About Makala
I have loved music as long as I can remember. I know its cliche© to say so, but it's true! :)

For me, having parents of different ethnicity and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. The force of this crayon box of rhythms and sounds captivated and affected me so much that it is the key experience that I draw from in making my own music today.

I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska (a small town in the center of the state) so my only option for entertainment and fun was getting involved in the arts! I started performing at a very young age as both a dancer and a musician. I studied classical ballet, modern dance, hip hop and street dance, and world dance traditions throughout my formative years, which helped me to gain rhythmical fluency. I started my
formal music training when I began to play the cello. From then on, I was hooked on the sound and I immersed myself in music as much as I could; performing, competing, working in as many musical groups and productions as possible (as both a vocalist and cellist), and even teaching.

I moved to Seattle in 2003 to study opera at Cornish College of the arts, only to later change my major to Jazz, and then again to Latin music studies. Since graduating from Cornish in 2007, with my Bachelor of Music degree, I have been actively and diligently working in the local music scene; performing and recording with artists and groups of many different styles. Everything from various Latin genres, to Rock, to R&B/Soul, to Hip Hop, and Jazz. Through my music, I aim to reach out to people of all cultures. I also aim to teach my own students with the hope that they too can discover the same continuous love of music that I have grown to feel (and still am growing to feel) over the years. :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
88 key piano, cello, various percussion instruments, guitars, ukulele, library, computer, lessons are given in a private studio.

*** Specialties ***
As far as voice goes, I teach all genres and styles but I personally specialize in the Latin genres. I teach all aspects of the music; rhythm, harmony, theory. I even teach performance; how to work with a band in real-time communication, song communication (or story telling as I like to call it), and developing ones own personal style. I believe that there is much more to singing than just vocal technique alone, so I believe in teaching musical fundamentals and functions so that my students will not only be considered vocalists, but competent musicians.

Raised in largely bilingual household. B.A. in Spanish from UW (cum laude). English fluency slightly stronger. Extremely high level Spanish proficiency although the minutiae within humor can sometimes be lost. Excellent for those who need help with pronunciation, grammar (clarification of grammatical rules like the difference between a direct object and an indirect object, etc.), conjugation, and conversation.

DAVID IS AN OUTSTANDING TEACHER IN EVERY RESPECT. HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH SEEMS EXCELLENT, AND HIS INTEREST IN THIS LANGUAGE IS CLEARLY VERY STRONG. THIS ALLOWS CLOSE ANALYSIS OF SPANISH, AND STANDS AS A SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT TO THE DIDACTIC PROCESS. IN TURN THIS PROMOTES A SPIRIT OF LEARNING IN CLASS WHICH IS INFORMATIVE AND GOOD FUN. FINALLY HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH/ENGLISH COGNATES AND INDO-EUROPEAN ROOTS IS UNUSUALLY BROAD, WHICH MAKES LEARNING SPANISH WITH HIM EASY AND ENTERTAINING. I BELIEVE DAVID HAS A TRUE VOCATION FOR TEACHING, AND I HOPE I CAN GO ON WITH LESSONS WITH HIM FOR SOME TIME TO COME.

I teach in a way that is as focused on the grammar as you want to be. I prefer conversational classes, but for many in traditional classes it is the grammar that they are not understanding.

About Bryce
Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. -Ben Franklin

An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. - Ben Franklin

The unconventional method of teaching begins here

I am a Spanish Language Consultant

I am a concierge tutor meaning that I make every meeting personalized for you. Everyone learns a language differently. For some they just want to speak. For others they want to learn to read or write. And some want to do it all. Either way I will do everything in my power to assure that happens.

Where did I learn Spanish?
I took it in high school like all of us and failed out in the second year. Then seven years later I took a class in Bellevue College and got the best grade in the class. Soon after the class finished I moved to Bogotá, Colombia for a year and half where I really improved
my level to near native status. When I was a kid in high school I did not see how cool it is to be able to speak another language nor did I care. However, now it was a defining point in my life and something that no one can take away from me.

My schedule is also very flexible giving you plenty of freedom over when to meet.

I am connected to a network of native speakers who are all my very close friends who can be included in the sessions when the time is right or whenever you may like.

I have been a Spanish Consultant since 2011 and love doing it. I really get fired up when students begin to take off on their own with the language with less and less of my help.

I don't think you will find a more passionate tutor.

Students who will succeed with me can be of any age but should have these traits if they wish to excel:
Discipline
Not afraid to make mistakes
Positive attitudes
Open mind
Willingness to think outside of the box

Thank you and have a beautiful day now

I took 8 years of Spanish classes and lived in Ecuador where I used Spanish on a daily basis.

My teaching philosophy is to help students engage in learning. I find that a personal connection to new information makes it more engaging and meaningful, and students remember it better too. It's also more fun.

That being said, if learning is more readily achieved for your student through other methods, we will do whatever works best. I cater to results, because my ultimate goal is the student's success.

About Joshua
I am a tutor who earned a music teaching degree, substitute taught, and didn't become a school teacher. I held professional tech retail jobs and am supplementing my life with my passion - education.

Whatever subject or instrument I teach, I celebrate students' successes; and I enjoy helping learners have new aha moments.

The majority of my students take guitar, bass guitar, or Spanish lessons. I am an educator and help my students learn other skills and knowledge sets too.

I went to Ohio State University for college, earned a BA in Music Education, and graduated Cum Laude. I also spent 4 years in the Ohio State University Marching Band.

Through my healing journey, I've developed patience, insight, and understanding for my students' learning processes.

I'm excited to help you incorporate new skills into your life!

Kids' Guitar Lessons: How Often Should My Child Practice?
Odds are that if your child is taking guitar lessons, your child chose to play the instrument. Unlike stringed instruments, piano, and classical instruments, kids usually choose to start playing guitar. Kids guitar lessons are a great start, especially when they are geared to your child’s age, but the only way your child will really progress with the guitar is through regular practice. Practicing is a unique challenge when it is an instrument that a child chooses to play. People tend to
Flower Power: 4 Easy Ukulele Songs from the 60s
Ready for a time warp? Ukulele teacher Willy M. has five classic tunes from the 60s that are perfect for your ukulele! There was something about the music of the 1960s that has remained popular year after year. Tips for Singing: Why Practicing Scales Matters
It's a common misconception that singers and instrumentalists are two completely different types of musicians. They're actually much more alike than you might think! The difference is that, as singers, your instrument is your body! Because of this, as you learn how to sing, you'll likely come across some specific issues of technique. One of the most important things for singers to work on is singing notes that are perfectly in tune. Generally, producing the correct notes for an instrumentalist
Violin Tips: Stiff Shoulders and Arm Pain
Playing the violin should be fun - not a pain! Some arm fatigue is normal when you're first starting out, but anything more than that may be a sign of poor posture, technique or instrument placement. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you practice and play... 1. Relax. Many beginner players tense up their shoulders, arms or wrist without even realizing it, which can cause a lot of problems. Just relax! Focus on your breathing, but also don't lose your posture. 2. Check your techni
