By Aaron P. - Austin Drum Teacher
Hi, my name is Aaron, and I teach drum lessons in Austin. I've played drums for 17 years, and I've been teaching students for 11 years. My favorite rhythms and grooves are derived from jazz, progressive rock, Latin, Indian, and African music.
If you want to take drum lessons in Austin, you’re in luck; it’s a great place for drummers! I play in eight different groups, and I get called to play with several other groups when their main drummer has another gig. Austin is full of talented singer-songwriters who need great drummers to play their tunes. If you play the songs right, you will get called again and again. If you are disciplined enough to follow through with your drum lessons, you will have rewarding results. The greatest thing that I have learned over the years is that there is something rewarding in every style of music, and learning drums will open your mind up to many other styles.
Need some inspiration to practice drums? Here are some great local venues where you can hear live music.
Yes, it’s a grocery store, but there’s also a deli and coffee bar, and from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturdays, you can witness some of the greatest music in Austin. If you live further south, head over to the Westgate location. The best thing about Central Market - you can listen to live music for free!
Strange Brew is a coffeehouse where talented local bands play 90-minute sets from early in the morning to late at night. I’ve seen and played with some of the top musicians in town at Strange Brew. They take music seriously here, and it’s one of the best places in town.
This place has a very eclectic vibe, and the music is always great. One awesome thing about this venue is the interactive drum clinics. I know a handful of great drummers who run the clinics, and I recommend checking them out.
The best way to improve as a drummer is to play with more experienced musicians. There are lots of opportunities to play with other great drummers in Austin. On Monday nights, you can join a jazz jam at the Elephant Room or check out a blues jam at Maggie Mae’s. For your middle-of-the-week music fix, stop by the Brass House for a Wednesday night jazz jam, or head over to Dozen Street to hear some awesome funk music.
With awesome drum teachers and an amazing music scene, Austin is a great place to learn drums. I wish you the best of luck on your musical journey!
Drum on, Aaron P.
I found when I learn new instruments that the biggest obstacle is technique. For my Beginners I concentrate on technique and rudiments
For intermediate students I concentrate on improvisation and learning songs verbatim.
For my advanced students I concentrate on improvisation of coordination exercises and odd meters and tempo modulations
