Spanish Resources in San Jose
By Joan B., Spanish Teacher in San Jose
Are you interested in taking Spanish lessons in San Jose? San Jose is a city filled with opportunities for Spanish immersion. With a high percentage of Spanish speakers, the city offers many cultural, linguistic, and educational treats for those interested in learning the Spanish language. As a retired Spanish teacher and a current Spanish tutor, I delight in the Hispanic treasures of San Jose.
One of the ways you might start to connect with other Spanish speakers, both native and non-native, is through Meetup groups. Joining groups such as the Bay Area International Spanish Speakers and the South Bay Spanish Conversation Group is a great way to practice what you're learning in your lessons and make new Spanish-speaking friends.
The East Side of San Jose is definitely an area to check out, as it has a Hispanic focus, with Hispanic residents, restaurants, and shops. One of the many places you can visit includes the Tamale Factory, where you can get a variety of tamales and atole, a traditional drink from Mexico. While there isn't room to eat there, it's definitely worth a stop for the piping hot tamales with generous fillings. The East Side is also jam-packed with many Latin American and Mexican grocery stores, where you can stock up on staples for cooking.
Another great resource for Spanish learners in San Jose is the two bilingual newspapers. La Oferta, offered entirely online at www.laoferta.com, showcases a variety of news in English and Spanish. El Observador, available at www.news.el-observador, also covers a wide variety of topics and also offers giveaways. These newspapers are a great way to stay connected to local happenings and also expand your vocabulary base.
The Biblioteca Lantinoamericana, a branch of the San Jose public library, is another wonderful resource. There is a wide selection of literature and other media in Spanish, as well as a variety of programs that change monthly. You can pick up a calendar of events in person or visit http://www.sjpl.org/biblioteca to see the current events. The Biblioteca is an ideal place to explore the Spanish language in greater breadth both for children and adults.
Once you've checked out some books, why not also visit De La Rosa Latin American Imports? This shop is packed full of folkloric costumes, shoes and Day of the Dead items. Learning to dance a Mexican folk dance or participating in a Day of the Dead celebration are unique ways of integrating your Spanish language knowledge with cultural experiences. So sign up and then make your way to De La Rosa.
With these resources, you will be able to enjoy San Jose in all its cultural splendor. By more deeply exploring the Hispanic cultures that make up San Jose, you will create new friendships, strengthen your language abilities and develop an appreciation for the cultures where Spanish is spoken. So what are you waiting for? Sign up for Spanish lesson in San Jose today!

ABOUT MY PRIVATE LESSONS
I can help you improve your current level of Spanish, help your children with Spanish at school, or teach you Spanish from scratch!
I live in Bloomingdale and work in the DuPage county area. I meet most of my students in local coffee shops like Starbucks or Panera, but at-home lessons are possible as well.
⋆ LESSON FREQUENCY AND LENGTH
It would depend on your goals. School tutoring usually requires less time because Spanish at school is extremely basic and it’s doesn’t really lead to fluency in the language. Anything else needs a greater degree of commitment! I meet my students for one hour once or twice per week AT LEAST.
⋆ TEACHING METHOD
For school tutoring I try to adapt to your school’s method. For other types of lessons, I prefer avoiding translation and memorization and make use of effective Spanish textbooks, technology, games and free conversation.
⋆ SCHEDULE / AVAILABILITY
I mostly teach Monday-Friday afternoons and weekends in the morning.
⋆ RESCHEDULING / CANCELLATIONS / PUNCTUALITY
I understand flexibility is convenient and appreciated, so I allow rescheduling and cancellations in case of emergency or with enough advance notice. I recommend students to stick to their agreed schedule if they want to achieve their goals, even if that means to meet at another time during that same week. If I am already on my way to your lesson and you need to cancel, I will charge for the lesson. If you’re going to be late, please let me know, and I can’t guarantee that I can stay later than our scheduled time.
⋆ FIRST LESSON
During our first lesson we will take time to go over any important information, set our goals and answer questions regarding nature of our lessons. We can talk about fees and teaching materials during this lesson as well.
For any more details or any questions, please don’t hesitate contacting me!

I hold an MA in Higher Education, which I completed in Spanish while enrolled in courses regarding grammar and syntax. I have experience preparing students for the AP Spanish exam and helping middle schoolers with their regular assignments.
My teaching philosophy is to provide a comprehensive music instruction that is not only about notes and rhythm, but also about connecting performance with theory, technique, collaboration, self-reflection and creativity from an early age. One of the key elements to reinforce the work that I do with my students is to help them notice the possibilities within a piece, which is when the student determines what the piece is “telling them”, what it “looks like”, how could it be improved, and what other instruments they are “hearing.”

How much do you know about New Year's Eve traditions? Here in the U.S., you know what to do: gather your friends and family, turn on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve in the background, and count down from 10 as midnight nears. At the strike of the clock, you know to toast everyone as the fireworks blast off, sing a verse of "Auld Lang Syne," and sneak in a New Year's kiss, if you can! But outside of the United States, did you know there are some much more quirky New Year's Eve tradition … Read More
