Roberta M. Brooklyn, NY

In my studio, I believe that my role is to steer students toward a deeper understanding of themselves, their instrument, and their relationship to music. I tailor my teaching to the needs of my individual students, who currently range from age 7 to adult, often adding improvisation and extended techniques to increase my students€™ awareness of the potential of the flute as a channel for one€™s creativity.

About Roberta

Flutist, Roberta M., is equally at home playing classical and new music. I Care If You Listen has extolled her “lush, full tones… even among the best professionals, not many flute players sound so compelling in a lower register.” Praising her “extreme adventurousness,” New York Concert Review said she “riveted with her performance, inspiring one to want a repeated hearing.” Roberta is a founding member of the Cadillac Moon Ensemble, a quartet of unusual instrumentation dedicated to commissioning and performing new works. To date, the group has commissioned over fifty pieces. Roberta holds a Bachelor of Music with highest honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a Master of Music from SUNY-Purchase College, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the City University of New York ...

Roberta is the best!

Roberta is a super intelligent and adaptable teacher who is especially skilled at pacing her lessons and breaking things down into digestible bits for the ultra-beginner player. She is the best!

Roberta is an excellent instructor, per the fuller review that follows this summry.

I come to the flute late in life, though with a background in Celtic music on simpler wind instruments. Roberta has guided me skillfully and with compassionate direction since I embarked on my flute journey. She is helping me make the transition from folk instruments to the flute in as painless a manner as is likely to be possible. I look forward to each lesson and am highly motivated to practice in order to continue to derive the full benefits of Roberta's considerable knowledge, wisdom, artistry and instructional skill. When a particular element of a lesson goes well, it is sometimes hard to tell who is the most delighted--the student or the teacher.

Roberta has re-invigorated my daughter's interest in playing flute!

My daughter switched to learning with Roberta after 2 years of flute lessons, and the difference now that she is learning with Roberta has been amazing. With her warmth and enthusiasm, Roberta inspires and encourages my daughter to continuously improve, and my daughter has finally started enjoying playing flute again. I am very happy with the rate at which my daughter is progressing, with her lessons having an equal emphasis on technical skill and musicality.

Although I am primarily a saxophonist, flute is a secondary instrument that most saxophonists also have to know how to play. As a performer it is an absolute necessity that I be able to double on the flute and be just as proficient.

My goal as a teacher is to provide an in depth understanding of the instrument to my students. Whether we are learning technique specific to the instrument or general musical concepts, it is important to me that I take the time to insure that my students not only learn how to do something, but also the reasons why we are learning a specific concept or technique. At the end of the day, my ultimate goal is to teach you how to teach yourself, so that you may enjoy playing the instrument outside of our lessons together.

I prefer not to conform to a specific teaching style, because every student is different, and I have been fortunate to have a great variety of types of students throughout my years as a teacher. Some of my students are children and

Matt La Von is the epitome of a great teacher. He is patient, allowing you to understand things on your own time. His instruction is clear and easy to understand and his knowledge of music seems to be endless. Above all else he is an accomplished musician and I trust that under his watchful eye I will be able to improve and refine my own abilities.

I always feel he listens very closely to my frustrations and has a keen sense of where I am willing to take the next step of learning. He will never hold back but give great examples of where you can be and shows you exercises that bring those instant gratifying moments into the practice.

I use approaches from canonical flute method books (Marcel Moyse, Taffanel & Gaubert) along with etudes as a means to strengthen the fundamental technique of my students.

With beginners, demystifying tone production, vibrato and hand placement are emphasized in order to have the better enjoy the process of learning the instrument.

I'm also interested in working with students who want to focus on alto flute and piccolo and address the idiosyncrasies of these members of the flute family.

About David

I am a former principal flutist of the National Symphonia of Trinidad & Tobago and performed at several jazz festivals throughout the Caribbean. After graduating from the M.A. jazz program of Queens College, I've performed in a number of jazz, world music and musical theater groups including the quartet that performs my original music. I use traditional flute pedagogy to ensure my students have a solid foundation but also bring my non classical experience to make the lessons engaging and fun. *** Lesson Details *** I address all aspects of fundamental flute technique through the use on canonical studies (Moyse, Taffanel/ Gaubert) and etudes. The emphasis on making the lessons engaging and comprehensive for students of all levels to encourage progress. I especially love working ...

My son thoroughly enjoyed his lessons with David. A tight schedule and added hours to piano studies, has led him to place the flute on second tier, but David is a dedicated and patient teacher and if my son could set time aside for private instruction in flute, for sure we would contact David again. Very recommendable.

David is a born teacher. I began my sessions with David after a 20 year hiatus from the instrument (gave it up after 8th grade), and brought a considerable amount of insecurity and awkwardness with me to our first few classes. However, David was able to put me right at ease with his easygoing and humorous manner, and following his lead I have made more progress than I would have thought possible in a few months- particularly with improving my tone and embouchure. Every class leaves me feeling more confident about my abilities to become a respectable flutist, despite being a latecomer to the instrument. He inspires with his own beautiful playing, and enlightens with great metaphors that somehow finally help me understand what my mouth and breath are supposed to be doing :) I couldn't recommend him highly enough, and I'm looking forward to all our future sessions.

My flute skills were rather rusty when David and I started working together. Give his emphasis in jazz performance, I thought that I would have to work with another teacher to reinforce my technical skills. Not so. David has been OUTSTANDING in both the jazz improvisation side of our work together, and also in the reinforcement of the technical flute skills I wanted to master. His easy-going personality, combined with his high standards for excellence works exceptionally well for me. Even when my practicing hasn't been what it should have been, David's creative teaching skills have turned what could have been a lackluster lesson into a substantial learning experience. I cannot recommend him highly enough. I was concerned about studying the flute via Skype but that is a non-issue. Even when Skype may be having issues, we are able to make the time work well and make progress toward my goals.

I teach a classically structured flute lesson that is engaging and fun! In the early years I usually work from the Rubank method series with supplemental repertoire from all periods. My teaching focuses on tone quality, rhythmic accuracy, technical facility and repertoire development. Previous students have won honors in state-wide competitions, chair competitions and positions in regional music ensembles.

Sweet and knowledgable

I've taken 2 lessons with Heidi so far. Her knowledge of music is excellent. She's been able to meet me where I am and give me appropriate music and exercises to work on. She also so sweet. I'm an adult, but I bet she's wonderful with children, too.

My daughter has had only two lessons with Simona but the benefit is easy to see. There is a passion for excellence that is being instilled but keeping the lessons fun. This is hard to accomplish but Simona is doing it. She has been very cooperative and helpful in scheduling lessons. It has been a pleasure so far and I look forward to great reviews in the future. I highly recommend this teacher!
