Paul B.

Branford, CT

About Paul

Paul is a guitarist/songwriter/educator from Branford, CT. He began playing the guitar at age 13 with a strong background in piano. He performed and recorded with bands in high school, during which time he was influenced by a wide variety of musical artists and styles, including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Pink Floyd.

Paul enrolled at Boston's Berklee College of Music in the fall of 1994 and discovered a love for jazz, particularly guitarists such as Joe Pass and Tal Farlow and arrangers Nelson Riddle and Gil Evans. At Berklee, Paul continued to study the g
uitar while working toward a Bachelor of Music degree in Contemporary Writing and Production, which he received in 1998.

After graduating, Paul remained in Boston for several years performing and teaching private guitar lessons. He developed a hands-on, practical instruction method that teaches music fundamentals, theory and improvisation through playing and analyzing popular songs. Now back in Connecticut, he continues to teach privately in Branford and the surrounding area. He also performs regularly with his bands, The Syndicate and Debacle on the shoreline and in New York City.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe my job as a guitar teacher is to help you get better at whatever you would like to improve. For beginners, that is probably pretty straightforward. After a few lessons, with a little hard work at home, you can be playing songs YOU choose. If you are more experienced, you tell me what you'd like to work on, and I'll give you a specific path to your goals.
I have a pretty laid back teaching style, but I can tell if you've been practicing!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I require my students to have a guitar and a notebook. I bring my guitar and any handouts I might use as well as recordings of music we are working on.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in blues, rock, funk and some jazz.
Over the years I have developed a hands-on, practical instruction method that teaches music fundamentals, theory and improvisation through playing and analyzing popular songs.
After a solid base of fundamentals, I let the student choose the style and songs.
With some very young children I use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method.

structural analysis, listening exercises, analysis of classical, contemporary, pop, rock and folk music, basic music theory, basic harmonic analysis, collaborative songwriting, recording, lyrical structure

About Matthew

Heralded as "œa smart, tasteful, and genuine singer" and "a consummate multi-instrumentalist," Matthew continues to perform and broaden his range of musical experiences through diverse engagement in both the classical and non-conventional realms. Matthew has had the great privilege of performing around the world and working with some of today's brightest and most acclaimed singers, ensembles, and conductors such as Leon Botstein, Dale Duesing, Karen Brunssen, James Hall, Warren Jones, Phyllis Hoffman, Pro Arte, Canticum Scholare, and VOCES8.

As an educator, Matthew's 10+ years of teaching e
xperience in voice and drums has brought him to work with young musicians of all ages and skill types. Matthew's approach is technique driven, while at the same time, expressive, musically sensitive, and fun! Matthew's voice students will learn English and foreign language diction, ear training and sight-singing, proper posture, stage presence, confidence, and healthy vocal production suitable for all styles of singing. Drum students will learn the importance of snare drum rudiments, how to read drum charts, the nuances of various styles, as well as, develop dexterity and increase muscular function and independence. Matthew currently teaches voice and theory at Wyoming Seminary Institute in Wilkes-Barre, PA during the Summer, teaches voice at Fairfield School of Music, and owns and operates a full service analog and digital recording studio.

*** Lesson Details ***
Being a musician is exciting, challenging, and of course, rewarding. Musicians are communicators; instruments of expression. I'm a firm believer in diligent practice habits and learning the fundamentals of one's craft. From there, the music can happen.

I offer a relaxed, comfortable learning environment that is both fun and productive. A stuffy, tense atmosphere promotes timidness, and insecurity, the opposite of the environment I foster in my studio.

Whether you're a beginner with a passion, or a professional looking to fine tune your proficiency, I can help you get to where you want to be. Diligent, concise, uncomplicated, and fun! That's how I teach.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Various keyboards, full 5 piece drum set, full production and recording facility, music scores/sheet music

*** Specialties ***
Classically trained vocalist, but can teach all styles and genres of voice. Recording engineer & producer. Versed in many styles of composition. Session drummer.

Zachary H.

Stony Brook, NY

About Zachary

I believe teaching is a partnership between the teacher and the student. I am a friendly, laid-back person, I’m very patient, and I’m 100% there for my students, so you or your child can enjoy a comfortable, welcoming learning environment. To make great music, all I ask in return is an open attitude and a commitment to appropriate amounts of regular practice. With those things, almost anything is possible!

My teaching philosophy is totally centered around your individual needs. I understand that people approach the study of music at various ages, with different abilities, goals, and desi
res. I see my role as a teacher as one where I use my knowledge and experience to help you along your path. Once we establish your goals, then I can teach you what you need to know to get there.

No matter what your musical dreams entail, you will need a solid technical foundation to build upon, as well as a musical ear to help you create and collaborate. I specialize in helping students learn and improve upon both of these skills. If you are just starting out, my goal is to get you playing REAL music as soon as possible. You’ll be amazed by what you can play after just a few lessons! For intermediate students, depending on your goals, we might study chords and theory, ear training to hear song structure and chords, fretting technique and scales, different types of right hand sound production, different genres of music, or many other topics.

It’s even more important to me that our study builds your confidence, opens you up to the vast world of music, and teaches you about yourself. This personal growth, attained with consistent time and effort, is the most meaningful aspect of musical study. Helping students like you along that path is my favorite thing about teaching!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide sheet music, books and amplification, as well as my own instrument. The student would need to have their own instrument and a music stand and amplification, if applicable.

*** Specialties ***
I have an uncommonly wide breadth of experience in many genres of music. I studied both classical and jazz music intensively at the conservatory level, and have a lot of rock band experience from various projects in high school and college. I've played just about every other style at some point, from bluegrass to R&B.

A great teacher

Zach was a great teacher! He picked things that would clearly help me grow as a player, and gain greater facility on the instrument. We had a couple snafus scheduling where I might wait for 10+ minutes for a lesson to start.
