We love Ms Loudel! My daughter is always excited for her tagalog lessons with Ms Lou. I picked Ms Lou because her profile says she used to be a Filipino/Tagalog teacher in the Philippines and that's important to me. Her being a real tagalog teacher makes perfect sense for my daughter to learn tagalog the way we actually learn it in school. I highly recommend Ms Lou! She is the best!

Loudel is a great teacher. She makes the lessons easy to follow and understand. However, she seems to have a difficult time with scheduling from my experience. I paid for classes on a certain day, but there were some of those days where she has to cancel and reschedule the classes multiple times. We then switched the day to a different day and so far the new day seems to be working out great. Loudel is very knowledgeable on Tagalog and she is a great teacher to learn Tagalog from.
Isabel
Loudel was a fantastic Tagalog teacher! In addition to basic beginner phrases, she taught me about important grammar structures and even imparted mini-history and cultural lessons. She made me feel very comfortable even when I sometimes messed up my pronunciation, and was incredibly encouraging throughout the lessons. I can’t wait to take more Tagalog classes with Lou!

"Loudel was such a patient teacher when I was learning Tagalog. She catered her lessons to me, as she was aware that I grew up with tagalog speaking parents. In addition, growing up as a Filipino-American, she provided me with a short history lesson in the beginning to help me understand how the language was derived. I really appreciated this! Loudel is also patient and sends you lessons and documents to use and practice with! I would recommend Loudel to anyone who is trying to learn Tagalog!"

"I had a wonderful experience learning Tagalog with Loudel. I can tell she has a passion for teaching and is very patient. The lessons and practice exercises she sends me have been very helpful and informative. She helps in making sure I pronounce the words correctly and allows you a chance to help formulate example sentences to further your understanding of the lesson. I also liked learning a little bit about Filipino culture during the lessons. As someone who is half-Filipino, I have always wanted to learn Tagalog. I am glad I found this website and instructor to help me achieve that goal. Thanks to Loudel's help, I now feel more confident in speaking and reading in Tagalog."

"Loudel is a natural teacher. She not only teaches in a way that is easy to understand and build on, but gives much needed insight into the historical aspect of how Tagalog has evolved in your first lesson. Her knowledge of how you can connect the grammatical rules of English and Spanish are also beneficial in helping make connections. In order to get the most from your lessons, immerse yourself in the resources she sends you ahead of your lesson. More importantly, relax and enjoy your session! Learn Tagalog Today! Try Filipino Language Classes

Tagalog is a fascinating language with a rich and beautiful history. The most popular dialect of Tagalog, known as Filipino, is a popular subject for language enthusiasts around the world. Thanks to TakeLessons, those looking for Filipino language classes can connect with teachers around the globe with a click of a button.

The word Tagalog translates to “river dweller.” One of several languages developed on the islands and coastlines of the Pacific Ocean, Tagalog is a member of the Austronesian language family. Tagalog was specifically developed and spoken by the people who inhabited the islands centrally located in the Philippines.

The Philippines was ruled by the Spanish from 1521 to 1898. Its people fought for their independence, and Tagalog was used as a way to unify t

he islands of the Philippines. Tagalog was named the country's official language in 1897.

Tagalog is still considered the nation's official language. Today however, “Filipino” refers to the standard dialect of Tagalog spoken nation-wide. The primary difference between Tagalog and Filipino is that Tagalog can be used to refer to a collection of different dialects that are spoken by different groups of people in the Philippines. Unless you specifically seek out a specific dialect, if you learn Tagalog today, you're likely to study the nationally spoken standard version, which is called Filipino.

Why Learn to Speak Tagalog?

Over 7,600 islands make up the Philippines. With so many people separated by so much water, it's no surprise that the nation speaks a variety of 183 languages, and only eight of them are non-indigenous. Filipino, the standardized version of Tagalog is the one tongue that unifies everyone in the island nation. The popularity of the dialect has also skyrocketed the demand for Filipino language lessons around the globe.

Today, about 20 million people speak Tagalog natively, and 45 million speak the national version, Filipino. Around the world, you'll find large groups of Tagalog speakers. Thanks to major populations of immigrants, about 1.6 million people living in the United States and 400,000 in Canada speak Tagalog. In fact, it's the fifth-most spoken language in North America. Behind English and Spanish, Tagalog is also the third-most commonly spoken language in the states of California, Nevada, and Washington.

The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) classifies Tagalog as a Category III language, which means it's considered difficult to learn for native English speakers. On average, the FSI estimates 44 weeks or 1,100 hours of study for students to reach proficiency. Although Tagalog features significant cultural and linguistic differences from English, it does use the Latin alphabet, which makes it easier to absorb.

The Best Way to Learn Tagalog and Topics You'll Study

There are a lot of options available for students who want to learn Tagalog. With an online search, you'll find free Tagalog classes and ways to study in a larger class setting. The best way to learn a new language, however, is by studying with a private teacher.

For example, Tagalog lessons for children differ greatly in terms of content from adult classes. Online language lessons have revolutionized the way that teachers and students stay connected. Everything from basic Filipino language lessons to advanced Tagalog lessons can take place via webcam, making it possible to study with an expert from anywhere in the globe. This is a great option for busy parents and kids who appreciate the convenience and scheduling flexibility of online lessons!
