Learn to Play Drums in the Music Capital of the World

By Aaron P. - Austin Drum Teacher

Hi, my name is Aaron, and I teach drum lessons in Austin. I've played drums for 17 years, and I've been teaching students for 11 years. My favorite rhythms and grooves are derived from jazz, progressive rock, Latin, Indian, and African music.

If you want to take drum lessons in Austin, you’re in luck; it’s a great place for drummers! I play in eight different groups, and I get called to play with several other groups when their main drummer has another gig. Austin is full of talented singer-songwriters who need great drummers to p
lay their tunes. If you play the songs right, you will get called again and again. If you are disciplined enough to follow through with your drum lessons, you will have rewarding results. The greatest thing that I have learned over the years is that there is something rewarding in every style of music, and learning drums will open your mind up to many other styles.

Need some inspiration to practice drums? Here are some great local venues where you can hear live music.

Central Market

Yes, it’s a grocery store, but there’s also a deli and coffee bar, and from 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturdays, you can witness some of the greatest music in Austin. If you live further south, head over to the Westgate location. The best thing about Central Market - you can listen to live music for free!

Strange Brew

Strange Brew is a coffeehouse where talented local bands play 90-minute sets from early in the morning to late at night. I’ve seen and played with some of the top musicians in town at Strange Brew. They take music seriously here, and it’s one of the best places in town.

One-2-One Bar

This place has a very eclectic vibe, and the music is always great. One awesome thing about this venue is the interactive drum clinics. I know a handful of great drummers who run the clinics, and I recommend checking them out.

The best way to improve as a drummer is to play with more experienced musicians. There are lots of opportunities to play with other great drummers in Austin. On Monday nights, you can join a jazz jam at the Elephant Room or check out a blues jam at Maggie Mae’s. For your middle-of-the-week music fix, stop by the Brass House for a Wednesday night jazz jam, or head over to Dozen Street to hear some awesome funk music.

With awesome drum teachers and an amazing music scene, Austin is a great place to learn drums. I wish you the best of luck on your musical journey!

Drum on,

James C.

Austin, TX

About James

I have been performing, recording, and teaching music for the past five years. After getting a degree in music theory, I began playing with a band full time. In addition to playing all around Austin, I have traveled to places like Seattle, Nashville, and Waikiki to play shows, record, and interview with with my band on live radio. Songs from our album were played on Austin's own KGSR. We also played on Fox 7's morning show, Good Day Austin. I enjoy playing and teaching a variety of instruments and a variety of genres. To me, understanding music is key to unlocking your full potential for artistic expression. When I teach, I incorporate both what I learned in school and on stage. *** Lesson Details *** My goal is not to teach my students how to play a few cool songs on their ...

James is an excellent instructor! As a beginner student, he worked with me to pin down my goals and tailored the lessons to fit me personally. He's great at many different instruments beyond piano, and this expertise allows him to explain music beyond just the notes on the page. He really helped me enjoy the lessons and feel like I've made great progress despite being a novice.

We are very pleased with his progress so far.

Joshua started piano lessons with James in May, 2013. He has already learned to play numerous songs, and he has learned a great deal about different keys and chords in each key. James is very patient and utilizes every minute of our 30 minute lesson to cover as much as possible. Joshua likes and respects James a lot and looks forward to his piano lesson every week. Thank you James for being a great teacher!

I found when I learn new instruments that the biggest obstacle is technique. For my Beginners I concentrate on technique and rudiments
For intermediate students I concentrate on improvisation and learning songs verbatim.
For my advanced students I concentrate on improvisation of coordination exercises and odd meters and tempo modulations

About Michael

Hi I'm Mike! I've been playing/teaching drums for over 20 years. I started out playing in Punk and Metal bands. I later got interested in Jazz which led me to the University of North Texas. I graduated there in 99 and boy did I learn a thing or two. Attending such a highly competitive school taught me a few things about learning new concepts and setting goals. I have since adopted a philosophy that yields results and have eliminated the "busy work" approach that most drum teachers use. My main interest is to see my students achieve their dreams! *** Lesson Details *** I'm a pretty laid back teacher. I let student drive the intensity of the lessons. I have a few set goals that all my students must achieve but it is up to the student to determine how soon they meet them. ...

Mike is an excellent teacher. Passionate and knowledgeable about all things drumming, and just a chill personality overall, unlike teachers I've had in the past. I find him very easy to work and communicate with. I live an hour away from Austin, and often have to reschedule lessons due to a hectic and unpredictable work schedule. Mike has always been flexible when needed, and very fair when it comes to cancellations. If I could, I would take lessons more often.

I am thrilled to be working with Michael! I am a first time "OLDER" student who has never played the drums. Michael is an excellent teacher and I am very comfortable working with him! His personality and teaching style works great for me! I like his hands on learning approach and feel like I am moving forward at a good pace. I have only had three lessons, but so far so good! If you are looking for a drum teacher Michael is wonderful!

5/5- Mike is an excellent drum teacher for any skill level. He doesn't waste time with useless exercises, but instead shows you how to become a drummer that can creatively express yourself in the moment. Plus he has some of the best prices on here! If you're on the fence, I highly, highly recommend lessons with him!

Matt M.

Austin, TX

About Matt

Matt M. was born in Lowell, Massachusetts and found an interest in music as soon as his mom started playing songs through her belly with headphones and a record player. He moved down to Austin, Texas at the age of three where he continued to experiment with toy pianos and banging pots and pans. At ten years old he discovered an enthusiasm for guitar and saxophone. Picking up those instruments for a couple of years brought him to playing drum set, jamming with his brother and friends, and listening to all sorts of music. His experience advanced in High School as he enjoyed playing in the jazz band, performing at different venues, and catching concerts. When he graduated from High School, Matt decided to pursue his devotion towards music and enrolled in The University of North ...

Austin, TX

I have been playing drums for 16 years. It is my true passion. We can go over basics like breathing, technique, posture, holding the sticks, hitting the cymbals and drums, and tuning the drums. We can also get into rhythms, grooves, licks, tricks, fills, odd times, odd subdivisions, reading, learning solos, and more! I'm game for everything. We can set up an extra kit at your place or my place.

About Aaron

I was an engineering tutor at University of Texas at Austin from 2006-2009. I graduated from UT with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. I am very familiar with the UT engineering courses (from the beginning to the end). While I was at UT, I also studied jazz drumming with Brannen Temple. I have been playing professionally for over ten years with lots of different bands. Teaching and playing music are the most gratifying things for me. But I also like to teach math! I have been teaching high school math, physics, and music theory at Premier High School of North Austin for five years (2009-2014). I am a certified teacher by the state of Texas.

My 9-year-old daughter is absolutely loving her lessons with Aaron. His enthusiasm for the instrument is contagious and his patient encouragement is just what she needs to stay motivated. Having been through two other disappointing drum teachers before this, we are thrilled to have found Aaron!

Hello! I've been teaching drums for 6 years and I have my own drumming program that I've implemented on the East Side of Austin at 4 different elementary schools the past 2 years. In 2013 I won volunteer of the year from the Central Texas Afterschool network for my volunteer work with children at Heart House and The BeHive.
