Learning Spanish in Chicago

by Teresa K. - Chicago Spanish Teacher

Top job-searching websites are currently showing more than 1,900 bilingual Spanish job openings in the Chicago and surrounding suburb areas. From insurance agents to managerial positions in companies of all industries, being bilingual is certainly a plus for any kind of job. So, if you're interested in taking Spanish lessons in Chicago, here are some opportunities to experience Spanish-Latino culture here in the greater Chicagoland area!

  1. The International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago has the following resources and events: • Chicago Latino Film Festival, including more than 100 films • Latino Music Festival, with 15-20 concerts • The Reel Film Club, showing the most popular films from the past Film Festivals • Film in the Park, in partnership with Chicago Park District

  • At the National Museum of Mexican Art, you can immerse yourself in the richness of Mexican art and culture right here in Chicago! For more information, visit: http://www.nationalmuseumofmexicanart.org/

  • The Chicago Public Library has numerous resources and books about Hispanic American culture, history and research information.

  • Also, here are some FAQs from my students about learning Spanish:

    1) What dialect of Spanish should I learn?

There is some confusion around the concept of a "dialect." While speakers of different Chinese dialects (Mandarin, Cantonese, etc.) can hardly understand each other due to a big diversity in the forms of the dialects, the Spanish spoken in Spain and countries in Latin America is only one language with accent variations. A native Spanish speaker in Mexico can easily communicate with a native Spanish speaker in Spain, Peru or Argentina. Accents may vary (in the same way an English-speaker from Texas may speak differently than an English-speaker from England), but it's still the same language.

    2) How many types or dialects of Spanish are there?

Spain used to consist of several kingdoms and each had a different language, such as Castellano, Catalan, Gallego, etc. The actual Constitution of Spain recognizes those different languages as official languages in Spain, while Castellano (Castilian) is defined as the unifying language for the entire country. Castellano (Spanish) is the language taught in America by the Spanish colonists, resulting in the "Español" spoken in America, with slight accent variations in different countries.

    3) What are the fastest ways to learn Spanish?

I always encourage my students to practice Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing in Spanish (SLRW). When learning a new expression, it's recommended to say it out loud, listen to the teacher, read and write it, and make other similar sentences. When a person desires to be a good singer, he or she needs to sing every day. The same goes for Spanish; it's necessary to practice Spanish in all four ways: SLRW. That's the reason why the TOEFL test includes all four sections.

    4) How can I choose the best Spanish teacher?

My recommendation is to learn Spanish from a teacher who lived ten or more years in any Spanish-speaking country, for better pronunciation and language structure. Plus, the language teacher should be good at all four areas of the language (SLRW). If you want to take Spanish lessons in Chicago, you'll find many teachers with these qualifications at TakeLessons!

    5) Why do some students learn better than others?

After observing hundreds of students, I found out the secret is to be "SELF-CONFIDENT." Even for students in Spanish-speaking environments, if they don't believe that someday they could speak fluently, they never do. But any student, even an absolute beginner, can be easily fluent if she or he imagines that she or he can do it and gets proactive and interested. No matter if you make some mistakes. Simply think, "I DO SPEAK SPANISH," and start speaking out loud!

    About Tracy
I have been teaching individual and group lessons for 12+ years. Many of my students have won trophies at the Granquist music competition and also play in local youth orchestras. My own youth string ensemble plays publicly at many popular local venues several times a year. I enjoy exposing my students to the finer points of being a professional musician such as the camaraderie, team work, creativity (creating harmonies, tailoring arrangements to fit student’s level) and of course, stage presence. I am very proud of my students. It is so gratifying to see their confidence build with each new skill they master.

    *** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching is to combine fundamentals with “adventure.” I encourage students to experiment with their instrument and have quite a few budding composers. No two students learn in the same way, so
I don’t use the same strategy for each individual. I believe music should be fun and rewarding. I like to expose students to many different types of music, i.e.; jazz, pop, blues, folk and of course, classical. Students are more likely to practice music that speaks to their personality.

My teaching environment is very laid back. I expect my students to practice, but I don’t read them the riot act if they show up to a lesson not having practiced much the week before. I encourage them to practice more the next week and I give them strategies for how to fit practice time into their schedule along with the most efficient way to practice their pieces.

I encourage parents to sit in on their child’s lesson, but I don’t require it. The more a parent is informed about their child’s goals, the better they are able to assist, support and facilitate the student’s practice. Involved parents contribute greatly to a child’s success.

I love teaching adults too! It is never too late to learn an instrument and the rewards carry over into all aspects of life. As with children, music makes us all smarter. Research proves this. We learn complicated spacial and math skills without even realizing it; we’re having too much fun!

I have annual recitals for private students. I speak Spanish.

    *** Studio Equipment ***
Basement studio finished and separate from house

    *** Travel Equipment ***
Sometimes music. I can refer students to instrument rental or purchase places, but do not have instruments to provide. I can obtain music for the students if they prefer, otherwise I will tell them what and where to buy.

    *** Specialties ***
I use Suzuki and other books for material, but my teaching is more traditional. I use actual bowhold from start. My own invention - pinky AND thumb houses. Music reading is introduced fairly early. A little at a time and it's painless.

