension and musicality.

About Brendon

I am a composer, guitarist, arranger and songwriter located in Brooklyn. I completed an M.M. in Composition at the Yale School of Music last May, and have taught extensively for the past six years in a variety of settings, including teaching guitar, musicianship, and running rock bands in public elementary and high schools in San Francisco and New Haven, teaching private composition lessons and working as a teaching assistant for electronic music courses at Yale, and teaching in several music schools and my own private guitar studio in San Francisco. In addition to my teaching work, I've maintained a busy schedule as a composer, guitarist, and organizer. I've twice won composition awards from ASCAP, have had my works performed nationwide, and recently scored a short film by Lee Hirsch, ...

I've had a great experience working with Brendon. He's been reliable, and explains things very well. He's been able to tailor the lesson plan to exactly what I need. I am much further ahead than I expected to be at this point, thanks to him.I give him the highest recommendation.
Stelios M. Brooklyn, NY

During the past 13 years I've been very fortunate to work with over 150 children and adolescents, of ages 5-18, and adults, up to 81 years old. This experience has allowed plenty of time to work with complete beginners as well as advanced students and groups of various ages. I've taught mostly one on one private lessons but during the past 5 years I have been coaching student bands as well as teaching theory & ear training to small groups. I am proud to say I have successfully prepared students for college auditions, taught children of professional musicians and have led numerous student ensembles in performance.

About Stelios

Whether your interest lies in the electric or classical guitar I can offer a structured program of study based on my experience studying under some of the leading artists of both musical worlds. After completing Classical Guitar studies & a Musicology degree I moved to Boston to study with some of Jazz's greatest musicians and pedagogues. Guitar teachers are a dime a dozen.

Stelios is one in a million.

Next to every review of a teacher you'll see
a rating of 1-to-5 stars. For me Stelios gets a 10.

I'm always sorry when my lesson with him ends.
Each time he impresses me more. And each
time I feel I've improved. He's got me playing
classical pieces I never thought I could play.
I'm amazed at how much he knows and how
beautifully he plays. And any style.

What a talent. What s nice guy. And what
a teacher.

If he's got slot open I recommend you grab it.

You won't find better.
