Spanish Lessons in Portland

By Gregory E. - Portland Spanish Teacher

Bienvendios! So you want to learn Spanish – the language with the second highest number of native speakers in the world, the second most commonly spoken language in the United States, and the second most commonly spoken language in Oregon? You’re in luck! There are many brilliant Spanish teachers available here to help you, and Portland has a plethora of exciting opportunities to help you on your way to fluency – regardless of your level!

Whether you’ve just learned your first few sentences after a few Spanish lessons in Portland or you are fluent but want some refreshers, a fun and powerful technique is to meet with local, native Spanish speakers for a language exchange, or intercambio de idiomas, in which you will converse half the time in Spanish and the other half in English. A one-on-one meeting is often more beneficial than a group setting for getting into deeper topics and allowing your conversation partner the time to learn the particular areas in which you may need more assistance.

As a beginner, one-on-one conversation exchanges with native Spanish speakers may also be less intimidating than group situations. But don’t be timid! You may have luck finding a language exchange partner at Portland State University or a local community college near you like PCC Sylvania, Cascade, or Southeast. Also check out ESL academies in town, like Portland English Language Academy, to find native Spanish speakers looking to learn English. You can also look for opportunities like these on Craigslist or try placing your own advertisement there.

Group language exchanges are also an excellent way to practice speaking and listening in Spanish as well as a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people with whom you can share the journey of becoming bilingual! You can find these intercambios on weekends all over the city hosted by the Multnomah County Library (https://multcolib.org/events/intercambio-language-exchange).

Portlandia Language School in SE Portland also has a great Spanish-English language exchange on Wednesdays and Saturdays where you can practice with native Spanish speakers, and if you fancy a pub, there is an excellent and social language exchange every Tuesday night at the Green Dragon Bistro and Pub (http://www.meetup.com/Spanish-conversation-group-Tuesdays).

Meetup.com is an excellent resource to find other Spanish learning opportunities in Portland as well as Spanish language cultural events. There are always great events such as the Spanish conversational fiesta and Spanish language Movie Fridays with the Portlandia meetup group (http://www.meetup.com/The-Portlandia-Spanish-Conversation-Group). Thursday fiestas offer a fun, festive, and social atmosphere to practice speaking Spanish with other learners as well as native speakers, and the Movie Friday event offers you a chance to practice comprehension skills while watching Spanish language movies from different countries (with English subtitles).

The “Portland Spanish Conversation” meetup group (http://www.meetup.com/Portland-Spanish-Conversation) offers interesting cultural events such as Spanish language concerts as well as a weekly coffee-and-Spanish conversation at the Hollywood Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays in NE Portland. This is another great opportunity to get out there and practice in a casual environment and learn more about different Spanish speaking cultures.

Also take your try at Salsa or Latin dancing on Portland’s Casino (Salsa) Fridays (http://www.meetup.com/Portlands-Casino-Salsa-Fridays)! This is a wonderful meetup group and event to learn about Salsa or Latin dancing and Latino culture where you can meet native Spanish speakers.

With so many rich opportunities to meet and practice Spanish with real native Spanish speakers as well as other students, Portland can be a playground for your new tongue. If you’re not already taking Spanish lessons in Portland, find a teacher and get excited! Don’t be shy, start rolling those Rs, get out there and meet new people, dance some salsa, eat some salsa, and have fun!

Mucha suerte!

I've been teaching Spanish for over 10 years in universities (SDSU and Georgetown), private schools and through private lessons, and my students have gone on to develop a deep love of Spanish culture, study abroad in Latin America, and more! It is important for me to get to know my students and their goals so that I can adapt my lessons to their pace and needs. I love working with students of all experience levels and espero contar con su presencia!
I am currently just accepting students for long commitment with the lessons.

About Ana
Hi, there! My name is Ana and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching Spanish since 2007 and have loved helping my students to reach their goals whether that was getting ready for a test, learning their ancestors language or getting fluent for their next job destination. I went to San Diego State University and earned a Master's program in Spanish linguistics. I also pursued a second Masters in Spain (my home country) in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language. I'm a motivated and dynamic teacher who has learnt that all students can learn a second language if they are challenged and encouraged. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

Credentialed high school Spanish teacher in CA with a masters in education, so I am very familiar with how students learn and adapting to learning styles. I like to build vocab, then use conversation to more organically learn words!

I'm happy to adapt lessons to themes or specific grammar exercise for my students if they wish! Some native speakers may speak well and know a lot of vocab, but they struggle explaining the WHY certain grammar features are the way they are! Just like in English, you need both conversational AND formal knowledge of a language.

About Justin
I'm a high school Spanish teacher with a BA in Spanish and MA in education. I've lived in México and Argentina for three months in each place.
I am a fully credentialed Spanish teacher with experience teaching lower to upper levels of Spanish including a Spanish for Spanish Speakers class.
I have been tutoring for three years. If you're a little outside of my traveling radius, contact me and I may be willing go farther and/or meet you somewhere.

Personalised and dynamic classes for all levels!
Lessons are shaped to the student's need: grammar, vocabulary, fluency, accent...

About Raquel
Hi!

I have been tutoring students since I was an undergrad back in Spain. While doing so, I realised there are very few better feelings besides the satisfaction of being a part of the improvement of your student's skills and knowledge.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in philology, so I have a deep knowledge on how languages construct themselves and work. Besides, I have a Master's degree in Literary Studies and am currently a PhD student in Literary Studies. But most importantly, I was born in Madrid (Spain) and lived there for over twenty years, so you'll get to learn Spanish and its culture from a truly Madrilenian!

My tutoring approach is based mostly on theory and practice, with a lot of perseverance! I usually like to teach some aspect of the language and then make the student approach it in a practical way. Lessons can be tailor
ed to meet the student's specific needs, though! Each student is different from the rest, and therefore learns in an individual way and at an individual pace. Personal tutoring will always be provided to ensure you're always getting what you need: grammar, vocabulary, fluency, accent...

Raquel is a very meticulous and gifted teacher. She was well prepared from the very first lesson and she always made sure her explanations were clear before moving on. She helped dispel many doubts I carried along in my mind for a long time in Spanish grammar. The classes are fun, friendly, and are aimed at the serious-minded student. Highly recommended.

Language learning must be personalized! What are your interests; sports, art, politics, animals, the environment? I will find out what you like and tailor lessons with music, shows, articles, games and conversation that apply to YOUR interests. More intrinsic motivation will help you learn.
I have 6 years experience teaching Spanish levels 1- Honors IV at the high school level, am a trained medical interpreter and taught English for 1 year in Granada, Spain, in addition to living in Germany.
Additionally, I have a BA in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Maryland at College Park and have studied at the graduate level at American University.

About Ashleigh
I'm a former Spanish teacher who has taught taught levels 1-IV for the last 4 years. Prior to that, I lived in Germany as a military spouse where I taught yoga. Before Germany, I taught Spanish for two years at a private boarding school in Raleigh, North Carolina. My first teaching position, however, was in Granada, Spain where I taught English at a rural school near Granada, Spain having won a fellowship after university graduation.
Although my bachelors is in Spanish Language and Literature I am studying TESOL at American University where I have completed 12 credits in language assessment, second language acquisition and linguistics. My classes are engaging and personalized. For my athlete students, I find articles and clips about their sport that we build language around. I do the same for the interests of my other students, ther
eby making their connection to the language personal and intrinsic. In our tutoring sessions, there will be music, video and games! Because I am a teacher, I can help you liaise with your student's teacher in a way that will help us understand how to help your student.
