Learn to Play Drums in the Music Capital of the World

By Aaron P. - Austin Drum Teacher

Hi, my name is Aaron, and I teach drum lessons in Austin. I've played drums for 17 years, and I've been teaching students for 11 years. My favorite rhythms and grooves are derived from jazz, progressive rock, Latin, Indian, and African music.

If you want to take drum lessons in Austin, you’re in luck; it’s a great place for drummers! I play in eight different groups, and I get called to play with several other groups when their main drummer has another gig. Austin is full of talented singer-songwriters who need great drummers to play their tunes. If you play the songs right, you will get called again and again. If you are disciplined enough to follow through with your drum lessons, you will have rewarding results. The greatest thing that I have learned over the years is that there is something rewarding in every style of music, and learning drums will open your mind up to many other styles.

Need some inspiration to practice drums? Here are some great local venues where you can hear live music.

Central Market

Yes, it’s a grocery store, but there’s also a deli and coffee bar, and from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturdays, you can witness some of the greatest music in Austin. If you live further south, head over to the Westgate location. The best thing about Central Market - you can listen to live music for free!

Strange Brew

Strange Brew is a coffeehouse where talented local bands play 90-minute sets from early in the morning to late at night. I’ve seen and played with some of the top musicians in town at Strange Brew. They take music seriously here, and it’s one of the best places in town.

One-2-One Bar

This place has a very eclectic vibe, and the music is always great. One awesome thing about this venue is the interactive drum clinics. I know a handful of great drummers who run the clinics, and I recommend checking them out.

The best way to improve as a drummer is to play with more experienced musicians. There are lots of opportunities to play with other great drummers in Austin. On Monday nights, you can join a jazz jam at the Elephant Room or check out a blues jam at Maggie Mae’s. For your middle-of-the-week music fix, stop by the Brass House for a Wednesday night jazz jam, or head over to Dozen Street to hear some awesome funk music.

With awesome drum teachers and an amazing music scene, Austin is a great place to learn drums. I wish you the best of luck on your musical journey!

James C.

Austin, TX

About James

I have been performing, recording, and teaching music for the past five years. After getting a degree in music theory, I began playing with a band full time. In addition to playing all around Austin, I have traveled to places like Seattle, Nashville, and Waikiki to play shows, record, and interview with with my band on live radio. Songs from our album were played on Austin's own KGSR. We also played on Fox 7's morning show, Good Day Austin. I enjoy playing and teaching a variety of instruments and a variety of genres. To me, understanding music is key to unlocking your full potential for ar
tistic expression. When I teach, I incorporate both what I learned in school and on stage.

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal is not to teach my students how to play a few cool songs on their instrument. Rather, my aim is to develop the knowledge and skills in them that will take them to the next level in their playing. Whether they are beginners or have been playing for years, whether young or old, there is always more to be discovered and experienced! I want to see my students become musicians, who never stop learning and growing. In my lessons, I try include a balanced blend of Music Theory (understanding how it works), Ear Training (learning to play by ear), Practice Exercises (developing speed and coordination), Sight Reading, Improvisation (learning how to jam!), & Song Writing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide a weighted keyboard, acoustic & electric drum set, a PA system, amps & guitars for lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need to have their own instrument at home. I will provide curriculum and other various resources.

*** Specialties ***
Blues, rock, country, sight-reading and performance.

James is an excellent instructor! As a beginner student, he worked with me to pin down my goals and tailored the lessons to fit me personally. He's great at many different instruments beyond piano, and this expertise allows him to explain music beyond just the notes on the page. He really helped me enjoy the lessons and feel like I've made great progress despite being a novice.

We are very pleased with his progress so far.

Joshua started piano lessons with James in May, 2013. He has already learned to play numerous songs, and he has learned a great deal about different keys and chords in each key. James is very patient and utilizes every minute of our 30 minute lesson to cover as much as possible. Joshua likes and respects James a lot and looks forward to his piano lesson every week. Thank you James for being a great teacher!

I found when I learn new instruments that the biggest obstacle is technique. For my Beginners I concentrate on technique and rudiments
For intermediate students I concentrate on improvisation and learning songs verbatim.
For my advanced students I concentrate on improvisation of coordination exercises and odd meters and tempo modulations

About Michael

Hi I'm Mike!
I've been playing/teaching drums for over 20 years. I started out playing in Punk and Metal bands. I later got interested in Jazz which led me to the University of North Texas. I graduated there in 99 and boy did I learn a thing or two. Attending such a highly competitive school taught me a few things about learning new concepts and setting goals. I have since adopted a philosophy that yields results and have eliminated the "busy work" approach that most drum teachers use. My main interest is to see my students achieve their dreams!