I’m an adult with a fair amount of previous musical experience but absolutely none with a stringed instrument. Tracy’s approach for that kind of beginner is ideal. She is firm about establishing sound fundamental technique from day 1 and building on it with practice pieces that provide just the right amount of challenge. She is encouraging and phenomenally patient. If technique problems or incipient bad habits arise as more complicated material is taken on, she is all over them and always has corrective measures to pull out of her (extensive) bag of teaching tricks. I would recommend her to anyone interested in learning a new instrument.

I have more than ten years of experience teaching Spanish and English as a Second Language (ESL). I guarantee my students a successful class thanks to my passion for teaching, my patience and my enthusiasm.

    About Adriana
    Hola,

Thank you for taking the time to read my profile!

Spanish is my native language and I've always been fascinated by its grammar, its phonetics and beauty in general. But learning other languages has also being one of my passions. I am fortunate to be proficient in two languages (Spanish and English), but knowing a few others has given me perspective that became a tool for another of my passions: Teaching!!!

I strongly believe everyone is capable of learning Spanish. That's why I guarantee my students I can teach them not only what they want but also what they need.
Every student is different and that's why I personalize each of my classes. I have 15+ years of experience teaching adults, teens, children, big groups, families, etc., not only in the US but also in Mexico and other countries (online). My teaching method has
been recognized and awarded by organizations like the Erie Neighborhood House in Chicago, and the DuPage County Health Department.
I enjoy teaching because there is no better satisfaction that helping others to accomplish something they considered almost impossible; I will be happy to help you get there!

It is an absolute pleasure to work with Teresa. She really makes an effort
( despite me and my daughter being at different level ) to accommodate both of us. My daughter very much likes talking in Spanish with Teresa. She corrects her right away, which is an excellent learning experience. I love the idea that she gives us a little homework, it makes you sit down and work on your Spanish not only during the class. We really looking forward to keep working with Teresa

From my lessons, students will gain engaging and exciting instruction. Students will use Spanish every time we meet. My aim is to help you meet your goals and help you enjoy it along the way!

    About Jimmy
My name is Jimmy. I have been teaching Spanish for about five years now. I have taught all ages from kindergarten to adults.

As a current teacher, my primary goal is to make sure the students have engaging and fun experiences while learning Spanish. I do not lecture solely on the nuts and bolts of the language but rather allow the student to perform the language in order to learn it.

I do want to make clear that I do teach young children (ages 2-12) but I prefer to teach them in person and at least twice a week. I believe the experience to be more valuable that way.

Additionally, I ask that you and I talk for a while before signing up for lessons with me. I may not be able the person to give you what you need. I want to be sure your needs are met through Take Lessons and I may not be the person that can do that. So, please mess
    age me often.

I am always excited to teach someone this language I love so much.

    ¡Gracias!

Spanish and Art teacher born in Argentina and raised in Spain. I can help you improve your current level of Spanish, help your children with Spanish at school, or teach you Spanish from scratch! Du Page area.

    About Christelle
Bienvenido/a a mi perfil. Me llamo Christelle y soy profesora. ¡Encantada!

I was born in Argentina and spent the first half of my life there and then moved to Spain, where I lived until 2016 when I moved to Chicago area.

While I was still getting my Bachelor's Degree in English Philology in Barcelona, I started working in language schools teaching English to all ages.
I worked as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher for almost 7 years. I have experience with children as young as 1 y/o, one-to-one lessons, small and large groups.

I am currently working as a Spanish and Art teacher in a private school in Oak Brook, Fusion Academy. I work with high schoolers who struggle learning in conventional learning environments.
I also have a Spanish Teacher certification from International House Barcelona and I am an official DELE

    ABOUT MY PRIVATE LESSONS

I can help you improve your current level of Spanish, help your children with Spanish at school, or teach you Spanish from scratch!

    ⋆ LOCATIONS
I live in Bloomingdale and work in the DuPage county area. I meet most of my students in local coffee shops like Starbucks or Panera, but at-home lessons are possible as well.

    ⋆ LESSON FREQUENCY AND LENGTH

It would depend on your goals. School tutoring usually requires less time because Spanish at school is extremely basic and it’s doesn’t really lead to fluency in the language. Anything else needs a greater degree of commitment! I meet my students for one hour once or twice per week AT LEAST.

    ⋆ TEACHING METHOD
For school tutoring I try to adapt to your school’s method. For other types of lessons, I prefer avoiding translation and memorization and make use of effective Spanish textbooks, technology, games and free conversation.

    ⋆ SCHEDULE / AVAILABILITY
I mostly teach Monday-Friday afternoons and weekends in the morning.

    ⋆ RESCHEDULING / CANCELLATIONS / PUNCTUALITY
I understand flexibility is convenient and appreciated, so I allow rescheduling and cancellations in case of emergency or with enough advance notice. I recommend students to stick to their agreed schedule if they want to achieve their goals, even if that means to meet at another time during that same week. If I am already on my way to your lesson and you need to cancel, I will charge for the lesson. If you’re going to be late, please let me know, and I can’t guarantee that I can stay later than our scheduled time.

    ⋆ FIRST LESSON
During our first lesson we will take time to go over any important information, set our goals and answer questions regarding nature of our lessons. We can talk about fees and teaching materials during this lesson as well.

For any more details or any questions, please don’t hesitate contacting me!
