About Makala
I have loved music as long as I can remember. I know its cliche© to say so, but it's true! :)

For me, having parents of different ethnicity and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. The force of this crayon box of rhythms and sounds captivated and affected me so much that it is the key experience that I draw from in making my own music today.

I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska (a small town in the center of the state) so my only option for entertainment and fun was getting involved in the arts! I start
ed performing at a very young age as both a dancer and a musician. I studied classical ballet, modern dance, hip hop and street dance, and world dance traditions throughout my formative years, which helped me to gain rhythmical fluency. I started my formal music training when I began to play the cello. From then on, I was hooked on the sound and I immersed myself in music as much as I could; performing, competing, working in as many musical groups and productions as possible (as both a vocalist and cellist), and even teaching.

I moved to Seattle in 2003 to study opera at Cornish College of the arts, only to later change my major to Jazz, and then again to Latin music studies. Since graduating from Cornish in 2007, with my Bachelor of Music degree, I have been actively and diligently working in the local music scene; performing and recording with artists and groups of many different styles. Everything from various Latin genres, to Rock, to R&B/Soul, to Hip Hop, and Jazz. Through my music, I aim to reach out to people of all cultures. I also aim to teach my own students with the hope that they too can discover the same continuous love of music that I have grown to feel (and still am growing to feel) over the years. :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
88 key piano, cello, various percussion instruments, guitars, ukulele, library, computer, lessons are given in a private studio.

*** Specialties ***
As far as voice goes, I teach all genres and styles but I personally specialize in the Latin genres. I teach all aspects of the music; rhythm, harmony, theory. I even teach performance; how to work with a band in real-time communication, song communication (or story telling as I like to call it), and developing ones own personal style. I believe that there is much more to singing than just vocal technique alone, so I believe in teaching musical fundamentals and functions so that my students will not only be considered vocalists, but competent musicians.

Raised in largely bilingual household. B.A. in Spanish from UW (cum laude). English fluency slightly stronger. Extremely high level Spanish proficiency although the minutiae within humor can sometimes be lost. Excellent for those who need help with pronunciation, grammar (clarification of grammatical rules like the difference between a direct object and an indirect object, etc.), conjugation, and conversation.

About David
Many years of drum instruction with students who have learned best with alternative learner-centered approaches including: extreme patience, slow to fast repetition of patterns and exercises, focused breathing, as well as sight-reading, rhythm and ear training. Students with: Asperger's, Autism, Dyslexia and related states have benefited greatly.

DAVID IS AN OUTSTANDING TEACHER IN EVERY RESPECT. HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH SEEMS EXCELLENT, AND HIS INTEREST IN THIS LANGUAGE IS CLEARLY VERY STRONG. THIS ALLOWS CLOSE ANALYSIS OF SPANISH, AND STANDS AS A SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT TO THE DIDACTIC PROCESS. IN TURN THIS PROMOTES A SPIRIT OF LEARNING IN CLASS WHICH IS INFORMATIVE AND GOOD FUN. FINALLY HIS KNOWLEDGE OF SPANISH/ENGLISH COGNATES AND INDO-EUROPEAN ROOTS IS UNUSUALLY BROAD, WHICH MAKES LEARNING SPANISH WITH HIM EASY AND ENTERTAINING. I BELIEVE DAVID HAS A TRUE VOCATION FOR TEACHING, AND I HOPE I CAN GO ON WITH LESSONS WITH HIM FOR SOME TIME TO COME.

I teach in a way that is as focused on the grammar as you want to be. I prefer conversational classes, but for many in traditional classes it is the grammar that they are not understanding.

About Bryce
Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. -Ben Franklin

An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. - Ben Franklin

The unconventional method of teaching begins here

I am a Spanish Language Consultant

I am a concierge tutor meaning that I make every meeting personalized for you. Everyone learns a language differently. For some they just want to speak. For others they want to learn to read or write. And some want to do it all. Either way I will do everything in my power to assure that happens.

Where did I learn Spanish?
I took it in high sch
ool like all of us and failed out in the second year. Then seven years later I took a class in Bellevue College and got the best grade in the class. Soon after the class finished I moved to Bogotá, Colombia for a year and half where I really improved my level to near native status. When I was a kid in high school I did not see how cool it is to be able to speak another language nor did I care. However, now it was a defining point in my life and something that no one can take away from me.

My schedule is also very flexible giving you plenty of freedom over when to meet.

I am connected to a network of native speakers who are all my very close friends who can be included in the sessions when the time is right or whenever you may like.

