Spanish Lessons in Los Angeles: Immersing Yourself en la Cultura Latina

By LeAnna S. – Los Angeles Spanish Teacher

So, are you are thinking about taking Spanish lessons in Los Angeles but don’t quite know where to start? One of the best ways to learn and practice the language is to immerse yourself in the culture. I can’t see how anyone living in Los Angeles can avoid coming into contact with the Latino community. Los Angeles is blessed with such a rich diversity of Spanish speakers from all over the world, giving the city a unique feel with great food, theatre, museums and more. The opportunities to utilize your Spanish in Los Angeles are endless.

Where do I go, besides my Tia Martha’s house to have pan dulce and talk “chisme”, when I’m seeking out Spanish speakers?

Check out some of my favorite places to connect con la cultura latina:

  1. La Plaza Olvera http://www.calleolvera.com/events/ Hands down, one of my favorite places to go in LA is Plaza Olvera, also know as Olvera Street, Calle Olvera, and Placita Olvera. Snuggled between Alameda, Main, Cesar Chavez and the 101 freeway, it is a center of LA’s Mexican American history and culture. Olvera Street is a Mexican marketplace and historical site that has merchants, artisans, restaurants, museums and a plaza for entertainment, performances and ceremonies. They constantly have events for Los Tres Reyes, Cinco de Mayo, and Día de los Muertos. It is a great location to learn about the beginnings of the city of LA, the role that Latinos played in its creation, and of course, to practice your Spanish while checking out the prices of Mexican crafts and listening to live Mariachi music.

  2. Cultural Museums Two museums I recommend are the Plaza Olvera Museum http://www.olvera-street.com/ and La Plaza de Cultura y Artes http://www.lapca.org/ (both conveniently at Plaza Olvera). I enjoy going to these museums because they have a mix of historic Latino/Chicano art and local artwork and because I can get my Latino Art, History and Spanish fix in one visit! One permanent exhibition at Olvera Street Museum has an original outside moral called “La América Tropical” by David Alfaro Siqueiros (one of Diego Rivera’s contemporaries) that is amazing to see. Many of these museums have literature that is bilingual and includes audio narration in Spanish so you can practice your auditory, reading, and comprehension skills! La Plaza has film screenings that are either in Spanish or with subtitles and pertain to the issues in the Latino community. It is a great way to expose yourself to new information while absorbing the language.

  3. Local Restaurants We learn best when language is used in context. Teaching Spanish to elementary school kids, I often did field trips to local restaurants and bakeries and had my kids order their food in Spanish. People are happy to take your order in their native language, and when you are hungry, you’ll be sure to communicate. There are so many great places to get yummy, authentic food but some of my favorite restaurants/food joints have to be: - Sabor Colombiano at 847 S Union Ave, Downtown LA (they have live music on some nights) -Leo’s Taco Truck at the corner of Venice Blvd and La Brea (some of the best tacos ever) -AND my favorite, La Usuluteca at 4014 W Washington Blvd in the Mid City district with some of the best El Salvadoran pupusas, pan dulce and tamales! What better way to use what you’re learning from your Spanish lessons in Los Angeles than by practical application? Spanish plus some delicious food sounds like a win-win to me.

  4. Live Theatre and Performance There is nothing like watching live performance in Spanish, especially when you hear dialogue and get to see human expression. An incredible place for Latino Theatre in Los Angeles, as well as for other ethnicities, is the Los Angeles Theatre Center, located in downtown LA on Spring St and 5th. LATC supports local playwrights, actors and directors by producing new works that address current topics for the greater Latino community. They have a variety of shows as well as theatre and film festivals. They often have plays that are in Spanish or bilingual, so feel free to go to their website, http://thelatc.org/ or call (213) 489-0994 for more information. I really love the work they do and I appreciate finding quality theatre done in Spanish. ¡Viva el teatro!

By now, I think that you are ready to venture out in the heart of Los Angeles and talk up a storm! My favorite places to go are only a small sliver of the taste of Latino culture here in LA. Language is symbiotic with culture and your appreciation can only improve your Spanish skills. So… enjoy exploring la ciudad de Los Angeles and immersing yourself in la cultura latina!

As a native spanish speaker, and a lover of languages, I am always happy to unlock the code to a language and culture for my students. I have a minor in Spanish from the University of Miami and always make sure to tailor my lessons to my students' needs.

About Michelle
VOCAL COACH
Rehabilitating and strengthening voices are two of my top specialties, and each lesson will have specific exercises tailored to helping you transform your voice into the highest and best version of your instrument. I work with singers signed to labels as well as the indie artist just starting to find his/her voice, style, and signature sound. My coaching approach incorporates some of the newest technologies that have shown extraordinary results in breaking down the inner blocks of each artist. It is a tremendously joyful and fulfilling experience to watch as my students really let their instrument shine brightly, boldly, and with an aboslutely stunning groundedness as they discover how powerful they truly are.

