About the Polish Language
The Polish language belongs to the Slavic family of languages, which is the third-largest group in Europe, falling behind only Romance and Germanic languages. Polish first became distinguished as its own tongue in the 10th century, when Mieszko I gathered and joined the tribes within the region that were using similar languages. When the tribe eventually
adopted Christianity and the Latin alphabet, Polish was cemented in history as a language that would stand the test of time.
Used widely in religious texts across Europe, Polish was one of the most commonly spoken languages in Medieval Europe. Later, due to the geopolitical struggles of the first and second World Wars, it was nearly wiped out during the early part of the 20th century.
Today, Polish is widely spoken in Eastern Europe and, of course, in Poland. With about 45 million speakers around the world, learning Polish can help you find your way around an Eastern European vacation, allow you to communicate with immigrant communities all over the world, and even make it possible for you to study historic medieval texts in their original format.
Why Learn to Speak Polish?
The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) rates Polish as a Category III language, meaning it's considered hard for a native English speaker to learn due to significant linguistic and cultural differences. The FSI estimates an average of 44 weeks or 1,100 hours of study to achieve proficiency with the Polish language. That being said, Polish is a relatively easy Slavic language for English speakers to learn because, unlike others, it uses the Latin alphabet.
Polish's use of the Latin alphabet makes it quick for an English speaker to learn to read. Native English speakers, however, still need to learn to bend their tongues around the quite different pronunciations and sounds used in the Polish language. Widely spoken throughout the nations of Eastern Europe (such as Belarus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Ukraine), learning Polish is one of the best ways to communicate your way around the region — whether traveling for business or pleasure.
Studying Polish also provides students a gateway to Eastern European culture, which is often overlooked in the American west. When you learn Polish, you'll be able to cook Polish cuisine from authentic recipes. You can also enjoy the writings of Polish poets and authors in their original text.

When studying with a private Polish tutor, you'll learn much faster than you could if studying independently or in a larger language class. Just like Polish language lessons for beginners will differ from lessons meant for experienced students, kid’s classes will differ greatly from those aimed at adults.
