Soraya B.

San Francisco, CA

I have been teaching guitar for the past 10 years. I really enjoy teaching guitar and seeing my students learning and enjoying it too! I use a book that I really like but of course I add other materials when I think it is suitable for my student. Each student learns differently so I adapt to his learning style and to his needs.

About sadi soraya

About me, I have been playing the guitar for more than 20 years. I studied at the conservatory of Music in Paris. In San Francisco, I studied and played with many great jazz musicians and teachers. I have also studied Theory/ composition, electronic music and voice.
I hold a degree in English literature and currently teaches also at the French American School in San Francisco.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher I expect the best of you but I also know that we all learn differently and at a different path. As a beginner, you will learn to read and play at the same time by learning s
imple melodies and simple chords right away. As an intermediate/ advance, we will take it from where you stopped and will continue to move forward according to your needs and goals. I can also teach the lesson in French.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room/Practice Room, keyboard, amps, guitars, bass, microphone, recording and music notation software

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide music sheets, recordings, if needed, I expect them to have their instrument, recorder to record the lesson if they want to, pencil and eraser. I will sometimes ask them to buy a book if necessary.

*** Specialties ***
My lessons focus first on understanding the instrument by playing simple melodies. Then I applied the theory learnt by learning songs. For more advanced players, I can teach to play solo guitar how to harmonize the melodic note with chords.

Soraya was very patient with my daughters though they didn't practice enough, still she encouraged them and tried adapting her approach to enliven their interest. She's not a clock watcher either and usually went over time to be sure they had a handle on that days lesson.

Soraya is wonderful teacher especially with children. She is understanding and goes at their pace. Children are encouraged to learn and enjoy music. She makes it a fun environment for them to learn but is also a serious teacher. The perfect balance. I would highly recommend Soraya.

Thomas K.

San Francisco, CA

Acoustic, electric, folk, blues, rock, indie, country, or anywhere in between. I've played them all at some point and picked up many tricks along the way that I give to you!

About Thomas

I've been teaching for over 10 years and I have never had more fun with it. I studied classical guitar for ten years earning a bachelor's and a master's degree in music. During my formal education I not only learned music theory, music history, ensemble playing, and composing, but more importantly I learned how to REALLY learn new things. This ability I try to pass on to my students.I love sharing the things I've learned from all of my various experiences whether it be from my classical guitar background or from one of my various pop/rock bands. I am a working musician and I still learn new th
ings every time I go out to play. It could be classical music at weddings, Jazz at clubs, or Rock and Roll at rowdy venues. There's a lesson to be learned from each.

*** Lesson Details ***
Playing and understanding music is easy. The notion that it is only for the gifted and super talented is a lie.Fun is the first priority. Everybody wants to learn different things.  I tailor the lesson to the student and their goals. With guitar or theory/songwriting, each person has an 'ideal' they are striving for (rock guitarist ala Jimmy Page, Acoustic folk ala Bob Dylan, songwriter like Paul Simon, or classical guitarist like Andres Segovia).  I work with students to reach their ideal in a laid back, friendly manner.

I might teach out of a book or make our own book as we go along depending on the student, their experience level, and their goals. Each lesson will stress the important music fundamentals and making things easier. Every lesson and every student is different.  I have students as young as 5 whom I help learn music while they are learning how to read and write.  AND on the other side, I have students like my 81 year old mandolin student who has exciting ideas on how we should perform in our next recitals.Learning music is an investment.  Everyone learns at a different pace. There is no norm.  There is no "place they should be" at after a given time of lessons/practice.  I've had students that stagnated for YEARS and then TAKE OFF musically once they really decided to apply themselves.  If you are the parent of a student the best thing you can do is to be involved. After that, nature will take it's course.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Some amplifiers, spare guitars, and plenty of nick-nacks.

