About Paul

Paul is a guitarist/songwriter/educator from Branford, CT. He began playing the guitar at age 13 with a strong background in piano. He performed and recorded with bands in high school, during which time he was influenced by a wide variety of musical artists and styles, including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Pink Floyd.

Paul enrolled at Boston's Berklee College of Music in the fall of 1994 and discovered a love for jazz, particularly guitarists such as Joe Pass and Tal Farlow and arrangers Nelson Riddle and Gil Evans. At Berklee, Paul continued to study the g
uitar while working toward a Bachelor of Music degree in Contemporary Writing and Production, which he received in 1998.

After graduating, Paul remained in Boston for several years performing and teaching private guitar lessons. He developed a hands-on, practical instruction method that teaches music fundamentals, theory and improvisation through playing and analyzing popular songs. Now back in Connecticut, he continues to teach privately in Branford and the surrounding area. He also performs regularly with his bands, The Syndicate and Debacle on the shoreline and in New York City.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe my job as a guitar teacher is to help you get better at whatever you would like to improve. For beginners, that is probably pretty straightforward. After a few lessons, with a little hard work at home, you can be playing songs YOU choose. If you are more experienced, you tell me what you'd like to work on, and I'll give you a specific path to your goals.
I have a pretty laid back teaching style, but I can tell if you've been practicing!

I require my students to have a guitar and a notebook. I bring my guitar and any handouts I might use as well as recordings of music we are working on.

I specialize in blues, rock, funk and some jazz.
Over the years I have developed a hands-on, practical instruction method that teaches music fundamentals, theory and improvisation through playing and analyzing popular songs.
After a solid base of fundamentals, I let the student choose the style and songs.
With some very young children I use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method.

xperience in voice and drums has brought him to work with young musicians of all ages and skill types. Matthew's approach is technique driven, while at the same time, expressive, musically sensitive, and fun! Matthew's voice students will learn English and foreign language diction, ear training and sight-singing, proper posture, stage presence, confidence, and healthy vocal production suitable for all styles of singing. Drum students will learn the importance of snare drum rudiments, how to read drum charts, the nuances of various styles, as well as, develop dexterity and increase muscular function and independence. Matthew currently teaches voice and theory at Wyoming Seminary Institute in Wilkes-Barre, PA during the Summer, teaches voice at Fairfield School of Music, and owns and operates a full service analog and digital recording studio.

Being a musician is exciting, challenging, and of course, rewarding. Musicians are communicators; instruments of expression. I'm a firm believer in diligent practice habits and learning the fundamentals of one's craft. From there, the music can happen.

I offer a relaxed, comfortable learning environment that is both fun and productive. A stuffy, tense atmosphere promotes timidness, and insecurity, the opposite of the environment I foster in my studio.

I tell all of my students that songwriting isn't as difficult as it seems but is a lot more work than is recognized. The trick is writing a great song, something that stands out and is unique. I cover riffs, melodies, lyrics, verse, chorus, bridge, song structure, songwriting credits, song creation/construction, improvisational writing, etc.

I provide private music lessons for guitar, bass, saxophone, music theory and songwriting. I have been teaching for over seven years. I combine my passion for teaching and music business expertise to help students achieve their goals. There are many lesson options available including at my studio in Bristol CT, online or at your location. I work with all of my students and parents to create customized teaching plans based on students learning styles, interests and goals. I am available to students outside of lesson time 7 days a week. I provide performance, writing, purchase and music recommen

I try to develop versatility and well rounded musicians no matter the skill or age level. Each student attends lessons for different reasons.Students are encouraged to explore all genres of music and I believe in exposing them to a wide variety of styles and methods. I also encourage students, if interested to write original material. There are no restrictions when it comes to music and I incorporate both old school and contemporary methods into my teaching. Students will learn first hand how what they are learning applies to the real world, including song performance from their favorite artists. I strongly encourage all students to develop an individual personal sense of style when it comes to music performance.
