Spanish Resources in San Jose

By Joan B., Spanish Teacher in San Jose

Are you interested in taking Spanish lessons in San Jose? San Jose is a city filled with opportunities for Spanish immersion. With a high percentage of Spanish speakers, the city offers many cultural, linguistic, and educational treats for those interested in learning the Spanish language. As a retired Spanish teacher and a current Spanish tutor, I delight in the Hispanic treasures of San Jose.

One of the ways you might start to connect with other Spanish speakers, both native and non-native, is through Meetup groups. Joining groups such as the Bay Area International Spanish Speakers and the South Bay Spanish Conversation Group is a great way to practice what you're learning in your lessons and make new Spanish-speaking friends.

The East Side of San Jose is definitely an area to check out, as it has a Hispanic focus, with Hispanic residents, restaurants, and shops. One of the many places you can visit includes the Tamale Factory, where you can get a variety of tamales and atole, a traditional drink from Mexico. While there isn't room to eat there, it's definitely worth a stop for the piping hot tamales with generous fillings. The East Side is also jam-packed with many Latin American and Mexican grocery stores, where you can stock up on staples for cooking.

Another great resource for Spanish learners in San Jose is the two bilingual newspapers. La Oferta, offered entirely online at www.laoferta.com, showcases a variety of news in English and Spanish. El Observador, available at www.news.el-observador, also covers a wide variety of topics and also offers giveaways. These newspapers are a great way to stay connected to local happenings and also expand your vocabulary base.

The Biblioteca Lantinoamericana, a branch of the San Jose public library, is another wonderful resource. There is a wide selection of literature and other media in Spanish, as well as a variety of programs that change monthly. You can pick up a calendar of events in person or visit http://www.sjpl.org/biblioteca to see the current events. The Biblioteca is an ideal place to explore the Spanish language in greater breadth both for children and adults.

Once you've checked out some books, why not also visit De La Rosa Latin American Imports? This shop is packed full of folkloric costumes, shoes and Day of the Dead items. Learning to dance a Mexican folk dance or participating in a Day of the Dead celebration are unique ways of integrating your Spanish language knowledge with cultural experiences. So sign up and then make your way to De La Rosa.

With these resources, you will be able to enjoy San Jose in all its cultural splendor. By more deeply exploring the Hispanic cultures that make up San Jose, you will create new friendships, strengthen your language abilities and develop an appreciation for the cultures where Spanish is spoken. So what are you waiting for? Sign up for Spanish lesson in San Jose today!

This was my first lesson and Adrian really put me to work but, at the same time, was quite patient with all my errors.

I was born, raised and college educated in México. I speak with a neutral accent and empathize with learners of a second language, since I have been one most of my life. English is my second language. I have 10 years of experience teaching ESL to adults, and I'm ready to start teaching Spanish to beginner learners. I can customize my lessons to meet the needs and goals of each student. Context based curriculum design experience. Let's work together to help you start speaking basic Spanish in no time!

About Nery
I am a teacher at heart. I like the language arts and the satisfaction that comes with helping others achieve their goals through learning a new language. I am a good communicator and adapt easily to new situations. I creatively customize lessons and instruction to meet the needs of the individual learner. I believe that creating a welcoming, fun and relaxing class environment fosters student’s confidence and a pleasant learning experience.

My professional life started in the corporate world, working as a Human Resources analyst before moving to the USA from my native México. I spent my first years in Texas at home, raising my kids and improving my bilingual skills. Some years later, I volunteered at my parish teaching ESL to adult immigrants. Having greatly enjoyed this activity, I started part time jobs at Harris County Department
of Education and McDonald’s, teaching ESL to a diverse body of adult students. These opportunities allowed me to gain considerable experience and confidence.

Let me help you start or improve your ESL or Spanish skills!

Nery is a dedicated and knowledgeable teacher who tried her hardest to adapt our class to a very diverse body of students. I was her student for 2 semesters and during that time, my conversation, grammar and pronunciation skills improved significantly. Our class was dynamic and fun, I highly recommend her services as an ESL instructor.

¡Saludos! I am a native Spanish speaker with a BA in Spanish and Master's coursework in Education. As a classroom teacher for 12 years and a tutor for 6 years, my experience ranges from Dual-Immersion in Spanish at elementary, middle, and high school level. I want to improve your skills in conversational language, grammar, vocabulary, or Advanced Placement Exams! ¡Vamos!

About Estela
My first language was Spanish, then I formally took and passed the AP Spanish exam in high school. I pursued a bachelor's degree in Spanish Literature and then moved on to teach Dual Immersion in Spanish at the Elementary Level. My fluency also extends to culture. By traveling to Spanish speaking countries I bring added experiences to you!

Students can expect a variety of teaching techniques to improve grammar, conjugating verbs, and tips for vocabulary retention. For AP Spanish exams in Literature and Language, I find that non-native speakers benefit from verbal practice. If you are looking to improve your conversational Spanish, then I have fun and creative ways to enhance your practice.

Let's start where you are and improve from
there. My passion for words is my first love! I look forward to any questions (preguntas) that you may have.