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
I am trained in classical guitar, but of course I've been playing and teaching electric guitar for years in different bands and professional settings. In addition, I am very passionate and knowledgeable about Irish/Celtic music and instruments i.e. Mandolin, Tin/Penny Whistle, Bouzouki

Thomas is an incredible instructor. I've only had 3 lessons so far and I already feel like I've improved my abilities so much. He not only has mastery of the instrument and of music, but best of all for students, he understands how to teach it well.

Absolutely perfect!

Tom is truly a great teacher. He has tailored his approach to my unique needs-as an accomplished musician learning his 6th instrument, his teaching approach reminds me of things I ought to remember while playing any instrument, and music in general. And my lessons are tons of fun! He has a great knowledge of all the different approaches to the guitar and other stringed instruments which really fits in to what I am most interested in- how to get a particular sound for any given piece of music for the guitar. I'm extremely happy about having found tom to be my teacher.

Great teacher for my 7yr old!

Thomas is great with my 7-year old son. He has been extremely patient with him. He balances out the session with teaching and getting to know him at the same time. He does not rush through the lesson and makes him feel at ease with the guitar. He was only practicing with Thomas for a year and built enough courage and experience playing the guitar that he performed at his school's end-of-the-year talent show and did an amazing job thanks to Thomas! I was impressed!

Thomas H.

San Francisco, CA

My goal is to teach you how to completely understand the guitar from top to bottom. I`ve been playing the guitar for over 42 years and love to I play jazz, blues, rock & classical.

About Thomas

Hello!
My approach to guitar instruction is to teach the student to find where every note, chord, and scale is located anywhere on the neck of the guitar. I`ll teach the student how to build chords and understand exactly what you are playing by reading music and charts, and learning the proper chord theory. I believe a strong student can play solo, improvise, read and play beautiful guitar pieces. I'll teach you how to play jazz, cut up the blues, rock out, play rhythm and lead, while playing chord solos, putting melodies over chords, or study simple classical pieces.

I`m a well mannered,
soft spoken, easy going mature gentleman. I`ve taught lessons over the years to students from all walks of life. I enjoy teaching and watching people develop their skills and find enjoyment out of music. I`m a very patient teacher. Among my students, I've taught my daughter to play piano and sing at a very young age. She has performed and instructed professionally and internationally, and now runs a dance company abroad.

For beginners, I can start you out with very easy chords to play using only 2 or 3 fingers. While you learn chord structure and reading music, we will learn open string chords, strumming, playing scales and continuing on from there. Intermediate and advance players will learn to implement more chords into your playing, soloing, and reading more advanced pieces.

I`m also a songwriter and have written many songs over the years both instrumental and vocal, so I can help students with songwriting techniques, helping to complete and arrange any songs you've written.

I have guitars, amps, keyboard, audio/video recorder, and plenty of books from which to study. All you need to bring is your enthusiasm!

Thanks for reading my profile, and have a wonderful day.

Tom and I have had 2 sessions together now and I feel great about how they have gone. I have taken a few guitar lessons in the past with another instructor and he just does not compair to Tom's style of instruction. What I mean by that is Tom was able to assess exactly where my skill level, understanding, and rate of retension rather quickly apposed to waisting my time we were able to start exactly where I needed to. From there, I was astonished with how much knowledge Tom has of music theory and his skill of explaining it each step of the way. I'm excited to continue my lesssons with him! I already feel I'm going to be exonentially better in no time at all :)

Tom is a practical teacher, and understands what you need to work on. I've learned to put a lot of my Jazz Theory immediately into practice. Since working with Tom he's taught me to:

Play from lead sheets
Play turnarounds
Find harmonic balance with closed chords in the right playing range
Play in a variety of styles including pop, blues, swing, bossa nova, and bop
Improvise on scales
Sing and play at the same time

And most of all, he guided me into the huge world of jazz music. Making sure that you're learning the right stuff out of the tons of information out there is crucial--and Tom helped me find that. Also, his patience for my learning speed couldn't be more appreciated. Thanks Tom!

Aidan C.