MUSICIAN/SONGWRITER/PERFORMER

Poised, energized, and armed with unforgettable performance ability, Michelle G
. is a firework in the artistic arena. Her training began at the young age of 3 with the violin, and a few years later received classes for piano and voice. Excelling in all three, Michelle developed a very passionate and dramatic personality that eventually led her to more dramatic genres such as opera and stage acting. Her aptitude to understand human emotions and relationships gives her a wide spectrum to play in as an actress. There is an organic flow to her interpretations both as an actress and musician that leads the audience to feel her emotional current. Her honest characterizations introduce deeper perspectives on what seems like the ordinary roles and storylines. Amongst the many other leads that she has played, her participation in roles like “Susanna” in The Marriage of Figaro, or “Donna Elvira” in Don Giovanni embody much vibrancy and integrity.
Through the development of her voice as a singer and actress, she has crossed over into other media such as voice over commercial work and vocals for pop/main stream music productions. She has recently participated as a vocalist and violinist in the albums of artists such as international jazz pop artist David Longoria, Latin pop singer Erick Bolivar, Grammy-nominated percussionist Souhail Kaspar, and American Idol’s Seysha. Over the last few years she has unraveled her musical skills as a songwriter/composer/arranger and has even had some small victories acquiring music placements on TV shows (NCIS, short film “Sumtin’ Like Dat”, The Dictator) for herself and some of her colleagues. Her singing can also be heard on the hit tv show "Jane The Virgin", "Castle" and "Shameless" amongst others.

Education
Michelle completed her Associates of Arts for Music/Music Education at the age of 18, and got later graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Miami with a Bachelor's of Arts for Musical Theater and Music Business, as well as from Florida International University with a Master's of Music in Vocal Performance.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor my lessons to my student's needs, style, abilities, and goals. Learning is truly a fun and passionate adventure for me, and my enthusiasm has consistently been a contagious quality :) I love to challenge myself & my students to discover how immense their true potential is, and I create a safe and fun environment to explore such facets.

My curriculum is combination of solid tradition (Suzuki method for piano & violin, and Bel Canto technique for singing) interwoven with pop-culture, and modern influences. Within the first 3-6 months, my students will know the basic building blocks of music - which includes scales, arpeggios, triads, intervals, technique, and performance repertoire; and for my singers this will include proper breath technique, tone placement, support, very often increased vocal range (both high and low), and will feel significantly stronger vocally and more confident getting up to sing.

Yes even I grew up in a Spanish household I took lessons. Speaking it naturally is way different when learning the grammar and the rules. I will guide you through the levels of the correct formal and informal to talk in Spanish..

About Rosita
I have been singing and studying voice for over 23 years since I was a child! I hold a Bachelors from Musicians Institute and other accomplished degrees from American Musical Dramatic Academy to conclude my quest for vocal excellence and the ability to sing in multiple languages ( English, Spanish, Japanese and Italian) I have been lucky enough to study with some of the top teachers in the country and now I bring the experience I have gained directly to you!

I am proud to share my student's vast array of musical successes. From being cast on short anime films and musicals to being accepted into prestigious performing arts academies to conquering the Karaoke scene. My passion for multiple languages and love of music is the desire driving me to share the gifts for teaching young children to open the door to their own musical abilities an
d hidden artistic desires. I am currently writing a musical which will be debuting in 2020. I'm currently the vocal coach/Trainer and choir director at Iglesia Elim Central.

I will make sure my students have fun and help them get in the right track to their musical goals.

Also, I constantly upload videos on Singing, The Spanish Language, and Japanese! So keep Checking in! It ranges on tips and answering the most common questions on those particular subjects!

Also There are discounted rates for worship teams and church choirs. For more information please contact me through the "Ask a Question feature"

*** Lesson Details ***
I do my absolute best to create a positive atmosphere for my students. Even when the students feel frustrated or stressed, it is important to inspire them and give them the fuel that they need. Though I am strict when it comes to homework and their about their studies. Every lesson at the beginning I will review what we learned previously and test them.
then begin with proper breathing technique exercises, the cornerstone of all vocals. We move on to vocal exercises to condition the voice. Then we work on the songs that you are eager to sing!

I will use a piano when doing vocal warm ups and conditioning exercises. Students that play other instruments and accompany themselves when performing (such as a guitar) are encouraged to bring that instrument to their lessons. My goal is for them to gain the knowledge that they need to help reach their artistic goals.
With all my lessons every student will be taught a basic run down of Music Theory. My students will always progress in what they do. They will have the discipline that they need and yet have fun and be filled with inspiration. Which is the most important thing, to be Inspired to do better.

