Spanish Lessons in Los Angeles: Immersing Yourself en la Cultura Latina

By LeAnna S. – Los Angeles Spanish Teacher

So, are you are thinking about taking Spanish lessons in Los Angeles but don’t quite know where to start? One of the best ways to learn and practice the language is to immerse yourself in the culture. I can’t see how anyone living in Los Angeles can avoid coming into contact with the Latino community. Los Angeles is blessed with such a rich diversity of Spanish speakers from all over the world, giving the city a unique feel with great food, theatre, museums and more. The opportunities to utilize your Spanish in Los Angeles are endless.

Where do I go, besides my Tia Martha’s house to have pan dulce and talk “chisme”, when I’m seeking out Spanish speakers?

Check out some of my favorite places to connect con la cultura latina:

  1. La Plaza Olvera http://www.calleolvera.com/events/ Hands down, one of my favorite places to go in LA is Plaza Olvera, also know as Olvera Street, Calle Olvera, and Placita Olvera. Snuggled between Alameda, Main, Cesar Chavez and the 101 freeway, it is a center of LA’s Mexican American history and culture. Olvera Street is a Mexican marketplace and historical site that has merchants, artisans, restaurants, museums and a plaza for entertainment, performances and ceremonies. They constantly have events for Los Tres Reyes, Cinco de Mayo, and Día de los Muertos. It is a great location to learn about the beginnings of the city of LA, the role that Latinos played in its creation, and of course, to practice your Spanish while checking out the prices of Mexican crafts and listening to live Mariachi music.

  2. Cultural Museums Two museums I recommend are the Plaza Olvera Museum http://www.olvera-street.com/ and La Plaza de Cultura y Artes http://www.lapca.org/ (both conveniently at Plaza Olvera). I enjoy going to these museums because they have a mix of historic Latino/Chicano art and local artwork and because I can get my Latino Art, History and Spanish fix in one visit! One permanent exhibition at Olvera Street Museum has an original outside moral called “La América Tropical” by David Alfaro Siqueiros (one of Diego Rivera’s contemporaries) that is amazing to see. Many of these museums have literature that is bilingual and includes audio narration in Spanish so you can practice your auditory, reading, and comprehension skills! La Plaza has film screenings that are either in Spanish or with subtitles and pertain to the issues in the Latino community. It is a great way to expose yourself to new information while absorbing the language.

  3. Local Restaurants We learn best when language is used in context. Teaching Spanish to elementary school kids, I often did field trips to local restaurants and bakeries and had my kids order their food in Spanish. People are happy to take your order in their native language, and when you are hungry, you’ll be sure to communicate. There are so many great places to get yummy, authentic food but some of my favorite restaurants/food joints have to be: - Sabor Colombiano at 847 S Union Ave, Downtown LA (they have live music on some nights) -Leo’s Taco Truck at the corner of Venice Blvd and La Brea (some of the best tacos ever) -AND my favorite, La Usuluteca at 4014 W Washington Blvd in the Mid City district with some of the best El Salvadoran pupusas, pan dulce and tamales! What better way to use what you’re learning from your Spanish lessons in Los Angeles than by practical application? Spanish plus some delicious food sounds like a win-win to me.

  4. Live Theatre and Performance There is nothing like watching live performance in Spanish, especially when you hear dialogue and get to see human expression. An incredible place for Latino Theatre in Los Angeles, as well as for other ethnicities, is the Los Angeles Theatre Center, located in downtown LA on Spring St and 5th. LATC supports local playwrights, actors and directors by producing new works that address current topics for the greater Latino community. They have a variety of shows as well as theatre and film festivals. They often have plays that are in Spanish or bilingual, so feel free to go to their website, http://thelatc.org/ or call (213) 489-0994 for more information. I really love the work they do and I appreciate finding quality theatre done in Spanish. ¡Viva el teatro!

By now, I think that you are ready to venture out in the heart of Los Angeles and talk up a storm! My favorite places to go are only a small sliver of the taste of Latino culture here in LA. Language is symbiotic with culture and your appreciation can only improve your Spanish skills. So… enjoy exploring la ciudad de Los Angeles and immersing yourself in la cultura latina!

I have experience teaching Spanish through Music. It helps the student to have fun while learning.

About Alexandra
With a degree in Voice studies from the Los Angeles College of Music, and 15 years of coaching, I am able to give my students the understanding of the voice as an instrument and the importance of practicing to acquire the skills that are required to maintain longevity as a singer.

During the lesson the student will also learn to interpret and perform songs in any style they choose to work on.

*** Travel Equipment ***
i can provide the keyboard when giving singing lessons.

*** Specialties ***
The method that I use is called "Freedom of natural voice production". It's a method that teaches the student to get rid of all the tension, bad habits, beliefs that stand in the way of the tone. This freedom allows the tone to come freely from our diaphragm, through the cords up to the head. In this method we use the air as a second eleme
nt, that vibrates the vocal cords and resonates them in the head.

I have taught Jazz, Latin, R&B styles.

Gerardo was fantastic. The soccer lesson was for my 12 year old great nephew. My own nephew, the 12 year old's father, was also there. From Gerardo's opening "hello" we knew that we were with an incredible teacher. First, Gerardo is a true master of soccer. He plays for SM College. His ability is impressive. Second, he knows how to teach. Many great players are not great teachers. Gerardo is. He knows how to motivate and bring out the best in the student. He is friendly, bright, respectful, and a true joy to work with. My nephew is a soccer manager and coach himself, and he was thoroughly impressed with Gerardo. I recommend Gerardo enthusiastically and without hesitation. If you need a soccer lesson, you will not find anyone better.

I have been learning Spanish for almost 10 years, and have been lucky enough to study abroad in Spain, where I took immersive language and culture classes. I took advanced literature classes and lived with a host family where I practiced using my Spanish daily. I am adept in Spanish grammar and verb conjugations and can also help with conversation skills.

About Janis
Hi there! I'm Janis, a recent graduate from the University of Southern California. While at USC, I studied neuroscience, but beyond my science curriculum, I took many literature and music classes.
I love learning about all types of topics and people, and I want to bring this energy to my students. From a very young age, I have loved creating lesson plans for my younger siblings. This developed into more formal tutoring and mentoring roles through middle school, high school, and college.
I have experience teaching everything from beginner piano to young children, to science presentation skills to international teaching assistants.
Using passion, compassion, and a positive energy, I would love to help you achieve your learning goals! :)

She discovered how best to motivate each child and customized her approach. Janis is much better than the previous two teachers in London.

I focus on the areas and concepts you struggle with most, and base my teaching off of the textbook or worksheets you are using in class so you are ready for the tests. There are various exercises I do with you to help you with your retention. I'm also a very patient guy and can work with you whatever your learning pace is. :)

About Jose
I grew up speaking Spanish and have been tutoring my peers and translating for years. It has been 3 years now in the Los Angeles area. Most of my students are in high school, and I assist them with homework and test preparation. I quiz my students repeatedly to increase their retention and to make sure they are ready for test day. One of the methods I use breaks down the language word for word and phrase by phrase to make it easier for people learning Spanish to understand it and respond. I also help several adults learn how to speak the language fluently, focusing on common conversation and real life situations that are encountered daily, so that they can begin speaking right away and gain confidence.
