You already enjoy listening to music, now it's t
ime to enjoy making it!

***About Me***
I've appeared on recordings with dozens of rock, pop, jazz, and classical groups, and perform on a variety of instruments and styles throughout the Boston area.

I listen to and play all kinds of music from Beethoven to Stravinsky, Arcade Fire to Beyonce, James Brown to Snoop Dogg/Lion. I have had the pleasure to share the stage with rockers Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), and jazz greats Maynard Ferguson, Jimmie Lunceford, Conrad Herwig, "Blue" Lou Marini, and Jeff Coffin (Flecktones).

I've played acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, violin, cello, and string bass drums. Some of my favorite recent projects have been:
-Quilty (Pavement-style hard rock band)
-The Nevermind Orchestra (brass band that covers Nirvana tunes)
-Chill Sons (my own band for which I write songs, play guitar, and sing)
-Manhattan Symphonie (an entertaining symphony orchestra featuring soloists on piano, violin, saw, urdu, and tap shoes)

It is a treat to share music with others, and my lessons are fun, challenging, and engaging.

Thanks for stopping by to look at my profile! Let's hang out and do music things.

Chuck is very patient and very knowledgeable, and he has a way to let the kids to absorb quickly. My son can already play 30 short songs on Saxophone and Guitar after only 5 lessons.

Chuck was on time, professional and my son really enjoyed his first lesson. Chuck was able to quickly figure out where my son was in the learning process so that they could get started right away. Excellent teacher!

Chuck was terrific with both my five year old son learning to play for the first time and my more experienced husband learning to refine his skills and progress further with theory. He is excellent with children and my son keeps asking if he can come everyday.

Stephanie M.

Boston, MA

Each lesson includes studies of fundamental techniques, ear training, and music history in order to facilitate the development of a whole musician.

About Stephanie

Hello, and thank you for your interest!

My name is Stephanie, I am a teaching-artist from El Paso, Texas. I currently reside, perform and teach in the Boston and greater Boston area.

I am a recent graduate of The New England Conservatory of Music with my Masters in Saxophone Performance. I received my Bacherlors in Music Education from New Mexico State University.

“A teaching artist, by definition, is a two-career professional: a working artist and a working educator. As a working artist is they are involved in an ongoing process of discovery, problem solving, discipline and refineme
nt of skills in their discipline. As a working educator, it is essential that the artist is also developing a knowledge base and skills to be an effective partner in education. Achieving a meaningful balance between these two professions, whereby one feeds the other, is an ongoing process that requires a deepening awareness for the teaching artist of what their teaching brings to their art and what their art teaches them about learning.”

I am devoted and dedicated to helping find each of my students strengths, weaknesses and style of learning. Once I have identified these traits, I am able to develop lessons and repertoire that helps each students become the most efficient learner and best musician they can be.

I pride myself in creating a fun and safe learning environment in which I establish a firm musical foundation for my students. Lessons include: scales, etudes, articulation, dynamic and sight reading exercises, standard saxophone repertoire, recording and analyzing performances, saxophone/music history lessons, and exploration of the sounds, genres and artists of the saxophone.

Simultaneously, my students cultivate many other skills while learning how to play saxophone. Students enhance their fine motor skills and ability to memorize, students increase their overall self-confidence and become self-sufficient and creative problem solvers. I am passionate about educating and empowering my students and I enjoy connecting with a wide array of musicians of all ages, playing levels and backgrounds.

Feel free to contact me to inquire about lessons, I hope to hear from you soon!

I went to New England Conservatory with Stephanie, and I have to say that she is one of the most supportive colleges I have ever met. She is extremely dedicated to her students, even to the point that even in social settings she will be texting her students words of encouragement and asking about their progress. She has an incredible work ethic and an infectiously positive attitude.

I hired Stephanie to work with me at Lynn Middle School as a woodwind technician for one semester, Spring 2012. Stephanie was always punctual, organized, and outstanding with the kids. She immediately set up a fun and safe environment for them to learn. Her work was excellent. We were preparing for our district Music Performance Assessment Festival and received Superior ratings. I have no doubt we owe part of that rating to her hard work. She really goes above and beyond, on one occasion I had to miss my afternoon classes for jury duty and she ran rehearsal without any problems. I wish we still had Stephanie in our district. I highly recommend her.

Tegan S.

Somerville, MA

Must supply own instrument -- I would be willing to help find a beginner sax. 15+ years experience.

Beginner saxophonists will learn to read music, and begin by learning the parts of the instrument, and the fundamentals of breathing and posture, with simple songs soon to follow.

Intermediate saxophonists will expand their repertoire and technique, and begin work on important orchestral excerpts and solos, with an eye towards competition. The rest of the sax family may begin to be explored at this point.