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a pretty
laid back teacher. I let student drive the intensity of the lessons. I have a few set goals that all my students must achieve but it is up to the student to determine how soon they meet them. After 3 months my students will be able to play a handful of songs chosen by them. They will also be able to play rudiments as wells as improvise with them on the kit. After 6 months a student should be able to learn drum parts by ear. At that point my students should also be able to take any memorized beats or fills and "remix" them spontaneously!

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in a separate room which includes 2 drum sets and recording equipment. 1 dog kept separate. Seating available.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student should provide a permanent space where the drums are located and either a video recorder or hand held audio recorder. The student must also provide a metronome capable of being heard over the drums.

*** Specialties ***
I concentrate on drum set. I teach lots of styles at any level. I encourage learning by ear before I teach reading.

Mike is a great teacher that really understands how to pace his students. As an intermediate drummer, I have been taking lessons with him for a couple of months and really enjoy his style. He encourages improvisation rather than repeating patterns that any old goof could play. In a city where there are probably a lot of jokers trying to teach drums, Mike is one of the few that knows his stuff and knows how to cater to each unique student.

Mike is an excellent teacher. Passionate and knowledgeable about all things drumming, and just a chill personality overall, unlike teachers I've had in the past. I find him very easy to work and communicate with. I live an hour away from Austin, and often have to reschedule lessons due to a hectic and unpredictable work schedule. Mike has always been flexible when needed, and very fair when it comes to cancellations. If I could, I would take lessons more often.

I am thrilled to be working with Michael! I am a first time "OLDER" student who has never played the drums. Michael is an excellent teacher and I am very comfortable working with him! His personality and teaching style works great for me! I like his hands on learning approach and feel like I am moving forward at a good pace. I have only had three lessons, but so far so good! If you are looking for a drum teacher Michael is wonderful!

I have been playing drums for 16 years. It is my true passion. We can go over basics like breathing, technique, posture, holding the sticks, hitting the cymbals and drums, and tuning the drums. We can also get into rhythms, grooves, licks, tricks, fills, odd times, odd subdivisions, reading, learning solos, and more! I'm game for everything. We can set up an extra kit at your place or my place.

About Aaron

I was an engineering tutor at University of Texas at Austin from 2006-2009. I graduated from UT with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. I am very familiar with the UT engineering courses (from the beginning to the end).

While I was at UT, I also studied jazz drumming with Brannen Temple. I have been playing professionally for over ten years with lots of different bands. Teaching and playing music are the most gratifying things for me. But I also like to teach math!

I have been teaching high school math, physics, and music theory at Premier High School of North Austin for five yea
rs (2009-2014). I am a certified teacher by the state of Texas.

Everything from proper ear training to the correct way to hold your drums sticks. I will be teaching how to influctuate between 1/2 of a beat to 1/16 of a beat. I will be teaching more about rhythm flow and feeling the actual drum set as you play.

About Reece

Hi there! My name is Reece. I have been playing drums and swimming through the waves of music for 22 years now! I currently work a dream job at a recording studio. I live a purely creative world and try to dive in to a pool of music daily. I am so excited to meet and create music with you!

Reece is more than just an excellent drummer and instructor. She is an amazing human being. I've worked with her for years on musical collaborations and she has a magical way of communicating about an art (music) that can be difficult to put into words. She is extremely humble and makes you feel comfortable in any situation. Of any musician that I know, hands down, I would choose as a percussion instructor. I CAN NOT RECOMMEND HER ENOUGH!!!

Reece was excellent! She had prepared for my child, who is sensitive, then was open to follow his lead during the lesson. He connected with her quickly and they were able to accomplish a great deal together in just the first lesson. Thank you! We are already looking forward to our next one.

My daughter recently developed an interest in playing the drums. I was a little apprehensive at first, due to her young age and her vibrant personality, and felt bad for whomever would have to teach her. Without a doubt it would require a lot of patience and ability. Well, thanks to Reece, my daughter is now excelling and more and more excited about this new-found talent! Thank you Reece for your expertise and teaching ability!