*** Studio Equipment ***
iMac, condensing mic...performing mic, keyboard, mixer...living room of apartment.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I do have a portable keyboard. Though I do expect the student to have their own recording device and karaoke tracks. At Home I do have a studio, and if the students has an iPod or an Mp3 player I can attach it to a device where all of us can hear the tracks. I do have a recording studio as well.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in Musical Theatre, and Pop rock genres. When I teach my students I always have them learn a song of another language whether it's Spanish or Japanese. It helps with diction when they learn a song outside the English Language. Also, It helps them to learn another Language at the same time. Also, I give them a little anatomy class when they are learning how to sing. I give them a model of the Vocal Cords and different areas of the Larynx and which part works for the chest voice and the head voice.

Dr. Cliff, a part-time college and university professor, teacher and tutor with 5 master's and 3 doctoral degrees in a variety of topics: Mathematics, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, MBA, Leadership, Education and Administration.

About Clifford
****Dr Cliff requires that you contact him through the Ask-A-Question feature prior to booking lessons with him. Please be sure to provide him with the following:

'Dr. Cliff,' a part-time college/university professor, teacher and tutor with 5 master's and 3 doctoral degrees in a variety of topics: Mathematics, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, MBA, Leadership, Education and Administration. He has always used proven educational techniques to instruct undergraduate students, graduate students and school children/teenagers (K-12). In addition, Dr. Cliff is a Certified Tutor by American Tutoring Association and National Tutoring Association (Math); he holds California Teaching Credentials in Math (CSET I,II,III), Busin
ess (I,II,III), and Educational Technology/Computers (I,II); he is a Sylvan Certified Teacher in Math and Arts/Language K-12.

Dr. Cliff believes that, although many professors and teachers do an admirable job in the classroom, many students and children do not learn well in traditional institutions. Many students and children don't respond to the assembly line nature of most institutions. He believes that a student's or child's strengths and natural abilities need to be the foundation of learning. Dr. Cliff often warns against a "cookie cutter" approach to educating students, teenagers and children. You or your child is seen as an individual, and natural strengths are identified and built upon. Therefore, individual one-on-one tutoring or help is the key approach to each student who has any challenges difficulties in a given subject.

In today’s environment and economic challenges, with shorter budgets for the education, larger classes sizes and pressure of performing well in all kind of standard tests, I often see many students lacking true knowledge and skills in a given subject, since they cannot get individualized attention during the class session. That’s where a tutor comes into the picture, not only uncover major “holes” in students’ knowledge set but also teach students how to study, how to learn and through proper guidance “fill” those knowledge and skills holes.

I have taken lessons with Ronald since I was 6, I am now 23. In my 17 years of taking lessons I have learned to play piano, sing and am proficient in music theory. In the more recent years I have even had the opportunity to teach music through Ronald. Throughout the years, I have experienced and witnessed the patience and kindness Ronald consistently shows his students. He encourages his students to become better and shares in their enthusiasm due to their accomplishments. Ronald genuinely cares about his students and is dedicated to making sure his students improve. I fully recommend Ronald for students who have parents who want to be involved in the learning process and especially for young children who are just starting out. Ronald works well with families, includes parents every step of the way and is very patient with young students helping them learn in an open and encouraging environment.

I will teach you the most important part of the language so that you can start speaking right away. There are certain words that we use 80 percent of the time. Wouldn’t you want to learn these words first? If your looking for someone who’s going to grill you on speaking with a perfect accent that’s not me. What I want is for my students to be able to enter into a conversation and have a true conversation with a native speaker. A conversation that had they not learned the essentials to the language, they would’ve never been able to have had before. I am not going to teach you what words need an accent mark, when to use the subjunctive, etc. that stuff is still confusing to me. I want you to become an effective Spanish communicator plain and simple. That is my goal.

About Scott
Hey! My name is Scotty and I want to help you to have fun learning Spanish. Spanish is really fun and easy to learn if you learn it the right way. I’ll guide you into becoming an effective Spanish communicator. My goal is for you to feel comfortable engaging in conversations with Spanish speakers. I've been living in the States for the last 8 years and currently reside in Los Angeles! I have endless stories and information about the entertainment industry and can't wait to get to meet with you!

About Carla
Hey there! My name is Carla, I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina and have been living in the States for the past 8 years. I moved to Miami, FL when I was 18 and gained my English certification from the University of Miami! After a few years of Floridian humidity I decided to move to Los Angeles, CA to pursue my career in the Performing Arts (Yes! I sing, act, dance and play some piano!) I have Spanish speaking friends from all over the world so I am familiar with the different dialects, slang and fun words that differ form country to country!

Can't wait to get to meet you and talk about pretty much everything you feel interested about! And get ready to learn some fun Argentinian Spanish!
