Adrienne I.

Greenbelt, MD

The most important element in singing is proper breath support. Most of my students come with a good amount of natural talent and a healthy dose of determination. A willingness to learn proper breath technique is essential to improving upon one's natural talent for singing any style of music.

About Adrienne

Adrienne is a native of Detroit, who recently graduated with a Master's Degree in Opera from the University of Maryland Opera Studio. Before pursuing that degree, she graduated with honors from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance and a Teaching Certificate in K-12 Vocal Music. She has been full time music teacher in a Montessori Academy, an Associate Instructor of Voice at the International School of Music in Bethesda, MD, and has over 10 years of professional experience working with students all ages. Most recently, she had the distinct honor of creating
the role of Marva Trotter in the World Premiere of "Shadowboxer," based on the life of legendary boxer, Joe Louis. Other recent performances include the role of Ramiro in Mozart’s "La finta giardiniera" with the Maryland Opera Studio; the title role in Bizet's "Carmen," and winning First Place in the Adrian Boyer Aria Competition at the Bay View Music Festival. She placed first in both the Local and District levels of the 2006 NANBWPC Voice Competition (formerly the “Leontyne Price Competition”) and went on to compete at the National Level. Since the summer of 2007, Adrienne has performed extensively on some of the most infamous European stages as the Strawberry Woman in Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" under the auspices of New York Harlem Productions. She is currently performing with the Washington National Opera, and recently made her solo role debut in Puccini's "Manon Lescaut." Though her training and professional singing career focus is opera, she prides herself on her versatility as a performer who can effortlessly navigate between the demands gospel, musical theatre and pop genres. She also enjoys sharing the secrets to great singing and holds thee ability to teach all styles of singing.

My philosophy behind teaching has a lot to do with being physically involved in music making. I believe one needs to use one's whole body to support good singing. I'm very much into using movements to help students learn to move their breath through to create sound. I teach classical vocal technique as the basis for all styles. I teach proper breath support in order to build a strong, healthy vocal sound. After months of working with me, students will have a very strong grasp of proper breathing for singing and how to support their sound with their whole body.

free open space

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have a portable piano keyboard

*** Specialties ***
Classical technique as a foundation for all singing.

Adrienne is an excellent voice teacher that I’d highly recommend to anyone who wants to improve their singing voice or learn how to sing. I have a background in playing guitar and electronic music production but have always wanted to add singing to my musical skill set, and Adrienne has been very helpful in achieving my goals. She has a deep knowledge of the theory and technique of singing and does a great job explaining concepts that are often very abstract and difficult to grasp. She is always positive which helps boost my confidence in my voice, while at the same time she never allows me to sing lazily or with improper technique. In addition she is a fun person to work with and is always professional with scheduling lessons. With her help I’ve discovered a side of my voice I never knew I had!

Wilma Evangeline B.

Bowie, MD

I've been teaching chorus and doing private voice lessons for almost 10 years. For the past years, my students in private singing lessons have gained a basic understanding of vocal anatomy and become more skilled in correct breathing technique, moving between vocal registers and producing balanced tone. I usually select an age appropriate song for my students to learn for each session, and each skill the students learned during the lessons will be applied to the singing of that song.

My 10 year old daughter has been taking singing lessons from Robert for 4 months. Her singing voice has improved immensely as well as her confidence in her own voice. She has thoroughly enjoyed each lesson with Robert and always comments on how quickly the lesson time passes by. She also talks about how much she has learned from him.
Overall we have both been thrilled with the experience of taking lessons from Robert.

Belinda L.

Baltimore, MD

My specialty is in classical voice technique, whether that be for opera, art song, musical theatre, pop, or R&B.

About Belinda

*** Lesson Details ***
NOTE: I prefer to teach students ages 11 & up.  I will accommodate younger students, but as vocal development is a direct reflection of physical development (the instrument is the body), we will be unable to delve deeply into technique.  Instead, the curriculum for younger students will include musicianship and piano skills; they will be more of music lessons that incorporate singing rather than "vocal" lessons.  My current studio consists of all sorts of singers including classical, musical theater, R&B, and pop.  In classical voice lessons, we will be learning songs n
ot only in English, but also Italian, German, and French. Classical voice lessons may not be for everyone, however, and we will learn repertoire that suits the interests of each student.

I emphasize a basic knowledge of music theory, because it's important for a singer to not only know how to sing, but to also understand the music he or she is singing. I will incorporate music theory into the lessons, starting with basics such as learning how to read notes.

I believe in making sure the singer is comfortable and confident.  The environment you will be learning in is open and non-threatening because a singer needs a place to explore his or her voice.  I encourage my students to make mistakes and to keep the lines of communication as open as possible.  Singers are perfectionists, and we're constantly telling ourselves what we do wrong- we don't need someone else enforcing that negativity.

I concentrate on a classical vocal technique, with proper posture, efficient breathing, lack of facial and body tension, and healthy vocal production. I believe that it is important to have a strong foundation of healthy technique no matter what style of singing. My teaching style and lesson focus will be different for each individual person, and I'm very flexible in adapting to each singer's needs and personality.

I am a very understanding teacher, and very patient, but I will push you to work to your potential! What you put into these lessons and your practicing is what you will get out of it. I am not strict, but I do expect dedication, passion, and respect. I am a very enthusiastic and energetic teacher, and lessons with me will be fun, productive, and encouraging.

If I sound like the right teacher for you, please arrange a trial lesson to see how well we work together!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room, piano, full-length mirror, comfortable seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers classified as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25 lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students. I specialize in classical singing- applicable to any style of singing!

I have been working with Belinda for a little over 2 years. Every lesson, she challenges me to be better than before. What I love most about her style, is she customizes her style of teaching for the student. I am a very imagery oriented person, and she always helps me to visualize things in ways that makes sense to me. My singing has dramatically improved during my time with Belinda, and I would recommend her to anyone in a heart beat. Every lesson is different, every lesson is challenging in a new way, and every time I walk away feeling like that was the best lesson I've ever had. Thank you Belinda!!

Shannon F.

Gambrills, MD

Although I strongly believe ANYONE can sing well, it can be difficult to teach yourself, so having someone who can listen to you critically is really important. In any genre, we need to know how to sing higher (with ease), how to sing in tune, and how to reduce tension. Each genre has its own musical style, vowel sounds, lyrical choices, and song structure, so I combine those elements with vocal technique when teaching students who are interested in learning to sing.

About Shannon

Hello! I'm Shannon, and I would love to teach you about music! I have an extensive musical background in both performance and education. I attended George Mason University and the world renowned College of Music at the University of North Texas. I am also an award winning bassist and singer, having performed at such venues as the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley, Rams Head Tavern, and more. I specialize in teaching contemporary styles (pop, rock, jazz, musical theater, etc.). I have taught many successful young vocalists and instrumentalists and believe in a positive, fun, confidence building appr
oach. My students learn music theory, warm ups, and technique in conjunction with songs so they can apply musical concepts in a practical way.

Tips for Singing: Why Practicing Scales Matters
It's a common misconception that singers and instrumentalists are two completely different types of musicians. They're actually much more alike than you might think! The difference is that, as singers, your instrument is your body! Because of this, as you learn how to sing, you'll likely come across some specific issues of technique. One of the most important things for singers to work on is singing notes that are perfectly in tune. Generally, producing the correct notes for an instrumentalist
