Spanish Lessons in Minneapolis/St. Paul

By Cheyenne J. - Minneapolis Spanish Teacher

So you're a Spanish student that's taken a few days, weeks, or even years of Spanish lessons in Minneapolis, and perhaps you're wondering, "When will I be fluent in Spanish?" The simple answer is, the more time you dedicate to it, the sooner you'll be a pro! And with more than 37 million Spanish speakers in the U.S. and over 170,000 in Minnesota, you can bet that mastering Spanish will be a major boost for you in college, career, and beyond!

In addition to learning the basics of Spanish vocabulary and grammar - which any TakeLessons tutor can help you master in a matter of weeks or even days - the best way to hit the accelerator on your Spanish competency is to immerse yourself in the language!

For young Spanish learners (ages 0-14) check out Wild Rumpus Bookstore (http://www.wildrumpusbooks.com) for a wide selection of Spanish learning and Spanish language books! A beautiful fantasy world of books and friendly animals, this part-bookstore, part-zoo is truly a fantastic experience for readers young and old. Their friendly staff will happily direct you to their unique Spanish section.

Once you've picked up the basics, head to Mercado Central (http://visitlakestreet.com/directory/category/mercado-central), where you'll be surrounded by Spanish speakers and an endless variety of shops, restaurants, and Spanish-owned businesses. Check out their website for a complete listing of the businesses inside this marvelous maze.

This vivacious marketplace of 45 businesses is a gem of the Lake Street community, and by supporting these local businesses you're helping a part of your own Minneapolis community continue and thrive. At Libreria La Paz you'll find a treasure trove of adult books and novels in Spanish. Reading books you enjoy in Spanish is one of the best ways to improve your Spanish skills! When you get hungry, be sure to stop by a personal favorite of mine, La Loma Tamales, whose handmade Mexican tamales alone are worth the whole trip! For an added challenge, ask for assistance, order food, or make purchases in Spanish, but be sure to look up a few related words and phrases first if you're not sure how to say things like "¿Cuánto cuesta?" (How much does this cost? )!

Another great way to build Spanish confidence is to socialize with other Spanish speakers in one of Minneapolis' Spanish Meetup groups (http://spanish.meetup.com/cities/us/mn/minneapolis). For intermediate and advanced Spanish speakers looking to improve their fluency, the Minneapolis Spanish Language Meetup group, or the Minneapolis/St. Paul Spanish Conversation Group might be for you! For a more laid back adult social experience, try the Spanish Happy Hour Group.

Minneapolis Community Education offers Spanish language and conversation classes, and registration is currently open for Summer Youth and Adult Programs (http://www.mplscommunityed.com/index.cfm?method=ClassListing.ClassListingDisplay&int_category_id=1&int_sub_category_id=1&int_catalog_id=)! MCE also offers the Howe Summer Spanish Language Camp for youth grades 1 through 8.

Watching Spanish performances, movies, and television shows can also greatly improve your Spanish skills and can accelerate the progress you’re achieving from Spanish lessons in Minneapolis! Casa de España en Minnesota (http://www.casadeespanamn.org/) is an amazing resource for authentic cultural events, all of which are guaranteed to be a thoroughly immersive experience.

Check out performances at the Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre and School (http://www.zorongo.org/events.html) to experience traditional flamenco concerts and events.

Interested in learning to make mouthwatering Spanish cuisine? Kitchen Window features group classes by talented chefs that frequently offer instruction oneverything from tapas to traditional hispanic cuisine. (http://www.kitchenwindow.com/browse.cfm/all-classes/2,50.html)

With such a multitude of diverse experiences to choose from to get you engaging in Spanish dialogue, you'll be sure to find your niche! When learning any new language the keys are to practice a little every day and be patient with yourself. You'll make a few mistakes along the way, but the fun you'll have taking Spanish lessons in Minneapolis and exploring the city’s vibrant Spanish community will heftily outweigh the difficulties. If you mix in a little variety by practicing speaking, reading, writing, and listening to Spanish as a part of your daily routine you will improve your Spanish faster than you ever thought possible. Pretty soon you'll even be dreaming in Spanish!

I have spent four years studying Spanish in academic settings and have traveled extensively to Latin America, learning Spanish on the way. I have a wide vocabulary and a thorough understanding of grammar.

