Cory P.

Pittsburgh, PA

I have been playing upright bass for over twenty years and I have been playing professionally for over ten years. I bring a wide range of influences to my bass teaching and tailor the materials I use for each student's needs. I generally start students in method books from Simandl and Vance and move on to Rabbath, Petracchi, and various other materials that will help each student.

About Cory

I grew up around Atlanta, GA and started playing piano when I was around 7 years old and bass and guitar when I was 11. Most of my education has been on the upright bass. I've studied classical bass performance at major music schools on the east coast and in the midwest. I've studied and worked with musicians from many of the great orchestras around the world.

I enjoy working with students who are just coming to the bass, guitar, or piano for the first time and getting them started with music in a rewarding way as well as more advanced students that need finer musical direction or auditi
on coaching.

*** Lesson Details ***
I try to keep a relaxed environment while still being motivating and inspiring. I tailor lessons around what the individual student's goals are. There are materials that I like to use with most students but I'm open to using anything that meets the needs and desires of the student.

I try to find a nice balance of technique work and music. It's important to develop healthy technique from the very beginning. It's very easy to develop bad habits that can have serious health risks down the road (i.e. tendonitis, carpal tunnel, back pain, etc.) that can make it difficult if not impossible to keep playing. I've spent many years undoing bad habits that I developed from the first years that I played bass without any formal instruction. Yoga, Alexander technique, massage, and many great teachers have helped me overcome the issues I had and have helped me develop healthy habits. I try to pass this education on to my students so that they can have an enjoyable and healthy experience with music for the rest of their lives.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano and music stand. Living room with seating for parents.

The students need to provide their own bass and bow or guitar and music.

*** Specialties ***
Classical. I have studied with members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and New York Philharmonic and my teaching and playing reflect the traditions of these teachers and orchestras.

Jesica S.

Pittsburgh, PA

Juilliard and Carnegie Mellon trained teacher available for students of all levels and ages.I want to ensure that we focus on what you want to learn, that you are happy with your progress, master proper technique, and have fun!

About Jesica

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I started playing flute when I was 8 and bass when I was 13. In 2002, I moved to New York City to attend The Juilliard School, where I earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Double Bass performance. I came to Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Mellon University, where I got a Master's of Music degree and a post-graduate Performance Residency Certificate. Since finishing at Carnegie Mellon in 2011, I have been freelancing in Western PA, Ohio, and West Virginia.

*** Lesson Details ***
I want to provide a fun, relaxed environment in which you feel appro
priately challenged and comfortable to make mistakes. I don't have a pre-set course of music and exercises that I give to every student. Rather, I prefer to have a variety of music and exercises at hand so that we can find material that addresses the student's learning needs and is enjoyable for that student. I love teaching to all ages and levels, and I understand that each student's learning style and goals are different - the needs of a small child are very different than the needs of a student looking to get into a college music program. I want to ensure that you are happy with your progress, that you learn proper technique, and that you have fun!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music stands, an electronic keyboard, mirrors so that students can see and make corrections to their form, a music library, and seating for parents. There's easily available parking on my street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my own instrument to demonstrate on. I have an electronic keyboard that I can bring if a music theory student does not have their own piano or keyboard. Students are responsible for purchasing all books and materials.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical music of all eras, from baroque through 21st century compositions.

Bud H.

Pittsburgh, PA

In addition to being a bass major, I have taught strings (orchestra) in the public schools for 20 years from beginners through the high school level. I am a stickler for proper technique and posture because without these, students, especially younger students, can develop physical issues which may cause pain and inhibit their progress and enjoyment of the instrument. I am well versed in many styles beyond classical playing and enjoying exposing my students to explore alternative styles for string instruments including fiddling, jazz and improvisation.

About Bud

My wife and I have recently relocated to Pittsburgh from the Northern Virginia/Washington DC area. I am a bass major who recently retired from a successful 20 year career teaching orchestra in Prince William County, Virginia. I hold a bachelor degree in music education from Shenandoah University and a masters in conducting from George Mason University. Prior to teaching in the public schools, I taught private lessons for many years in both music stores and my home studio. I also served for 10 years in the executive board of the Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors' Association and the Virginia
Music Educators' Association as the Orchestra Representative and maintain a position on the Executive Board as the Orchestra Representative Emeritus. I have extensive experience teaching all the orchestral string instruments but my main instrument is the electric bass. I have been a freelance musician for most of my life and performed all styles of music but my favorites are musical theater and jazz and blues.
