I started teaching in Farsi (Persian) in 2013, when I taught a mini-course offered at Dartmouth College for beginner learners. From then on, I have continued to teach Farsi in private and semi-private settings.
Since written Farsi and spoken Farsi slightly differ, my approach to teaching is to first attack spoken Farsi, using transliterations, before moving on to written Farsi. I find this method, being closer to natural process of language acquisition, to give students more motivation and confidence, as it is more dynamic, moving quicker and swifter.
Note I teach only Persian, not Dari.
As a teacher, I try to cater each class to my student's individual needs and interests. Being bilingual myself, I am a strong believer that language and culture (and food!) are intertwined, and to learn any language, it is best to immerse oneself as deeply as possible. I started teaching ESL in

Farsi, also called Persian, is a Western Iranian language which belongs to the Indo-Iranian subdivision of the Indo-European language family. An estimated 70 million native speakers (mostly located in Iran) and a total of about 110 million people worldwide speak Farsi.
The official language of Iran, it's also commonly spoken in Tajikistan and Afghanistan. It's a pluricentric language, which means it has multiple modern standards. As a result, mutually intelligible versions of Farsi are spoken in different locations including Iranian Persian (Iran), Dari (Afghanistan), and Tajik (Tajikistan). Farsi has two different writing systems: the Persian alphabet (derived from Arabic script) and the Tajik alphabet (derived from Cyrillic). The alphabet you learn depends on your teacher and
the dialect of Farsi you wish to study.
The United States Foreign Service Institute (FSI) rates Farsi as a Category III language, which means it's considered hard for native English speakers to learn. Due to Farsi's significant cultural and linguistic differences from English, most students require an average of 44 weeks or 1,100 hours to reach proficiency. Don't let Farsi's Category III ranking scare you away! There are plenty of reasons why learning Farsi's a good idea. Plus, you'll learn fast, if you study with a private Farsi tutor.
Why Learn to Speak Farsi?
An important language, Farsi's central to communication in the Middle East and Central Asia. It's spoken in countries where the United States has significant political and economic interests. Iran has the second-largest economy in the Middle East, and the Strait of Hormuz acts as the primary conduit for much of the world's oil supply. As a result, learning to speak Farsi will open you up to a variety of professional opportunities in government positions (military, intelligence, and diplomatic), translator jobs, and even working for private businesses.
Although it's rated a category III language, Farsi is one of the easier Middle Eastern languages for native English speakers to learn because it features no genders and no verb irregularities. Small communities throughout the region (not just in the three aforementioned countries) also speak Farsi. So, it provides a more accessible language route into the region, its culture, and many opportunities.

For example, Farsi lessons for adults differ greatly in terms of content and teaching style from Farsi classes for children. In private lessons, you'll stay motivated and have fun, while learning a new language at a pace that's comfortable for you.
