Jennifer J.

Frisco, TX

I've been teaching music performance for 5 years and my students have gone on to the semi-finals in the Classical Singer competition, multiple leading roles in musicals, and much more. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to learn the musicality behind performing and as time goes on you'll be able to perform and practice in studio recitals.

About Jennifer

Hi! My name is Jennifer J. I graduated with my Masters in Music from the University of Redlands. I received my Bachelor's Degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Through my college career, I was able to perform in many musical productions. Some of these roles include: Yvonne in Miss Saigon (Louisiana Lyric Opera), Mother in Hansel and Gretel (University of Louisiana at Monroe), Erma in Anything Goes (University of Louisiana at Monroe), Euridice in Orfeo ed Euridice (University of Redlands), and Suor Angelica in Suor Angelica (University of Redlands). There are many performance comin
g up this year, also!

During my time in Undergrad, I had the opportunities to study abroad for two summers. I was accepted into University of Miami's Salzburg program (2009), and the following summer did Westminster Choir College's Florence Voice Seminar (2010). Throughout both of these experiences, I was able to work with world renowned teachers and coaches. These programs helped me grow as a teacher and a performer.

I am a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), Texoma Region.

With the experience I have, I hope to start teaching you someday!

*** Lesson Details ***
I like to have fun in lessons, but also get things done and help my students grow. I do require my students to record every lesson, therefore helping them practice during the week. All in all, I want you all to feel comfortable in your learning environment, and have fun learning!

For voice, I teach multiple breathing exercises and techniques. Also, I will organize the individuals warm-ups according to the songs we are working on and voice type.

With piano, I use the Alfred book series. I learned piano using this series and I absolutely love the visuals and techniques. It makes it easy for parents to help with their kids.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio with Yamaha upright piano. Lots of stickers and fun stuff for young students. Parents are welcome to sit in the room or are welcome to sit in the living room during the lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide the books, piano students need to pay $8 a book.

*** Specialties ***
In voice, I work the Alexander technique methods. I believe in releasing bad tension and freeing the voice.

In piano, I start with the Alfred Series. Once the student is in level 1B, I incorporate the use of a theory book. The understanding of theory is key in music!

Jonathan M.

Argyle, TX

About Jonathan

Music is what I breathe every day of my life! I grew up in Oklahoma in an average-sized city. Starting in 1st grade I pursued taking private piano lessons. Unlike most kids, I continued classical piano study throughout middle school and high school. In 2nd grade, the year after starting piano lessons, I pursued taking private trumpet lessons with the trumpet professor at the university in my city. Around age 9 I started private drum-set lessons, and age 14 picked up the acoustic guitar later followed by electric guitar. I just wanted to play ALL the instruments. After my 2nd year of high schoo
l, I decided to pursue independent study with an online accredited school, mainly for the reason of greater personal music study through the university. My trumpet professor asked if I’d like to participate in the university jazz ensemble on a weekly basis while I was still in high school. Studying independently allowed me to attend rehearsals and other college music classes that would later count as concurrent hours towards my college degree plan. Not having to "technically" GO to school, I got super involved with my church's worship teams, filling positions of drummer, acoustic guitarist, electric guitarist, and pianist for various teams.

I applied for the University of Oklahoma as a trumpet performance major in the Fall of 2010, and after receiving a very great scholarship studied there for 3 years. Upon entering my fourth year of my undergrad at OU, I decided to transfer to the University of North Texas in pursuit of the prestigious jazz lab bands. Fall 2013 was my first semester at UNT and I graduated with a classical music performance bachelor's degree in December 2014.

Studying music at a higher level, especially with such great professors that OU and UNT have to offer, has opened my mind to all the incredible ways music can be created, received, enjoyed, performed, and flirted with. These years of study starting all the way back to when I was 7 year old have not only honed my skills, techniques, and musicality, but also strengthened my passion, excited my spirits, and caused me to want to share music and its joys to every human being alive. I want to instill in every student I teach that music is a beautiful art that doesn't have to be scary or tedious, but allows the individual to express their thoughts and feelings in ways that are safe, fun, and extremely productive! I will demonstrate to students how music can be and is loads of fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
Music, but specifically the trumpet, should be in no way frustrating or tedious. My teaching style is a style that is beneficial to all students, regardless of age. I believe it is crucial for teachers to practice patience with students, as music is a challenge to master. The teaching environment is very easy-going, fun, creative, yet progressive. I base teaching techniques, materials, and also style on the personality and talent of that particular student, although ALL students are treated with positive attitudes and an understanding manner. I see exactly what students need to hear/do in order to progress at an exponential rate. I make lessons fun for them. I see how students respond to what’s happening and how they’re getting the material, and I focus in on a certain method that guarantees they get and understand my teachings. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the trumpet as just a hobby or plan to intently study and play professionally in the future, I am confident I can get you to your goal! Do you have a specific goal in mind? Tell me! I’d love to help you out!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect students to have their own B-flat horn, mouthpiece, and valve oil. Books are to be purchased upon request.

*** Specialties ***
I teach all-around trumpet skills: improvement of sound production and tone, increased technical skill (broader range, cleaner tonguing, easier flexibility, fluency, agility), sight-readability and readability, musicality and phrasing techniques, jazz, classical, pop, orchestral, and GREAT tunes!

Music Theory
Exceptional teacher

I am an older non-musician in a household full of multi-talented musicians. I finally decided that I needed to at least receive some education in music performance and music theory just to keep up with my family. Jonathan has been the perfect instuctor for that! Not only has he explained the concepts of music theory in a logical and easy to understand way - he has made it challenging and exciting! I have begun trumpet lessons and I am progressing far faster than I thought possible. What a great instructor! I no longer consider myself a "non-musician."

Trumpet
Outstanding

I'm a trumpet beginner. I've tried taking lessons before but really went nowhere and it was a horrible experience. Jonathan has been very patient as he has moved me quickly and effectively through the basics of trumpet to where I now have a sense of pride in what I can do! I almost didn't give him a try but his experience and friendly picture convinced me to try it again. I'm so glad I did! I can't recommend this instructor more highly!

Jonathan is doing a great job teaching me from no knowledge at all. He's given me great exercises to increase my playing ability and is very patient when I don't understand or can't figure out how to play the notes.