I have been a Spanish Consultant since 2011 and love doing it. I really get fired up when students begin to take off on their own with the language with less and less of my help.

I don't think you will find a more passionate tutor.

Students who will succeed with me can be of any age but should have these traits if they wish to excel:
Discipline
Not afraid to make mistakes
Positive attitudes
Open mind
Willingness to think outside of the box

Thank you and have a beautiful day now

I took 8 years of Spanish classes and lived in Ecuador where I used Spanish on a daily basis.

My teaching philosophy is to help students engage in learning. I find that a personal connection to new information makes it more engaging and meaningful, and students remember it better too. It's also more fun.

That being said, if learning is more readily achieved for your student through other methods, we will do whatever works best. I cater to results, because my ultimate goal is the student's success.

About Joshua
I am a tutor who earned a music teaching degree, substitute taught, and didn't become a school teacher. I held professional tech retail jobs and am supplementing my life with my passion - education.

Whatever subject or instrument I teach, I celebrate students' successes; and I enjoy helping learners have new aha moments.

The majority of my students take guitar, bass guitar, or Spanish lessons. I am an educator and help my students learn other skills and knowledge sets too.

I went to Ohio State University for college, earned a BA in Music Education, and graduated Cum Laude. I also spen
t 4 years in the Ohio State University Marching Band.

Through my healing journey, I've developed patience, insight, and understanding for my students' learning processes.

I'm excited to help you incorporate new skills into your life!

I'm a professor of Spanish at Seattle University and North Seattle College. I've been teaching Spanish for over 20 years. My approach to teaching is to be patient, compassionate, and encouraging. I believe language learning should be enjoyable, not a chore. My students tell me they look forward to their lessons. I tailor my lessons to your needs, whether it is grammar, pronunciation, or vocabulary. We will use videos, songs, online exercises, and articles to improve your skills. More advanced students may choose to use films and books. I look forward to hearing from you!

About Seva
I'm a professor of Spanish at Seattle University and North Seattle College. Languages are my hobby, passion, and profession--I speak seven languages. This often makes it easier for me to cater to my students because I understand the challenges of learning a language!

In 1990, at the age of 23, I moved to California and my Spanish obsession began. By the time I took my first course in Spanish I was nearly fluent — I ended up tutoring my classmates. I took various Spanish language and literature courses at Diablo Valley College (1991-1993) and the University of California, Berkeley (1993-1994).
In 1994, I travelled to Mexico as a student and ended up working at the UC Berkeley exchange center, Centro de enseñanza para extranjeros at the Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). In 1995, I taught Spanish at a language school Instituto Angloamericano. In 2002, I began my MA in Hispanic Studies (Language and Literature) and teaching courses at the University of Washington. Upon completion, I started teaching Spanish at North Seattle College in 2005. At North Seattle College, I have taught regular academic, hybrid online and continuing education classes. Since 2016, I've been teaching Spanish courses at Seattle University. I've lived in Mexico and traveled extensively through Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, and Spain.

Here is a brief testimonial from one of my many students: "This class was amazing. Easily the best class I have ever had. Seva incorporated humor, visual illustrations and personal touches to his class, which allowed me to learn Spanish on a whole new level. I cannot tell you how nervous I was to take Spanish, as it was the only class I have ever failed in high school. Spanish is now my favorite class."

My latest passion is traveling the Camino de Santiago in Spain—I've made the trek twice and anticipate doing it again.

Whether learning Spanish is an academic requirement or your bucket project, I will make this process more enjoyable and productive. I look forward to helping you.

First of all, Seva is a polyglot with an astounding store of academic knowledge, which gives him a perfect background to understand the needs of the individual student. This creates an aura of how glamorous the student can become learning another language. This assessment comes from a person who has studied Latin, Greek, English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, and dabbled with Spanish. He makes you want to speak, to understand the people, the culture, and the history. He makes you want to learn without pressure/ lose the fear of not performing. His assignments are appropriate within that framework. In short, he is my “dream” teacher.

There were several things I really appreciated about this class, one was the cultural information that was shared. I think the key to learning a new language, is learning how they use the language, how they culturally express themselves, and how it's different from what we currently know in our language, and Seva did a really good job at integrating this into the lessons. I also really appreciated all the extra tools he have us to learn outside of our classroom. I also never felt super uncomfortable if I didn't know the answer, as in my pass language classes with different teachers, the guilt was unreal if I didn't know an answer and I think this took away from the learning experience. I would definitely recommend Seva’s class to others, and look forward to taking his class again in the future.
