Living in France for 8 years now and having completed my Master's in teaching French as a second and foreign language at l'Université de Lyon 2, I am more than capable of helping you learn a language that I have loved for years. I've been teaching French for 7 years and my students have gone on to develop a deep love of French culture and language! Within the first few lessons, you'll start speaking simple sentences and as time goes on, you'll be able to conjugate like a pro! I also specialize in French phonetics so that you will be able to pronounce everything correctly.

I like to keep my lessons fun and interactive and I pull resources from many different places. Currently the books I'm using primarily in instruction are: Latitudes, Alter Ego, Tex's French Grammar, Liberté, and Supermax (for kids). I also use many online exercises, songs, videos, and articles to supplement for listening and reading exercises.

Due to my enthusiasm for Foreign languages, I am fluent in French and can read Russian, German, and Spanish. French was my minor and chemistry was my major. I was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society based on my achievements in the fields of chemistry and French. I have also enhanced my fluency in French by traveling abroad, including residing in France at the University of Poitiers as well as traveling abroad to Paris, Brussels, and Calais. I look forward to spreading my enthusiasm for foreign languages to others.

SPECIAL AREAS: IB study and exams, comprehensible input

GROUPS: Small groups are possible, please let me know how many you wish to have in your group and I can make the appropriate arrangements.

I am a professional public school teacher, and have been tutoring and teaching since 2013. I have worked primarily with teens and adults, but welcome all ages to join me in their learning adventure.

I'm happy to say that I am a very flexible teacher. Together we will find the best way for you to learn and feel successful in French. Specifically, I speak of two main options: traditional school learning and a method called comprehensible input.

*Traditional learning is something you're probably familiar with and may have experienced in learning a lesson. This is the textbook, worksheet, grammar repetition version of learning. For some people, this works for them. This is how I learned French, and some find success with it. However, if you've ever felt this wasn't the best method for you (or ...

"Philippe is truly a phenomenal instructor. His classes are thoughtfully constructed and carefully tailored to his student's needs. He constantly assessed my strengths and weaknesses and routinely made adjustments to our agenda to help me progress. I felt like not a single moment was wasted in any of our sessions.

On a personal level, I found Philippe to be extremely likable and a very pleasant person. Some of our most enjoyable class moments were just discussing life experiences and sharing views on the world. He has a lot of wisdom to impart beyond simply teaching the French language.

Perhaps the most helpful insight into who Philippe is as a teacher- and as a person- occurred when our class had to be cancelled because a new Federal Holiday was approved the night before and we were not authorized to work on an official holiday. Given the short notice of the cancellation, the class hours would still be counted and he would be paid in full for the day despite not actually teaching. Knowing my final assessment was coming up the following week, Philippe still worked with me for nearly 6 hours that day, pro bono, simply out of the kindness of his heart and his commitment to his students' success. This truly shows what kind of teacher he is.

When I took my language assessment at the end of our sessions together, I significantly exceeded expectations based on the number of class hours I took. I fully attribute this to the quality of instruction I received from Philippe. I recommend him in the strongest of terms."

"I first met Philppe while I was a French student taking one on one classes at DLS during a 6 month period. He was not my instructor but we crossed paths daily, as his office was next door to the classroom I used. He was always testing my skills and offering assistance where he saw necessary. At the end of my 6 month course, I continued on with more job training that allowed me an additional 40 hours of French so that it was fresh on the mind prior to arriving at my next post. Philippe was my instructor during that period, which is something I will always be grateful for. Due to my foundation in French, we did not need to cover many basics but instead created a lesson plan that involved widening my knowledge of the local culture and politics in the country of my future assignment. He taught me how to express my opinions while casually conversing in French (which has proven to be invaluable in my line of work). He challenged me to expand my vocabulary in numerous areas while incorporating more advanced, sophisticated grammar when appropriate. Philippe was a great instructor and mentor. I am grateful for the time I was able to learn from him and look forward to refreshing my skills with him in the future."

"Philiippe was a great French instructor. I enjoyed that he focused the class on learning the fundamentals of conjugating verbs and using the appropriate tenses. The format of the class encouraged a lot of interaction with other students which allowed us to practice what we learned. The most important part was that Philippe made learning fun. I enjoyed the class."
