Kate W.

San Antonio, TX

About Kate

I graduated from UTSA in the Fall of 2008, with a Bachelor of Music with a Vocal and Piano Emphasis. I have been teaching private piano and voice for 11+ years. I am fun, energetic, and patient. It brings me such joy to be able to teach children something I am so passionate about!

*** Lesson Details ***
Students need to practice 15 minutes a day. They are required to complete everything that is assigned to them that week, and be prepared for their lessons for the following week. A beginner usually in 3-6 months should be familiar with reading the basic treble and bass clef staff, be famili
ar with dynamic markings, beginning to understand basic music theory, tempo and minimal sight reading. Voice students study basic vocal technique, and learning to sing properly.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I usually provide the books after the parents have paid for them. They should have their own instrument to work with.

*** Specialties ***
I use the Alfred method for piano.

Within minutes, I could tell that she was a very haopy person and that I would have no problem talking with her. She also challenged me to sing outside my range. I felt unsure but she encouraged me and I did okay. I can't wait for my next lesson.

Felipe G.

San Antonio, TX

Whether you interested in performing solo or want to be in a band, I can help you get ready for your next big show!

About Felipe

Hello and thank you for viewing my profile. My name is Felipe Garcia and I am a self-taught music teacher. I began teaching music in 2010 and have loved it ever since. I believe learning to play music can be fun and easy, and I work hard to make sure your experience with music is one that will inspire you to keep playing for the rest of your life, for as Friedrich Nietzsche said, “without music, life would be a mistake.”

My experience with music began long ago when I begged my parents to buy me a drumset and they finally gave in and bought me one when I was 14. Prior to that, I had no real
experience with music except as a listener. I taught myself how to play by playing along with CDs of my favorite bands and eventually I felt like the drums wasn't enough, so I talked my parents into buying me a guitar. Just like with the drums, I taught myself to play the guitar by playing along with my favorite songs and favorite bands. Eventually I began performing in various bands, began writing my own songs, learned to play a variety of instruments, and developed enough confidence in my musical abilities to pursue a degree in music. Soon I would earn a bachelor’s degree in music theory from the University of North Texas and a master’s in music theory from Texas State University. Since then, I've been teaching music and performing in various San Antonio-area bands.

My teaching style is laid-back, yet I can be intense for students who really want to master the art of music. I understand that all students are different. There are many ways to learn music and I work hard to create lessons that fit the student’s individual style. I don’t shout instructions at students and expect them to do what I want; instead I try to create a positive environment where the students feel comfortable to express themselves however they feel.

Since I taught myself to play, I’ve always felt like an outsider in the music world. I always thought that since I taught myself, those who took lessons were better than me, and since I was never a band person in high school or college, I always felt intimidated by those who were. However recently I’ve learned that the best musicians are not the ones who have been playing the longest, but are the ones who love to do it, and as my student, it is my promise to you that you will love it too!

In addition to being tons of fun, learning to play music can affect your life in so many ways. Studies show that learning to play music facilitates the learning of other subjects and helps to develop the areas of the brain that are associated with language and reasoning, as well as supports spatial intelligence. Learning music also helps creative thinking, problem solving, and self-expression, as well as enhances discipline, craftsmanship, and the ability to work in a team. Learning music also provides opportunities to learn about the world and helps to develop compassion and respect for cultures that are not our own. And finally, music makes us take risks and provides us with a chance to conquer fear and anxiety.

Felipe has been great. I am learning a challenging new instrument - a 6-string banjo (aka a Banjitar) - which is a banjo/guitar blend. In less than a month I am feeling more confident and comfortable with the instrument. I am looking forward to learning more!

Felipe has been a fantastic instructor! My son is 4, nearing 5, and like most his age, has a limited attention span. Felipe has been able to keep him engaged and has been extremely flexible and easy to work with. He has introduced my son to not only drums, but also any other instrument he shows an interest in. I highly recommend him.

Rick is a wonderful teacher. I already have some previous music experience, so he is working with me at my level instead of starting me from the beginning. I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.

I'm a mid 40's guy who's wanted to play guitar since I was a kid. After a failed attempt in my teens, I hadn't revisited it (unless air-guitar counts) until this year. Fortunately for me, through Take Lessons, I found Rick. He is so very patient, friendly and flexible. The one thing I most enjoy about our lessons is that it's like visiting with a friend for an hour each week - whether we talk about music theory, new guitars or just about our lives, he always is engaged and accessible.

I can't say enough about Rick, he is a very knowledgeable musician, he genuinely cares that you reach your goal and is a really, really pleasant person. If your dream is just to play some of your favorite songs, or to go on to be a professional musician - Rick is definitely who I would recommend.

Neil D.

Boerne, TX

* Finally, a comprehensive instrumental course for students of all ages and experience levels that includes:

- Information on brands, supplies, and guidance with professional organizations

- Weekly lessons to develop and improve skills with proper intonation, articulation, dynamics, rhythmic meters…and more!

- Music theory (includes music history topics) with emphasis on technology and composition

- Maintenance and repair tips

- Advanced techniques: altissimo range, ornamentation, improvising, circular breathing, etc.

- Chamber music (accompaniment) to prepare for public performances

About Neil

I am a music educator of ten years: I have taught both middle school band and choir to at-risk youth, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy. My principal instrument is the saxophone (which I began playing in 1990), and I play many other instruments. As for my formal education: I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2005 from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010).

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal is to create life-long musicians...
I focus on the needs a
nd interests of my students, thereby representing all musical genres and including all cultures.
My lessons are structured into activities that incorporate various aspects of music appreciation:
Music theory, music history, music technology, performance practice, etc. (making such lessons comprehensive)

*** Studio Equipment ***
As a musician of 25 years, I believe it is the "musician that makes the instrument", and not the other way around. That is, I do not believe it is necessary to purchase the 'top' brand for your instrument in order to achieve the desired sound. Frequent practice builds skills and results in the desired tones people wish to hear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I always bring my instrument, metronome, tuner, music stand and stand for my instrument, including lesson materials and supplies.
I expect students to obtain a metronome and to always have their music folder (with ALL music etc.) available for lessons.

*** Specialties ***
All genres, all styles & all cultures! I teach students of all ages--mostly at my home studio, but I also travel to students' homes, churches, and, as an alternative during the Summer only, I am willing to meet with students in the Practice Rooms in the Fine Arts Building at UTSA.