San Francisco, CA

About Aidan

I have been playing guitar since I was 10 and loving music my whole life. I have been in numerous rock bands, high-school jazz band, classical guitar duos, trios, chamber ensembles, and even played mandolin in a bluegrass band. I received my Bachelor of Music at Guilford College as a student of Kami Rowan. During my third year of study there, I was nominated for the Guilford College Art Award as the outstanding student and performer in the music department. In February of 2010, I had the honor of being a member of the guitar orchestra during a performance of Shingo Fuji’s Concierto de los Ange
les, alongside soloist, Grammy winner, William Kanengiser. I recently completed my Master of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music where I studied with Jason Vieaux. There I was awarded the Rosalia Ablan Memorial Prize for my accomplishments on the guitar. In addition to guitar performance, I have studied music theory, jazz theory, and pedagogy extensively. I am a native of San Francisco and have been teaching privately since 2007. No matter what a student's interests are, I can give them a rock solid foundation in technique, performance, reading, and theory.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I make it a priority to create an easy-going, non-intimidating environment, so that you, the student, can focus on your goals and learning, approach music at your own pace, and really look forward to coming in to lessons. Whether you are interested in electric, steel-string, or classical, Metallica, Mozart, or anything in between, I can teach you technique, musicianship skills, and songs that fit your personal interests.
For beginning students I like to teach a mixture of basic theory, music-reading, and chords/scales. Soon after, the student can begin to bring in songs that s/he is interested in, and I can start to build lessons around specific styles/pieces. I teach all levels and all ages, and I would love to share my passion and knowledge with you, and gain you skill and confidence on the guitar, as well as a deep understanding of music.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room w/ seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical guitar, and am very familiar with the teachings of Aaron Shearer. His methods and practices provide the basis for how I teach technique and how i approach learning pieces. I also supplement his ideas with those of Pepe Romero, William Kanengiser, and Scott Tenant (particularly their views on technique).
I am also more than comfortable teaching pop/rock guitar on steel-string or electric, and TAB-ing/teaching songs the student brings in. Whether the student prefers classical or popular s/he will get a good foundation in music theory and music reading.

Judy G.

San Mateo, CA

Beginner to Advanced guitar. This is my main instrument and this is my main focus for teaching. I have my own method and use books by Hal-Leonard for music reading.

About Judy

Greetings Groovy Guitar Student!
Thanks for checking out my lessons. My name is Judy G., aka Groovy Judy. I'm a guitarist, singer, songwriter and performer. I've been playing guitar for 35+ and teaching private and group lessons for 10 years. I have also taught ukelele, some voice, and electric bass. ***Please note - I'm located on the Peninsula, so the areas I serve are: Millbrae, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos, Redwood City, Atherton & Menlo Park.***

I work with a lot of kids (as well as adults) and beginners. I'm extremely patient, and I enjoy getting brand n
ew guitarists up and running with proper techniques and good habits. My teaching style/philosophy is to get my students playing guitar as soon as possible in an easy and fun way. I focus on basics such as tuning, rhythm, proper pick technique, strumming, reading guitar tab and/or sheet music, and playing songs. I tailor my lessons to the student so it's fun for both of us.  I work with beginners and immediate/advanced guitarists. Basically anyone that wants to learn how to play or brush up and enhance their skills. Styles I teach are: rock (classic, indie, punk) folk, pop, reggae/ska funk, blues, r&b, country, some finger-picking, and a bit of classical. I can teach you any song you want to play whether it's rap, rock hip-hop or a piano piece. I will find a way to do it and make it fun. :-)

My style is easy going, but not lackadaisical. I take teaching seriously and do my best to make the student feel comfortable. I give my students weekly assignments that I ask them to complete. However, if a student doesn't work on their assignment, I don't criticize or condemn them. I go over the assignment with them and gently remind them to play and work on the materials I've given.

I love teaching, music, and sharing my gifts with others.

Thanks and I look forward to working with you!
Cheers,
Judy G. aka Groovy Judy