Advanced saxophonists will continue to polish technique and expanding their repertoire, with a focus towards audition preparation and competition. Further work in multi-sax fluency will be completed.

About Tegan

I have taught private instruction and group instruction in such varied subjects as Music Theory/Ear Training, Woodwinds, and Crochet. I completed a B.A. of Music at University of Massachusetts - Boston, in August, 2014. As a working musician, I currently perform oboe with the Brockton Symphony Orchestra (Dir. James Orent) and the University of Massachusetts - Boston Chamber Orchestra (Dir. Dr. Jon C. Mitchell). I have most recently studied under Dr. Emilian Badea in both Oboe and Accordion, with Bulent Guneralp in Piano and Voice, and with Dr. David Patterson for Music Theory, Ear Training, Ar
rangement and Composition. Music has been an important part of my life for over 20 years.

I have also been sewing and crafting for over 20 years, and have done custom corsetry and Theatrical Costuming in addition to Knitting, Crocheting, Tatting, and Needle-pointing.

For information regarding my approach to instruction of a specific subject, please click on the name of the subject listed above for a full description.

As I do not have access to a car, I prefer that students come to my home studio in Somerville, or that they be within public transit options.

N.B. I own both a cat and a dog, so for those with allergies, it might be best to meet in your own home.

I usually avoid doing reviews -- takes time I don't have. But I was very impressed with Tegan's approach with my son, which I witnessed in its entirety, along with her availability (easy to accommodate & then tweak again our schedule this summer, which was key). She's very patient while being precise, which is just what Paul -- who has ADHD & Asperger's, which means he's easily distracted -- needs. It was a good idea to make the first lesson a combined hour (to learn how to care for the instrument, moisten the reed, posture, where hands should be, forming the mouth, etc.). She knows the book Paul's school uses She was waiting for us with a parking pass (essential in Somerville). I feel really good about the prospect of Paul being able to "catch up" this summer with the first year school year instruction he missed out, given Tegan's focus & attention. One possible drawback for some others -- vs. my son & me, who value substance (where Tegan is outstanding) over appearances -- might be that Tegan's apartment is more like an early '70's hippie pad (cramped un-air-conditioned attic 3rd floor walk-up, with no place for me to wait during my son's lesson except scrunched up against an eave in the studio/ living room, 1 foot from their chairs, petting the friendly dog) than a more traditional dedicated studio in the home, as his piano teacher has.

Great experience, Tegen is a good explainer and a good improviser in sewing, looking for fitting solutions if she doesn't already know them. Models how to figure out for yourself in the future.

Daniel C.

Newton Center, MA

I know how to play the saxophone and the basic techniques from it, since I've been playing the saxo for 8 years. It's easier than the Clarinet and very similar, so I was able to dominate it fast. Breathing, fingering and basic technique will be tough and will study with some basic Saxophone Methods.

About Daniel

I'm a professional clarinet and saxophon player. I've been teaching alumni from the ages of 8 and 9 to teenagers and adults since 2006. Started my career when I was 8 as a Clarinet Performer, and the saxophone since I was 20.
I've perform several times in many different positions:
Played first clarinet with Filarmonia Orchestra playing "The nutcracker" for 5 years.
Played as Concertino (Main clarinet) in El Hatillo's Concert Band for 10 years.
Performed in different theaters playing chamber music with several musicians.
I'm very enthusiastic and motivated to work with new people, no matte
r the age, to teach them what I've learned during my 20 years of experience!

Daniel is one of the greatest teachers there would be in the field he performs and the instrument he plays. Among his greatest traits are being a talented clarinetist and saxophonist, a great person, a dedicated professional and an amazing teacher. I would recommend Daniel for any position he would aspire and apply for.

Ryan G.

Allston, MA

Do you want to become a star? Then take lessons with me!

I've been playing Saxophone for 10 years now. Ranging from Funk Bands, to Big-bands, Musical Pits, Rock/Jazz/Pop Studio sessions etc.

I cannot count the amount of teachers I have had. However, I consider that my most influential teacher for saxophone to be Kevin Garren, pro·té·gé of the great Eric Marienthal. He whipped me into shape and now I can do the same for you.

About Ryan

Currently, Ryan is a Senior studying at Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship. He plays most woodwind instruments & keyboard, but primarily saxophone/flute.

Ryan's approach to teaching is rather unconventional. As he doesnt go by textbooks or run through a predetermined Curriculum. He seems to have a natural feeling for music backed by a solid knowledge of music theory. He is able to convey that in a spontaneous and individual way that keeps learning entertaining and isnt overbearing. It's been fun and efficient.
