I am passionate about Music and Music Education. It's rewarding for me to watch my students develop in their musical skill and enjoy making music more and more. My students range from the very young (4 years old) to school age children, to teens, and adults. My students benefit from my expertise in teaching Vocal and Piano music, my knowledge of Music Theory, and my encouraging teaching style. I have been involved in making music since I was a young child, and I have been teaching private students since I was a Music major at the University of Florida in 1982 when a fellow college student asked me to teach her voice lessons. I have a variety of experiences over the years, ranging from instructors who graduated from the Juilliard School of Music, Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles and the Music Conservatory of Paris. This is my main instrument for teaching. The greatest melodic percussion instrument in the world. There is a lot I can show you about this magnificent beast, in all styles and formats.
As a graduate of University of Memphis (Bachelor of Music, composition/percussion, 1983), I have since been a professional musician for over thirty years, performing in 49 out of 50 United States, Canada, U.K., Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore, and on over 100 nationally released recordings. I believe everyone has music inside that needs to be nurtured and shared, so I began teaching contemporary keyboard lessons privately in upstate New York starting in 2010. In 2012 I was invited to be the main keyboard teacher at the Paul Green Rock Academy in Woodstock NY, whose namesake was the original founder of the School of Rock franchise, and within the first year helped to quadruple the student body, while guiding them through learning the demanding music of Yes, Queen, and Frank Zappa. Now ...
I've been a piano/keyboard player for 15+ years - inspired by Billy Joel, Elton John, & others - and have been successfully teaching for more than 4. After studying the instrument in college and gaining lots of performing experience, I've gone on to teach upward of 100 students from varying backgrounds and interests, and I take pride in making the lesson fit the student instead of the other way around. I'm a professional musician and performer myself, so I know how what's being learned in the lesson and practiced at home directly relates to what being played out on the stage.
Prior to moving to Nashville, I spent years as an instructor at the Newburgh Performing Arts Academy in Newburgh, NY, servicing not only students from the struggling local community, but also those traveling up to 40 minutes to see me for their weekly lesson. I began teaching group lessons, expanded to individual lessons, and my youthful, energetic personality soon had me handling upwards of 35 students per week spanning ages 6 to 45, ranging in abilities from "never touched an instrument before" to "starting to compose and perform original music," and including some children with special needs. My time at NPAA gave me great experience teaching students of all ages, abilities, and musical interests. Whether the student was just beginning, more advanced, interested in classical, ...