About Michael
I am a classically trained and professional musician who has worn many different musical hats over the years. I began playing drums when I was 14, in Houston, TX with Craig LeMay, and since then I have learned many different string and world instruments. I studied music theory and vocal performance at the Florence University of the Arts in Italy, taken sitar lessons from Mita Nag in Kolkatta, India, and jazz performance in Austin, TX with Joey Colarusso. I have played in many different bands over the years, such as accompanying Michael Kiwanuka with the musical saw, accompanying Katie Sachs with the musical saw, playing bass guitar with Halaska and DJing private events with Spacecraft Entertainment. I have been teaching music to special education students, in Austin public schools, and foster children with Kids in a New Groove. I have als
o built and modified many of my own instruments and ready to teach you some quirky musical production skills as well. I believe listening and being adaptable to an individual student's needs are the keys to teaching anyone to express themselves through music.

After studying Spanish for 2 years at the university level and extensive travel to Latin America I am fluent in Spanish in both the academic and conversational sides of the language.

Michael was an excellent teacher. Very relaxed, patient and understanding. He taught me a combination of songs and some music theory that was reasonably challenging to practice at home.

If I could give ZERO stars, I would!
This instructor stood me up.
I showed up at his home for our first lesson only to find out that he wasn't there.
I've also contacted "takelessons.com", but have had no response from them either!

Michael is doing a great job getting me started on my piano journey. The exercises and drills he is teaching me have helped me feel comfortable at the keyboard. I've even learned a song already, after just 2 lessons!

Highly recommended.

From my lessons, students will gain engaging and exciting instruction. Students will use Spanish every time we meet. My aim is to help you meet your goals and help you enjoy it along the way!

About Jimmy
My name is Jimmy. I have been teaching Spanish for about five years now. I have taught all ages from kindergarten to adults.

As a current teacher, my primary goal is to make sure the students have engaging and fun experiences while learning Spanish. I do not lecture solely on the nuts and bolts of the language but rather allow the student to perform the language in order to learn it.

I do want to make clear that I do teach young children (ages 2-12) but I prefer to teach them in person and at least twice a week. I believe the experience to be more valuable that way.

Additionally, I ask that you and I talk for a while before signing up for lessons with me. I may not be able the person to give you what you need. I want to be sure your needs are met through Take Lessons and I may not be the person that can do that. So, please mess
age me often.

I am always excited to teach someone this language I love so much.

¬°Gracias!

Great first lesson. Kathleen contacted me in advance to find out what I’d like to work on and she was prepared with several options tonight. Her helpful tips on folding and diagram reading were just what I was looking for. We agreed on the next piece and I’m already looking forward to our next lesson. Thank you!

I was looking for a boost to my new hobby with origami, and have had two lessons so far with Kathleen. I couldn't be happier with the lesson experience; her approach is detailed, clear, easy to follow along with and relaxed. She was even folding upside down from her point of view so that I could see from across the table. I was really impressed. There's nothing like learning from a real person. Definitely looking forward to more lessons in the future.

I am a Cuban American with a love of the Spanish language. Not only did I grow up using Spanish with family, I have studied it for 11 years. It all started in my 7th grade class with Sra. I have been studying Spanish for 10 years. I grew up speaking Spanish, and I studied abroad in Sevilla, Spain! Tutoring sessions are customized and catered to the needs/goals of each student. Not only will you be speaking Spanish in no time, but you will be building a strong foundation of reading comprehension, conversational skills, listening comprehension, pronunciation, and more. ¡Vamos! Let's get started!

About Madeline
I am a born and raised Southern California girl, with a Latina "alma" (soul), according to my nanny, but I love living in freezing Minnesota. It was difficult to say goodbye to sunny CA and In-n-Out, but the challenge of moving here was well worth it. For me, moving to St. Paul was like moving to a foreign country. People are friendly, the weather is incredibly different, and the lifestyle is more grounded. It's a wonderful change from my life spent in California, but I'm always excited to go home.

I studied abroad in Sevilla, Spain in Spring 2018!

My dream, since I was little, was to create change in the world. I want to help others and make a positive impact. Find out more about me and my goals by getting in touch.
